Abstract
The anatomy of the edentulous posterior maxilla and maxillary sinus possess unique challenges in implant dentistry. The purpose of this study was to assess maxillary sinus membrane thickness (MT) and lateral wall thickness (LWT) in different facial index profiles and to describe the clinical implications. A retrospective image analysis of 75 CBCT scans was done, which yielded a total of 150 sinus images. The facial index was calculated as per the formula given in the text and grouped as euryprosopic, mesoprosopic and leptoprosopic. The images obtained were of 36 women (48%) and 39 men (52%), with maximum subjects in 30-39 years age group. MT and LWT were measured at three different points on the radiograph at every 3mm from the base of the sinus floor in premolar and molar regions of each image. Results showed females had significant differences from males in LWT in both premolar and molar regions (p = 0.018 and 0.032 respectively). Subjects in 40-49 years of age had significant differences (p = 0.021) in MT in premolar region only. Also, difference in MT in premolar and molar regions were also statistically significant. Lastly, the present study did not find any statistically significant difference in MT and LWT in all three facial indices groups. It can be concluded that different facial indices have no positive correlation with maxillary sinus membrane thickness and lateral wall thickness. Hence, surgical complications are avoidable with proper detailed knowledge and appropriate identification of the anatomic structures characteristic to the maxillary sinus.

Abstract
Maxillary sinus augmentation with a lateral approach (MSA) is a well-established treatment. In this prospective study, we evaluated risk factors for postoperative bone graft displacement and reported the clinical application of long-term resorbable L-lactic acid/-caprolactone (PLA/PCL) as a barrier membrane to cover the open window in the lateral wall in MSA. Twenty-four patients underwent MSA according to the relevant criteria; CT data obtained before and 1 week (1 w) and 5-6 months (5 m) post-MSA, bone height changes, bone height reduction rates at 1 w and 5 m post-MSA, bone graft displacement measurements, and risk factors were examined. All patients showed bone height increments (p < 0.005). However, no difference was observed between 1 w and 5 m post-MSA. Bone graft displacement was observed in eight patients; the reduction rate from 1 w to 5 m post-MSA was 8.38% ± 4.88%. Sex, septa, maxillary sinus floor-palatal bone distance, and maxillary sinus floor-maxillary ostium distance were associated with bone graft displacement (p < 0.05). The height from the maxillary sinus floor to the palatal bone and the sinus angle influenced the augmentation degree (p < 0.05). The PLA/PCL membrane is compared favorably with other membranes and may be useful as a barrier membrane for the MSA open window.

Abstract
AIM To describe the histological events that occur after maxillary sinus floor elevation when the elevated and undetached sinus mucosa are in close proximity or in contact with each other. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 76 rabbits, 152 elevated maxillary sinuses were analyzed histologically. Sites without adhesions were classified as "No proximity," whereas the adhesion stages were divided into "Proximity," "Fusion," and "Synechia stages." The width of the pseudostratified columnar epithelium and the distance between the two layers of the elevated and undetached sinus mucosae were measured at various standardized positions. RESULTS Thirty-one sites presenting with adhesions were found. Twelve sites were in the proximity stage," presenting cilia of the two epithelial layers that were shortened and interlinked within the mucous context. Hyperactivity of the goblet cells was also observed. In the other cases, the hyperplastic epithelium showed attempts to reach the contralateral mucosa. The 15 "fusion stage" sites presented regions with epithelial cells of the two mucosal layers that penetrated each other. Four sites presented "synechiae stages," represented by bridges of connective tissue connecting the two lamina propria. CONCLUSIONS Close proximity or tight contact between the elevated and undetached mucosa adhering to the bone walls might occur after maxillary sinus floor elevation. This induced hyperplasia of the epithelial cells and adhesion of the two layers until synechiae formation.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate using microCT and positron emission tomography (PET) analysis, the influence on bone healing of the placement of particulate autogenous bone in the antrostomy, and in the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation with xenograft. MATERIAL AND METHODS The sinus mucosa was elevated in sixteen male New Zealand rabbits and they were both grafted with a collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone. The antrostomy and the near subjacent region were filled with either the same xenograft (control site) or with particulate autogenous bone (test site) harvested from the tibia. The antrostomies were covered with collagen membranes. MicroCT (measured in Hounsfield Units) and microPET (kBq/cm3) using sodium fluoride infiltration (18F-NaF) were performed at the time of euthanasia that was performed after 1 and 8 weeks of healing, using 8 animals in each group. The Wilcoxon test was used for analysis. RESULTS At the microCT analysis, after 1 and 8 weeks of healing, no statistically significant differences were found between groups. Bone increased and xenograft decreased significantly between the two periods of healing. At the microPET analysis, the percentage of bone increased significantly over time in both test and control groups and no significant differences were found between groups. CONCLUSION The placement of autogenous bone in the antrostomy and the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation did not enhance bone formation compared with sites where only xenograft was used. Both microCT and microPET showed increase bone formation over time.

