Abstract
BACKGROUND Benefit of adding a second-line immunosuppressive drug to glucocorticoids for the treatment of non-associative immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (naIMHA) in dogs has not been defined prospectively. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Evaluate the effectiveness of different immunosuppressive protocols in naIMHA dogs. ANIMALS Forty-three client-owned dogs. METHODS Open label, randomized, clinical trial. Dogs were treated with methylprednisolone (M-group), methylprednisolone plus cyclosporine (MC-group) or methylprednisolone plus mycophenolate mofetil (MM-group). Dogs were defined as responders by disappearance of signs of immune-mediated destruction and hematocrit stabilization. Frequency of responders was compared between M-group and combined protocols (MC and MM-group evaluated together), and among the 3 different therapeutic groups at 14 (T14), 30 (T30), 60 (T60) days after admission. Frequency of complications, length of hospitalization and relapse were also compared. Death rate was evaluated at discharge, T60 and 365 (T365) days. RESULTS Proportion of responders was not significantly different between M-group and combined protocols (MC and MM-groups), nor among the 3 therapeutic groups at T14, T30, and T60 (P > .17). Frequency of relapse, complications, and length of hospitalization were not significantly different between M-group and dogs treated with combined protocols, nor among the 3 treatment groups (P > .22). Death was significantly more common only for MM-group compared with MC-group at T60 (+42.8%; 95% CI: 11.5-67.4; P = .009), and at T365 (+50%; 95% CI: 17.5-73.2; P = .003). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Combined immunosuppressive therapy did not improve hematological response in naIMHA.

Abstract
Trauma is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in humans and companion animals. Recent efforts in procedural development, training, quality systems, data collection, and research have positively impacted patient outcomes; however, significant unmet need still exists. Coordinated efforts by collaborative, translational, multidisciplinary teams to advance trauma care and improve outcomes have the potential to benefit both human and veterinary patient populations. Strategic use of veterinary clinical trials informed by expertise along the research spectrum (i.e., benchtop discovery, applied science and engineering, large laboratory animal models, clinical veterinary studies, and human randomized trials) can lead to increased therapeutic options for animals while accelerating and enhancing translation by providing early data to reduce the cost and the risk of failed human clinical trials. Active topics of collaboration across the translational continuum include advancements in resuscitation (including austere environments), acute traumatic coagulopathy, trauma-induced coagulopathy, traumatic brain injury, systems biology, and trauma immunology. Mechanisms to improve funding and support innovative team science approaches to current problems in trauma care can accelerate needed, sustainable, and impactful progress in the field. This review article summarizes our current understanding of veterinary and human trauma, thereby identifying knowledge gaps and opportunities for collaborative, translational research to improve multispecies outcomes. This translational trauma group of MDs, PhDs, and DVMs posit that a common understanding of injury patterns and resulting cellular dysregulation in humans and companion animals has the potential to accelerate translation of research findings into clinical solutions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine platelet function and assess fibrinolysis in dogs following trauma using multiple electrical impedance aggregometry and a modified thromboelastographic (TEG) technique. To determine if the severity of trauma, as assessed by the Animal Trauma Triage (ATT) score and clinicopathological markers of shock, is associated with a greater degree of platelet dysfunction and fibrinolysis. SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS Twenty client-owned dogs with trauma (occurring <24 h prior to admission and blood sampling) and ATT score of >4 were prospectively recruited. A control group of 10 healthy dogs was included. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Platelet function was measured using multiple electrode platelet aggregometry (MEPA) utilizing arachidonic acid, ADP, and collagen agonists. Fibrinolysis was assessed in citrated whole blood with the addition of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA; 50 U/mL) using kaolin-activated TEG. Conventional statistical analysis was performed to compare coagulation parameters between the groups and assess linear correlations. Median (interquartile range) ATT score was 5 (5-7), and 65% (n = 13) of dogs suffered polytrauma. Mean (± SD) time from trauma to blood sampling was 9 hours (± 6). Median (interquartile range) shock index and plasma lactate concentration were 1.1 (0.7-2.0, n = 16) and 2.9 mmol/L (0.9-16.0, n = 18), respectively. Four dogs did not survive to discharge (20%). There were no differences between the trauma and control group coagulation variables. A moderate negative correlation between ATT score and area under the curve for ADP was found (P = 0.043, r2 = -0.496). CONCLUSIONS Preliminary evaluation of platelet function measured by MEPA, and fibrinolysis measured by tPA-modified TEG, is not significantly different in this population of dogs with traumatic injury compared to healthy dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between anatomical location of contamination and mortality in dogs with gastrointestinal and biliary origin of septic peritonitis. METHODS Medical records at two private referral hospitals between 2003 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were included if the origin of contamination was confirmed intraoperatively within the gastrointestinal or biliary tract. Cases were excluded if the dog died or was euthanized intraoperatively or where the data regarding the origin of contamination were not available. The association of anatomical origin with survival was assessed specifying the locations as stomach, small intestine, large intestine and biliary tract. The gastrointestinal tract origin was further subdivided into pylorus, nonpylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum and colon. RESULTS The overall survival rate was 75.9% (n = 44/58). There were no significant differences in survival among different anatomical origins of contaminations before or after subdivision (P = 0.349 and 0.832, respectively). Also, there was no association between isolated microorganism species in microbiological culture and the anatomical origin (P = 0.951) and the microorganism species was not associated with survival (P = 0.674). CONCLUSIONS There was no association between anatomical location of leakage, microorganism species and survival although further studies are warranted to analyse the relationships between anatomical leakage site and microorganism species as well as microorganism species and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limb fractures represent the most common orthopaedic disease in pet rabbits. However, only a few studies have evaluated therapeutic details of limb fractures. There are no data available for long-term outcomes of limb fracture treatment. METHODS The medical records of six institutions were reviewed retrospectively to identify cases of traumatic limb bone fractures in pet rabbits between 1999 and 2020. The medical records (n = 387) were analysed for details of fracture prevalence, aetiology, therapy protocols, treatment complications, outcome and long-term effects. In addition to the retrospective data evaluation, 13 rabbits were re-evaluated in person in recent clinical analyses, including orthopaedic examination, radiography and computed-tomographic imaging. Details of long-term effects of fracture treatment were requested over the telephone for a further 232 animals using a standardised questionnaire. RESULTS Long bone fractures accounted for the majority of all fractures (296/387; 76.5%). Hindlimb fractures (301/387; 77.7%) were more common than forelimb fractures (86/387; 22.2%), and tibial fractures and combined fractures of the tibia and fibula (119/387; 30.8%) were observed most frequently. Most fracture treatments were based on osteosynthesis procedures (243/328; 74.1%). Treatment complications occurred in 130 out of 328 (39.6%) cases. A high bodyweight (p = 0.047) and an older age (p = 0.01) were found to be significant risk factors for the emergence of therapy complications. Overall, 75.4% of animals (175/232) had a satisfactory long-term outcome. Limb posture anomalies were evaluated in 61 cases (26.3%). LIMITATIONS The multi-centre approach led to the inclusion of various institutions, veterinarians, treatment protocols and rabbit populations that might have influenced the results. The medical records were reviewed retrospectively, so there were some data that were lacking or could not be collected in a standardised manner. Furthermore, rabbit owners' evaluation of long-term outcomes might be prone to error, despite the use of a standardised interview questionnaire. CONCLUSION Limb fractures are a common orthopaedic issue in pet rabbits. The patient's bodyweight and age are significant risk factors for the emergence of complications during the fracture treatment process. Long-term orthopaedic effects, such as abnormal limb posture and permanent lameness of the affected limb, were observed regularly.

