Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep medication use is an indicator of underlying sleep problems that might be induced by various factors such as alcohol use. However, the longitudinal relationship between drinking and sleep problems remains poorly understood. We investigated associations between sleep medication and alcohol use throughout adulthood, and examined the role of familial and potential confounding factors contributing to these associations. METHODS We used information of zygosity and self-report questionnaire data over a follow-up period of 36 years from the Older Finnish Twin Cohort (N = 13 851). RESULTS Logistic regression analyses suggested consistent associations between sleep medication use and heavy/binge drinking at all four time points (OR range = 1.36-3.18, P < 0.05), implying that increased drinking is associated with increased sleep medication use over time. Cross-lagged path analyses suggested that moderate/heavy and binge drinking predict sleep medication use at most time points (OR range = 1.15-1.94, P < 0.05), whilst sleep medication use predicts subsequent abstaining from alcohol (OR range = 2.26-2.47, P < 0.05). Within-pair analyses implied that familial factors play a role, and quantitative genetic modelling estimated genetic factors to explain approximately 80 % of the lifetime association of sleep medication use with moderate/heavy and binge drinking. CONCLUSIONS Drinking is associated with sleep medication use throughout adulthood. Further, our results suggest that drinking is likely to predict sleep medication use, thereby potentially constituting a risk factor for sleep problems, and that genetic factors contribute to the association. These findings are important in terms of better understanding the development of sleep and alcohol use disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to different assessment modes employed, a clear picture of the prevalence of sleep bruxism across time cannot be formed. Moreover, studies on the persistent or fluctuating nature of sleep bruxism have yielded divergent and even contradictory results. The aim of the present study was to evaluate in a nationwide twin cohort whether self-reported sleep bruxism was correlated longitudinally, pairwise and cross-twin over a 20-year period. OBJECTIVES Self-reported bruxism was assessed in 1990 and 2011 by mailed questionnaires in the Finnish Twin Cohort study of same-sex twins born 1945-1957. METHODS We assessed the phenotypic stability over time for all participating individuals (n = 4992). Among zygosity verified pairs (n = 516 MZ and n = 837 DZ), we estimated the cross-sectional zygosity correlations and the zygosity-specific cross-twin cross-time correlations. RESULTS Reported bruxism appeared rather persistent over time without significant difference regarding zygosity. The overall phenotypic longitudinal correlation was 0.540 and somewhat higher in men (0.596) than in women (0.507). Pairwise trait correlations in 1990 and 2011 were higher in MZ than in DZ pairs. The cross-twin cross-time correlations were higher in MZ twins than in DZ twins, but less than the cross-sectional MZ and DZ pairwise correlations. CONCLUSIONS The higher correlation of reported sleep bruxism in the cross-twin cross-time analyses in MZ than in DZ pairs implies a genetic background for bruxism persistence. Also, bruxism over time in individual twins appears to be fairly persistent and somewhat higher in men than women.

Abstract
The UK Biobank study on chronotype and mortality suggested small increases of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a 6.5-year follow-up. Our aim was to constructively replicate findings from it in a longer follow-up. A questionnaire was administered to the population-based adult Finnish Twin Cohort in 1981 (response rate 84%). The study population included 23 854 participants who replied to the question: "Try to assess to what extent you are a morning person or an evening person," with four response alternatives (anchored from "clearly a morning person" to "clearly an evening person"). Vital status and cause of death data were provided by nationwide registers up to the end of 2018. Hazard ratios for mortality were computed based on 8728 deaths. Adjustments were made for education, alcohol, smoking, BMI, and sleep duration. The covariate adjusted model showed a 9% increase of all-cause mortality for the evening-type group (HR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.01-1.18), with attenuation mainly due to smoking and alcohol. Their importance was highlighted by observing no increased mortality among non-smokers who were at most light drinkers. There was no increase in any cause-specific mortality. Our results suggest that there is little or no independent contribution of chronotype to mortality.