Abstract
Stabilization of dental implants in the sinus region with a bone height below 4 mm gen-erally requires a two-stage sinus floor elevation surgery. To improve this aspect, the aim of this retrospective study was to demonstrate the feasibility of performing a one-stage maxillary sinus augmentation using an innovative self-condensing implant design, even in case of a bone height close to 2 mm. Clinical and radiological outcomes from 54 patients (26 females; 28 males; 69 total implants positioned) were analyzed 3 years post-surgery. The three-dimensional grafts change was evaluated by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) before surgery (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), and 1-year post-surgery (T2). The sinus floor levels measured at the medial (M-W), middle (MD-W), and lateral (L-W) walls reported: M-W of 1.9 ± 2.4 mm (T1) and 1.7 ± 2.6 mm (T2); MD-W of -0.1 ± 2.7 mm (T1) and 0.7 ± 2.4 mm (T2); L-W of 3.1 ± 3.0 mm (T1) and 3.1 ± 3.0 mm (T2); besides a bone crest height (C-F) of 4.6 ± 2.0 mm (T1) and 12.1 ± 1.4 mm (T2). Moreover, after 3 years only 1 implant was lost, and so an implant survival rate of 98.55% was recorded. In conclusion, these results suggest the efficacy of using this implant design for a one-stage sinus lift approach, not only in terms of increased implant survival rate and decreased marginal bone loss, but also for its potential applicability in case of reduced bone height.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Schneiderian membrane (SM) that is in contact with biomaterial granules may become thinner and eventually perforate. It has been shown that these events are related to the biomaterial used. Hence, the main aim of the present study was to compare the damaging effects of two xenografts with different resorbability rates on SM. The secondary aim was to evaluate the possible protection from damage offered by a collagen membrane placed adjacent to the SM and by inward displacement of the bone window with the SM during elevation. METHODS Thirty-six albino New Zealand rabbits underwent bilateral sinus elevation. One group of 18 animals received deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM group) and the other received swine-collagenated corticocancellous bone (collagenated group). Moreover, in the DBBM group, the bone window was displaced inward during elevation in one sinus together with the SM. In the collagenated group, a collagen membrane was placed adjacent to the SM in one sinus. Six animals were assessed per period after 2, 4, and 8 weeks. RESULTS The mean pristine mucosa width ranged between 67 µm and 113 µm, and none had a width of <40 µm. In the 2-week group, the elevated mucosa of the DBBM group presented 59 thinned sites and five perforations, while in the collagenated group, 14 thinned sites and one perforation were observed. Damage to SM decreased in number in the 4-week treatment group. In the 8-week group, the number of thinned sites in the DBBM group increased to 124, and the perforations to 8. In the collagenated group, 7 thinned sites and 1 small perforation were observed. CONCLUSIONS More damage to the Schneiderian membrane was observed in the DBBM group than in the collagenated group. The presence of the inward bone window offered protection from damage to the Schneiderian membrane.

Abstract
Objective: To compare healing of collagenated and non-collagenated xenografts used for maxillary sinus floor elevation. Materials and Methods: Two different xenografts were used: deproteinized bovine bone (DBBM group) and collagenated corticocancellous porcine bone (collagenated group). Healing was studied after 2, 4, and 8 weeks. The loss of dimensions of the elevated area and the percentages of new bone, xenograft remnants, osteoclastic zones, vessels, inflammatory infiltrates, and soft tissues were analyzed. Three regions were evaluated: close to the bone walls (bone wall region), subjacent the sinus mucosa (submucosa region), and the center of the elevated area (middle region). The primary variables were the percentage of new bone and xenograft remnants. Results: Between 2 and 8 weeks, the elevated areas showed a reduction of 16.3% and 52.2% in the DBBM and collagenated groups, respectively (p < 0.01 between the two areas after 8 weeks). After 8 weeks, the highest content of new bone was observed in the bone wall region, which was higher in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group (41.6% and 28.6%, respectively; p < 0.01). A similar quantity of new bone was found between the two groups in other regions. A higher percentage of vessels in all regions evaluated (p < 0.01) and soft tissue in the sub-mucosa region (p < 0.05) was found in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group. Conclusions: The present study showed that both xenografts allowed new bone formation. In comparison with the non-collagenated xenograft, the collagenated xenograft underwent higher resorption, resulting in greater shrinkage of the elevated space after sinus lifting and a higher content of new bone in the regions close to the bone walls. Clinical relevance: In this study, the region adjacent to the bone wall showed the highest new bone content. This region resembles the base of the sinus, closest to the sinus floor and walls, and is the most important region from a clinical point of view because it is where the implant will be installed. Residues of the biomaterial remained after 8 weeks of healing. Other reports have shown that these biomaterial residues may interfere with the integration of implants.

