Abstract
Ginger, as a globally vital medicinal and food homologous crop, plays an irreplaceable role in human diet and healthcare. However, during the storage of ginger, the decline of physical properties and degradation of volatile flavor quality have emerged as an industrial concern that severely restricts the market value of the product. MeJA plays an essential role in extending fruit shelf life and regulate the synthesis of volatiles in horticultural products, yet its application in ginger remains unreported. This study investigated whether MeJA could delay the deterioration of external quality and the loss of volatile compounds, thereby maintaining the flavor quality of ginger during storage. The results demonstrated that MeJA retarded weight loss, moisture reduction, texture softening, and color darkening in ginger rhizomes during storage. In addition, dynamic profiles of volatile compounds in the postharvest stage of ginger rhizomes were characterized via HS-SPME/GC-MS methodology. A total of 67 volatile components were identified and quantified precisely, which were divided into terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and others. Terpenes represented by zingiberene, farnesene, β-sesquiphellandrene, α-curcumene, (E)-β-farnesene, and β-elemene, was the most abundant classification of compounds in ginger, comprising approximately 70 % of the total content. Compared with the control group, MeJA reduced the loss rate of total quantity and total content of volatiles, while effectively slowed the loss of various volatiles, especially after 35d of storage. Furthermore, 30 characteristic components with an odor activity values (OAVs) ≥ 1 were identified, predominantly exhibiting spicy, green, floral, fatty, and fruity fragrances. It is noteworthy that the most prominent scent of ginger is the spicy aroma, which can be significantly up-regulated by MeJA. Moreover, MeJA treatment was found to enhance the expression levels of terpene-related genes in ginger. This study clarified the patterns of variation in physical properties, volatile compounds, and aroma intensity during the storage of ginger, providing a theoretical basis for mitigating the deterioration of flavor quality in ginger rhizomes during postharvest storage. This research holds significant importance for promoting the comprehensive utilization and high-quality development of ginger.

Abstract
Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an important phytohormone that regulates the development of grape, but the effect and underpin mechanism of its preharvest application on secondary metabolites accumulation in postharvest grape berries are still unclear. In this study, the transcriptome profiles combined with metabolic components analysis were used to determine the effect of preharvest MeJA application on the quality formation of postharvest rose-flavor table grape Shine Muscat. The results indicated that preharvest MeJA treatment had no significant effect on TSS content, but had a down-regulation effect on the accumulation of reducing sugar and titratable acid in the berries. The content of chlorophylls and carotenoids in treated berries was significantly higher than that of the control. Many phenolic components, such as trans-ferulic acid, resveratrol, quercetin, and kaempferol, were sensitive to MeJA and their contents were also significantly higher than that of the control under MeJA treatments during the shelf life. Compared with other volatile aroma components, terpenoid components were more sensitive to preharvest MeJA signals, the content of which presented an overall upward trend with increasing MeJA concentration and prolonging storage time. Furthermore, most of the differentially expressed genes in the general phenylpropanoid pathway and terpenoid biosynthesis pathway were up-regulated responding to MeJA signals. The most upregulated regulatory factors, such as VvWRKY72, VvMYB24, and VvWRI1, may be involved in MeJA signal transduction and regulation. Preharvest MeJA may be an effective technique for enhancing the quality of postharvest Shine Muscat grape berries, with its positive effect on enhancing the characteristic aroma and nutritional components.

Abstract
The present study is aimed at determining whether leaf volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are good markers of the grapevine response to defence elicitors in the field. It was carried out in two distinct French vineyards (Burgundy and Bordeaux) over 3 years. The commercial elicitor Bastid® (Syngenta, Saint-Sauveur, France) (COS-OGA) was first used to optimise the VOCs' capture in the field; by bagging stems together with a stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) sensor. Three elicitors (Bastid®, copper sulphate and methyl jasmonate) were assessed at three phenological stages of the grapevines by monitoring stilbene phytoalexins and VOCs. Stilbene production was low and variable between treatments and phenological stages. VOCs-particularly terpenes-were induced by all elicitors. However, the response profiles depended on the type of elicitor, the phenological stage and the vineyard, and no sole common VOC was found. The levels of VOC emissions discriminated between weak (Bastid® and copper sulphate) and strong (methyl jasmonate) inducers. Ocimene isomers were constitutively present in the overall blends of the vineyards and increased by the elicitors' treatments, whilst other VOCs were newly released throughout the growing seasons. Nonetheless, the plant development and climate factors undoubtedly influenced the release and profiles of the leaf VOCs.