Abstract
To date, behavioral genetic studies investigated either sleep or cortisol levels in middle childhood, but not both simultaneously. Therefore, a pertinent question is the degree to which genetic factors and environmental factor contribute to the correlation between sleep and cortisol levels. To address this question, we employed the classical twin design. We measured sleep in 6-9-year-old twins (N = 436 twin pairs, “Together Unique” study) over four consecutive nights using actigraphy, and we measured morning cortisol on two consecutive days. Sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and wake episodes were used as indicators of sleep. Morning cortisol level was used as cortisol indicator. A structural equation model was fitted to estimate the contribution of additive genetic effects (A), shared (common) environmental effects, (C) and unique environmental effects (E) to phenotypic variances and covariances. Age, cohort, and sex were included as covariates. The heritability of sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and wake episodes were 52%, 45%, and 55%, respectively. Common environmental factors played no significant role. High genetic correlations between sleep duration and sleep efficiency and high genetic correlations between sleep efficiency and wake episodes were found. Shared environmental (29%) and unique environmental factors (53%) explained the variance in morning cortisol levels. Because the sleep and cortisol measures were found to be uncorrelated, we did not consider genetic and environmental contributions to the association between the sleep and cortisol measures. Our findings indicate that sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and wake episodes in children are mostly impacted by genetic factors and by unique environmental factors (including measurement error). Sleep duration, efficiency and wake episodes are moderately heritable. A high genetic correlation underlies sleep duration and sleep efficiency. A high genetic correlation underlies sleep efficiency and wake episodes. Cortisol and sleep were not (genetically) correlated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The causal nature of the sleep-obesity association is unclear. To control for potential confounding by genes and shared environment, we studied monozygotic twin pairs discordant for body mass index (BMI). First, we investigated sleep in relation to BMI. Second, we examined associations of objective and subjective sleep duration and sleep debt (objective or subjective sleep duration minus subjective sleep need) with eating behaviors and physical activity (PA). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Finnish twins in everyday life circumstances. PARTICIPANTS Seventy-four healthy young adult monozygotic twin pairs, of whom 36 were BMI-discordant (∆BMI ≥ 3 kg/m2). MEASUREMENTS Clinical measurements estimated BMI and body composition. Sleep, eating, and PA behaviors were measured by self-report and actigraphy. RESULTS Compared to co-twins with lower BMI, co-twins with higher BMI reported shorter sleep (P = .043), more snoring (P = .0093), and greater tiredness (P = .0013) and trended toward eveningness (P = .036). Actigraphy-measured sleep duration correlated highly within BMI-discordant twin pairs (r = 0.63, P = .004). Subjective sleep debt was consistently positively associated with disinhibited eating and binge eating, but not with BMI. Subjective and objective sleep debt had negative correlations with moderate-to-vigorous PA. CONCLUSIONS Twins with higher BMI showed less favorable sleep characteristics than their co-twins with lower BMI. Subjective sleep debt is a potential target for intervention to reduce eating and PA behaviors that promote weight gain. Experimental studies could elucidate mechanisms underlying tiredness in individuals with higher BMI and investigate causal relationships between sleep debt, BMI, and lifestyle.

