Abstract
Bladder tumors in dogs represent approximately 2% of all malignant lesions recorded, with urothelial carcinoma being the most common and aggressive form. This study aimed to characterize the elastographic properties of canine urothelial carcinoma using ARFI (Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse) elastography and to evaluate its diagnostic capacity. Seven dogs with urothelial carcinoma and nine healthy dogs were evaluated, comparing shear wave velocity (SWV) and bladder wall thickness between the groups. The results showed that SWV was significantly higher in dogs with urothelial carcinoma (median of 2.53 m/s) compared with healthy dogs (median of 1.41 m/s) (p = 0.0045). Bladder wall thickness was also greater in dogs with carcinoma (0.28 ± 0.05 cm) compared to healthy dogs (0.14 ± 0.26 cm) (p = 0.0003). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed a high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (88.9%) for SWV in differentiating healthy and neoplastic tissues. These findings suggest that ARFI elastography is a promising tool for diagnosing urothelial carcinoma in dogs, offering a noninvasive and quantitative approach that can complement traditional diagnostic methods. ARFI elastography may aid in early diagnosis and clinical management, improving the prognosis of patients with bladder neoplasia.

Abstract
Canine multicentric lymphoma (CML) is a prevalent hematopoietic neoplasm that initially responds well to treatment but often relapses due to chemotherapy resistance. Evaluation of treatment response is essential for effective management. Ultrasound (US) can differentiate between benign and lymphomatous lymph nodes (LLNs). However, its utility in monitoring LLNs post chemotherapy is limited. This study aimed to compare US parameters of LLNs during the first 3 weeks post treatment and evaluate their diagnostic performance compared with the conventional method for assessing treatment response. This study included 95 LLNs from 15 dogs with CML and 60 normal lymph nodes (NLNs) from 15 healthy dogs. US, including B-mode and elastography, was performed pre-treatment and weekly for 3 weeks post treatment, and compared with the results of NLNs. LLNs were categorized into partial response and stable disease groups using the conventional method. US scores were established by combining B-mode and elastography parameters. The results showed significantly higher values of LLNs in the short-to-long axis ratio, elastographic scales, and blue-to-green color histogram compared with NLNs. Additionally, LLNs at pre-treatment had significantly higher values than LLNs post treatment. US scores significantly differed among the healthy, partial response, and stable disease groups. In conclusion, B-mode US, elastography, and US scores demonstrated changes during chemotherapy consistent with the conventional method and can be used in conjunction with the conventional method to evaluate the treatment response of CML.

Abstract
The aim of this literature review was to present the novel imaging modalities elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography. We provided an overview of the concepts and applications of each technique for the investigation of neoplastic and metastatic tumors in dogs and cats. Studies on elastography are based on the elasticity and deformation of the evaluated tissue. The information obtained from the different types of elastography can aid in the detection and differentiation of malignant and benign structures. Descriptions of elastography studies in several organs and tissue in veterinary medicine reported that, in general, malignant tumors tend to be more rigid and, therefore, less deformable than benign lesions or in comparison to the healthy parenchyma. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is based on the intravenous injection of contrast media constituted by microbubbles. This imaging modality can be performed in nonsedated animals and provides information on the tissue perfusion, allowing the investigation of macro- and micro-circulation. Studies on different organs and tissues were performed in dogs and cats and revealed a tendency of malignant tumors to present faster transit of the contrast media (time to wash-in, peak and wash-out). These advanced techniques can be associated with other imaging modalities, aiding important information to the well-established exams of B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography. They can be used as screening tests, potentially representing an alternative to the invasive sampling methods required for cytological and histopathological analysis.

Abstract
Aims of our study were to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic value of two-dimensional shear wave elastography in dogs with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and acute on chronic kidney disease, its correlation with renal functional (creatinine, urea), and prognostic parameters (serum calcium-phosphorus product, urinary output), and with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (qualitative and quantitative evaluation). The study was prospective. A group of healthy (Group A) and a group of nephropathic dogs (Group B) were included. Shear wave elastography was performed on the left kidney of the subjects of both groups; contrast-enhanced ultrasound was performed only in dogs with acute kidney injury and acute on chronic kidney disease. Sixty-four dogs were included (Group A, n=24; Group B, n=40). The renal stiffness values were significantly higher in Group B than Group A; optimal cut-off stiffness values for detection of renal pathology were: ≥1.51 m/sec (area under the curve, 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.74-0.94) and ≥6.75 kPa (area under the curve, 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.73-0.94). For contrast-enhanced ultrasound, a significant positive correlation was found between renal stiffness, area under the curve, and wash-out area under the curve values of cortex quantitative analysis. No correlations were found between renal stiffness and renal functional and prognostic parameters. Shear wave elastography showed diagnostic utility to detect renal abnormalities in dogs with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and acute on chronic kidney disease, however, it could not differentiate between these different nephropathies.

