Abstract
Objective In this pilot study, we evaluated the acceptability and preliminary evidence of the impact of a new educational mobile application, "Teach Ted", for children undergoing blood tests. Methods Parents of children (4-10 years) completed questionnaires on anxiety and pain before their child had a blood test, and after using Teach Ted and receiving their blood test. Health professionals at each patient's blood test (e.g. technician/nurse) completed questionnaires on patient outcomes and procedure-related outcomes (e.g. time taken). Results Nine parents and eight health professionals participated. All but one parent (n = 8/9) reported Teach Ted was useful. Seventy-eight percent (n = 7/9) reported they would use Teach Ted again. All health professionals who completed the acceptability measure (n = 3/3) strongly agreed that Teach Ted was relevant/helpful. Many parents perceived Teach Ted helped reduce their/child's anxiety (n = 3/5, 60% and n = 4/6, 67% respectively), although child's pain and child's/parent's anxiety remained similar before and after using Teach Ted (all p > 0.05). The average blood test duration was 7.6 min (range ≤1 to 22), which health professionals (n = 3/3) reported was not elongated by offering Teach Ted. Conclusions Participants reported that Teach Ted was acceptable. Further evaluation of Teach Ted's impact on patient's outcomes are needed. Innovation Teach Ted is an innovative mobile application with potential to educate young children about their upcoming procedure and mitigate negative outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe experiences of fear, coping, and support in 10-17-year-old children under treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). METHODS A longitudinal descriptive qualitative design was adopted. Ten children participated in one to three interviews each (24 interviews in all). Interviews were analysed using a matrix-based qualitative method. RESULTS The variety of fears described related to uncertainty, pain and medical procedures, bodily changes and loss of control, complications, professionals' attitudes, affected school results, and social isolation. Children used various strategies to deal with fear: some more general, to cope with the whole situation, and others more related to specific events such as treatment and tests. The most reported strategies we labelled Accepting the situation, Positive thinking, and Being an active agent. Less favourable strategies were also reported. Health care professionals, families, and friends offered valuable, but different kinds of, support. CONCLUSIONS Children aged 10 to 17 undergoing treatment for ALL experience various fears. Each experience is individual and changes over time, but there are common patterns. Most children used problem-solving or emotional-regulation strategies, but withdrawal was also reported. Even children who can deal with fear need support from their health care professionals, families, and friends.

Abstract
Background "Patient-centered" care positions the patient at the core and emphasizes fulfilling their unique needs, preferences, and values. This approach is particularly significant in the context of children. Although widely recognized as necessary, this approach is not universally implemented. The children find themselves in hospital wards where they are required to follow protocols and systems designed primarily for adults. In the appropriate atmosphere, children often express themselves more effectively through words, body language, and play, leading to a richer understanding of their needs. There is growing recognition of the importance of addressing children's concerns regarding hospital environments. Aim This study investigates children's satisfaction with the physical aspect of the hospital environment. Insights from this exploration could provide valuable input for creating hospital environments centered around children's needs and preferences. Methods This mixed-methods study involves children aged 6-14 years with parental consent from a premiere healthcare provider in the state of Qatar. The survey used nine items to gauge satisfaction with the existing hospital environment as a "child-friendly hospital" and another nine items to explore their expectations for such environments. The Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests as well as thematic analyses were employed to assess the statistical significance of differences in satisfaction levels and children's expectations of the hospital's physical environment. Results A total of 398 children participated in the study. Of them, 40.3% were aged 6-8 years; 60.3% had experienced two to five hospital visits; 55.8% of children participated during their outpatient service visit; and 31.7% were Asian. Children's satisfaction levels with various aspects of the hospital environment-including its physical appearance, signage, lounge, consultant rooms, corridors, bedrooms, TV content, toys, and staff uniforms-were in the range of 42.9%-59%. The children expressed a desire for a hospital environment that is spacious, colorful, attractive, and filled with cartoon characters and toys in the children's hospital from the front lounge to the inpatient units. Conclusion The findings underline the importance of considering the perspectives of children in evidence-based healthcare design. The study reveals that children's satisfaction with the hospital environment is generally average or below average. Ultimately, a "child-friendly hospital environment" integrates children's rights into healthcare to significantly improve outcomes.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of the study was to describe the preparation of children for day surgery from the parent's viewpoint. DESIGN Empirical Research Mixed Method. METHODS The research applied a mixed-methods study design. The study was conducted at the Paediatric Day Surgical Department of one REDACTED between 2018 and 2020 at the same time as an associated randomised controlled conduct trial. Parents of 41 children (ages 2-6 years) completed measures assessing their preparation for day surgery and satisfaction with the procedure. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 parents to better understand their experiences. RESULTS According to the results, most of the parents (95%) told their children about the upcoming day surgery procedure. The child was prepared for the surgery with cognitive and sensory information, and the preparation usually started at home well before the surgery. The parents' experiences with the most critical aspects of preparing their child included three main categories: (1) usability of the preparation method; (2) content and timing of the preparation method and (3) consideration of the family perspective.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the acceptability of a novel device ('MyShield'): a device used for distraction during clinical procedures. It is a cardboard cuff, designed to fit around the arm, either above the elbow or around the wrist and used to hide the procedure from view. This device was tested in practice, to establish acceptability to children, parents and clinical staff. Fifty-eight children tried 'MyShield' during a venepuncture procedure. Feedback from 54 children, 58 parents/carers and 16 clinical staff was collected using surveys and interviews. In 24 cases, observational data were also collected. A large majority of children (94%, n = 51) and parents (96%, n = 56) reported a positive experience when using 'MyShield'; saying they would likely use it again. Potential of 'MyShield' in promoting parent/clinician interaction with the child was highlighted. Data suggests that 'MyShield' may be a useful device for children undergoing venepuncture, when used in conjunction with standard care, and subject to individual preferences and choice. Further work is required to establish mechanism of action and whether use of 'MyShield' has any impact across a range of short- and long-term outcome measures relating to patient experience and effectiveness.