Abstract
Background: It has been shown in rabbit models that the sinus mucosa in contact with graft particles might experience a progressive thinning and perforations. The phenomenon depends on the graft used. Hence, the aim of the present study was to compare the damaging effects of a synthetic of a xenogeneic graft. Methods: Forty New Zealand rabbits received a bilateral sinus elevation. Both sinuses of twenty rabbits were grafted with a biphasic 60% hydroxyapatite and 40% β-tricalcium phosphate while the other twenty received a deproteinized bovine bone mineral graft. Thinned sites (<40 µm) and perforations on the mucosa in contact with graft particles were evaluated after 2 and 10 weeks (ten animals each period). The width of the pseudostratified epithelium was also measured as control. Results: After 2 weeks of healing, 61 thinned sites were detected in the Synthetic group and 49 in the Xenogeneic group. After 10 weeks, the number of thinned mucosae increased to 79 sites in the Synthetic group (p = 0.222 between periods), and to 114 sites in the Xenogeneic group (p = 0.030 between groups; p = 0.001 between periods). Perforations were few in the 2-week period, two in two sinuses out of 20 in the Synthetic group, and four in two sinuses out of 20 in the Xenogeneic group (p = 0.721). In the 10-week period, the perforations increased to eight in the Synthetic group, distributed in six sinuses out of 20, and to sixteen in the Xenogeneic group, distributed in 11 sinuses out of 20 (p = 0.082). The pseudostratified epithelium presented a reduced width at the thinned sites. Conclusions: The contact with synthetic or xenogeneic grafts will induce thinning and possible perforations of the sinus mucosa. This effect will increase over time, and it is stronger at the xenogeneic than the synthetic graft.

Abstract
Over the years, several bone regeneration procedures have been proposed using natural (autografts, allografts, and xenografts) and synthetic (i.e., metals, ceramics, and polymers) bone grafts. In particular, numerous in vitro and human and animal in vivo studies have been focused on the discovery of innovative and suitable biomaterials for oral and maxillofacial applications in the treatment of severely atrophied jaws. On this basis, the main objective of the present narrative review was to investigate the efficacy of innovative collagenated porcine bone grafts (OsteoBiol®, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy), designed to be as similar as possible to the autologous bone, in several bone regeneration procedures. The scientific publications were screened by means of electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Embase, finally selecting only papers that dealt with bone substitutes and scaffolds for bone and soft tissue regeneration. A total of 201 papers have been detected, including in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. The effectiveness of over 20 years of translational research demonstrated that these specific porcine bone substitutes are safe and able to improve the biological response and the predictability of the regenerative protocols for the treatment of alveolar and maxillofacial defects.

Abstract
Sinus floor elevation is a surgical procedure that allows for the insertion of the implant in the posterior region of the maxilla in case of insufficient volume of native bone. Several studies have reported a high success rate, and this has helped to spread this surgical procedure around the world. The subject has been extensively studied and this could lead researchers to think that no new scientific evidence can be provided. However, new ideas and discoveries show that research never reaches a conclusion, and that new information can be added all the time. This collection aimed to provide new evidence that could be added to daily clinical work and to provide new ideas for future research.

Abstract
Background: Perforation of the sinus mucosa is quite a frequent complication that might occur during sinus floor elevation. The perforation is often protected with a collagen membrane to avoid the extrusion of graft particles within the sinus. However, this procedure might hinder the innate osteogenic potential of the sinus mucosa. Hence, the aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of a placement of a collagen membrane subjacent the Schneiderian membrane during sinus floor elevation on implant bone healing. Methods: Twenty volunteers took part in the trial. Ten were randomly included in the group that received a collagen membrane subjacent the sinus mucosa (Mb group), and ten did not receive the membrane (non-Mb group). A collagenated corticocancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated space. Six 6 months after the sinus floor elevation, a mini implant was placed transcrestally and retrieved after a further 3 months. Histological analyses were then performed on the full body of the mini implant as well as on its coronal and apical portions. Results: The new bone apposition proportion onto the implant surface was similar in the Mb and non-Mb groups, both in the apical and coronal portions of the mini implants. A lesser amount of graft was found in contact with the surface. New bone density around the mini implants were similar both in the apical and coronal portions. However, a statistically higher proportion of graft particles was found in the Mb group compared to the non-membrane group. Conclusions: The placement of a collagen membrane subjacent the sinus mucosa did not affect bone healing at implants and bone density.