Abstract
(1) Background: Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is a non-invasive method widely used in human medicine to assess the extent of liver fibrosis but only rarely applied to veterinary medicine. This study aimed to measure liver stiffness in healthy dogs and investigate the factors that impacted 2D-SWE measurement. (2) Methods: In total, 55 healthy dogs were enrolled and subjected to 2D-SWE measurements before and after anesthesia administration. Post-anesthesia 2D-SWE measurements and computerized tomography (CT) scans were obtained. (3) Results: The liver stiffness range in healthy dogs was 3.96 ± 0.53 kPa. In a stratified analysis based on confounding factors, liver stiffness was influenced by measurement site and anesthesia, but not by sex. No correlation was observed between liver stiffness and weight or liver CT attenuation. (4) Conclusions: 2D-SWE is feasible for liver stiffness measurement in dogs. Anesthesia and measurement site are sources of variability. Therefore, these factors should be considered while recording 2D-SWE measurements. Our data on liver stiffness in healthy dogs can serve as the basis for future studies on 2D-SWE to assess pathological conditions in dogs.

Abstract
Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is widely used as a noninvasive method to quantify liver stiffness. In humans, liver stiffness approximates histologic hepatic fibrosis. While histology is the gold standard for diagnosing liver disease, 2D-SWE may be a minimally invasive alternative to biopsy in feline patients. The objectives of this prospective, observational, crossover study were trifold: (1) to assess the feasibility of performing 2D-SWE in awake cats, (2) to determine whether anesthesia altered shear wave velocity (SWV) measurements, and (3) to correlate hepatic stiffness with histologically quantified hepatic fibrosis. Eleven healthy, purpose-bred cats underwent 2D-SWE in awake and anesthetized states. SWV measurements were compared with histologic fibrosis measurements obtained from liver biopsies during the anesthetic period. The mean velocities were not significantly different between awake (1.47 ± 0.18 m/s) and anesthetized (1.47 ± 0.24 m/s) cats. Premedication and anesthetic drugs did not impact mean SWV. There was a higher variability in the SWV values in the awake group. The data points were reliably replicated, with an interquartile range of 0.24 and 0.32 in anesthetized and awake groups, respectively. There was moderate agreement between observers (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.66). All cats had clinically insignificant fibrosis. There was no correlation between the SWV measurements and the histological fibrosis values. This study demonstrates that 2D-SWE is feasible in awake cats and that the anesthetic protocol employed did not significantly alter mean SWV. This work is the first to histologically validate normal SWV values in cats and show that 2D-SWE cannot differentiate minimal differences in feline hepatic fibrosis.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health condition in cats that can lead to poor quality of life and financial implications for therapy. Currently staging and identification of CKD is limited by diagnostic testing such as creatinine and urine-specific gravity, which do not change until late in the disease course. Other methods to evaluate CKD would be valuable in the clinical setting. Shear wave elastography is one novel ultrasound method, which has shown promise in identifying increases in tissue stiffness and identifying CKD in people. As CKD is often histologically characterized by tubulointerstitial fibrosis, shear wave elastography has the potential to identify CKD and differentiate between stages of CKD in cats. This prospective observational case-control study with 78 cats found no difference in shear wave velocities between groups (P = 0.33), a contradictory finding to one prior publication. There was no effect of weight (P = 0.65), nor the presence of mineralization (P = 0.31) or infarction (P = 0.52) on cortical shear wave velocities. There was a significant effect of age on shear wave velocity (P = 0.018) where velocities increased with age. The intraclass correlation coefficient was only moderate (0.62). Possible reasons for the difference in results between our work and that published prior, include differences in methodology and differences in instrumentation. Variability in measurements in our population may be due to the effects of respiratory motion or limitations in shear wave elastography software. As such, shear wave elastography is not currently recommended as a tool to evaluate CKD in cats and further work is necessary.