Abstract
Invasive medical procedures in hospitals are major sources of stress in children, causing pain and fear. Non-pharmacological interventions are indispensable in effective pain and fear management. However, these interventions must be personalized to be effective. This qualitative study aims to gain insight into children's and parents' experiences, needs, and wishes related to supporting children to develop and express their coping preferences for dealing with pain and fear during minor invasive medical procedures in order to decrease pain and fear. A qualitative study using thematic analysis was performed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with children and parents who had undergone at least five minor invasive medical procedures in the last year. Nineteen children (8-18 years) and fourteen parents were interviewed individually. The experiences, needs, and wishes expressed in the interviews could be classified into one overarching theme, that of the personal process, and two content-related sub-themes: feeling trust and gaining control. The personal process was divided into two different phases, that of developing and of expressing coping preferences. Children and parents both reported it as a continuous process, different for every child, with their own unique needs. Children and parents expected personalized attention and tailored support from professionals. Conclusion: Professionals must combine clinical skills with child-tailored care. In the process of searching for and communicating about coping preferences, children's unique needs and personal boundaries will thereby be respected. This gives children and parents increased trust and control during invasive medical procedures. What is Known: • Untreated pain and stress caused by medical procedures can have severe and important short- and long-term consequences for children. Personalized non-pharmacological interventions are an essential element of procedural pain management. What is New: • A personalized coping strategy is important for children when undergoing medical procedures. Each individual child has a personal way of expressing their own coping strategy. Children and their parents need information and the space to develop and express their individual coping preferences. • Children and parents expect to receive child-tailored care from professionals including respect for their own, unique needs and boundaries. Professionals should build trustful relationships and provide appropriately tailored autonomy around medical procedures.

Abstract
PURPOSE The manuscript aims to characterize the principles of best practice in performing nuclear medicine procedures in paediatric patients. The paper describes all necessary technical skills that should be developed by the healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible care in paediatric patients, as it is particularly challenging due to psychological and physical conditions of children. METHODS We performed a comprehensive literature review to establish the most relevant elements of nuclear medicine studies in paediatric patients. We focused the attention to the technical aspects of the study, such as patient preparation, imaging protocols, and immobilization techniques, that adhere to best practice principles. Furthermore, we considered the psychological elements of working with children, including comforting and distraction strategies. RESULTS The extensive literature review combined with practical conclusions and recommendations presented and explained by the authors summarizes the most important principles of the care for paediatric patient in the nuclear medicine field. CONCLUSION Nuclear medicine applied to the paediatric patient is a very special and challenging area, requiring proper education and experience in order to be performed at the highest level and with the maximum safety for the child.

Abstract
(1) Aim: The aim of the study was to develop and analyze the psychometric properties of a hospital perception scale for healthy children aged 8 to 10 years. (2) Methods: A methodological design was employed. The scale's validity was investigated using the approaches of content validity, face validity, item analysis, and construct validity. The scale's reliability was evaluated utilizing the approaches of internal consistency reliability, measurer reliability, and measurement invariance. (3) Results: In total, 330 children took part in this study. The scale is composed of six factors. Factor loads range from 0.42 to 0.79. The item-total score correlation coefficients were 0.42 and 0.79, respectively, while the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was 0.87. (4) Conclusions: The HPSHC is a valid and reliable tool. It can be used to determine how healthy or sick children in their middle childhood are perceived when going to the hospital and being hospitalized.

