Impact of social knowledge and skills training based on UCLA PEERS® on social communication and interaction skills of adolescents or young adults with autism: A systematic review and meta-analysis

This study provided a systematic review and meta-analysis of UCLA PEERS® for social skills improvement in adolescents or young adults with autism. A total of 21 randomized controlled trials and 10 non-randomized controlled trials were included, and six different outcome indicators were analyzed. The results showed that PEERS improved participants' knowledge of social skills, ability to apply social skills, and emotional intelligence, and the difference between caregiver-reported scores and teacher-reported scores was statistically significant. The PEERS intervention produced the smallest effect using PEERS in East Asia. This study discussed the significance of PEERS on the improvement of social skills in ASD and the reasons for the results of the subgroup analyses, and provided some recommendations for PEERS intervention methods that may help to improve the effectiveness of the intervention.

Towards a decolonial developmental science: Adolescent development in the Majority World taking center stage

While aspiring to be a diverse and global science, developmental science continues to be dominated by EuroAmerican epistemologies, researchers, and communities in its published scholarship. Adolescents in communities across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America comprise 85% of the world's adolescent population, and yet their experiences and perspectives are marginalized in our science. Adolescents in the Majority World live in highly diverse social, cultural, political, economic, educational and healthcare contexts that contribute to their development, and we have much to learn from their experiences. This article situates the marginalization of the global majority within coloniality embedded in developmental science. The article describes the impetus for this special issue Towards a decolonial developmental science and the process of putting it together, along with providing an overview of the 18 articles in this collection that push us towards decoloniality. The special issue serves as a call to transform developmental science to be decolonial by empowering adolescent development in Majority World communities to take center stage. Adolescent development research from Majority World communities has the potential to challenge the knowledge base generated from Minority World samples, contributing to a science that is comprehensive, inclusive, and can inform prevention and intervention efforts to support the well-being of adolescents globally.

Toward a decolonial developmental science in Asia: Exploring adolescent development in communities from the majority world

The field of developmental science explores the rich interplay between individuals and their contexts, which dynamically shift across time and place. In Asia, context-specific research and practice are essential for promoting culturally relevant program and policy approaches to improving adolescent well-being. This involves critically examining how localized social structures and power dynamics shape individual experiences and outcomes. The landscape for Asian adolescents today differs significantly from that of previous generations due to rapid changes in these structures, and societal transformation has created the opportunity for traditional and modern values to coexist. This commentary draws across articles from this special issue to describe the dynamics of adolescent-context relations across diverse Asian contexts using developmental science methods. This includes interrogating risk factors, opportunities, and trajectories for adolescents growing up in non-Western settings while also questioning the application of Western, adult-centric discourses on adolescent well-being globally.

Filial responsibilities and psychological wellbeing among Chinese adolescents in poor single-mother families: does parental warmth matter?

Introduction

Adolescent children raised in single-mother households, particularly those living in poverty, often need to assume more instrumental and emotional familial responsibilities to cope with family challenges.

Method

This study examined the relationships between these filial responsibilities and adolescent psychological wellbeing, as well as the moderating effect of maternal warmth on these relationships via survey. The sample comprised 325 Chinese adolescent children (43.3% girls; Mage = 13.5) from economically disadvantaged single-mother families in Hong Kong.

Results

The results indicated that adolescents' instrumental filial responsibilities were positively associated with their life satisfaction. Emotional filial responsibilities, on the other hand, were positively linked to life satisfaction and negatively associated with depression. Furthermore, maternal warmth was found to moderate the relationship between emotional filial responsibilities and life satisfaction. Adolescents who perceived higher levels of maternal warmth and performed more emotional filial responsibilities reported greater life satisfaction than those who performed fewer such responsibilities. Furthermore, the moderating effect of maternal warmth on the relationship between instrumental filial responsibilities and life satisfaction varied between boys and girls. Additionally, the age of the adolescent moderated the effect of maternal warmth on the relationship between emotional filial responsibilities and adolescent anxiety.

Discussion

These findings suggest that filial responsibilities do not necessarily impede adolescent wellbeing. Instead, maternal warmth appears to be a crucial family factor that influences the nature of the relationship between filial responsibilities and adolescent wellbeing. These insights are valuable for family scholars and practitioners, informing the design of supportive services to enhance the psychological wellbeing of Chinese adolescents from economically disadvantaged single-mother families.
