The time-domain signature of negative acoustic group velocity in microsphere suspensions

Simultaneous realization of slow and fast acoustic waves using a fractal structure of Koch curve

An acoustic metamaterial based on a fractal structure, the Koch curve, is designed to simultaneously realize slow and fast acoustic waves. Owing to the multiple transmitting paths in the structure resembling the Koch curve, the acoustic waves travelling along different paths interfere with each other. Therefore, slow waves are created on the basis of the resonance of a Koch-curve-shaped loop, and meanwhile, fast waves even with negative group velocities are obtained due to the destructive interference of two acoustic waves with opposite phases. Thus, the transmission of acoustic wave can be freely manipulated with the Koch-curve shaped structure.

Velocity dispersion in trabecular bone: influence of multiple scattering and of absorption

Speed of sound measurements are widely used clinically to assess bone strength. Trabecular bone is an attenuating composite material in which negative values of velocity dispersion have been measured, this behavior remaining poorly explained physically. The aim of this work is to describe the ultrasonic propagation in trabecular bone modeled by infinite cylinders immersed in a saturating matrix, and to derive the physical determinants of velocity dispersion. A homogenization model accounting for the coupling of multiple scattering and absorption phenomena allows the computation of phase velocity and of dispersion while varying bone properties. The present model is adapted from the generalized self-consistent method developed in the work of Yang and Mal [(1994). "Multiple-scattering of elastic waves in a fiber-reinforced composite," J. Mech. Phys. Solids 42, 1945-1968]. It predicts negative values of velocity dispersion, in agreement with experimental results obtained in phantoms mimicking trabecular bone. In trabecular bone, mostly negative and also positive values of velocity dispersion are predicted by the model, which span within the range of values measured experimentally. Scattering effects are responsible for the negative values of dispersion, whereas the frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient in bone marrow and/or in the trabeculae results in an increase in dispersion, which may then become positive.

Ultrasonic properties of a suspension of microspheres supporting negative group velocities

The ultrasonic attenuation coefficient, phase velocity, and group velocity spectra are reported for a suspension that supports negative group velocities. The suspension consists of plastic microspheres with an average radius of 80 microm in an aqueous medium at a volume fraction of 3%. The spectra are measured using a broadband method covering a range from 2 to 20 MHz. The suspension exhibits negative group delays over a band near 4.5 MHz, with the group velocity magnitude exceeding 4.3 x 10(8) m/s at one point. The causal consistency of these results is confirmed using Kramers-Kronig relations.
