Abstract
The N-terminal fragment of prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) contribute information regarding cardiac load and function and myocardial injury, respectively, to the clinical work-up of dogs with heart disease. The English bull terrier (BT) has a predisposition to a complex cardiac phenotype. This prospective case-control study aimed to further characterize this phenotype through cardiac biomarker evaluation. Fifteen healthy BT (group 1) and 50 BT with various heart disease presentations (groups 2-4) were included. The main presentations were MVD (45 dogs) and MS (13 dogs). 16/50 dogs had echocardiographic evidence of cardiac remodeling: 7 with either increased left atrial (LA) or left ventricular (LV) volumes (group 3) and 9 with increased LA and LV volumes (group 4). Cardiac biomarkers were not significantly different between dogs with disease subtypes MVD or MS versus dogs with other disease presentations. When evaluated in relation to remodeling, median NT-proBNP and cTnI in group 4 (1004 pmol/L, 0.09 ng/mL) were significantly higher than in group 1 (257 pmol/L, 0.02 ng/mL), group 2 (300 pmol/L, 0.026 ng/mL) and group 3 (250 pmol/L, 0.02 ng/mL). There was significant discriminatory ability for both biomarkers between group 4 and groups 1, 2 or 3. Furthermore, cTnI significantly differentiated dogs with any degree of remodeling (groups 3 + 4) from those without (groups 1 + 2). The cardiac disease phenotype of the BT is not associated with a unique cardiac biomarker profile. Rather, biomarker levels are similar to those reported in other breeds with valvular heart disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correct assessment of left atrial size and function is essential to evaluate the severity of degenerative mitral valve disease in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Evaluate left atrial (LA) dimension and function in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) at different ACVIM stages and the accuracy of linear and volumetric indexes to assess LA enlargement. ANIMALS One hundred and ninety-eight privately owned CKCS. METHODS Multicentric prospective observational cross-sectional study. Dogs underwent an echocardiographic exam for breed screening or cardiac examination. Linear and volumetric echocardiographic LA size and function indexes were compared between classes. RESULTS Dogs were allocated as follows: 43 in class ACVIM A, 58 ACVIM B1, 55 ACVIM B2, and 42 ACVIM C/D. Only LA anteroposterior diameter normalized on body weight (LADn) and LA maximal, minimal and P volumes (LAVmax, LAVmin, LAVP) differed across all pairwise comparisons. Active LA emptying fraction (aLAEF) was higher in class B1 compared to class A (P < .001), and then decreased in class C/D compared to class B2 (P < .001). This suggests an increase in the left atrial active component due to the Frank-Starling mechanism in ACVIM B1 dogs, and the presence of atrial dysfunction in symptomatic dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE The LADn and LAV are higher in CKCS in class ACVIM B1 compared to class ACVIM A, suggesting the presence of LA remodelling at the early stages of the disease. Atrial dysfunction is evident in symptomatic dogs.