Abstract
Assessing the postoperative surgical success of congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (EHPSS) attenuation can be challenging and involve invasive imaging methods. Elastography is an ultrasound technique that allows qualitative and quantitative estimation of tissue stiffness and has extensively been used in people with liver disease. In recent years, increased interest in this technique has developed in veterinary medicine due to its non-invasive nature, availability, and low cost. The objective of this study was to compare liver stiffness values between dogs with closed EHPSS and those with multiple acquired portosystemic shunts (MAPSS) after gradual surgical attenuation and to assess whether shear wave elastography could be used to determine EHPSS closure. As a secondary objective, measurements obtained from both intercostal and subxiphoidal views were compared. Mean values for the average, median, and maximum two-dimensional shear wave velocities (2D SWV) for the closed EHPSS were 2.88 +/−0.11 m/s; 2.83 +/−0.11 m/s; and 3.75 +/−0.16 m/s, respectively. In the MAPSS dogs, mean values for the average, median, and maximum 2D SWV were 2.77 +/– 0.17 m/s; 2.71 +/– 0.17 m/s; and 3.66 +/−0.24 m/s, respectively. No significant differences in 2D SWV were present between dogs with closed EHPSS and those with MAPSS (P = 0.33; P = 0.33; P = 0.42, respectively). When assessing potential differences between intercostal and subxiphoidal 2D SWV measurements, no effect was observed for the average and median 2D SWV (P = 0.06; P = 0.07, respectively). Yet, a significant difference was identified for the maximum 2D SWV between intercostal 4.00 +/−0.20 m/s and subxiphoidal 3.41 +/−0.17 m/s measurements (P = 0.02). The relevance of this finding is uncertain as many other studies about liver elastography only report mean and not maximum values.

Abstract
Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is a non-invasive method to quantitatively evaluate the liver stiffness (LS), allowing the detection of hepatic pathological changes in both dogs and humans. In dogs, some factors such as patient movement and respiration can cause artefacts and potential errors of measurements. Therefore, anaesthesia has been suggested to reduce the effect of the movement on 2D-SWE in dogs. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of an anaesthetic protocol on 2D-SWE measurements for assessment of LS in healthy dogs. Forty-five dogs were included and subjected to anaesthesia: in 11 dogs, the 2D-SWE was performed both before and under anaesthesia, in 19 dogs, the 2D-SWE was performed only when they were awake and in 15 dogs, the examination was carried out only under anaesthesia. The anaesthetic protocol was composed of intramuscular injection of a combination of dexmedetomidine, methadone and ketamine and intravenous administration of propofol for induction and isoflurane for maintenance. The variability of 2D-SWE values according to anaesthesia was evaluated. Median 2D-SWE values were significantly higher in anesthetized dogs compared to awake dogs either by considering separately the dogs in which the examination was performed both awake and under anaesthesia and by considering all dogs included. According to our study, anaesthesia helped to avoid challenges related to patient movement and respiration; however, it was a source of variability on 2D-SWE values, and this factor should be considered before performing 2D-SWE under anaesthesia.