Abstract
Objectives To compare the hemostatic characteristics of cold-stored whole blood (CSWB) from non-greyhound dogs (NGD) and greyhound dogs (GD) over 42 days of storage, notably, platelet closure time (PCT) (NGD only), manual platelet count (PLT) (GD only), ellagic acid (INTEM) and tissue factor activated (EXTEM) rotational thromboelastometry, prothrombin (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen concentration (FIB), and the activities of factors (F) FII, FV, FVII, FVIII, FIX, FX, FXIII antigen (FXIII:Ag), and von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF:Ag). Design Whole blood from 10 NGD and 10 GD, was refrigerated in CPD blood bags at 4°C for 42 days. Blood was analyzed before refrigeration (day 0) and at day 1 (d1), 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 31, 35, 38, and 42. Multivariate linear mixed effects models were created to evaluate coagulation parameters over time and compare NGD and GD. Data are summarized as estimated marginal means with 95% confidence intervals. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Results The PCT for all NGD CSWB was above the device limit by d7. The PLT for GD CSWB did not change during storage. The mean alpha-angle for INTEM and EXTEM decreased to <50% of baseline at d38 and d31 for NGD, and d31 and d17 for GD CSWB. The mean maximum clot firmness (MCF) for INTEM and EXTEM reduced to <50% of baseline at d42 and d28 for both GD and NGD. PT and aPTT for NGD and GD increased over time. For NGD CSWB, the mean FVIII and vWF:Ag activities decreased to <50% of baseline at d7 and d28, respectively, and FIB reached 0.982 g/dL by d24. For GD CSWB, FVIII, FXIII:Ag and FV activities decreased to <50% of baseline by d3, d38, and d38, respectively, and FIB was 0.982 g/dL at baseline. Alpha-angle and MCF for both INTEM and EXTEM, and activities for FII, FV, FIX, FXIII:Ag were significantly lower, and vWF:Ag was significantly higher overall in GD CSWB compared with NGD. A significant difference in the pattern of change over time was detected between NGD and GD in EXTEM alpha-angle, INTEM and EXTEM MCF, FII, and FVIII activities. Conclusions The in vitro viscoelastic parameters of GD and NGD CSWB declines over 42 days, but numerous hemostatic parameters (INTEM and EXTEM alpha-angle and MCF, activity of FII, FV, FV, FVII, FIX, FX, FXIII:Ag, vWF:Ag, and FIB) remain within 50% of baseline for more than 14 days. CSWB from GD compared to NGD has reduced hemostatic activity overall, but a similar pattern of decline for most parameters over time.

Abstract
Synthetic colloid fluids containing hydroxyethyl starch (HES) have been associated with impairment of coagulation in dogs. It is unknown if HES causes coagulation impairment in dogs with naturally occurring critical illness. This study used banked plasma samples from a blinded, randomized clinical trial comparing HES and balanced isotonic crystalloid for bolus fluid therapy in 39 critically ill dogs. Blood was collected prior to fluid administration and 6, 12, and 24 h thereafter. Coagulation biomarkers measured at each time point included prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen concentration, and the activities of coagulation factors V, VII, VIII, IX, and X, von Willebrand factor antigen, antithrombin, and protein C. Given the links between coagulation and inflammation, cytokine concentrations were also measured, including interleukins 6, 8, 10, and 18, keratinocyte-derived chemokine, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. Data were analyzed with linear mixed effects models. No significant treatment-by-time interactions were found for any biomarker, indicating that the pattern of change over time was not modified by treatment. Examining the main effect of time showed significant changes in several coagulation biomarkers and keratinocyte-derived chemokines. This study could not detect evidence of coagulation impairment with HES.

Abstract
Studies demonstrating the prognostic utility of plasma lactate concentration and lactate clearance in cats are limited. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic utility of plasma lactate concentration upon admission and plasma lactate clearance in cats presented to the emergency room with respiratory distress attributed to underlying cardiac or respiratory disease. Additionally, we sought to determine if plasma lactate concentration on admission was significantly associated with the underlying cause of respiratory distress (cardiac vs. respiratory), type of respiratory disease, and vital parameters. Seventy-one cats presented in respiratory distress to the ER at a university teaching hospital were enrolled in this retrospective study. Admission lactate concentration was not associated with survival, duration of hospitalization, vital parameters, or underlying etiology for respiratory distress. In contrast, lactate clearance was significantly associated with survival and length of hospitalization. While a statistically significant association between lactate clearance and length of hospitalization was identified, this finding lacked clinical significance where an increase in lactate concentration by 1% was associated with an increased length of hospitalization by 11.4 min (p = 0.035). Results of this study suggest that lactate clearance may have prognostic utility in this population of cats. Further studies including the larger population of cats with underlying cardiac or respiratory disease are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Snakebites remain a devastating and life-threatening environmental hazard. While the management of snakebites has been well described in humans, few clinical data and guidelines exist for dogs, especially in Korea. OBJECTIVES This retrospective study evaluated the clinical features of 70 dogs with snakebite wounds in Korea. METHODS The medical records of 72 dogs that presented to three animal hospitals from June 2008 to July 2021 were reviewed; among these, 70 dogs that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Their signalment, history, clinical signs, physical examination, blood analysis, treatment, and prognosis were also evaluated. RESULTS Of 70 dog owners, 35 (50%) witnessed the bite, with a mean time between bite and hospital presentation of 9.7 ± 4.1 h in 58 dogs. Blood smears were evaluated in 45 dogs, of which 28 (62%) showed echinocytosis. Anemia and acute kidney injury were found in 21 (29%) and 2 dogs (3%), respectively. A total of 37 dogs (53%) were hospitalized, 5 (7%) of which died. CONCLUSIONS The most significant finding was the high prevalence of echinocytosis. The data from this retrospective study could inform the management of