Abstract
Epidemiological and interventional research has highlighted sleep as a potentially modifiable risk factor associated with poor physical and mental health. Emerging evidence from (behavioral) genetic research also shows that sleep characteristics are under strong genetic control. With this study we aimed to meta-analyze the literature in this area to quantify the heritability of sleep duration and sleep quality in the general population. We conducted a systematic literature search in five online databases on January 24th 2020. Two authors independently screened 5644 abstracts, and 160 complete articles for the inclusion criteria of twin studies from the general population reporting heritability statistics on sleep duration and/or quality, and written in English. We ultimately included 23 papers (19 independent samples: 45,328 twins between 6 mo and 88 y) for sleep duration, and 13 papers (10 independent samples: 39,020 twins between 16 and 95 y) for sleep quality. Collectively, we showed that 46% of the variability in sleep duration and 44% of the variability in sleep quality is genetically determined. The remaining variation in the sleep characteristics can mostly be attributed to the unique environment the twins experience, although the shared environment seemed to play a role for the variability of childhood sleep duration. Meta-analyzed heritability estimates for sleep duration, however, varied substantially with age (17% infancy, 20-52% childhood, 69% adolescence and 42-45% adulthood) and reporter (8% parent-report, 38-52% self-report). Heritability estimates for actigraphic and Polysomnography (PSG)-estimated sleep were based on few small samples, warranting more research. Our findings highlight the importance of considering genetic influences when aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms contributing to the trajectories of sleep patterns across the lifespan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep deprivation is often claimed to be increasingly common, but most studies show small changes in sleep duration over the last decades. Our aim was to analyze long-term patterns in self-reported sleep duration in a population-based cohort. METHODS Members of the Older Finnish Twin Cohort have responded to questionnaires in 1975 (N = 30,915 individuals, response rate 89%, mean age 36 years), 1981 (24,535, 84%, 41 years), 1990 (12,450, 77%, 44 years), and 2011 (8334, 72%, 60 years). Weibull regression models were used to model the effects of follow-up time and age simultaneously. RESULTS Sleep duration has decreased in all adult age groups and in both genders. The mean duration was in men 7.57 h in 1975 and 7.39 in 2011, and in women 7.69 and 7.37, respectively. The decrease was about 0.5 min in men and 0.9 in women per year of follow-up. In the age-group 18-34 years, mean sleep length was 7.69 h in 1975 and 7.53 in 1990. Among 35-54-year-old it was 7.57 h in 1975 and 7.34 in 2011, and in the age group of 55+ year olds 7.52 and 7.38, correspondingly. The change was largest in middle-aged group: about 23 min or about 0.6 min per year of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS There has been a slight decrease in mean sleep duration during the 36-year follow-up. Although the sleep duration was longer in 1970s and 1980s, the probable main cause for the change in this study population is the effect of aging.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Estimate the genetic and environmental influences on the relationship between onset of regular cannabis use and young adult insomnia. METHODS In a population-based twin cohort of 1882 twins (56% female, mean age = 22.99, SD = 2.97) we explored the genetic/environmental etiology of the relationship between onset of regular cannabis use and insomnia-related outcomes via multivariate twin models. RESULTS Controlling for sex, current depression symptoms, and prior diagnosis of an anxiety or depression disorder, adult twins who reported early onset for regular cannabis use (age 17 or younger) were more likely to have insomnia (β = 0.07, p = 0.024) and insomnia with short sleep on weekdays (β = 0.08, p = 0.003) as young adults. We found significant genetic contributions for the onset of regular cannabis use (a2 = 76%, p < 0.001), insomnia (a2 = 44%, p < 0.001), and insomnia with short sleep on weekdays (a2 = 37%, p < 0.001). We found significant genetic correlations between onset of regular use and both insomnia (rA = 0.20, p = 0.047) and insomnia with short sleep on weekdays (rA = 0.25, p = 0.008) but no significant environmental associations between these traits. CONCLUSIONS We found common genetic liabilities for early onset of regular cannabis use and insomnia, implying pleiotropic influences of genes on both traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence suggests that early cannabis use is associated with sleep problems. Research is needed to understand the developmental impact of early regular cannabis use on later adult sleep duration. METHODS In a sample of 1656 adult twins (56% female, Mean age = 25.79yrs), linear mixed effects models were used to analyze the influence of retrospectively assessed age of onset of regular cannabis use on adult sleep duration controlling for sex, depression, and current substance use. Twin analyses provided genetic and environmental variance estimates as well as insights into the association and potential casual relationships between these traits. RESULTS Earlier age of onset for regular cannabis use was significantly associated with shorter adult sleep duration on both weekdays (β = -0.13, 95% CI = [-0.23, -0.04]) and weekends (β = -0.18, 95% CI = [-0.27, -0.08]). Additive genetics significantly contributed to the onset of regular cannabis use (a2 = 76%, 95% CI = [68, 85]) and adult weekend sleep duration (a2 = 20%, 95% CI = [11, 32]). We found evidence of a significant genetic correlation (rA = -0.31, 95% CI = [-0.41, -0.15]) between these two traits and our best fitting model was consistent with early onset of regular cannabis use causing shorter adult weekend sleep duration (β = -0.11, 95% CI = [-0.18, -0.03]). CONCLUSIONS Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that early onset of regular cannabis use may have a negative impact on adult sleep duration.

Abstract
The circadian clock interacts with the sleep homeostatic drive in humans. Chronotype and sleep parameters show substantial heritability, underscoring a genetic component to these measures. This article reviews the genetic underpinnings of chronotype and of sleep, including sleepiness, sleep quality and latency, and sleep timing and duration in healthy adult sleepers, drawing on candidate gene and genome-wide association studies. Notably, both circadian and noncircadian genes associate with individual differences in chronotype and in sleep parameters. The article concludes with a brief discussion of future research directions.