Abstract
PURPOSES This study aimed to explore children's perceptions and experiences of receiving intravenous (IV) injections and the self-reported pain scores and management strategies that can support children while receiving IV injections. DESIGN AND METHODS This mixed-methods study included 17 children aged 4-11 years who presented to the outpatient clinic of a pediatric hospital and received IV injections. Data were collected using the draw, write, and tell method (DWT) and Facial Pain Rating Scale. Descriptive statistics and content analyses were performed. RESULTS The children's self-reported mean pain score was 4.82, indicating moderate pain. Many expressions indicated that IV injections were painful or caused tingling or stinging sensations. A vague fear of needles in addition to pain was identified after listening to the children and analyzing their own interpretation of drawings. Three main themes were identified: (1) physical and emotional experiences, (2) parents as my secure base, and (3) comfort and relief strategies. CONCLUSIONS Children expressed their experiences during IV injections, the alleviation of their pain and fear, and their suggestions for comfort and relief strategies visually, auditorily, and verbally. Parents played an important role in supporting their children and reducing pain, anxiety, and distress related to the IV procedure. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The DWT, as an arts-based and child-centered approach, is a useful and valid method to understand children's experience related to the IV injection. Children experience comfort and relief within a family-centered care context during IV injection. Nurses should promote children's and parents' participation in the development of strategies to reduce the negative effects of IV injections in children.

Abstract
To examine whether children experience less fear or pain using a child-centered intervention and if there were differences between the intervention group and the control group regarding heart rate, time required for the procedure, success rate for the cannula insertion, and patient satisfaction. A controlled single-center case study of observational design, with one control and one intervention group. Child self-reported fear or pain levels did not reveal any differences for those receiving the intervention compared with controls. However, according to a behavioral observation measure with the Procedure Behavior Check List, effects of the intervention were lower distress in relation to fear and pain during the cannula insertion. The time it took to perform the cannula insertion also decreased significantly in the intervention group. More children in the intervention group reported that they were satisfied with the needle procedure compared with the children in the control group. The child-centered intervention provides reduced observed distress related to fear and pain in children undergoing a cannula insertion and reduced total time by more than 50%. This study found that child involvement in care strengthen their ability to manage a needle procedure.

Abstract
Virtual reality has proven to be an effective approach to decrease pain in acute settings, both in adults and children. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether virtual reality (VR) could reduce pain during an intrathecal pump refill procedure in children receiving intrathecal drug delivery, compared to a standard refill procedure. This is a three-arm crossover randomized controlled trial, evaluating the effect of VR on pain in children with cerebral palsy undergoing an intrathecal pump refill compared to a standard refill and a refill with distraction (watching a video). Pain was evaluated using the Wong–Baker Faces Scale. Secondary outcomes were procedural pain, fear, state anxiety, the incidence of adverse events and satisfaction. Six children participated in this study, whereby all children underwent the three conditions. Five children indicated an equal of lower pain score during VR, compared to a standard refill. This finding of an equal or lower pain intensity score for the VR condition compared to the control condition was also revealed by the ratings of the parents, physician and the researcher. The influence of VR on anxiety and fear seem to be in line with the influence of watching a video. In terms of satisfaction, all children and parents agreed with the statement that they would like to use VR again for a next refill. Due to the lack of adverse events, the high degree of satisfaction of children with VR and the decreased pain levels after a refill with VR, physicians may aim to explore the implementation of VR during intrathecal pump refill procedures in children in a daily clinical routine care setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explores children's expressions of emotional cues and concerns during needle procedures, nurses' responses and findings in relation to children's age and sex. METHODS Twenty-six children aged 6-12 years were video recorded during a preoperative needle procedure. Emotional communication was analyzed using Verona Coding Definitions of Emotional Sequences. RESULTS A total of 111 cues or concerns were identified in the observed needle procedures, with a distribution of 77 cues and 34 concerns. A majority of children (85%) expressed emotional cues through non-verbal communication. No differences between child age or sex related to expressed emotion were found. The child elicited the communicated emotion in 98% of sequences. Nurses' responses were coded as not providing space for communication in 75% of sequences. CONCLUSION Children are capable of expressing their emotional distress, primarily non-verbally, during needle procedures. A child showing less overt expressions during a needle procedure does not necessarily experience less fear or pain. The nurses' communication focused on practical information during the needle procedure, with less attention to the child's distress. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nurses need to develop strategies to be aware of emotions the child communicates before, during and after a needle procedure.