dogs bitten by snakes in Korea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the current literature pertaining to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries sustained from high-rise syndrome in cats and dogs. ETIOLOGY High-rise syndrome is defined as a fall from a height of 2 or more stories that results in a constellation of injuries, including thoracic, abdominal, orthopedic, and orofacial trauma. Animals often fall after slipping from windowsills, engaging in mating behavior, or chasing prey. Cats suffer less severe injuries than dogs due to their "righting reflex" and smaller body mass. Affected animals are younger, and the frequency of falls is higher in warmer months. DIAGNOSIS Physical examination coupled with radiographs, ultrasound, and computed tomography can diagnose a myriad of injuries that include pneumothorax, pleural or abdominal effusion, orthopedic fractures, and orofacial injuries. Bloodwork may identify anemia, thrombocytopenia, or increases in hepatic, renal, or pancreatic values consistent with trauma to these organs. Serial venous or arterial blood gas can help determine the severity of respiratory compromise and influence resuscitative efforts. Traditional coagulation tests and thromboelastography can assess trauma-induced coagulopathy and guide transfusion therapy. THERAPY Animals presenting in shock require hemodynamic stabilization. Initial resuscitation may incorporate crystalloids, colloids, blood products, and analgesics. Thoracic injuries may require oxygen, thoracocentesis, chest tube placement, and mechanical ventilation. Fractures and wounds are decontaminated and splinted/bandaged, with definitive fixation pursued after stabilization. Abdominal injuries are managed medically unless there is severe ongoing bleeding, sepsis, or injury to the urinary tract. PROGNOSIS In feline high-rise syndrome, the prognosis is generally excellent following treatment, with survival exceeding 90%. Canine literature is sparse. The largest retrospective study reported a >90% survival to discharge and a greater need for surgical stabilization in this species. There are no prognostic factors identified that are associated with survival for either species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to document rotational thromboelastometric (ROTEM) characteristics of traumatized cats and to investigate associations between clinicopathological parameters and acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC). A secondary goal was to determine the relevance of autoheparinization in injured cats. STUDY DESIGN Cats presenting with acute (<12 hours) trauma were eligible. Cats were allocated to the ATC group (≥2 hypocoagulable parameters) or non-ATC group (≤1 hypocoagulable parameter) based on ROTEM analysis. Clinicopathological parameters were compared between groups and regression was used to find variables associated with ATC. Heparinase-modified ROTEM (HepTEM) was used to assess for heparin effects in a subgroup. RESULTS Fifty-three cats were included, and the incidence of ATC was 15%. Prolongation of both intrinsic and extrinsic clotting times (CT) was the most frequently altered ROTEM variable in the ATC group, but CTInTEM-prolongation also occurred in 47% of non-ATC cats. The incidence of autoheparinization, defined as concurrent CTInTEM prolongation and CTInTEM:HepTEM ratio >1.1, was 41% and was observed in both cats with and without ATC. None of the evaluated clinicopathological parameters were different between groups or associated with ATC. CONCLUSIONS Acute traumatic coagulopathy in cats is mainly characterized by prolonged CT. No relationship between clinicopathological variables and ATC was identified and prediction of ATC based on these variables was not possible. While autoheparinization is important in cats, it is not the sole cause for ATC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic shock is a common condition that may lead to hemodynamic instability, decreased oxygen delivery, cellular hypoxia, organ damage, and ultimately death. CLINICAL IMPORTANCE This review addresses the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic shock. Hemorrhagic shock can be rapidly fatal and is the leading cause of death in human trauma patients. Understanding the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic shock is imperative in understanding the current hemostatic and resuscitative strategies and is foundational to the development of new therapeutic options. KEY POINTS Shock is a state of inadequate cellular energy production and can be triggered by many causes Both traumatic and non-traumatic causes of hemorrhage can lead to the development of hemorrhagic shock Prompt recognition and attenuation of hemorrhage is paramount in preventing the onset or potentiation of hemorrhagic shock Acute hemorrhage produces distinct physiological responses depending on the magnitude and rate of hemorrhage. Hemorrhagic shock may be directly related to the initial injury but may also be exacerbated and complicated by a post-traumatic coagulopathy, termed acute traumatic coagulopathy.

Abstract
Hemorrhage is a significant cause of death among military working dogs and in civilian canine trauma. While research specifically aimed at canine trauma is limited, many principles from human trauma resuscitation apply. Trauma with significant hemorrhage results in shock and inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues. This leads to aberrations in cellular metabolism, including anaerobic metabolism, decreased energy production, acidosis, cell swelling, and eventual cell death. Considering blood and endothelium as a single organ system, blood failure is a syndrome of endotheliopathy, coagulopathy, and platelet dysfunction. In severe cases following injury, blood failure develops and is induced by inadequate oxygen delivery in the presence of hemorrhage, tissue injury, and acute stress from trauma. Severe hemorrhagic shock is best treated with hemostatic resuscitation, wherein blood products are used to restore effective circulating volume and increase oxygen delivery to tissues without exacerbating blood failure. The principles of hemostatic resuscitation have been demonstrated in severely injured people and the authors propose an algorithm for applying this to canine patients. The use of plasma and whole blood to resuscitate severely injured canines while minimizing the use of crystalloids and colloids could prove instrumental in improving both mortality and morbidity. More work is needed to understand the canine patient that would benefit from hemostatic resuscitation, as well as to determine the optimal resuscitation strategy for these patients.