Abstract
Simple Summary An 18-year-old Salernitano stallion was presented for enlargement of the left testicle with no other clinical signs. Sonoelastographic examination showed parenchymal changes with deformation of the normal testis, appearing with an irregular profile. Unilateral orchiectomy was performed. Considering gross, microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, a definitive diagnosis of diffuse seminoma was made. Three months later, follow-up assessment showed no evidence of recurrence, preserved reproductive abilities or fertility, but did show reduced testosterone levels. Abstract An 18-year-old Salernitano stallion developed a progressive enlargement of the left testicle over eight months. An ultrasound evaluation was performed, along with a hormonal profile. A histopathological evaluation of the testis was performed after unilateral orchiectomy. On B-mode ultrasound examination, testicular parenchyma was characterized by the loss of internal structure, with the presence of multiple coalescing, nodular, well-defined and heterogeneous lesions with capsule deformity, appearing with an irregular profile. On dissection, the testicular parenchyma bulged over the cut section, confirming the increase in size. Microscopically, the lesion consisted mainly of large, densely packed, polygonal-to-round-shaped neoplastic cells. Mitotic figures were plentiful and frequently atypical; further microscopic features included apoptosis and necrosis. At immunohistochemistry, the entire neoplasm showed strong and diffuse immunolabeling for vimentin, while CD117-specific immunoreactivity was only observed in scattered clusters of neoplastic cells. Based on the gross, microscopic and IHC findings, a diagnosis of diffuse seminoma was made. Three months later, a follow-up examination showed no evidence of recurrence and the preservation of reproductive abilities. The case presented shows an unusual ultrasonographic pattern for seminoma and the basis of the correlation between the characteristics of the sonoelastographic examination and histological diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is a powerful technique that can non-invasively measure liver stiffness to assess hepatic fibrosis. Purpose This study aimed to identify the effects of confounding factors, including anesthesia, breathing, and scanning approach, on liver stiffness when performing 2D-SWE in dogs. Materials and Methods Nine healthy Beagle dogs were included in this study. Hepatic 2D-SWE was performed, and liver stiffness was compared between conscious and anesthetized states, free-breathing and breath-holding conditions, and intercostal and subcostal approaches. For the anesthetized state, the breath-holding condition was subdivided into seven phases, which included forced-expiration (5 and 10 mL/kg), end-expiration (0 cm H2O), and forced-inspiration (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm H2O), and liver stiffness was compared among these phases. Changes in liver stiffness were compared between intercostal and subcostal approaches according to breathing phases. Results No significant difference was observed in liver stiffness between the conscious and anesthetized states or between the free-breathing and breath-holding conditions. No significant difference was noted in liver stiffness among the breathing phases, except for forced-inspiration with high airway pressure (15 and 20 cm H2O in the intercostal approach and 10, 15, and 20 cm H2O in the subcostal approach), which was associated with significantly higher liver stiffness (p < 0.05). Liver stiffness was significantly higher in the subcostal approach than in the intercostal approach (p < 0.05). Changes in liver stiffness were significantly higher in the subcostal approach than in the intercostal approach in all forced-inspiratory phases (p < 0.05). Conclusion In conclusion, when performing 2D-SWE in dogs, liver stiffness is unaffected by anesthesia and free-breathing. To avoid inadvertent increases in liver stiffness, the deep inspiratory phase and subcostal approach are not recommended. Thus, liver stiffness should be interpreted considering these confounding factors.

To compare shear-wave velocities (SWVs) with shear-wave elastography of various peripheral lymph nodes (LNs).
ANIMALS
11 healthy Beagles.
PROCEDURES
For each dog, bilateral mandibular, medial retropharyngeal, superficial cervical, axillary, superficial inguinal, and popliteal LNs were evaluated with shear-wave elastography in sagittal and transverse scanning planes. Depth of each lymph node was recorded, and intra- and interobserver reliability was determined.
RESULTS
SWVs for all LNs were significantly higher in the sagittal scanning plane, compared with those in the transverse scanning plane. The SWV of the most superficial LN, the mandibular LN, was significantly higher, compared with that for the other LNs, except for the medial retropharyngeal LN. The SWV of the deepest LN, the medial retropharyngeal LN, was as high as that for the mandibular LN. Intra- and interobserver reliability was excellent.
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE
SWVs for normal peripheral LNs of Beagles may serve as a reference to compare with those for other breeds and diseased LNs. Scanning plane, LN depth, and interfering tissues between the LN and the transducer may affect SWV. Shear-wave elastography may not be operator dependent.