Abstract
Introduction Left atrial volume (LAV) obtained using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) is an independent predictor of post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) in humans; however, no studies have investigated LAV obtained using RT3DE as a predictor of post-capillary PH in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of LAV obtained using RT3DE compared to that obtained using two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) in dogs with MMVD, with or without PH. Methods Medical records and echocardiographic images of 237 privately owned dogs with naturally occurring MMVD with or without PH were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 49 privately owned dogs with naturally occurring MMVD, with or without PH, were finally included (35 MMVD without PH, 14 MMVD with PH). The LAV and left ventricular volumes were obtained using 2DE and RT3DE. Echocardiographic parameters were analyzed to identify independent predictors of post-capillary PH. Results We found that the left atrial and left ventricular volumes obtained using 2DE and RT3DE indexed to body weight and several 2DE-derived variables were univariately associated with post-capillary PH. Furthermore, multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that the RT3DE minimum LAV indexed to body weight (LAVi min) was the only significant independent predictor of post-capillary PH (odds ratio, 12.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.40-68.99; p = 0.003), with the highest area under the curve value of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75-0.96; p < 0.001). Discussion In conclusion, LAV indexed to body weight obtained using 2DE and RT3DE, can be a useful predictor of post-capillary PH in dogs with MMVD. In particular, the RT3DE LAVi min was observed to be the strongest predictor of post-capillary PH.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the most common canine heart disease with a high predisposition in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs). Mitral regurgitation related to DMVD can lead to left atrial (LA) dilation, which is associated with survival time. Left-atrial-to-aortic (LA:Ao) ratio assessed by two-dimensional echocardiography is commonly used to evaluate LA size. The objectives of this prospective observational study were therefore 1) to compare different echocardiographic methods (i.e., monoplane and biplane Simpson's methods of discs (SMOD) and area-length methods (ALM)) in evaluating LA volume (LAvol) in CKCSs, 2) to assess LA volumes according to DMVD severity and, 3) compare the ability of LAvol and LA:Ao ratio to identify LA enlargement in CKCSs with subclinical DMVD (i.e., American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage B). MATERIALS AND METHODS 155 CKCSs, either healthy or affected by DMVD, were recruited. Variability and concordance between volumetric methods were evaluated. Values were analyzed according to 2019 ACVIM stages. RESULTS All Lin's concordance correlation coefficients regarding intra- and inter-observer variability were considered as very good to excellent. Monoplane methods and ALM produced higher values of LAvol than biplane methods and SMOD, respectively. The upper limit of normal end-systolic LAvol/body weight (LASvol/BW) was defined as 0.90 mL/kg. Left atrial volumes significantly increased with ACVIM stages. Additionally, 37% of stage B1 CKCSs demonstrated LA enlargement using LASvol/BW assessment, with significantly lower LASvol/BW values in dogs with regurgitation fraction ≤30% than in others (p<0.01). CONCLUSION In CKCSs, LAvol methods are not interchangeable. In ACVIM stage B CKCSs, LAvol quantification is more effective to detect LA enlargement than LA linear measurements.

Abstract
This review includes 36 studies of transthoracic real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) in animals. Most of these studies concern cardiac chamber quantification of the left atrium and left ventricle, in dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and different two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) methods have been reported in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dilated cardiomyopathy, and in healthy control dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and standard reference methods have been reported in healthy control dogs. In dogs with MMVD, volumetric RT3DE measurements of left atrium do not appear to provide superior prognostic value compared with 2DE methods using Simpson's method of discs in dogs with MMVD. The major advantages of RT3DE compared to 2DE include improvements in visualization of the complex morphology of the mitral valve, the estimation of mitral valve regurgitation, and improved visualization of complex congenital cardiac abnormalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left atrial enlargement indicates severe cardiac disease. Although the gold standard for determining left atrial size is echocardiography, many veterinary practices lack the necessary equipment and expertise. Therefore, thoracic radiography is often used to differentiate cardiogenic pulmonary edema from primary respiratory diseases and to facilitate distinguishing dogs with stage B1 and B2 mitral valve degeneration. METHODS The goal was to test a new standardized method for identifying radiographic left atrial enlargement. On a lateral radiograph, a straight line was drawn from the dorsal border of the tracheal bifurcation to the crossing point of the dorsal border of the caudal vena cava and the most cranial crus of the diaphragm. If a part of the left atrium extended this line dorsally, it was considered enlarged. Echocardiographic left atrial to aortic ratio (LA:Ao) was used as a reference. Thirty-nine observers with various levels of experience evaluated 90 radiographs, first subjectively, then applying the new method. RESULTS The new method moderately correlated with LA:Ao (r = 0.56-0.66) in all groups. The diagnostic accuracy (72-74%) of the subjective assessment and the new method showed no difference. CONCLUSIONS Though the new method was not superior to subjective assessment, it may facilitate learning and subjective interpretation.