Abstract
The maxillary sinus growth is initiated 3 months after birth, and it grows lateral and inferior until the pneumatization of the alveolar bone occurs. The facial skeleton has recently been determined as affecting the maxillary sinus, prompting additional studies on changes in the size of the maxillary sinus. This study aimed to determine the size of the maxillary sinus using a 3D program after categorizing South Korean adults according to their facial index (FI) classification. The participants of this study were 60 patients in their 20s, who visited the orthodontic department of Dankook University Dental Hospital (approval no. DUDH IRB 2015-12-022). The CBCT of the patients were extracted and measured as 3D images using Mimics (version 22.0, Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Upon categorizing the subjects based on their FI classification, they were grouped into the mesoprosopic, leptoprosopic, and hyperleptoprosopic types. A one-way ANOVA was performed to evaluate the mean differences of the maxillary sinus, depending on the FI classification. In this study, the maxillary sinus tended to be wider in those with mesoprosopic type, and tended to be higher in the hyperleptoprosopic type, suggesting a need for clinicians to focus to the shape of the face during clinical treatments.

Abstract
Osseointegration of implants installed in conjunction with sinus floor elevation might be affected by the presence of residual graft. The implant surface characteristics and the protection of the access window using a collagen membrane might influence the osseointegration. To evaluate these factors, sinus floor elevation was performed in patients using a natural bovine bone grafting material. The access windows were either covered with a collagen membrane made of porcine corium (Mb group) or left uncovered (No-Mb group) and, after six months, two mini-implants with either a moderate rough or turned surfaces were installed. After 3 months, biopsies containing the mini-implants were retrieved, processed histologically, and analyzed. Twenty patients, ten in each group, were included in the study. The two mini-implants were retrieved from fourteen patients, six belonging to the Mb group, and eight to the No-Mb group. No statistically significant differences were found in osseointegration between groups. However, statistically significant differences were found between the two surfaces. It was concluded that implants with a moderately rough surface installed in a composite bone presented much higher osseointegration compared to those with a turned surface. The present study failed to show an effect of the use of a collagen membrane on the access window.

Abstract
Background: Experimental studies have shown a progressive thinning and perforations of the sinus mucosa associated with sharpened edges and the cutting projections of graft particles used simultaneously for maxillary sinus augmentation. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the damaging effects of two different bovine grafts on the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation. Methods: Twenty New Zealand rabbits received a bilateral sinus lifting using, as fillers, two different types of deproteinized bovine bone in granules, one processed at low temperature (low-T group), and the other at high temperature (high-T group). Thinned mucosa sites (<40 µm) and perforations were evaluated in the sinus mucosa that were in contact with graft granules after 2 and 10 weeks, in ten animals per period. Results: After 2 weeks of healing, the number of thinned mucosa sites was 118 in the low-T group, and 149 in the high-T group (p = 0.191). At the 10-week assessment, the thinned sites increased to 237 and 195 sites, respectively. The numbers of sinus mucosa perforations after 2 weeks were eight and three in the low-T and high-T group, respectively. At the 10-week evaluation, the perforations increased to 19 in the low-T group, and to 14 in the high-T group. Conclusions: The contact with bovine xenografts yielded thinning and perforations of the sinus mucosa. Despite the differences in characteristics and dimensions, no differences were found between the two xenografts in the numbers of thinning mucosa sites and perforations. However, a trend of more events was found in the low-T compared to the high-T group.