Abstract
Medicinal plants have been used to cure human diseases since decades. Silybum marianum, a medicinal plant, is regarded as a source of secondary metabolites with therapeutic value against liver diseases and diabetes. The present study was conducted to enrich the production of secondary metabolites in the vegetative parts of Silybum marianum using elicitation strategy in hydroponic system with different elicitors. The elicitors of fungus Aspergillus niger (0.2 g/L), methyl jasmonate (MeJA) (100 μM) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (1 ppm) were added in hydroponic medium, individually and in combination form to the 15 days old plant. The elicitor-treated plants were harvested at different time points (24-144 h; increment 24 h) and their biochemical parameters like phenolics, flavonoids, nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were analyzed. The results showed hyper-accumulation of these biochemical contents, especially in response to MeJA (100 μM), followed by AgNPs (1 ppm) and co-treatment of AgNPs (1 ppm) with other elicitors. The results revealed that the treatment with MeJA (100 μM) exhibited the highest flavonoid (304 μg g-1), phenolic (372 μg g-1), and SOD (16.2 U g-1) contents. For NO levels, the maximum value of 198.6 nmole g-1 was achieved in response to the treatment with MeJA + Green synthesized AgNPs (100 μM + 1 ppm). Our findings depicted an enhanced production of medicinally important plant secondary metabolites and antioxidants; hence, the method applied in this study can play a significant role to improve therapeutic values of the plants.

Abstract
The use of organic substances in integrated pest management can contribute to human- and environment-safe crop production. In the present work, a combination of organic biostimulants (Fullcrhum Alert and BioVeg 500) and an inorganic corroborant (Clinogold, zeolite) was tested for the effects on the plant response to the quarantine pest tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV). Biostimulants were applied to healthy and infected greenhouse-grown zucchini plants, and the vegetative parameters and viral titer were evaluated. Although no antiviral effects were observed in terms of both virus replication and symptom expression, these biostimulants were shown to influence plant fitness. A significant increase in biomass and in leaf, flower, and fruit production was induced in both healthy and infected plants. Biostimulants also enhanced the production of metabolites commonly involved in plant response to virus infection, such as carbohydrates, phenylpropanoids and free amino acids. These results encourage new field trials to evaluate the actual productivity of infected plants after treatments and the possible application of organic biostimulants in agriculture.

Abstract
Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA) regulate the production of biologically active compounds in plants and stimulate the accumulation of plant aromatic substances. However, the underlying mechanisms of how MeJA and SA influence characteristic flavor compounds and the antioxidant activity of vegetables are poorly understood. Five MeJA and SA concentrations were used to investigate the dose-dependent effects of these phytohormones on the dry and fresh weight; chlorophyll abundance; the contents of vitamin C, soluble protein, and sugar, nitrate, total phenols, flavonoids, volatile components, and enzymatically produced pyruvic acid; and antioxidant activity in Chinese chive. We found that MeJA and SA at concentrations of 500 and 150 μM, respectively, significantly increased the levels of total chlorophyll, phenols and flavonoids, vitamin C, and volatile components and significantly reduced the accumulation of nitrate. In addition, compared with the control, 500 μM of MeJA significantly increased the soluble sugar and protein content, and 150 μM SA significantly increased the dry and fresh weight of Chinese chive. Furthermore, these concentrations of MeJA and SA significantly increased the enzymatic pyruvate content and the amount of sulfide and aromatic volatile compounds and improved the characteristic flavor compounds. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity, and ferric-reducing antioxidant capacity were significantly improved after a preharvest treatment with 500 μM MeJA and 150 μM SA, which could improve the antioxidant activity, thus improving the postharvest quality and preservation characteristics of Chinese chives. Taken together, a preharvest treatment with 500 μM MeJA and 150 μM SA is optimal to improve the growth, quality, antioxidant activity, and flavor of Chinese chive, thereby enhancing its commercial value.