Abstract
Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) can be used to quantitatively evaluate the elastic modulus of the liver as shear wave velocity (SWV), which can noninvasively predict clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis in both dogs and humans. However, extrahepatic biliary obstruction (EHBO), regardless of the presence of clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis, can influence SWVs in humans and thus may interfere with hepatic fibrosis prediction using 2D-SWE in dogs. The aim of this prospective, observational, and one-group pretest-posttest study is to investigate whether SWV measured by 2D-SWE displays a difference between dogs with and without EHBO. A total of 20 dogs were included (7 with EHBO and 13 with gallbladder pathology but no EHBO) that underwent preoperative SWV measurement using 2D-SWE. In all dogs, stages of hepatic fibrosis were evaluated histopathologically using a scoring scheme. In addition, postoperative SWVs in dogs with EHBO relieved via laparotomy were also evaluated. The median (range) SWVs in the dogs with and without EHBO were 1.91 (1.81-2.54) m/s and 1.57 (1.37-1.64) m/s, respectively. Although there was no significant difference in the histopathological hepatic fibrosis stages between the dogs with and without EHBO, the preoperative SWVs in the dogs with EHBO were significantly higher than in dogs without EHBO (P = .0004), and SWVs were found to decrease significantly after surgery (P = .0097). This study demonstrates that EHBO can increase the SWV of dogs without clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis and can interfere with the prediction of noninvasive hepatic fibrosis using 2D-SWE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate stiffness of the liver parenchyma in healthy adult cats by means of point shear wave elastography (PSWE). ANIMALS 18 client-owned adult (1- to 6-year-old) healthy cats. PROCEDURES Echogenicity and echotexture of the liver parenchyma were assessed by means of conventional B-mode ultrasonography. The shear wave velocity (Vs) of the right and left portions of the liver were measured by means of PSWE. RESULTS B-mode ultrasonography revealed no abnormalities in echotexture or echogenicity of the liver parenchyma in any cat. Mean (95% CI) Vs in the liver parenchyma was 1.46 m/s (1.36 to 1.55 m/s) for the right portion, 1.36 m/s (1.26 to 1.47 m/s) for the left portion, and 1.43 m/s (1.35 to 1.51 m/s) overall. The difference in mean Vs between the 2 portions of the liver was significant. No significant correlation was found between Vs and body weight or between Vs and the depth at which this variable was measured. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Quantitative PSWE of the liver was feasible in healthy adult cats. The obtained values for Vs may be useful for interpretation of and comparison with values measured in cats with liver disease. Additional research is needed to explore the potential usefulness of PSWE for diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
Given the broad overlap of normal and abnormal liver tissue in the subjective evaluation of the liver in conventional B-mode ultrasonography, there is a need for a non-invasive and quantitative method for the diagnosis of liver disease. Novel two-dimensional shear-wave elastography (2-D SWE) can measure tissue stiffness by propagation of the shear wave induced using acoustic radiation force impulse in real time. To the best of our knowledge, two-dimensional shear-wave measurement of the liver in cats has not been reported to date. This study assessed the feasibility, reliability, normal values, and related influencing factors of 2-D SWE for assessment of the feline liver without anesthesia and breath-holding. Two-dimensional shear-wave ultrasonography was performed by two evaluators at the right and left sides of the liver. Twenty-nine client-owned clinically healthy adult cats were included. The means and standard deviations for the shear-wave speed and stiffness in the right liver were 1.52 ± 0.13 m/s and 6.94 ± 1.26 kPa, respectively, and those for the left liver were 1.61 ± 0.15 m/s and 7.90 ± 1.47 kPa, respectively. Shear-wave speed (P = 0.005) and stiffness (P = 0.002) were significantly lower in the right liver when compared to the left. The intraclass correlation value for liver stiffness was 0.835 and 0.901 for the right and left liver, respectively, indicating high interobserver agreement. Age, weight, body condition score (BCS), gabapentin administration, and measurement depths were not significantly correlated with liver stiffness or elastography measurements (P > 0.05). Our findings suggest that 2-D SWE measurements of the liver are not influenced significantly by age, weight, or BCS and can be reliably performed without anesthesia and breath-holding in cats. The values determined here can help form the basis for reference elastography values for evaluation of the feline liver.

Abstract
Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a feasible and newly developed ultrasonographic technique which is able to assess elasticity of tissues. The aim of this work was to assess the feasibility of SWE on the normal canine common calcaneal tendon (CCT) evaluating the intra-operator repeatability and reproducibility of single measurements and stiffness of different anatomic CCT portions was examined. Tendons were first evaluated with B-mode ultrasound with a linear probe 8.5 to 10 MHz in longitudinal section with slight flexed tarsocrural joint and a gel-pad. Common calcaneal tendon was divided into three different anatomical regions. Shear wave elastography was performed in each region by two operators and quantitative evaluation (m/s and kPa) was performed on the most representative images. Region of interest (0.15 cm) was settled. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) results were classified using the following scale: 0.00 to 0.20 = poor; 0.20 to 0.40 = fair; 0.40 to 075 = good; >0.75 = excellent. Ten adult dogs were enrolled. Intra-operator ICC values were >0.75 for both operators in every tendon portion. Inter-operator SWE ICC values for m/s measurements were 0.3, 0.61 and 0.61 for the enthesis, intermediate portion and the myotendinous junction respectively; for kPa measurements, values were respectively 0.3, 0.7 and 0.81. The three CCT portions were significantly different in stiffness (p-value < 0.001 for both m/s and kPa measurements). These preliminary results provide evidence that SWE is potentially appliable to assess mechanical properties of canine CCT affected by tendinopathies.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is correlated to alterations in liver and spleen elasticity. Forty-eight brachycephalic and 22 mesocephalic dogs were submitted to a BOAS functional assessment, laboratory tests, abdominal ultrasound and liver and spleen Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) elastography. Dogs clinically affected by BOAS had higher values of liver stiffness (p < 0.001) than healthy dogs: medial lobes (1.57 ± 0.37 m/s), left and right lateral lobes (1.54 ± 0.50 m/s, 1.23 ± 0.28 m/s, respectively) and caudate lobe (1.28 ± 0.42 m/s). Compared to the mesocephalic group, the brachycephalic group (BOAS clinically affected and unaffected dogs) had higher spleen (2.51 ± 0.45 m/s; p < 0.001) and liver stiffness (p < 0.001): medial lobes (1.53 ± 0.37 m/s), left and right lateral lobes (1.47 ± 0.47 m/s, 1.20 ± 0.30 m/s, respectively) and caudate lobe (1.23 ± 0.40 m/s). Principal component analysis explained 70% of the variances composed by liver stiffness increase, erythrocytes and alanine aminotransferase reduction. Brachycephalic dogs had higher spleen and liver stiffness and a subacute inflammatory state, which represent another BOAS systemic effect. Consequently, these dogs can be at higher risk of hepatic disorders compared with mesocephalic dogs, similarly to humans affected by sleep apnea syndrome.