Abstract
An antral pseudocyst (AP) is a common well-defined ‘dome-shaped’ faintly radiopaque lesion of the maxillary sinus, and usually does not require treatment in asymptomatic patients. However, when sinus floor augmentation is required to increase bone volume for implant installation, the elevation of the sinus mucosa might drive the AP against the ostium. This might cause its obstruction and, as possible consequence, sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and tomographic conditions of APs to identify a predictable cyst removal that might allow a safety sinus floor augmentation. A total of 52 maxillary sinuses in 46 patients (mean age 55.1 years) presenting AP were examined by cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs). A two-stage approach was applied. At the first surgery, the cystic lesions were further inspected by an endoscope through the antrostomy, and histopathological diagnosis of the removed tissues was carried out. After the confirmation of decrease of the swelling of sinus membrane by CBCT, the sinus floor augmentation was performed, at least four months after cyst removal. The color and transparency of the 86 cystic lesions were classified into 4 types. The whitish transparent cysts were 34 (39.5%), the yellowish transparent cysts were 18 (20.9%), the dark purple transparent cysts were 8 (9.3%) and the milky-white opaque cysts were 26 (30.2%). The contents of the 60 (69.8%) transparent cysts were serous fluid, but those of milky-white cysts were composed of viscous or elastic soft tissues, and the aspiration of the contents was unsuccessful. The analysis of the preoperative CBCT did not provide certainty on the contents of the cystic lesions. All cystic lesions were diagnosed as AP, and an infection was identified in one AP, presenting marked infiltration of the inflammatory cells. Considering the difficulties of performing a correct diagnosis of the AP content by a CBCT analysis, the risk of failure of the surgery that creates severe afflictions to the patients, and the necessity of a histological evaluation of the cyst, a two-stage surgery appeared to be the most reliable procedure.

Abstract
Background: The treatment of the surface of titanium implants with argon plasma improved its hydrophilicity and cell adhesion, resulting in higher bone apposition on implant and graft surfaces. The spontaneous perforation over time of the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation has been documented in experimental studies at both implants and graft particles. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of plasma argon treatment of the implant surface on bone apposition and on the rate of sinus mucosa perforations. Methods: A sinus lifting procedure was performed bilaterally in sixteen rabbits, and implants, either treated with argon plasma or left without treatment (control), were placed simultaneously without grafts. After 8 weeks, histological analyses were carried out. Results: A collapse of the sinus mucosa was observed at all implants. Twenty-four out of thirty-two implants presented sinus mucosa perforations at the apex. Several perforations were also found at the threads. Thinned mucosa sites (width < 40 µm) were found around almost all implants. About 2.6–2.9 mm of the apical regions of the implant did not present signs of osseointegration and about 1.3 mm were exposed to the sinus cavity. No statistically significant differences were found between plasma and control sites. Conclusions: In conclusion, the sinus mucosa was damaged and perforated by direct contact with treated and non-treated implant surfaces. The treatment of the implant surface with argon plasma did not affect the outcomes.

Abstract
Background: A thickening of the sinus mucosa is observed after sinus floor augmentation. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of the presence of septa in the dimensional variation and ostium involvement over time of the Schneiderian mucosa after sinus floor augmentation. Materials and Methods: Fifteen sinuses with septa (septa group) and 15 without (control group) were selected. CBCTs taken before surgery, and were analyzed after 1 week and after 9 months. Schneiderian membrane thickness changes over time and involvement of the ostium were evaluated. Results: Four perforations occurred in the septa group and none in the control group. After 1 week of healing, the sinus mucosa thickness increased in height by 5.7 mm and 7.1 mm in the septa and control groups, respectively. In this period, the patency of the ostium decreased in both groups, and three infundibula were obstructed in the septa group, and five in the control group. The mucosa was thicker and the edema was closer to the ostium in the control compared to in the septa group. After 9 months of healing, the dimensions regressed to normal pattern and no obstruction of the infundibula were observed. No statistically significant differences were found between septa and control groups. Conclusions: after one week of healing, the sinus mucosa increased in dimensions in both septa and control groups. However, the sinus mucosa presented a tendency of being thicker and closer to the ostium, resulting in a higher number of infundibula obstructions, in the control group compared to in the septa group. After 9 months, the sinus mucosa regressed to normal dimensions and no obstructions of the infundibula were observed in any group.

MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-eight maxillary sinuses in sixty-five patients were evaluated on cone beam computed tomographies taken before surgery and after one week (t1w) and nine months (t9m). Several parameters such as the distance XF between an axis parallel to the base of the nose (X-axes) and the sinus floor (F) were correlated with the height gain (IF) at t1w and t9m and the post-surgical edema. RESULTS A weak significant positive correlation was observed between height gain vs. sinus height of interest (XF), the balcony, and the sinus floor angle. The post-surgical edema was influenced by the initial mucosa thickness and the xenograft used. CONCLUSIONS Various parameters might affect height gain and sinus mucosa thickening after sinus floor elevation. The height of interest, the balcony, and the sinus floor angle showed significant correlations with height gain. The initial thickness of the mucosa and the biomaterial used influenced the post-surgical edema.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the lack of data comparing the biological behavior of two formulations, granules and paste, of alloplastic graft from microtomographic and histomorphometric points of view, the aim of the present experiment was to compare the histomorphometric and microtomographic healing of two formulations, i.e., granules (MR sites) or paste (MR-inject sites) of an alloplastic graft composed of a combination of beta-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite used for maxillary sinus lifting. METHODS A sinus lifting procedure was carried out bilaterally in 20 rabbits, and the elevated space was filled with either paste or granules of an alloplastic material. A collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomy and the animals were euthanized after 2 or 10 weeks, 10 animals each group. Microtomographic and histological analyses were performed. RESULTS Higher proportions of new bone formation were found at the MR, compared to the MR-inject sites both after 2 weeks (2.65 ± 2.89% vs. 0.08 ± 0.12%; p < 0.01) and 10 weeks of healing (34.20 ± 13.86 vs. 23.28 ± 10.35%; p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that new bone formation was faster in the MR sites, compared to the MR-inject. However, a longer time of healing should be allowed to make final conclusions about the efficiency in bone formation of the paste formulation of the biomaterial used in the present study.