Abstract
Introduction Cardiovascular diseases have been identified as a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Borneo orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus). Transthoracic echocardiography is usually performed under anesthesia in great apes, which may be stressful and increase risks of peri-anesthetic complications in case of cardiac alteration. The aim of the present pilot study was hence to develop a quick and non-stressful echocardiographic method (i.e., the COOLEST method) in awake Borneo orangutans (CardiOvascular examination in awake Orangutans: Low-stress Echocardiography including Speckle Tracking imaging) and assess the variability of corresponding variables. Materials and methods Four adult Borneo orangutans trained to present their chest to the trainers were involved. A total of 96 TTE examinations were performed on 4 different days by a trained observer examining each orangutan 6 times per day. Each examination included four two-dimensional views, with offline assessment of 28 variables (i.e., two-dimensional (n = 12), M-mode and anatomic M-mode (n = 6), Doppler (n = 7), and speckle tracking imaging (n = 3)), representing a total of 2,688 measurements. A general linear model was used to determine the within-day and between-day coefficients of variation. Results Mean±SD (minimum-maximum) images acquisition duration was 3.8±1.6 minutes (1.3–6.3). All within-day and between-day coefficients of variation but one (n = 55/56, 98%) were <15%, and most (51/56, 91%) were <10% including those of speckle tracking systolic strain variables (2.7% to 5.4%). Discussion Heart morphology as well as global and regional myocardial function can be assessed in awake orangutans with good to excellent repeatability and reproducibility. Conclusions This non-stressful method may be used for longitudinal cardiac follow-up in awake orangutans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To present the prevalence and distribution of heart disease as well as echocardiographic findings in English Bull Terriers. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and one English Bull Terriers were retrospectively included to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of heart disease. Secondly, a retrospective study on mitral valve abnormalities was performed on three groups: a control group (n=120, 19 breeds) used to establish reference intervals for mean transmitral gradient; a healthy English Bull Terriers group (n=25) and an English Bull Terriers group with mitral valve abnormalities (n= 18). Healthy English Bull Terriers for which mitral inflow parameters were not obtainable and English Bull Terriers with other types of heart disease were excluded. RESULTS The prevalence of heart disease in English Bull Terriers was 65% (66/101), with mitral valve abnormalities (47%, 47/101) and aortic stenosis (29%, 29/101) being most common. The cut-off value for normal mean transmitral gradient was 3.5 mmHg in the control group. The mean transmitral gradient for healthy English Bull Terriers was higher than for other dog breeds. Healthy English Bull Terriers had a smaller mitral valve area and mitral annulus diameter compared with dogs with a similar body surface area. A high heart rate, smaller mitral valve area, mitral regurgitation, and volume overload are associated with increased mean transmitral gradient in English Bull Terriers with mitral valve abnormalities. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE We suggest that mitral valve area, mitral annulus diameter and mean transmitral gradient measurements should be included in the echocardiographic protocol for English Bull Terriers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although challenging, predicting outcomes in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is of importance to owners and veterinarians. Our aim was to compare the prognostic value of selected one-, two-, and three-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic methods to predict cardiac-related and all-cause mortality in MMVD dogs. We hypothesize that three-dimensional methods would better predict prognosis than one- and two-dimensional methods. ANIMALS One-hundred thirty-eight privately-owned dogs with MMVD. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cox proportional Hazard analyses and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to investigate the predictive value of 14 variables; left atrial (LA) volume indexed to body weight (BW) measured by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) and calculated using Simpson's modified method of discs (SMOD) and the area-length method; LA diameter in short-axis and long-axis to aortic in short-axis ratio, effective regurgitant orifice area indexed to body surface area measured in RT3DE en face view and calculated using four-chamber (4Ch) and two-chamber views alone or in combination; percentage increase in left ventricular end-diastolic and systolic internal diameters; fractional shortening; E wave velocity; regurgitant jet area/LA area. RESULTS All 14 variables were significantly predictive of cardiac-related mortality, and 11 were predictive of all-cause mortality. The prognosis was best predicted by LA volume/BW estimated by SMOD or RT3DE, consistently showing the highest predictive value in all analyses. CONCLUSIONS Left atrial volume calculated by SMOD showed a similar predictive value compared to RT3DE. Performing SMOD from apical 4Ch images should be considered an alternative to RT3DE for echocardiographic examinations where prognostication of disease outcome is sought.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mitral valve area (MVA) planimetry is used to diagnose and classify mitral stenosis (MS) in humans using two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiography (MVA2D and MVA3D). This study aimed to evaluate agreement, feasibility, and observer variability between MVA2D and MVA3D in English Bull Terriers (BT). Our hypotheses were (1) that the MVA of BT is generally smaller than that of breeds with similar body weight and (2) that these techniques could be used to diagnose MS in BTs. ANIMALS Twenty healthy BTs, 15 healthy Boxers, and 49 BTs with heart disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective diagnostic agreement study was conducted. All dogs underwent a thorough clinical examination, conventional transthoracic echocardiography, and three-dimensional echocardiography. RESULTS Bland-Altman plots (limits of agreement: 0.12-1.5) showed consistent bias and poor agreement between MVA2D and MVA3D. For the 69 BTs, MVA3D (2.1 ± 0.50 cm2) measurements were significantly lower than MVA2D measurements (2.9 ± 0.60 cm2), and healthy BTs had significantly lower MVA parameters than healthy Boxers (p < 0.001). Intraobserver and interobserver variability were excellent for both MVA2D and MVA3D (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.9). Six BTs were diagnosed with MS, with MVA3D less than 1.8 cm2 and a mean transmitral gradient (MTG) of more than 5 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS Both MVA2D and MVA3D are feasible, have low observer variability and can be used to diagnose MS in BTs. For assessing the narrowest orifice area, the preferred method is MVA3D. The smaller MVA in BTs compared to Boxers may indicate some degree of MS.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the value of real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT-3DE) in evaluating changes in left atrial volume and function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and type 2 diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients. Method: 104 control subjects, 109 DN patients, and 111 DM patients were recruited and underwent RT-3DE. Data pertaining to the left atrium were analyzed using the 3DQA software in order to determine left atrial maximum volume index (LAVImax), left atrial pre-systolic volume index (LAVIp), left atrial minimum volume index (LAVImin), total left atrial ejection fraction (LAEFt), passive left atrial ejection fraction (LAEFp), and active left atrial ejection fraction (LAEFa). Differences between these three groups and correlations between individual index values and E/e' ratios were additionally assessed. Result: LAVImax, LAVIp, and LAVImin were higher in the DN and DM groups relative to controls, whereas LAEFt and LAEFp were higher in controls relative to DM and DN patients (P < 0.05). LAVImax, LAVIp, and LAVImin in the DN group were significantly higher than those in the DM group, while LAEFt, LAEFp were higher in DM patients relative to DN patients (P < 0.05). The E/e' ratio was also found to be significantly correlated with LAVImax, LAVIp, and LAVImin. Conclusion: Our results indicate that RT-3DE can be used to assess changes in left atrial volume and function in patients with diabetes and can be used to monitor disease progression-related damage to such left atrial functionality.