Abstract
Stilbenes are phytoalexins with health-promoting benefits for humans. Here, we boost stilbenes' production, and in particular the resveratrol dehydrodimer viniferin, with significant pharmacological properties, by overexpressing stilbene synthase (STS) under unlimited phenylalanine (Phe) supply. Vitis vinifera cell cultures were co-transformed with a feedback-insensitive E. coli DAHP synthase (AroG*) and STS genes, under constitutive promoters. All transgenic lines had increased levels of Phe and stilbenes (74-fold higher viniferin reaching 0.74 mg/g DW). External Phe feeding of AroG* + STS lines caused a synergistic effect on resveratrol and viniferin accumulation, achieving a 26-fold (1.33 mg/g DW) increase in resveratrol and a 620-fold increase (6.2 mg/g DW) in viniferin, which to date is the highest viniferin accumulation reported in plant cultures. We suggest that this strategy of combining higher Phe availability and STS expression generates grape cell cultures as potential factories for sustainable production of stilbenes with a minor effect on the levels of flavonoids.

Abstract
The in vitro cell cultures derived from the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) have been used for the production of stilbenes treated with different biotic and abiotic elicitors. The red-grape cultivar Váh has been elicited by natural cellulose from Trichoderma viride, the cell wall homogenate from Fusarium oxysporum and synthetic jasmonates. The sodium-orthovanadate, known as an inhibitor of hypersensitive necrotic response in treated plant cells able to enhance production and release of secondary metabolite into the cultivation medium, was used as an abiotic elicitor. Growth of cells and the content of phenolic compounds trans-resveratrol, trans-piceid, δ-viniferin, and ɛ-viniferin, were analyzed in grapevine cells treated by individual elicitors. The highest accumulation of analyzed individual stilbenes, except of trans-piceid has been observed after treatment with the cell wall homogenate from F. oxysporum. Maximum production of trans-resveratrol, δ- and ɛ-viniferins was triggered by treatment with cellulase from T. viride. The accumulation of trans-piceid in cell cultures elicited by this cellulase revealed exactly the opposite effect, with almost three times higher production of trans-resveratrol than that of trans-piceid. This study suggested that both used fungal elicitors can enhance production more effectively than commonly used jasmonates.

Abstract
Stilbenes are a small family of polyphenolic secondary metabolites that can be found in several distantly related plant species. These compounds act as phytoalexins, playing a crucial role in plant defense against phytopathogens, as well as being involved in the adaptation of plants to abiotic environmental factors. Among stilbenes, trans-resveratrol is certainly the most popular and extensively studied for its health properties. In recent years, an increasing number of stilbene compounds were subjected to investigations concerning their bioactivity. This review presents the most updated knowledge of the stilbene biosynthetic pathway, also focusing on the role of several environmental factors in eliciting stilbenes biosynthesis. The effects of ultraviolet radiation, visible light, ultrasonication, mechanical stress, salt stress, drought, temperature, ozone, and biotic stress are reviewed in the context of enhancing stilbene biosynthesis, both in planta and in plant cell and organ cultures. This knowledge may shed some light on stilbene biological roles and represents a useful tool to increase the accumulation of these valuable compounds.

Abstract
Covering: 1976 to 2020. Although constituting a limited chemical family, phytostilbenes represent an emblematic group of molecules among natural compounds. Ever since their discovery as antifungal compounds in plants and their ascribed role in human health and disease, phytostilbenes have never ceased to arouse interest for researchers, leading to a huge development of the literature in this field. Owing to this, the number of references to this class of compounds has reached the tens of thousands. The objective of this article is thus to offer an overview of the different aspects of these compounds through a large bibliography analysis of more than 500 articles. All the aspects regarding phytostilbenes will be covered including their chemistry and biochemistry, regulation of their biosynthesis, biological activities in plants, molecular engineering of stilbene pathways in plants and microbes as well as their biotechnological production by plant cell systems.

Abstract
Plants encounter diverse stressors simultaneously with changing environmental factors. The combined effect of different types of stresses can have a wide range of effects on plants. The present study demonstrated that various stress factors such as the combination of chemical elicitors, namely paraquat (PQ), methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD), light exposure versus darkness, and mechanical shearing stress affected the defence response in peanut hairy root culture. The antioxidant activities were dramatically increased at all time points after hairy roots were subjected to elicitation with PQ + MeJA + CD under root cutting in both light and dark conditions. The stilbene compounds were highly increased in the culture medium after elicitor treatment of uncut hairy roots under dark conditions. In contrast to the high stilbene contents detected in culture medium under dark conditions, the transcription of the stilbene biosynthesis genes PAL, RS and RS3 was enhanced by the effect of light in uncut hairy root tissues. The antioxidant enzyme genes APX, GPX and CuZn-SOD of uncut and cut hairy roots were more highly expressed in light conditions than in dark conditions. The pathogenesis-related protein (PR)-encoding genes chitinase, PR4A, PR5 and PR10 of uncut hairy roots were highly expressed in response to light conditions compared to dark conditions at all time points. Recent evidence of the production of antioxidant stilbene compounds and defence response genes has implicated plant protective functions through defence responses under different stress challenges. Plant responses might therefore be regulated by the coordination of different signal responses through dynamic pathways.

