The rise of online dating and racial homogamy in marriage

The rise of online dating has the potential to transform marriage outcomes, as it may alter how individuals are matched with partners. To capture the population-level effects of the rise of online dating, we examine how changes in marital racial homogamy from 2008 to 2016 are associated with changes in online dating within local dating markets. We use data from Google Trends and the American Community Survey with fixed-effects regression models to control for differences across dating markets. Our results suggest that the rise of online dating has not substantially influenced trends in racial homogamy, either nationally or within metropolitan areas.

As características desejadas em parceiros amorosos selecionados por meio da internet, intenções dos usuários e seus desdobramentos

O presente estudo avaliou as características desejadas em um parceiro virtual quando há intenção de se casar ou ficar. Uma amostra de 210 estudantes universitários respondeu a um questionário com questões elaboradas pelos pesquisadores e a Escala de Atributos do Parceiro Ideal. Verificou-se qual a intenção amorosa dos sujeitos ao utilizarem os aplicativos, a quantidade de encontros concretizados e o tempo de acesso a eles. Os resultados mostraram que as características desejadas em um parceiro para ficar e em um para casar são diferentes, assim como as intenções amorosas entre os sexos e a quantidade de encontros que concretizaram. O tempo de acesso aos aplicativos foi semelhante e as mulheres consideraram que os homens criam mais expectativas sobre o desenvolvimento de um namoro por ferramentas virtuais. Concluiu-se que os homens são mais propensos ao envolvimento sexual casual.

Comparative Agent-Based Simulations on Levels of Multiplicity Using a Network Regression: A Mobile Dating Use-Case

We demonstrate the use of agent-based models to simulate the interactions of two mobile dating applications that possess divergent interaction features. We reproduce several expected outcomes when compared to extant literature. We also demonstrate the use of a standard social network analysis technique—the network regression, Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure—in conducting a principled and interpretable comparison between the two models with strong results. This combined approach is novel and allows complex system modelers who utilize agent-based models to reduce their reliance on idealized network structures (small world, scale-free, erdos-renyi) when applying underlying network interactions to agent-based models that can often skew results and mislead from a full picture of system-level properties. This work serves as a proof-of-concept in the integration of classical social network analysis methods and contemporary agent-based modeling to compare software designs and to enhance the policy-generation process of online social networks.

We're Not That Choosy: Emerging Evidence of a Progression Bias in Romantic Relationships

Dating is widely thought of as a test phase for romantic relationships, during which new romantic partners carefully evaluate each other for long-term fit. However, this cultural narrative assumes that people are well equipped to reject poorly suited partners. In this article, we argue that humans are biased toward pro-relationship decisions-decisions that favor the initiation, advancement, and maintenance of romantic relationships. We first review evidence for a progression bias in the context of relationship initiation, investment, and breakup decisions. We next consider possible theoretical underpinnings-both evolutionary and cultural-that may explain why getting into a relationship is often easier than getting out of one, and why being in a less desirable relationship is often preferred over being in no relationship at all. We discuss potential boundary conditions that the phenomenon may have, as well as its implications for existing theoretical models of mate selection and relationship development.

The Secret to Finding a Match: A Field Experiment on Choice Capacity Design in an Online Dating Platform

Online matching platforms require new approaches to market design because firms can now control many aspects of the search and interaction process through various IT-enabled features. Although choice capacity—the number of candidates a user can view and select—is a key design feature of online matching platforms, its effect on engagement and matching outcomes remains unclear. We examine the effect of different choice capacities on market performance by conducting a randomized field experiment in collaboration with an online dating platform. Specifically, we design four treatment groups with different choice capacities in which users can only interact with other users in the same group and randomly assign the users to the treatment groups. We find that providing more choice capacity to male and female users has different effects on choice behaviors and matching outcomes. Although increasing the choice capacity of male users yields the highest engagement, increasing the choice capacity of female users is the most effective method to increase matching outcomes. We empirically demonstrate four mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of different choice capacity designs and generalize our findings by discussing how choice capacity can be designed to increase engagement and matching outcomes.

Mate selection among online daters in Shanghai: Why does education matter?

Prior studies of assortative mating have shown that people tend to marry someone of the same educational level, but why individuals value a mate’s education and the process of mate selection itself remain a black box in predominantly quantitative studies. With online dating’s growing popularity, research needs to examine how online daters navigate dating markets given educational preferences they hold and “freedom of choice” offered by technologies. This study aims to investigate individuals’ educational preferences and how educational preferences shape mate selection processes in online dating. In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 university-educated, heterosexual online daters (13 men, 16 women) in Shanghai. Data were analyzed through a combination of abductive and inductive coding strategies. Results showed that both educational levels and university prestige were primary mate selection criteria in online dating. Both genders considered educational sorting essential for achieving cultural matching, but only men emphasized the importance of spouse’s education for their future children’s education. Furthermore, guided by their educational preferences, online daters deliberately chose dating platforms and screened dating candidates. We argue that online daters’ emphasis on university prestige is rooted in China’s hierarchical higher education system, and gendered rationales for educational preferences stem from ingrained gender roles in Chinese families. Seemingly “personal” preferences are therefore shaped by cultural norms and institutional contexts. Moreover, results suggest that online dating may reinforce social closure among China’s educational elites.

Cyberintimacy: A Scoping Review of Technology-Mediated Romance in the Digital Age

With a swipe, click, or delete, people are now able to seek and sustain romance in unprecedented ways. The emerging research shows that cyberintimacy, or the phenomenon of technology-mediated communication between partners and potential romantic interests, significantly impacts the way we form, maintain, and even extinguish romantic relationships. Hence, this scoping review aims to (a) delineate how our use of technology-mediated communication is associated with specific outcomes (e.g., satisfaction and quality) throughout the romantic relationship lifecycle, and (b) identify emerging themes in the research. Adhering to Arksey and O'Mayley's six-step framework methodology, we performed a systematic database search, literature screening, and qualitative synthesis of the findings. Seventy-two studies were selected from a pool of 4,062 articles derived from a systematic search of six academic databases. The findings show that cyberintimacy has a profound impact on outcomes in three crucial stages of the relationship lifecycle-from the way people find and field partners online through the process of initiation; to the means by which partners use technology to perform relationship maintenance; and finally, the ways in which people cope with the process of dissolution by using technology to reclaim a sense of agency.

Sarantakos's Research on Same-Sex Parenting in Australia and New Zealand: Importance, Substance, and Corroboration with Research from the United States

Sarantakos (1996a) compared teacher ratings and other outcomes for the children of heterosexual married, heterosexual cohabiting, and homosexual parents and reported numerous significant, substantial differences. Few scholars have taken the effect sizes of his results into account or have considered his larger program of research. Sarantakos's research yielded many interesting findings with respect to children's academic performance, sexual orientation, use of alcohol and drugs, sexual deviance, and gender identity with respect to parents' parenting values, relationship stability, conflict, monogamy, and religiosity or moral values, many of which have been corroborated by U.S. or British research. In addition, the methodological quality of his research appears to be at least above average, especially for research done 20 or more years ago. He appears to have been unbiased with respect to same-sex families. His results disseminated via multiple publications should be taken into account in literature reviews concerning same-sex parenting.