Abstract
Shear wave elastography (SWE) induces lateral shear wave through acoustic pulses of the transducer and evaluates tissue stiffness quantitatively. This study was performed to evaluate feasibility and reproducibility of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) for evaluation of tissue stiffness and to examine technical factors that affect shear wave speed (SWS) measurements in adult dogs. Nine healthy, 2 year-old, adult beagles with the median weight of 9.8 kg were included. In this prospective, experimental, exploratory study, 2D SWE (Aplio 600) from the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, prostate, lymph nodes (submandibular, retropharyngeal, axillary, medial iliac, and inguinal), submandibular salivary gland, and thyroid was performed in anesthetized beagles. Color map was drawn and SWS of each SWE were measured as Young’s modulus (kPa) and shear wave velocity (m/s). The effect of measuring site, scan approach, depth, and anesthesia on SWE was assessed in abdominal organs by two observers independently. A total of 27 SWE examinations were performed in 12 organs by each observer. All SWS measurements were preformed successfully; however, SWE in the renal medulla could not be successfully conducted, and it was excluded from further analysis. Interobserver agreement of SWE was moderate to excellent in all organs, except for the left liver lobe at 10–15 mm depth with the intercostal scan. In the liver, there was no significant effect of the measuring site and scan approach on SWE. SWS of the liver and spleen tended to be higher with increasing the depth, but no significant difference. However, anesthesia significantly increased tissue stiffness in the spleen compared to awake dog regardless of the depth (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in SWS according to the measuring site in the kidneys and pancreas (P < 0.001). 2D SWE was feasible and highly reproducible for the estimation of tissue stiffness in dogs. Measuring site and anesthesia are sources of variability affecting SWE in abdominal organs. Therefore, these factors should be considered during SWS measurement in 2D SWE. This study provides basic data for further studies on 2D SWE on pathological conditions that may increase tissue stiffness in dogs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) can noninvasively evaluate hepatic elastic modulus as shear wave velocity (SWV). Additionally, it may predict the presence of clinical relevant hepatic fibrosis (≥F2) in dogs with hepatic disease. OBJECTIVES To investigate whether SWV measured by 2D-SWE can differentiate between dogs with (≥F2) and without (F0-1) clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis. ANIMALS Twenty-eight client-owned dogs with hepatic disease and 8 normal healthy Beagle dogs were enrolled. METHODS In this cross-sectional prospective study, SWVs were measured using 2D-SWE in all dogs. Hepatic fibrosis stages and necroinflammatory activity grades were histopathologically evaluated using a histological scoring scheme that was adapted from the Ishak schema used in human medicine. RESULTS Median SWVs were significantly higher in dogs with clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis (2.04 m/s; range, 1.81-2.26 m/s) than in healthy dogs (1.51 m/s; range, 1.44-1.66 m/s; P = .007), and dogs without clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis (1.56 m/s; range, 1.37-1.67 m/s; P < .001). However, no significant difference was found in the SWVs between dogs without clinically relevant hepatic fibrosis and healthy dogs (P = .99). Furthermore, median SWVs were not significantly different among dogs with necroinflammatory activity, those without necroinflammatory activity, and healthy dogs (Kruskal-Wallis test, P = .12). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE The 2D-SWE may be useful for predicting the presence of hepatic fibrosis in dogs with hepatic disease.