Abstract
Background: Due to the lack of data on bone-to-graft contact (BGC) over time in the various regions within the subantral space of the augmented sinus floor, the present study aimed to evaluate the osteoconductivity of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) with granules of different sizes applied in maxillary sinus floor elevation. Methods: A maxillary sinus augmentation was performed bilaterally in 18 rabbits using DBBM with particle dimensions of either 0.125–1.0 mm or 1–2 mm. The antrostomy was covered using a collagen barrier. The animals were euthanized in groups of six after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. MicroCT and histological analyses were performed. Results: After 2 weeks of healing, BGC was 10.9% and 11.9% for the small and large granule sites, respectively. After 8 weeks of healing, the BGC increased to 65% and 62% at the small and large granule sites, respectively. The highest values were located close to the bony walls and the bony window. New bone content developed between 2 and 8 weeks from 7.0% to 27.6% and from 6.1% to 27.6% at the small and large granule sites, respectively. Conclusions: Similar outcomes in osteoconductivity and bone formation were found at both small and large DBBM granule sites.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the modifications and possible perforations of the sinus mucosa lining graft particles and implant surfaces after sinus lifting. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve New Zealand rabbits underwent a bilateral sinus lifting using either autogenous bone harvested from the tibia (AB; autogenous bone group) or deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM group) as filler. Implants were simultaneously installed. Thinned sites (<40 μm) and perforations were histologically evaluated at the sinus mucosa in contact with the graft and with the implant after 7 and 40 days of healing. RESULTS The mean width of the pristine mucosa was ~70-80 μm. After 7 days of healing, the sinus mucosa in contact with the graft presented fourteen thinned sites in the AB group (mean width 28.8±12.8 μm) and fifty-nine in the DBBM group (mean width 22.2±5.2 μm). No perforations of the mucosa were seen in the AB group while six perforations distributed in two sinuses were found in the DBBM group. After 40 days, only one thinned mucosa and no perforations were observed in the AB group while ninety-six thinned mucosa sites were shared by six sinuses (19.2±3.8 μm), and 3 perforations by two sinuses in the DBBM group. Few sites of the mucosa were in contact with the implant apex and threads after 7 days of healing. However, after 40 days, twelve thinned mucosa sites were seen in four sinuses in the AB groups (mean width ~19 μm) and 5 in two sinuses in the DBBM group (mean width ~20 μm). Perforations were seen in two sinuses in the AB group, and in one sinus in the DBBM group. CONCLUSIONS The sinus mucosa might be damaged by a close contact with graft particles and implant surface.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lateral maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA) is a predictable bone regeneration technique in case of atrophy of the posterior-upper maxilla. Aimed at obtaining quantity and quality of bone suitable for receiving osseointegrated implants, its success is largely due to the skill of the surgeon, but also to the characteristics of the biomaterial used. METHODS Twenty-four patients needing MSA were included in the study. The patients were randomly allocated to three different groups: anorganic bovine bone mineral as control, tricalcium phosphate with or without hyaluronic acid (HA) as test groups. Nine months after MSA, bone biopsies were harvested for the histomorphometric analysis. Secondary outcomes were mean bone gain, intraoperative and postoperative complications, implant insertion torque, implant failure, and patient-reported outcome measures. RESULTS Although the percentage of new bone was not statistically different between the three groups (P = .191), the percentages of residual biomaterial was significantly higher (P < .000) and nonmineralized tissue significantly lower (P < .000) in the control than in the test groups. Test groups did not differ significantly from each other for all histomorphometric parameters. The implant insertion torque was significantly higher in the control group (P < .0005). The rest of the secondary outcomes were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSION MSA is a safe and predictable procedure in terms of histological, clinical, and PROAMs, regardless of the biomaterial used. The addition of HA did not influence the outcomes.