Abstract
Acute hemorrhage in small animals results from traumatic and non-traumatic causes. This review seeks to describe current understanding of the resuscitation of the acutely hemorrhaging small animal (dog and cat) veterinary patient through evaluation of pre-clinical canine models of hemorrhage and resuscitation, clinical research in dogs and cats, and selected extrapolation from human medicine. The physiologic dose and response to whole blood loss in the canine patient is repeatable both in anesthetized and awake animals and is primarily characterized clinically by increased heart rate, decreased systolic blood pressure, and increased shock index and biochemically by increased lactate and lower base excess. Previously, initial resuscitation in these patients included immediate volume support with crystalloid and/or colloid, regardless of total volume, with a target to replace lost vascular volume and bring blood pressure back to normal. Newer research now supports prioritizing hemorrhage control in conjunction with judicious crystalloid administration followed by early consideration for administration of platelets, plasma and red blood during the resuscitation phase. This approach minimizes blood loss, ameliorates coagulopathy, restores oxygen delivery and correct changes in the glycocalyx. There are many hurdles in the application of this approach in clinical veterinary medicine including the speed with which the bleeding source is controlled and the rapid availability of blood component therapy. Recommendations regarding the clinical approach to volume resuscitation in the acutely hemorrhaging veterinary patient are made based on the canine pre-clinical, veterinary clinical and human literature reviewed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether admission venous plasma lactate concentration, serially calculated lactate variables, or the Acute Patient Physiologic and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLEfast ) score could discriminate hospital survivors from non-survivors in dogs presenting to the emergency department with clinical signs of shock. DESIGN Prospective case series performed over a 24-month period. SETTING Large urban private teaching hospital. ANIMALS Seventy-one dogs admitted to the ICU with initial peripheral venous plasma lactate concentration > 2.5 mmol/L and clinical and hemodynamic parameters consistent with shock. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, temperature, initial venous plasma lactate, and APPLEfast score were recorded at admission. Lactate concentrations were serially recorded at predefined time points and used to calculate lactate variables, including lactime (time lactate > 2.5 mmol/L), lactate clearance ([lactateinitial - lactatedelayed ]/ lactateinitial × 100), and LACAREA (area under the lactate concentration versus time curve). Primary outcome was survival to discharge. Overall survival rate was 61%. Admission plasma lactate did not differ between groups (P = 0.28). Lactime was shorter in survivors vs non-survivors (P = 0.03). Lactate clearance at hours (h) 1, 4, 10, and 16 was greater in survivors vs non-survivors (P < 0.05). Final plasma lactate clearance differed between groups (P < 0.05). LACAREA at time intervals 1 to 4 hours, 4 to 10 hours, 10 to 16 hours, and 16 to 24 hours was larger in non-survivors vs survivors (P < 0.05). Total LACAREA did not differ between groups (P = 0.51). Admission APPLEfast was not different between survivors and non-survivors (P = 0.16). CONCLUSIONS While neither single APPLEfast nor admission plasma lactate concentration could discriminate between hospital survivors and non-survivors, measures of lactate clearance can prognosticate survival in dogs with shock.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the current role of cryoprecipitate in human and canine transfusion medicine. DATA SOURCES Human and veterinary scientific reviews and original studies found using PubMed and CAB Abstract search engines were reviewed. HUMAN DATA SYNTHESIS In the human critical care setting, cryoprecipitate is predominantly used for fibrinogen replenishment in bleeding patients with acute traumatic coagulopathy. Other coagulopathic patient cohorts for whom cryoprecipitate is recommended include those undergoing cardiovascular or obstetric procedures or patients bleeding from advanced liver disease. Preferential selection of cryoprecipitate versus fibrinogen concentrate (when available) is currently being investigated. Also a matter of ongoing debate is whether to administer this product as part of a fixed-dose massive hemorrhage protocol or to incorporate it into a goal-directed transfusion algorithm applied to the individual bleeding patient. VETERINARY DATA SYNTHESIS Although there are sporadic reports of the use of cryoprecipitate in dogs with heritable coagulopathies, there are few to no data pertaining to its use in acquired hypofibrinogenemic states. Low fibrinogen in dogs (as in people) has been documented with acute traumatic coagulopathy, advanced liver disease, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Bleeding secondary to these hypocoagulable states may be amenable to cryoprecipitate therapy. Indications for preferential selection of cryoprecipitate (versus fresh frozen plasma) remain to be determined. CONCLUSIONS In the United States, cryoprecipitate remains the standard of care for fibrinogen replenishment in the bleeding human trauma patient. Its preferential selection for this purpose is the subject of several ongoing human clinical trials. Timely incorporation of cryoprecipitate into the transfusion protocol of the individual bleeding patient with hypofibrinogenemia may conserve blood products, mitigate adverse transfusion-related events, and improve patient outcomes. Cryoprecipitate is readily available, effective, and safe for use in dogs. The role of this blood product in clinical canine patients with acquired coagulopathy remains unknown.

Abstract
Viscoelastic testing, such as thromboelastography or thromboelastometry, is performed on whole-blood samples, which include both soluble plasma factors as well as blood cells and platelets bearing tissue factor and phospholipid. This methodology allows identification of fibrinolysis and can provide analysis of platelet function. Viscoelastic testing has become increasingly accessible and popular in emergency and critical care settings in recent years and can provide important information for the diagnosis and management of patients with hemostatic disorders. This article discusses the principles and interpretation of viscoelastic testing, application to small animal emergency and critical care medicine, and potential advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) and identify associated clinical and laboratory parameters including rotational thromboelastometry. STUDY DESIGN Dogs presenting within 6 hours after trauma were allocated to the ATC or non-ATC group based on thromboelastometry analysis (ex-tem S, in-tem S, fib-tem S). ATC was defined as ≥2 hypocoagulable parameters in 1 profile and ≥ 1 hypocoagulable parameter in an additional profile. Parameters used were ex-tem and in-tem clotting time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), maximum clot firmness (MCF), maximum lysis and fib-tem MCF. Clinical and laboratory parameters at presentation, animal trauma triage (ATT) score, transfusion requirement and outcome were compared. Logistic regression was used to identify independent factors associated with ATC. RESULTS Eleven of 33 dogs presented with ATC and showed ex-tem CT and CFT prolongation and reduced MCF amplitude in all profiles (all p < 0.001). pH (p = 0.043) and potassium concentration (p = 0.022) were significantly lower and bleeding (p = 0.027) and plasma transfusions (p = 0.001) more common in dogs with ATC. Time after trauma (p = 0.040) and Animal Trauma Triage score (p = 0.038, including haematocrit as confounding factor) were associated with the presence of ATC. CONCLUSION Acute traumatic coagulopathy is more common in traumatized dogs than previously reported. Acute traumatic coagulopathy was associated with acidosis, Animal trauma triage score, time after trauma and higher transfusion needs. Coagulation abnormalities include ex-tem CT and CFT prolongations and decreased clot strength.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess clotting times, coagulation factor activities, sterility, and thromboelastographic parameters of liquid plasma (LP), thawed fresh frozen plasma (FFP-T), and 2 novel formulations of freeze-dried plasma (FDP) stored refrigerated over 35 days. SAMPLE 6 units of canine LP and FFP-T from a commercial animal blood bank and 5 units each of 2 formulations of canine FDP. PROCEDURES Prothrombin time; activated partial thromboplastin time; activities of coagulation factors II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII; and thromboelastographic parameters were determined for each product on days 0 (baseline), 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35. For each day, a sample of each product was also submitted for aerobic bacterial culture. RESULTS Small changes in coagulation factor activities and mild increased time to initial clot formation in LP and FFP-T were noted over the 35-day storage period. Activities of factor VIII in FDP1 and factor XII in FDP2 were < 50% at baseline but varied throughout. Compared with FFP-T, time to initial clot formation was increased and clot strength was preserved or increased for the FDPs throughout the study. One FDP had decreased pH, compared with other products. No plasma product yielded bacterial growth. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Liquid plasma and FFP-T would be reasonable to use when stored refrigerated for up to 35 days. Both FDP products showed variability in coagulation factor activities. Studies investigating the usefulness of these plasma products (FDPs) in dogs and the variable days of refrigerated storage (all products) are warranted. (Am J Vet Res 2020;81:964-972).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the coagulation status of traumatized dogs over the first 24 hours after admission. STUDY DESIGN In 33 dogs presenting within 6 hours after trauma blood was sampled for rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), thrombocyte number and venous blood gas analysis at presentation and 6 and 24 hours thereafter. At each time point, dogs were defined as hypo-, normo- or hypercoagulable based on extrinsic, intrinsic and fibrinogen ROTEM profiles. RESULTS Significantly more dogs (11/33) presented hypocoagulable compared with 6 hours (p = 0.046) and 24 hours (p = 0.008) thereafter and none presented hypercoagulable. Significantly more dogs were hypercoagulable (6/23, p = 0.014) and no dog was hypocoagulable at 24 hours compared with presentation. All evaluated ROTEM parameters except maximum lysis were significantly more hypocoagulable at presentation compared with 24 hours thereafter. CONCLUSION Hypocoagulability is more common in acutely traumatized dogs than previously described. Dogs were hypo- or normocoagulable at presentation and the coagulation status changed to normo- or hypercoagulability over the first 24 hours. Clotting times, clot formation and clot firmness but not clot lysis were significantly altered at presentation compared with 24 hours and fibrinogen concentration or function may play an important role in the dynamic change of coagulation state over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM There are few studies in the literature evaluating possible alterations in laboratory tests in patients with maxillofacial fractures. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in admission laboratory tests of patients with maxillofacial fractures with indications for surgical treatment, including the influence of dento-alveolar trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from complete blood counts, blood coagulation tests, blood chemistries, and urinalysis results were obtained. The occurrence of concomitant dento-alveolar trauma was noted. The medical records were also re-evaluated later to verify the treatment outcome and the occurrence of complications. Statistical analyses were performed using the likelihood-ratio test to verify significant changes in the evaluated parameters (P ≤ .050). RESULTS There was a prevalence of males (78%) with a mean age of 35.9 years. Lower erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin levels, and/or hematocrit were observed in males with associated fractures and with simultaneous dento-alveolar fractures. Higher mean neutrophil, segmented neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts were observed in patients with simultaneous dento-alveolar trauma. A higher mean activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) ratio was also observed. Lower potassium levels were observed for patients in the fourth decade of life. Higher leukocyte counts not associated with trauma were observed in the urinalysis results of females and in the group of patients aged 20 or younger. Verification of treatment outcome showed two cases of infections and two cases that needed re-operation after mandible fractures. These four cases showed no significant changes in laboratory tests regarding the predisposition for complications. CONCLUSION Patients with maxillofacial fractures had neutrophilia, increased aPTT, and non-traumatic leukocyturia. There was an influence of associated fractures and dento-alveolar trauma on the decrease in red blood cell parameters, neutrophilia, and lymphocytosis and of age on hypokalemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the extent to which rapid thromboelastography (r-TEG) could decrease the testing time in comparison with that required for kaolin-activated thromboelastography (TEG), and to compare 2 types of blood samples (ie, native and citrated whole blood [WB]), for determining r-TEG values in healthy dogs. DESIGN Prospective observational study. SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS Sixteen healthy Beagles. INTERVENTIONS Kaolin-activated TEG test using citrated WB samples and r-TEG test using native and citrated WB samples were performed in 16 dogs. At 60 minutes after the initial blood sampling, further samples were collected from a subset of 6 dogs in the same manner to evaluate intraindividual repeatability of r-TEG. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The mean time to maximum amplitude (MA) for r-TEG with native and citrated WB samples was recorded as 1313.9 ± 250.9 seconds and 1351.3 ± 264.6 seconds (mean ± SD), respectively, and 1779.9 ± 197.0 seconds for kaolin-activated TEG. Coefficients of variation with native and citrated WB samples for r-TEG values, TEG-activated clotting time, clot formation time, α angle, and MA, were determined to be 13.4% versus 18.8%, 11.1% versus 16.6%, 4.2% versus 5.1%, and 10.0% versus 10.0%, respectively. Intraindividual variations were lower for native WB samples than for citrated WB samples. CONCLUSIONS The r-TEG test significantly decreased the mean time to MA compared with the kaolin-activated TEG test. In addition, native WB samples showed lower coefficients of variation and intraindividual variation than citrated WB samples in r-TEG analysis; this suggests that native WB samples can provide more consistent results. Therefore, the r-TEG method using native WB samples is recommended for assessment of dogs' hemostatic status when an early diagnosis is required.

Abstract
The fibrinolytic system is activated concurrently with coagulation; it regulates haemostasis and prevents thrombosis by restricting clot formation to the area of vascular injury and dismantling the clot as healing occurs. Dysregulation of the fibrinolytic system, which results in hyperfibrinolysis, may manifest as clinically important haemorrhage. Hyperfibrinolysis occurs in cats and dogs secondary to a variety of congenital and acquired disorders. Acquired disorders associated with hyperfibrinolysis, such as trauma, cavitary effusions, liver disease and Angiostrongylus vasorum infection, are commonly encountered in primary care practice. In addition, delayed haemorrhage reported in greyhounds following trauma and routine surgical procedures has been attributed to a hyperfibrinolytic disorder, although this has yet to be characterised. The diagnosis of hyperfibrinolysis is challenging and, until recently, has relied on techniques that are not readily available outside referral hospitals. With the recent development of point-of-care viscoelastic techniques, assessment of fibrinolysis is now possible in referral practice. This will provide the opportunity to target haemorrhage due to hyperfibrinolysis with antifibrinolytic drugs and thereby reduce associated morbidity and mortality. The fibrinolytic system and the conditions associated with increased fibrinolytic activity in cats and dogs are the focus of this review article. In addition, laboratory and point-of-care techniques for assessing hyperfibrinolysis and antifibrinolytic treatment for patients with haemorrhage are reviewed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the prognostic value of admission hematologic parameters serum/plasma iron, red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and nucleated red blood cells (nRBCs) in dogs presenting with acute traumatic injury. DESIGN Retrospective observational study (2009-2015). SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS One hundred and twenty-nine clinical dogs presenting within 24 hours of acute traumatic injury. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS One hundred and twenty-nine dogs met the inclusion criteria and 109 (84.5%) survived, while 20 (15.5%) died or were euthanized in hospital. Patients with blunt force trauma comprised 79.8% of the patient population; dogs with penetrating trauma comprised 20.2% of cases. Hypoferremia occurred in all nonsurvivors, and the median serum/plasma iron concentration was significantly lower in nonsurvivors than survivors (P = 0.028). Normal or increased serum/plasma iron had 100% specificity and 100% positive predictive value for survival. Red blood cell distribution width was not significantly different between groups (P = 0.417). The presence of nRBCs was significantly associated with nonsurvival (P = 0.030), although the absolute nRBC concentrations were not significantly different (P = 0.070). A multiple logistic regression model found age, type of injury, presence of nRBCs, and serum/plasma iron to be independent predictors of survival with an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve of 0.813. CONCLUSIONS The presence of nRBCs and low serum/plasma iron are associated with mortality in patients with acute trauma; however, red blood cell distribution width was not associated with survival. Absence of hypoferremia was highly associated with a favorable prognosis in this patient population. These parameters may warrant inclusion in trauma scoring systems.