Abstract
Aim To assess experiences of morally distressing situations and perceptions of ethical climate in paediatric oncology care, with a focus on situations that involve children's voices. Design Cross‐sectional survey. Methods Registered Nurses at all four paediatric oncology centres in Denmark were asked to complete a web‐based questionnaire with Danish translations of the Swedish Moral Distress Scale‐Revised (MDS‐R) and the Swedish Hospital Ethical Climate Survey‐Shortened (HECS‐S). Data analysis included descriptive statistics and non‐parametric correlation tests. Results Nurses (n = 65) perceived morally distressing situations as rather uncommon, except for those that involved shortage of time, poor continuity of care and unsafe staffing levels. Most nurses (83%) found it disturbing to perform procedures on school‐aged children against their will, and 20% reported that they do this often. Perceptions of ethical climate were positive and healthcare professionals were perceived to be attentive to children's wishes.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVES To describe young children's experiences of valuable support in managing their fears about treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The focus was specifically on support from parents and healthcare professionals. DESIGN The study had a qualitative descriptive longitudinal design. METHODS The study analysed 35 interviews with 13 children at three different times during their treatment period. Data were analysed using a matrix-based method. The Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) guidelines have been followed. RESULTS Parents and healthcare professionals provide important support to children undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, although their roles differ. Children valued their parents' closeness and advocacy, being able to participate in their own care, and being given pain relief during procedures known to create pain. Valued support from healthcare professionals changed over time, from providing information and showing the tools that would be used in procedures, to paying attention to the child's needs and desires. It was more important for children to be able to choose between different alternatives in medical procedures than deciding on major treatment issues.

Abstract
PURPOSE For many children, needle procedures are fearful events that are often painful. The first step in symptom management is to assess the child's pain and fear, and the next step is to use coping strategies to provide symptom relief for children who experience or feel pain and fear during procedures. The Children's Action-Reaction Assessment Tool (CARAT) is built on action-reaction strategies. This study aimed to determine the inter-rater reliability of the CARAT when used during needle procedures with 3- to 7-year-old children. DESIGN AND METHODS: We used a quantitative approach in which 21 children were observed by two independent observers during needle procedures to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of the CARAT. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics, and the observation scores were calculated with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) test on SPSS for Windows, version 25. RESULTS The completed CARAT indicated the use of action-reaction strategies. Neither action nor reaction strategies were frequently used. The parents were seldom involved in the procedure. The inter-rater reliability showed a sufficient correlation between the observers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This study showed promising results for the inter-rater reliability of the CARAT, which can be used to facilitate care for children. The observational tool can be used to assess the use of action-reaction strategies in conjunction with needle procedures in children aged 3-7 years.

Abstract
Today, there is a shift towards care being given closer to the patient, with more children receiving care in their homes. Care at home has proven to be a viable alternative to hospital care, as shown by a project for hospital-based home care conducted in West Sweden. The aim of this study was to describe how children with cancer and parents experienced receiving care at home. After purposive sampling, six children with cancer aged 6–16 and eight parents participated. Semistructured interviews were performed, and the data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Four main categories emerged: save time and energy in the family; maintain everyday life; feel trust in the healthcare professionals; mixed feelings about getting treatment at home. This hospital-based home care project created good conditions for both children with cancer and their parents to feel secure. In addition, home care can be very child-centric, whereby the caregivers involve the children by taking their thoughts and utterances into account.

Abstract
Background In 2020, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) became law in Sweden. This puts extra demands on Swedish health care for children in need. This study aimed to investigate children's experiences and paediatric nurses' experiences of caring in accordance with the UNCRC. Methods Interviews were conducted in 2019 with 10 children and 13 nurses at a paediatric clinic in western Sweden. Child and nurse data were analysed separately with qualitative content analysis. The results are presented as a synthesis of the combined analysis of both data sets. Results Children did not always meet health‐care professionals with the necessary competence to care for them, and they were not always cared for in a child‐friendly environment. Even though nurses in paediatric care had the competence necessary to meet children's rights in health care, organizational issues made it challenging. Providing health care in accordance with the UNCRC principles required time and competence. Sufficient time to help children participate in their care and ensure that they feel secure was considered necessary—regardless of the health‐care context. Conclusion Health‐care encounters without the necessary time or competence can affect children and future encounters negatively. Instruments to safeguard children's rights in health care need to be developed and implemented, such as a documentation system to make children's rights visible and/or UNCRC certification. Implementation of UNCRC principles in all health‐care situations for children as standardized care requires competence, involvement, strong leadership and economic support. Children's voices in research can assist in guiding care.