Abstract
Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an airborne signaling phytohormone that can induce changes in endogenous jasmonates (JAs) and cause photosynthetic responses. However, the response of these two aspects of citrus plants at different MeJA concentrations is still unclear. Four MeJA concentrations were used in two citrus varieties, Huangguogan (C. reticulata × C. sinensis) and Shiranuhi [C. reticulata × (C. reticulata × C. sinensis)], to investigate the effects of MeJA dose on the endogenous JAs pathway and photosynthetic capacity. We observed that MeJA acted in a dose-dependent manner, and its stimulation in citrus leaves showed a bidirectional character at different concentrations. This work demonstrates that MeJA at only a concentration of 2.2 mM or less contributed to the activation of magnesium protoporphyrin IX methyltransferase (ChlM, EC 2.1.1.11) and protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR, EC 1.3.1.11) and the simultaneous accumulation of Chl a and Chl b, which in turn contributed to an improved photosynthetic capacity and PSII photochemistry efficiency of citrus. Meanwhile, the inhibition of endogenous JAs synthesis by exogenous MeJA was observed. This was achieved by reducing the ratio of monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) to diagalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG) and inhibiting the activities of key enzymes in JAs synthesis, especially 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid reductase (OPR, EC 1.3.1.42). Another noteworthy finding is that there may exist a JA-independent pathway that could regulate 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (OPDA) synthesis. This study jointly analyzed the internal hormone regulation mechanism and the external physiological response, as well as revealed the effects of exogenous MeJA on promoting the photosynthesis and inhibiting the endogenous JAs synthesis.

Abstract
The objective of the present work was to synthesize biopolymeric nanoparticles (NPs) entrapping the resistance-inductor methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to be employed as a novel and alternative strategy in integrated pest management. NPs were prepared by using a continuous flow microfluidic reactor that allows to precisely control some features that are crucial for applications such as size, polydispersion, morphology and reproducibility. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), a biopolymer largely studied for its use in biological applications, was chosen for the production of NPs entrapping MeJA, a biotic endogenous elicitor able to trigger plant’s defense responses. The effect of different fluid-dynamic conditions, PLGA molecular weight and concentration on NP properties (dimensions, polydispersion, morphology, stability) was evaluated. DLS and SEM were employed to characterize the obtained NPs. MeJA-loaded PLGA NPs ranging from 40 to 70 nm were administered to Vitis vinifera cell cultures, in order to evaluate the biological response in terms of stilbene biosynthesis. HPLC investigations showed a faster response when the elicitor was administered by PLGA NPs in comparison with free MeJA. This result demonstrates that the encapsulation in PLGA NPs significantly promotes MeJA cell uptake and the activation of MeJA-induced responses.

Abstract
The phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) is a secondary metabolite that regulates plant growth, development and responses to stress. However, the role of SA in the biosynthesis of flavonoids (a large class of secondary metabolites) in tea (Camellia sinensis L.) remains largely unknown. Here, we show that exogenous methyl salicylate (MeSA, the methyl ester of SA) increased flavonoid concentration in tea leaves in a dose-dependent manner. While a moderate concentration of MeSA (1 mM) resulted in the highest increase in flavonoid concentration, a high concentration of MeSA (5 mM) decreased flavonoid concentration in tea leaves. A time-course of flavonoid concentration following 1 mM MeSA application showed that flavonoid concentration peaked at 2 days after treatment and then gradually declined, reaching a concentration lower than that of control after 6 days. Consistent with the time course of flavonoid concentration, MeSA enhanced the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, a key enzyme for the biosynthesis of flavonoids) as early as 12 h after the treatment, which peaked after 1 day and then gradually declined upto 6 days. qRT-PCR analysis of the genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis revealed that exogenous MeSA upregulated the expression of genes such as CsPAL, CsC4H, Cs4CL, CsCHS, CsCHI, CsF3H, CsDFR, CsANS and CsUFGT in tea leaves. These results suggest a role for MeSA in modulating the flavonoid biosynthesis in green tea leaves, which might have potential implications in manipulating the tea quality and stress tolerance in tea plants.