Abstract
Polytrauma is a common emergency condition in small animals and is frequently associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates compared to minor trauma. Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) is a major complication of extensive traumatic injury, carrying a high risk of death despite intensive care treatment. Little is known about the prevalence and the prognostic impact of MODS in feline polytrauma. The current study aimed to prospectively evaluate the occurrence and the prognostic significance of organ dysfunction at admission in a population of polytraumatized cats. Cats with polytrauma requiring intensive care unit hospitalization were included and categorized according to outcome (survivors/non-survivors). Clinical and clinicopathological data, including scores of disease severity [Animal Trauma Triage Score (ATTS), APPLEfast, and APPLEfull], selected organ dysfunction and presence of MODS were evaluated upon admission, and analyzed with respect to mortality. Non-parametric statistics was performed and P < 0.05 was considered significant. Thirty-eight cats met the inclusion criteria: 8/38 (21%) had penetrating trauma, while 30/38 (79%) had blunt trauma. The overall in-hospital mortality was 37% (14/38). Cats with evidence of MODS upon admission had significantly higher frequency of death compared to cats without MODS (9/14 vs. 2/24 P = 0.0004). Hemostatic dysfunction, respiratory dysfunction, and MODS upon admission were significantly associated with mortality in the univariate logistic regression analysis (P = 0.005, P = 0.001, P = 0.001, respectively). The values of APPLEfast, APPLEfull, and ATTS were independently associated with a higher risk of death and positively correlated with the number of dysfunctional organs (P = 0.025, P = 0.004, P = 0.003, r = 0.57, P = 0.0002; r = 0.59, P = 0.0001; r = 0.55, P = 0.0003, respectively). Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome is a common complication of feline polytrauma and its development is associated with increased disease severity and worse outcomes. The presence of hemostatic dysfunction and respiratory dysfunction upon admission is associated with a higher risk of death. The ATTS and the APPLE scores are useful prognostic tools for the assessment of cats with polytrauma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess pharmacokinetics of tranexamic acid (TXA) in dogs and assess antifibrinolytic properties of TXA in canine blood by use of a thromboelastography-based in vitro model of hyperfibrinolysis. ANIMALS 6 healthy adult dogs. PROCEDURES Dogs received each of 4 TXA treatments (10 mg/kg, IV; 20 mg/kg, IV; approx 15 mg/kg, PO; and approx 20 mg/kg, PO) in a randomized crossover-design study. Blood samples were collected at baseline (time 0; immediately prior to drug administration) and predetermined time points afterward for pharmacokinetic analysis and pharmacodynamic (thromboelastography) analysis by use of an in vitro hyperfibrinolysis model. RESULTS Maximum amplitude (MA [representing maximum clot strength]) significantly increased from baseline at all time points for all treatments. The MA was lower at 360 minutes for the 10-mg/kg IV treatment than for other treatments. Percentage of clot lysis 30 minutes after MA was detected was significantly decreased from baseline at all time points for all treatments; at 360 minutes, this value was higher for the 10-mg/kg IV treatment than for other treatments and higher for the 20-mg/kg IV treatment than for the 20-mg/kg PO treatment. Maximum plasma TXA concentrations were dose dependent. At 20 mg/kg, IV, plasma TXA concentrations briefly exceeded concentrations suggested for complete inhibition of fibrinolysis. Oral drug administration resulted in a later peak antifibrinolytic effect than did IV administration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Administration of TXA improved clot strength and decreased fibrinolysis in blood samples from healthy dogs in an in vitro hyperfibrinolysis model. Further research is needed to determine clinical effects of TXA in dogs with hyperfibrinolysis.

Abstract
Background: Hemorrhagic shock and volume replacement can alter coagulation. Synthetic colloids, hydroxyethyl starch (HES), and gelatin, may enhance hypocoagulability. Our primary objective was to describe the effect of four fluid products on coagulation in canine hemorrhagic shock. Our secondary objective was to compare measurements of coagulation during shock to baseline in all dogs. Methods: Anesthetized greyhounds subjected to atraumatic hemorrhage for 60 min were administered 20 mL kg−1 of either fresh whole blood (FWB), 6% HES 130/0.4, 4% succinylated gelatin (GELO), or 80 mL kg−1 of isotonic crystalloid over 20 min (n = 6 per group). Platelet closure time (PCT), rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) and plasma coagulation assays were measured at baseline, end of hemorrhage (shock), and 40 (T60), and 160 (T180) min after study fluid. ROTEM parameters included clotting time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), alpha angle, maximum clot firmness (MCF), lysis index at 60 min (LI60), and thrombodynamic potential index (TPI) for INTEM, EXTEM, FIBTEM (MCF only), and APTEM (LI60 only) profiles. Plasma coagulation assays included prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen concentration and activities of factor VII (FVII), factor VIII (FVIII), and von Willebrand Factor antigen (vWF). Between-group differences were tested using linear mixed models with post-hoc between-group comparisons (Bonferroni-Holm corrected). Differences between baseline and shock were tested using paired t-tests. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: GELO showed longer PCT at T60, compared with FWB and CRYST, and at T180, compared with all other groups. HES showed longer EXTEM CT at T60, compared with all other groups. HES showed lower INTEM and EXTEM MCF at T60 and lower INTEM MCF at T180, compared with FWB. Some plasma coagulation assays showed greater hypocoagulability with HES. Comparing shock to baseline, EXTEM CT, INTEM CFT, EXTEM CFT, PT, and FVIII significantly increased and PCT, INTEM CT, INTEM MCF, EXTEM MCF, EXTEM LI60, EXTEM TPI, FIBTEM MCF, APTT, fibrinogen, FVII, and vWF significantly decreased. Conclusions: In dogs with hemorrhagic shock, volume replacement with GELO caused mild platelet dysfunction and HES was associated with coagulation changes consistent with hypocoagulability, beyond effects of hemodilution. Shock alone produced some evidence of hypocoagulability.

