Responses of leaf C:N:P stoichiometry to water supply in the desert shrub Zygophyllum xanthoxylum

Effects of drought and salt stress on seed germination and seedling growth of Elymus nutans

Drought and soil salinization are global environmental issues, and Elymus nutans play an important role in vegetation restoration in arid and saline environments due to their excellent stress resistance. In the process of vegetation restoration, the stage from germination to seedling growth of forage is crucial. This experiment studied the effects of PEG-6000 simulated drought stress and NaCl simulated salinization stress on the germination of E. nutans seeds, and explored the growth of forage seedlings from sowing to 28 days under drought and salinization stress conditions. The results showed that under the same environmental water potential, there were significant differences in responses of seed germination, seedling growth, organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus of above-ground and underground parts of E. nutans to drought stress and salinization stress. Using the membership function method to comprehensively evaluate the seed germination and seedling indicators of E. nutans, it was found that under the same environmental water potential, E. nutans was more severely affected by drought stress during both the seed germination and seedling growth stages. E. nutans showed better salt tolerance than drought resistance.

C:N:P stoichiometry of plant-soil-microbe in the secondary succession of zokor-made mounds on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The knowledge of ecological stoichiometry and stoichiometric homeostasis could contribute to exploring the balance of chemical elements in ecological recovery. However, it is largely unknown how the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and stoichiometric characteristics in the plant-soil-microbe continuum system respond to the spontaneous secondary succession of degraded alpine grasslands. Therefore, we investigated the spontaneous secondary successional recovery of grasslands disturbed by zokor (Myospalax fontanierii) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China, via a strategy of substituting space for time. Based on plant richness, biomass, and coverage, plant importance value was employed to assess the recovery degree of zokor-made mounds (ZMMs, large and bare patch areas constructed by zokors). Multiple statistical methods, including stoichiometric homeostatic model, network, and redundancy analysis, were conducted to decipher the stoichiometric patterns. The results indicated that plant C, C:N, and C:P increased with the recovery of ZMMs, contrary to the decrease of plant N and P. In addition, soil C, N, C:N, C:P, and N:P increased with the recovery degree, and the soil became relatively more N rich by increasing organic N under the revegetation of legumes. Meanwhile, soil microbial biomass C, N, and P increased with the recovery of ZMMs, but microbial biomass C:N:P ratios were highly constrained. Soil accessible inorganic nitrogen played an important role in driving plant and microbial nutrient and stoichiometry. Our results demonstrated that the different responses of C, N, and P contents in plant-soil-microbe lead to shifts in C:N:P stoichiometric ratio. Nevertheless, plants and soil microbes exhibited strong stoichiometric homeostasis. Collectively, our study provides new insight into biogeochemical responses to the successional recovery of degraded alpine grassland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from a stoichiometric perspective.

Revisiting the growth rate hypothesis: Towards a holistic stoichiometric understanding of growth

The growth rate hypothesis (GRH) posits that variation in organismal stoichiometry (C:P and N:P ratios) is driven by growth-dependent allocation of P to ribosomal RNA. The GRH has found broad but not uniform support in studies across diverse biota and habitats. We synthesise information on how and why the tripartite growth-RNA-P relationship predicted by the GRH may be uncoupled and outline paths for both theoretical and empirical work needed to broaden the working domain of the GRH. We found strong support for growth to RNA (r²  = 0.59) and RNA-P to P (r²  = 0.63) relationships across taxa, but growth to P relationships were relatively weaker (r²  = 0.09). Together, the GRH was supported in ~50% of studies. Mechanisms behind GRH uncoupling were diverse but could generally be attributed to physiological (P accumulation in non-RNA pools, inactive ribosomes, translation elongation rates and protein turnover rates), ecological (limitation by resources other than P), and evolutionary (adaptation to different nutrient supply regimes) causes. These factors should be accounted for in empirical tests of the GRH and formalised mathematically to facilitate a predictive understanding of growth.

Plant Growth and Nutrient Composition of Shrub and Arbor Willows Grown in Cu-Contaminated Flooded Soil

Flooding can adversely worsen metal-contaminated soil and influence phytoremediation efficiency; thus, it is crucial to explore the eco-physiological responses of plants to the combined stress of metals and flooding. Here, the plant growth, photosynthesis, and nutrient composition in the arbor willow (Salix jiangsuensis ‘J172’) and shrub willow (Salix integra ‘Yizhibi’) were studied using a pot experiment with Cu-contaminated soil (239.5 mg·kg−1) under flooded versus non-flooded conditions. S. integra showed a larger bioconcentration factor (BCF) than S. jiangsuensis in both treatments. Flooding markedly decreased the BCFs while obviously increasing the translocation factor in the two willows (p< 0.05). Flooding enhanced the leaf C:P and N:P ratios while significantly decreased root C:P and N:P ratios, compared to the non-flooded condition. The shrub willow exhibited better tolerance to flooding, with little alteration in biomass and photosynthetic rate, and showed greater potential Cu accumulation capacity, even though its total biomass was significantly lower than that of the arbor willow. Our study also helps further understanding of nutrient balance and stoichiometry of willows in response to flooding and Cu contamination, promoting the management of Cu-contaminated flooded soils.