Abstract
The sleep homeostatic Process S reflects the build-up of sleep pressure during waking and its dissipation during sleep. Process S is modelled as a saturating exponential function during waking and a decreasing exponential function during sleep. Slow wave activity is a physiological marker for non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep intensity and serves as an index of Process S. There is considerable interindividual variability in the sleep homeostatic responses to sleep and sleep deprivation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether interindividual differences in Process S are trait-like. Polysomnographic recordings of 8 nights (12-h sleep opportunities, 22:00-10:00 hours) interspersed with three 36-h periods of sustained wakefulness were performed in 11 healthy young adults. Empirical mean slow wave activity per non-REM sleep episode at episode mid-points were used for parameter estimation. Parameters of Process S were estimated using different combinations of consecutive sleep recordings, resulting in two to three sets of parameters per subject. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to assess whether the parameters were stable across the study protocol and they showed trait-like variability among individuals. We found that the group-average time constants of the build-up and dissipation of Process S were 19.2 and 2.7 h, respectively. Intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.48 to 0.56, which reflects moderate trait variability. The time constants of the build-up and dissipation varied independently among subjects, indicating two distinct traits. We conclude that interindividual differences in the parameters of the dynamics of the sleep homeostatic Process S are trait-like.

Abstract
In this study, we hypothesized that dynamics of sleep time obtained over consecutive days of extended sleep in a laboratory reflect an individual's optimal sleep duration (OSD) and that the difference between OSD and habitual sleep duration (HSD) at home represents potential sleep debt (PSD). We found that OSD varies among individuals and PSD showed stronger correlation with subjective/objective sleepiness than actual sleep time, interacting with individual's vulnerability of sleep loss. Furthermore, only 1 h of PSD takes four days to recover to their optimal level. Recovery from PSD was also associated with the improvement in glycometabolism, thyrotropic activity and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. Additionally, the increase (rebound) in total sleep time from HSD at the first extended sleep would be a simple indicator of PSD. These findings confirmed self-evaluating the degree of sleep debt at home as a useful clinical marker. To establish appropriate sleep habits, it is necessary to evaluate OSD, vulnerability to sleep loss, and sleep homeostasis characteristics on an individual basis.

Abstract
Humans spend a third of their lives asleep. A well-balanced synchrony between sleep and wakefulness is needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Optimal sleep is based on an individual's inherent sleep requirement and circadian rhythm. If either one or both of these critical elements are disrupted, daytime dysfunction, non-restorative sleep, and/or reduced sense of well-being may result. While the medical community is more familiar with sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy, circadian rhythm sleep wake disorders (CRSWDs) are less known, despite these being common within the general population. CRSWDs are comprised of the following: shiftwork disorder, delayed sleep phase disorder, advanced sleep phase disorder, jet lag disorder, non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder, and irregular sleep-wake rhythm disorder. In general, a CRSWD results when there is misalignment between the sleep pattern and the desired sleep schedule, dictated by work, family, and social schedules. Subsequently, patients have difficulty falling asleep, maintaining sleep, and/or experience poor quality sleep predisposing them to insomnia or excessive sleepiness. In this article, we review the core concepts related to sleep, and sleep deprivation in the context of CRSWDs.

Abstract
This study assessed to what extent genetic and environmental factors contributed to individual differences in adolescent sleep duration, and whether genetic and environmental contributions to sleep duration changed throughout adolescence. A twin-family design was used to gain insight into the genetic and environmental contributions to variation in sleep duration. The study sample consisted of 6,319 adolescent twins (44% males) and 1,359 non-twin siblings (44% males) in the age range of 12 to 20 years (mean age = 16.85,SD= 1.40). The participants self-reported usual sleep duration, which was categorized as less than 8 hours per night, 8–9 hours per night, and more than 9 hours per night. Results showed that the prevalence of shorter than optimum sleep duration, that is, less than 8 hours per night, was high, with the highest prevalence rates in later adolescence. The contribution of genetic and environmental factors to individual differences in sleep duration was dependent on age. Variation in sleep duration at the age of 12 years was accounted for by genetic (boys: 34%, girls: 36%), shared environmental (boys: 28%, girls: 45%), and non-shared environmental factors (boys: 38%, girls: 19%). At the age of 20 years, the role of genetic (boys: 47%, girls: 33%) and non-shared environmental factors (boys: 53%, girls: 67%) was more pronounced. It can be concluded from the results that individual differences in sleep duration were accounted for by genetic and non-shared environmental factors throughout adolescence, whereas shared environmental factors account for a substantial part of variation during early adolescence only.