Abstract
Hyperfibrinolysis (HFL) is a pathophysiological mechanism that has not been described in dogs or cats extensively. The aim of this study was to describe rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) parameters and underlying diagnosis in dogs and cats with HFL and evaluate association with bleeding diathesis. The ROTEM database was retrospectively searched for EXTEM (ROTEM activated with proprietary tissue factor) tracings with maximum lysis at 60min ≥15%. Concurrent ROTEM and plasma coagulation tests, thrombocyte number, diagnosis and survival to hospital discharge were extracted from medical records. Analysis of differences between dogs and cats and of factors associated with bleeding, fulminant HFL (clot breakdown within 30min) and survival to hospital discharge were performed. Hyperfibrinolysis was detected in eight cats presenting with haemoabdomen or haemothorax (n=4/8, 50%) and trauma (n=3/8, 38%) and in 36 dogs with angiostrongylosis (n=12, 33%), neoplasia (n=7, 19%), liver disease (n=4, 11%) and others including apparently healthy dogs (n=3, 8%). Hyperfibrinolysis was associated with prolonged EXTEM and APTEM (EXTEM with added apoprotein for inhibition of HFL) clotting time and decreased FIBTEM (EXTEM with added cytochalasin D for inhibition of thrombocytes) maximum clot firmness (MCF) in dogs and cats and with decreased EXTEM MCF in dogs. Bleeding dogs had significantly hypocoagulable EXTEM tracings. Fulminant HFL was associated with severe hypofibrinogenaemia in dogs (P=0.005) and was not associated with survival to hospital discharge. Evidence of HFL was demonstrated in dogs and cats with bleeding, trauma, parasitic and neoplastic disease. HFL is associated with late and weak clot formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the current literature pertaining to the use of lactate as a prognostic indicator and therapeutic guide, the utility of measuring lactate concentrations in body fluids other than blood or plasma, and the clinical management of hyperlactatemia in dogs, cats, and horses. DATA SOURCES Articles were retrieved without date restrictions primarily via PubMed, Scopus, and CAB Abstracts as well as by manual selection. HUMAN AND VETERINARY DATA SYNTHESIS Increased plasma lactate concentrations are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In populations with high mortality, hyperlactatemia is moderately predictive in identifying nonsurvivors. Importantly, eulactatemia predicts survival better than hyperlactatemia predicts death. Consecutive lactate measurements and calculated relative measures appear to outperform single measurements. The use of lactate as a therapeutic guide has shown promising results in people but is relatively uninvestigated in veterinary species. Increased lactate concentrations in body fluids other than blood should raise the index of suspicion for septic or malignant processes. Management of hyperlactatemia should target the underlying cause. CONCLUSION Lactate is a valuable triage and risk stratification tool that can be used to separate patients into higher and lower risk categories. The utility of lactate concentration as a therapeutic target and the measurement of lactate in body fluids shows promise but requires further research.

Abstract
Trauma is common in dogs and causes significant morbidity and mortality, but it remains a challenge to assess prognosis in these patients. This study aimed to investigate the use of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and nucleosome concentrations as prognostic biomarkers in canine trauma. Using a prospective, observational case-control study design, 49 dogs with trauma were consecutively enrolled from 07/2015 to 10/2017 and followed to hospital discharge. Dogs with animal trauma triage (ATT) scores ≥3 at presentation were eligible for enrollment. Dogs <3 kg or with pre-existing coagulopathies were excluded. Thirty-three healthy control dogs were also enrolled. Illness and injury severity scores were calculated using at-presentation data. Plasma cfDNA was measured in triplicate using a benchtop fluorimeter. Plasma nucleosome concentrations were determined in duplicate by ELISA. Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare biomarker concentrations between groups and between survivors and non-survivors. Associations between biomarkers were evaluated using Spearman's correlation coefficients. Alpha was set at 0.05. Concentrations of cfDNA and nucleosomes were significantly higher in injured dogs compared to healthy controls (P ≤ 0.0001). Nucleosomes and cfDNA concentrations were positively correlated (rs 0.475, P < 0.001). Concentrations of both cfDNA and nucleosomes were correlated with shock index (rs 0.367, P = 0.010, rs 0.358, P = 0.012 respectively), but only nucleosomes were correlated with ATT (rs 0.327, P = 0.022) and acute patient physiology and laboratory evaluation (APPLE) scores (rs 0.356, P = 0.012). Median nucleosome concentrations were significantly higher in non-survivors than in survivors [8.2 AU (3.1-26.4) vs. 1.6 AU (0.5-5.2); P = 0.01]. Among illness severity scores, only APPLE was discriminant for survival (AUROC 0.912, P < 0.001). In summary, in moderately-severely injured dogs, high nucleosome concentrations are significantly associated with non-survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the technical performance of the turbidimetric ACL-TOP CTS 300 coagulation analyzer (IL) in dogs and cats and to create reference intervals for standard and novel parameters. DESIGN Coagulation testing results from dogs and cats generated by the IL were prospectively compared with another mechanical clot detection system. Precision was documented and reference intervals were created for prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and Clauss fibrinogen and D-dimer values, as well as for the quantitative clot curve parameters (high and low amplitude, delta, and first and second derivative curves). Clot curve signatures containing common artifacts due to lipemia, hemolysis, or preactivation were demonstrated. ANIMALS Residual frozen plasma from 20 dogs and 10 cats was used for method comparison; prospectively recruited healthy dogs (n = 48) and cats (n = 45) were used for reference interval and precision studies. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Bland-Altman analysis showed a proportional positive bias in the IL compared with mechanical clot detection in dogs and a suggestion of a similar pattern in cats. Precision was good and met manufacturer's recommendations for all assays. Reference intervals are reported. Clot curve artifacts were similar in animals to those reported in people. CONCLUSIONS The turbidimetric system had a slight high proportional positive bias compared with mechanical clot detection. Thus, new reference intervals were generated including for novel parameters generated by clot curve analysis. Some preanalytical errors can be identified by inspection of clot curves. This robust novel technology compares favorably with mechanical endpoint detection methods and can be used in dogs and cats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical presentation and outcome of known attacks in client-owned dogs caused by the common coyote, Canis latrans. DESIGN Retrospective observational study. SETTING Private referral hospital. ANIMALS One hundred fifty-four client-owned dogs known to be attacked by coyotes. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Records from a private referral hospital from May 1997 through December 2012 were reviewed. Time of day and month/season of year, signalment, body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, body weight, location and severity of wounds inflicted, common injuries, length of hospitalization, necessity of surgical wound repair under anesthesia, antimicrobial use and mortality were recorded. Eighty-six percent of dogs presenting following coyote attack weighed <10 kg. Overall mortality rate was 15.6%. Dogs with bite wounds to the thorax had the highest mortality at 21.3%. Criteria for systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) based on admission vital signs were met in 58.8% of dogs and the presence of SIRS was significantly associated with mortality (P < 0.001). Common coyote-induced injuries included rib fracture (38/154; 24.6%), pulmonary contusion (30/154; 19.4%), tracheal tear (18/154; 11.6%), pneumothorax (16/154; 10.3%), abdominal wall hernia (9/154; 5.8%), and abdominal penetrating wounds (8/146; 5.5%). Dogs <10 kg were significantly more likely to incur wounds to multiple body parts or sustain abdominal penetrating wounds. The presence of rib fracture was significantly associated with mortality. Frequency of coyote attacks over the time of this study increased by 330%. CONCLUSIONS Coyote attacks on dogs are a problem in Southern California and are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, especially in dogs with wounds to the thorax. Aggressive management involving surgical wound repair was associated with survival to discharge.