Abstract
Background Reliability of echocardiographic measurements of left atrial (LA) size, an important marker of disease severity, has not been reported in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Objectives To define and compare reliability of left atrial dimension/diameter (LAD), LAD indexed to aortic valve diameter (LAD/AoD), left atrium‐to‐aortic root ratio (LA/Ao), left atrial volume acquired from a right parasternal long‐axis (LAVRPLx), and left apical view (LAVLAP) in dogs with subclinical MMVD. Animals Nine dogs with subclinical MMVD. Methods Prospective reproducibility study. Dogs underwent 12 echocardiographic examinations by 2 operators on the mornings and afternoons of 3 nonconsecutive days within 1 week. Reliability (measurement variability) was quantified using coefficients of variation (CV) and 95% repeatability/reproducibility coefficients (95% RC). A mixed‐model analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if time of day, day, and operator were significant sources of variability for each index. Results Linear measurements (LAD, LAD/AoD, and LA/Ao) exhibited less within‐day, between‐day, and interoperator variability (CVs, 3.9%‐12.5%) than did volume estimate measurements (LAVRPLx and LAVLAP; CVs, 11.8%‐17.9%). Of the linear measurements, LA/Ao exhibited greater variability (CVs, 9.9%‐12.5%) compared to LAD and LAD/AoD (CVs, 3.9%‐4.9%). Operator was a significant (P = .005) source of variability for LA/Ao. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Compared to other linear measurements, LA/Ao was the least reproducible and most dependent on operator. The 95% RC for each LA size index are provided to help identify clinically relevant changes (beyond intraoperator or interoperator variability) during serial echocardiographic examinations of dogs with subclinical MMVD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We hypothesized that real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT-3DE) was superior to two-dimensional echocardiography for the estimation of left atrial volume (LAV), using electrocardiographic (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) as a volumetric gold standard. The aim was to compare maximum LAV (LAVmax) and minimum LAV (LAVmin) measured by biplane area-length method (ALM), biplane method of disk (MOD) and RT-3DE with 64-slice ECG-gated MDCTA in dogs ANIMALS: The study included twenty dogs, anaesthetized for various diagnostic purposes and without evidence of cardiovascular disease. METHODS Left atrial volume was estimated by ALM, MOD and RT-3DE following ECG-gated MDCTA. The results were compared with LAV from MDCTA and correlations were performed. The limits of agreement (LoA) between methods were evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis and intraclass correlations. Coefficients of variation were calculated. RESULTS Area-length method (r = 0.79 and 0.72), MOD (r = 0.81 and 0.70) and RT-3DE (r = 0.94 and 0.82) correlated with MDCTA for LAVmax and LAVmin, respectively (all p < 0.05). Biases for LAVmax (-0.96 mL, 95% LoA: -5.6 to 3.7) and LAVmin (-0.67 mL, 95% LoA: -5.4 - 4.1) were minimal with RT-3DE, reflecting a slight underestimation. Conversely, MOD (LAVmaxbias = 3.19 mL, 95% LoA: -5.7 - 12.1; LAVminbias = 1.96 mL, 95% LoA: -4.6 - 8.5) and ALM (LAVmaxbias = 4.05, 95% LoA: -5.7 - 13.8; LAVminbias = 2.80 mL, 95% LoA: -3.9 - 9.5) suggested LAV overestimation. Intraobserver and interobserver variability were adequate. CONCLUSIONS Real-time three-dimensional echocardiography is a non-invasive, accurate and feasible method with superior accuracy to two-dimensional methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assessment of left atrial (LA) size is important in medical decision making and prognostication in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Real-time 3-dimensional (RT3DE) and 2-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) methods may be used to assess LA size. OBJECTIVES To compare measured LA volumes obtained by RT3DE with those calculated by biplane Simpson's modified method of discs (SMOD) and the area-length method (ALM) using the same RT3DE acquisition with the same timing. ANIMALS One hundred twenty-one privately owned dogs with naturally occurring MMVD. METHODS Prospective observational study comparing LA volumes indexed to body weight using RT3DE and 2DE-based biplane SMOD and ALM. Agreement between methods was evaluated using Bland-Altman plots and linear regression analyses. RESULTS Estimations of LA volume using SMOD or ALM did not show good agreement with RT3DE-derived measurements. Absolute differences between methods increased with increasing LA volume, but SMOD underestimated whereas ALM overestimated calculated volumes compared to RT3DE-derived measurements. The difference in LA volume between RT3DE and the biplane methods showed a systematic underestimation of 7% for SMOD and a systematic overestimation of 24% for ALM. Comparison of LA volumes obtained by SMOD and ALM did not show good agreement. The ALM yielded 30% larger LA volumes compared to SMOD. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE In comparison with RT3DE, SMOD systematically underestimated whereas ALM systematically overestimated LA volumes in dogs with MMVD. Because the systematic difference between RT3DE and SMOD was only 7%, SMOD might be considered the method of choice.