Water deficit modifies C:N:P stoichiometry affecting sugarcane and energy cane yield and its relationships with silicon supply

Climate change has increased the occurrence of water deficit in regions where sugarcane and energy cane are cultivated, jeopardizing dry matter production of stems. It was hypothesized that the reasons behind this fact relate to C:N:P stoichiometric modifications in these species that impair the conversion rates of accumulated nutrients in the stems, which could be attenuated by supplying silicon (Si) to the crops. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of water deficit in sugarcane and energy cane ratoons in the presence and absence of Si, in the C:N:P stoichiometry of stems, in the use efficiency of these nutrients and in the accumulation of dry matter in stems. Two experiments were carried out, using sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and energy cane (S. spontaneum), cultivated in pots filled with a Typic Quartzipisamment. The treatments for both experiments were arranged in a factorial scheme 2 × 2, without (70% of the soil’s water retention capacity) and with (30% of the capacity) water deficit, without and with the application of Si via fertirrigation, associated with foliar pulverization, both at a concentration of 2.5 mmol L⁻¹, arranged in randomized blocks. The reduction in dry matter production of stems in both species caused by water deficit was due to modifications of the C, N and P stoichiometric homeostasis, but the benefit of Si in these plants when increasing dry matter production was not a reflection of the change in homeostasis, thus it may be involved in other mechanisms that remain unknown and should be further studied.

Effect of Environmental Stress on the Nutrient Stoichiometry of the Clonal Plant Phragmites australis in Inland Riparian Wetlands of Northwest China

Clonal plants play an important role in determining ecosystem properties such as community stability, species diversity and nutrient cycling. However, relatively little information is available about the stoichiometric characteristics of clonal plants and their drivers in inland riparian wetlands under strong environmental stress. In this manuscript, we studied the clonal plant Phragmites australis in an inland riparian wetland of Northwest China and compared its nutrient distribution and stoichiometry trade-offs as well as its responses to soil environmental factors in three different environments, namely, a wetland, a salt marsh, and a desert. We found that (1) P. australis could adapt to heterogeneous environments by changing its nutrient allocation strategies, as evidenced by the significant decrease in N and P concentrations, and significant increase in whole-plant C:P and N:P ratios from the wetland to the desert habitats. (2) P. australis adapted to stressful environments by changing its nutrient allocation patterns among different modules, showing a greater tendency to invest N and P in underground modules (rhizomes and roots) and an increase in the utilization efficiency of N and P in the leaves, and stems as environmental stress increased. (3) The C-N, C-P, and N:P-C in the whole plant and in each module showed significant anisotropic growth relationships in the three habitats (P < 0.05). (4) Soil water, pH and salt were the main factors limiting nutrient stoichiometry. The results of this study clarified the ecological adaptation mechanism of the clonal plant P. australis to heterogeneous environments and provided targeted protection strategies for inland riparian wetlands in Northwest China.

Effect of phosphorus efficiency on elemental stoichiometry of two shrubs

Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient that can restrict plant growth. However, the influence of P deficiency on elemental homeostasis and application of the growth rate hypothesis in higher plants remain to be assessed. Two shrubs, Zygophyllum xanthoxylum and Nitraria tangutorum, were used as experiment material and subjected to five P addition treatments: 0, 17.5, 35.0, 52.5 and 70.0 mg P·kg^-1 soil. The biomass and relative growth rate of Z. xanthoxylum did not change with altered P supply. There was no significant difference in P concentration among the treatments for Z. xanthoxylum, but N. tangutorum showed an upward trend. The P stoichiometric homeostasis of Z. xanthoxylum was higher than that of N. tangutorum. For Z. xanthoxylum, available P in the rhizosphere improved significantly under extreme P deficiency conditions, and P concentrations in all treatments were lower than in N. tangutorum, showing that Z. xanthoxylum had stronger P absorption and P utilization capacity. No relationships between growth rate and C:N:P ratios were found in Z. xanthoxylum. The strong P efficiency, and high and stable dry matter accumulation, are likely contributors in maintaining stoichiometric homeostasis. In addition, the relatively high biomass accumulation and high P utilization efficiency for Z. xanthoxylum does not support the growth rate hypothesis for this species.

Interactive Effects of Rising Temperature and Nutrient Enrichment on Aquatic Plant Growth, Stoichiometry, and Palatability

The abundance and stoichiometry of aquatic plants are crucial for nutrient cycling and energy transfer in aquatic ecosystems. However, the interactive effects of multiple global environmental changes, including temperature rise and eutrophication, on aquatic plant stoichiometry and palatability remain largely unknown. Here, we hypothesized that (1) plant growth rates increase faster with rising temperature in nutrient-rich than nutrient-poor sediments; (2) plant carbon (C): nutrient ratios [nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)] respond differently to rising temperatures at contrasting nutrient conditions of the sediment; (3) external nutrient loading to the water column limits the growth of plants and decreases plant C:nutrient ratios; and that (4) changes in plant stoichiometry affect plant palatability. We used the common rooted submerged plant Vallisneria spiralis as a model species to test the effects of temperature and nutrient availability in both the sediment and the water column on plant growth and stoichiometry in a full-factorial experiment. The results confirmed that plants grew faster in nutrient-rich than nutrient-poor sediments with rising temperature, whereas external nutrient loading decreased the growth of plants due to competition by algae. The plant C: N and C: P ratios responded differently at different nutrient conditions to rising temperature. Rising temperature increased the metabolic rates of organisms, increased the nutrient availability in the sediment and enhanced plant growth. Plant growth was limited by a shortage of N in the nutrient-poor sediment and in the treatment with external nutrient loading to the water column, as a consequence, the limited plant growth caused an accumulation of P in the plants. Therefore, the effects of temperature on aquatic plant C:nutrient ratios did not only depend on the availability of the specific nutrients in the environment, but also on plant growth, which could result in either increased, unaltered or decreased plant C:nutrient ratios in response to temperature rise. Plant feeding trial assays with the generalist consumer Lymnaea stagnalis (Gastropoda) did not show effects of temperature or nutrient treatments on plant consumption rates. Overall, our results implicate that warming and eutrophication might interactively affect plant abundance and plant stoichiometry, and therefore influence nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems.