Abstract
Massive hemorrhage remains a major cause of traumatic deaths. The ideal fluid resuscitative strategy is much debated. Research has provided inconsistent results regarding which fluid strategy is ideal; the optimum fluid type, timing, and volume remains elusive. Aggressive large-volume resuscitation has been the mainstay based on controlled hemorrhage animal models. For uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock, liberal fluid resuscitative strategies exacerbate the lethal triad, invoke resuscitative injury, and increase mortality while more restrictive fluid strategies tend to ameliorate trauma-induced coagulopathy and favor a greater chance of survival. This article discusses the current evidence regarding liberal and restrictive fluid strategies for trauma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the presence of acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) in dogs and cats following blunt trauma and to relate coagulation variables with injury severity and admission variables. DESIGN Prospective, single center, observational study from 2013 to 2014. SETTING Urban private referral hospital. ANIMALS Eighteen and 19 client-owned dogs and cats, respectively, sustaining blunt trauma within 8 hours of presentation without prior resuscitation; 17 healthy staff and client-owned control cats METHODS: Blood samples were collected upon presentation for measurement of blood gas, lactate, blood glucose, ionized calcium, PCV, total plasma protein, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen, platelet count, and thromboelastography. RESULTS ATC was diagnosed in 1 dog and 1 cat on presentation. Hypercoagulability was documented in 4/18 (22%) of dogs and 1/19 (5.3%) of cats. In dogs, prolongation of PT (P = 0.018), aPTT (P = 0.013) and decrease in maximum amplitude (MA) (P = 0.027) were significantly associated with injury severity as measured by the animal trauma triage (ATT) score. In cats, PT, aPTT, MA, and clot strength (G) were not associated with injury severity. In cats, increasing blood glucose and lactate were significantly associated with decreasing MA (P = 0.041, P = 0.031) and G (P = 0.014, P = 0.03). In both dogs (P = 0.002) and cats (P = 0.007), fibrinogen concentration was significantly correlated with G. CONCLUSIONS ATC is rare in minimally injured dogs and cats following blunt trauma. In dogs, ATT score is significantly associated with PT, aPTT, and MA, suggesting an increased risk of ATC in more severely injured animals. ATT score does not appear to predict coagulopathies in cats. Future studies including more severely injured animals are warranted to better characterize coagulation changes associated with blunt trauma.

Abstract
Disorders of hemostasis can be difficult to fully elucidate but can severely affect patient outcome. The optimal therapy for coagulopathies is also not always clear. Point of care (POC) testing in veterinary medicine can assist in the diagnosis of hemostatic disorders and also direct treatment. Advantages of POC testing include rapid turnaround times, ease of use, and proximity to the patient. Disadvantages include differences in analytic performance compared with reference laboratory devices, the potential for operator error, and limited test options per device. Conventional coagulation tests such as prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and activated clotting time can be measured by POC devices and can accurately diagnose hypocoagulability, but they cannot detect hypercoagulability or disorders of fibrinolysis. Viscoelastic POC coagulation testing more accurately evaluates in vivo coagulation, and can detect hypocoagulability, hypercoagulability, and alterations in fibrinolysis. POC platelet function testing methodologies can detect platelet adhesion abnormalities including von Willebrand disease, and can be used to monitor the efficacy of antiplatelet drugs. It is unlikely that a single test would be ideal for assessing the complete coagulation status of all patients; therefore, the ideal combination of tests for a specific patient needs to be determined based on an understanding of the underlying disease, and protocols must be standardized to minimize interoperator and interinstitutional variability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To (1) review the development and medical applications of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solutions with particular emphasis on its physiochemical properties; (2) critically appraise the available evidence in human and veterinary medicine, and (3) evaluate the potential risks and benefits associated with their use in critically ill small animals. DATA SOURCES Human and veterinary original research articles, scientific reviews, and textbook sources from 1950 to the present. HUMAN DATA SYNTHESIS HES solutions have been used extensively in people for over 30 years and ever since its introduction there has been a great deal of debate over its safety and efficacy. Recently, results of seminal trials and meta-analyses showing increased risks related to kidney dysfunction and mortality in septic and critically ill patients, have led to the restriction of HES use in these patient populations by European regulatory authorities. Although the initial ban on the use of HES in Europe has been eased, proof regarding the benefits and safety profile of HES in trauma and surgical patient populations has been requested by these same European regulatory authorities. VETERINARY DATA SYNTHESIS The veterinary literature is limited mostly to experimental studies and clinical investigations with small populations of patients with short-term end points and there is insufficient evidence to generate recommendations. CONCLUSIONS Currently, there are no consensus recommendations regarding the use of HES in veterinary medicine. Veterinarians and institutions affected by the HES restrictions have had to critically reassess the risks and benefits related to HES usage based on the available information and sometimes adapt their procedures and policies based on their reassessment. Meanwhile, large, prospective, randomized veterinary studies evaluating HES use are needed to achieve relevant levels of evidence to enable formulation of specific veterinary guidelines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate hemostatic changes following experimental acute hemorrhage in dogs using traditional coagulation tests (eg, platelet count, prothrombin time [PT], and activated partial thromboplastin time [aPTT]), kaolin-activated thromboelastography (TEG), and whole blood multiple electrode impedance platelet aggregometry. DESIGN Prospective study. SETTING Research laboratory. ANIMALS Five Beagles. INTERVENTIONS Dogs were anesthetized prior to obtaining blood samples for baseline PCV, total plasma protein (TPP), arterial blood-gas, platelet count, PT, aPTT, TEG, fibrinogen, and aggregometry. Blood was obtained at 4 additional time points, following 20% blood volume loss, 40% blood volume loss, 60 minutes of sustained hypotension, and after autologous blood transfusion. In addition, heart rate and direct arterial blood pressure were measured at each time point. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Significant decreases were noted for PCV (P = 0.048), TPP (P < 0.0001), and arterial blood pressures (P < 0.0001) over time. Platelet count did not change significantly (P = 0.879), but platelet function was decreased following hemorrhage when arachidonic acid (P = 0.004) and ADP (P = 0.008) were used as agonists. The TEG variables R (P = 0.030), MA (P = 0.043), and G (P = 0.037) were significantly, albeit mildly, changed following hemorrhage. Significant prolongations in PT (P < 0.0001) and aPTT (P = 0.041), and decreases in fibrinogen concentration (P = 0.002) were also seen. CONCLUSION Platelet dysfunction occurred following hemorrhage in this model, despite a stable platelet count. Additionally, significant changes associated with hemorrhage were documented in aPTT, fibrinogen, and MA. Platelet function testing in dogs with naturally occurring hemorrhage warrants further investigation.