Abstract
The maxillary sinus is the largest of the four paranasal sinuses in humans, and its close proximity to the teeth means that caution is required during dental treatment. In particular, implant surgeries involving the maxillary posterior teeth should include evaluating the inferior part of the maxillary sinus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences by comparing the inferior part of the maxillary sinus based on the nasal cavity floor (NCF) between patients (male 30, female 30) genders through the use of the three-dimensional (3-D) program that can facilitate 3-D visualizations. The present study results obtained from 3-D visualizations using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data showed that the inferior part of the maxillary sinus was mostly larger in males than in females. In addition, the utilization of 3-D visualization data was more likely to assure accuracy than when using data obtained by two-dimensional (2-D) imaging. Therefore, 3-D visualizations of the inferior part of the maxillary sinus will contribute to accurate analyses of its anatomical structure during implant surgery and other operations. Further studies utilizing 3-D visualization will yield useful fundamental data and guidelines for future research.

Abstract
Background After sinus floor augmentation, a thickening of the sinus mucosa has been described. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the involvement of the maxillary sinus ostium in the edematous processes after a sinus floor augmentation procedure. Methods Seventy-two cone-beam computerized tomographies (CBSTs) were taken before sinus floor augmentation and after 1 week and 9 months from surgery and analyses. Sinus mucosa thickness and area, ostium diameter and patency, and extension of the post-surgical transient mucosal thickening in relation to the ostium were evaluated on the CBCTs for all three periods. The term “virtual” when referring to sinus mucosa thickness and area was introduced because of the edema and bleeding that both contributed to a transient thickening and additional elevation of the sinus mucosa. Results The mean virtual thickness of the sinus mucosa was 2.7 ± 4.0 mm, 7.7 ± 7.1 mm, 1.7 ± 2.0 mm before surgery, and after 1 week and 9 months. The virtual mucosa area was 37.2 ± 52.5 mm2, 184.5 ± 153.8 mm2, and 34.0 ± 50.7 mm2. The ostium diameter at the three periods evaluated was 1.8 ± 0.5 mm, 1.1 ± 0.6 mm, 1.5 ± 0.8 mm, respectively. Three infundibula (4.2%) were found out of patency before surgery while this number increased to 14 (19.4%) after 1 week. Nine months after surgery, only one infundibulum (1.4%) was out of patency, however, without presenting signs of sinus pathologies. The extension of the mucosal edema on the palatal sinus was reduced after 9 months of healing. Conclusions One week after sinus floor augmentation, the maxillary sinus mucosa increased in dimensions and in several cases involved the ostium, reducing its diameter and producing a transient loss of patency. After 9 months of healing, the initial conditions were recovered.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the influence of the access window dimensions on the healing at the antrostomy and within the augmented maxillary sinus. MATERIAL AND METHODS A maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in twenty-four albino New Zealand rabbits. Antrostomies of 3 × 6 mm (small) or 5 × 6 mm (large) in dimensions were randomly prepared in each animal. A collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated region, and an equine collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomies. Three different groups were formed, based on the time of euthanasia, i.e., 2, 4, and 8 weeks from surgery. RESULTS No relevant changes of the height of the augmented sinus were detected over time. Mineralized bone increased between 2 and 4 weeks of healing while remained stable between 4 and 8 weeks. The highest amounts of new bone were found close to the sinus bone walls. No antrostomies were found healed with an even layer of corticalized bone, while large amounts of connective tissue were occupying the antrostomy in both groups. CONCLUSION Antrostomies of different dimensions resulted in similar outcome in bone formation both in the antrostomy regions and within the elevated sinus.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate histologically the healing of mini-implants installed after sinus floor elevation using a lateral approach and placing the antrostomy at different level from the sinus floor. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sinus floor elevation using a lateral approach was performed in 24 healthy volunteers. The antrostomy was randomly placed either close to the base of the sinus floor (group base) or at about 3-4 mm cranially to it (group standard). After 6 months of healing, mini-implants were installed within the grafted region, through the alveolar crest. Three months later, biopsies were collected. RESULTS Sixteen biopsies from 16 patients were available for histological analyses. The new bone reached fractions of 40.9 ± 11.9% and 48.5 ± 20.1% at the base and standard groups, respectively (p = 0.208). Xenograft particles were found in contact with the implant surface at percentages of 12.1 ± 11.0% in the base group, and 15.9 ± 23.7% in the standard group (p = 0.674). CONCLUSIONS Based on the present study, the choice of one or the other position of antrostomy did not influence significantly the outcome and, therefore, should be left to the preference of the surgeon.

MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixteen New Zealand rabbits were undergone to bilateral maxillary sinus floor augmentation with 4 × 4 mm antrostomy dimension. In the test site (treated sites), autogenous bone was harvested from the tibia and was placed either in the antrostomy and the subjacent region while the control site was left untreated. Antrostomy was covered bilaterally with collagen membranes. Animals were euthanized after 1 and 8 weeks of healing, with 8 rabbits in each group. Histomorphometric evaluations were done. The Wilcoxon test is used for statistical analysis, for a 5% statistical significance. RESULTS After 1 week of healing, the new bone proportion in the antrostomy was 7.7 ± 11.2% and 6.1 ± 6.4% in the treated and untreated sites, respectively. In the subjacent region (close-to-window region), hardly any new bone was assessed. In the elevated region, 2.7-2.8% of total new bone was found in both sites. In the antrostomy region, after 8 weeks of healing, 35.5 ± 20.9% of new bone in the treated sites, and 28.6 ± 24.1% in the untreated sites was observed (p = 0.499). In the close-to-window region, the respective proportions were 25.8 ± 16.1% and 17.6 ± 16.3% (p = 0.018). In the elevated region, the total new bone reached fractions of 27.9 ± 12.9% and 23.6 ± 15.2% in the treated and untreated sites, respectively (p = 0.128). CONCLUSIONS The placement of autogenous bone in the antrostomy and the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation, slightly enhanced bone formation compared with sites only grafted with xenograft. Though, only the subjacent close-to-window region showed a statistical significance at 8 weeks of healing. Despite the limitations of the present study, due to its preclinical nature, findings should be extrapolated to humans with caution.

Abstract
Aim To study the influence of a collagen membrane placed subjacent to the sinus mucosa on the dimensional changes of augmented maxillary sinus floor. Methods Twenty patients were recruited in the study and randomly assigned to two groups. After the elevation of the maxillary sinus mucosa, a collagen membrane with standardized dimensions was placed at the test sites subjacent to the sinus mucosa and the elevated space was filled with a xenograft, both at test and control sites. A collagen membrane was then used to cover the antrostomy at both sites, and sutures were applied to close the wounds. Cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs) were taken for all patients before surgery (T0), after 1 week from sinus floor augmentation (T1), and after 9 months of healing (T2). Dimensional changes over time of soft and hard tissues were evaluated on the CBCTs. Results After 1 week of healing, the sinus floor was elevated by 10.0 ± 2.8 mm and 10.6 ± 2.5 mm at the no-membrane and membrane groups, respectively. After 9 months of healing, a similar reduction of the height was observed in both groups, providing a total vertical augmentation of 8.6 ± 2.8 mm at the no-membrane sites and 9.1 ± 3.1 mm at the membrane sites. After 9 months of healing, the hard tissues subjacent to the sinus mucosa appeared to be partially corticalized in three patients in the no-membrane group and in six patients in the membrane group. Conclusions The use of collagen membranes subjacent to the sinus mucosa did not influence the dimensional variations of the augmented regions and the clinical outcomes after 9 months of healing also in absence of perforations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various anatomical references and structures should be analyzed prior approaching a surgery in the maxillary sinus. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anatomical structures and references involved in sinus floor elevation with a lateral approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five patients planned for sinus floor elevation were included in the study. Eighty-eight maxillary sinuses were evaluated using cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs). The nasal floor was used as main reference (X) and sinus mucosa width, bone crest height, palatal-nasal recess angle (PNR), sinus width at the level of the nasal floor, distance from the nasal floor to the base of the sinus (X-F), position of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA height) and diameter (PSAA diameter), lateral bone wall width at 3mm (LW 3mm) and 9mm (LW 9mm) from the base of the sinus (F), patency of the ostium (OP), and presence and position of septa have been evaluated. RESULTS The mean dimensions and standard deviations were the following: mucosa thickness was 2.0±1.4mm, bone crest height 2.8±1.4mm, distance X-F 8.3±1.9mm, PNR angle 135.5±23.1, sinus width 12.6±4.2mm, X-F 8.3±1.9mm, PSAA height 14.4±2.9mm, PSAA diameter 1.1±0.4mm, LW 3mm 1.5±1.2, LW 9mm 1.3±0.6mm, OP 1.9±0.4mm. Septa were present in 19.3% of the sinuses evaluated and were located mostly in the molar region. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the analysis of the CBCT before sinus floor elevation allows the identification of anatomical structures and references that might be used for the planning of the surgical approach, aiming to improve the outcome of the treatment and to avoid possible complications.
