Abstract
OBJECTIVE Exercise adherence and motivation can benefit from technology, but the specific factors influencing these improvements remain unclear. This scoping review aimed to outline the types and features of technology used in exercise prescription within healthcare, focusing on enhancing users' adherence to exercise. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted from January 2000 to February 2023 across Web of Science, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE via PubMed. The review sought studies on technology-based exercise prescriptions for adults ≥ 18 years, evaluating features that enhance motivation or adherence. RESULTS Out of 1724 articles reviewed, 45 met the criteria, demonstrating that mobile applications, exercise gaming, wearable trackers, and websites are commonly used technologies for prescribing exercise in healthcare setting. Common features, special features, and motivating features were found to be important in all technology-based exercise tools to enhance users' adherence and motivation. CONCLUSION This review provides a comprehensive overview of the technological types and approaches that can support and improve exercise adherence among health service users. The findings also emphasize on specific features that can address current gaps in technology-driven fitness interventions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Healthcare professionals should make informed decisions when recommending these tools to health service users, since technology does play a significant role in promoting long-term adherence to exercise programs.

Abstract
Background Physical activity is essential for preventing cognitive decline, stroke and dementia in older adults. A new cardiovascular diagnosis offers a critical window for positive lifestyle changes. However, sustaining physical activity behavior change remains challenging and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Methods To identify the neural, behavioral and contextual predictors of successful longer-term behavior change after a new cardiovascular diagnosis, we used support vector machine learning to predict changes in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity over four years in 295 cognitively unimpaired older adults from the UK Biobank, testing three models that incorporated baseline: (i) demographic, cognitive, and contextual factors, (ii) baseline resting-state functional connectivity alone, and (iii) combined multimodal features across all predictors. Results The combined multi-modal model had the highest predictive power (r=0.28, p=0.001). Key predictors included greenspace access, social support, retirement status, executive function, and between-network functional connectivity within the default mode, frontoparietal control and salience/ventral attention networks. Conclusions These findings underscore the importance of social and structural determinants of health and uncover neural mechanisms that may support lifestyle modifications. In addition to furthering our understanding of the mechanisms underlying successful physical activity behavior change, these findings help to guide the design of interventions and health policy with the ultimate goal of preventing cardiovascular disease burden and late-life cognitive decline.

Abstract
Adopting healthy behaviors is a multifaceted and complex process that poses significant challenges for individuals. Despite awareness of the detrimental effects of certain behaviors on health, many individuals continue to engage in risky practices. Traditional medical advice and prescriptions, while well intentioned, often fall short in fostering lasting lifestyle changes. Although individuals may also have good intentions, solely relying on doctor's counsel does not ensure successful lifestyle adjustments. One primary reason for this limitation is the lack of specialized expertise in behavioral modification among gynecologists and healthcare providers. Health psychologists are specialized professionals capable of effectively guiding and assisting individuals in modifying health-related behaviors. Their expertise in behavior change strategies and psychological interventions proves invaluable in empowering individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles and contributes to people's well-being. This paper emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts between medical professionals, such as gynecologists, and health psychologists to promote healthy behaviors among peri- and postmenopausal women and enhance women's health. By forging integrative alliances, they can develop comprehensive and tailored interventions. By bridging the gap between medical advice and behavior modification, this collaborative effort has the potential to ensure a more effective intervention process. This holistic approach not only addresses women's specific health needs but also fosters sustainable behavior change when promoting healthy behaviors among middle-aged women. The ultimate goal of such a synergy is to improve women's health outcomes and contribute to a healthier society overall.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effect of a synchronous-supervised online home-based exercise program (HBG) during 24 weeks on body composition, physical fitness and adherence compared to an exercise recommendation group (ERG) without supervision with patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. Fifty-nine female breast cancer patients (31 in HBG and 28 in the ERG) undergoing cancer treatments participated in the present randomized clinical trial. The exercise program consisted of a 60 min combined resistance and aerobic supervised exercise session (6-8 points on Borg Scale CR-10, moderate intensity), twice a week during 24 weeks. The exercise recommendation group only received general recommendations to comply with the current ACSM guidelines. Body composition and physical fitness were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks and 24 weeks of the program. Adherence to the intervention was measured according to the minutes of exercise completed per session during each week. A general linear model of two-way repeated measures showed significant improvements (p < 0.05) in physical fitness that were observed in the home-based exercise group at the baseline, 12-week and 24-week assessments compared to the exercise recommendation group. Adherence was also higher in the home-based exercise group. However, no changes (p > 0.05) in body composition between groups and moments were observed. In this sense, supervised home-based exercise interventions can be an interesting strategy to improve physical fitness and adherence rates in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment.

Abstract
Concurrent training has been postulated as an appropriate time-efficient strategy to improve physical fitness, yet whether the exercise-induced adaptations are similar in men and women is unknown. An unblinded randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate sex-specific dose-response effects of a 24-week supervised concurrent exercise training program on cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength in young adults. One hundred and forty-four sedentary adults aged 18-25 years were assigned to either (i) a control group (n = 54), (ii) a moderate intensity exercise group (MOD-EX, n = 46), or (iii) a vigorous intensity exercise group (VIG-EX, n = 44) by unrestricted randomization. Cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max ), hand grip strength, and one-repetition maximum of leg press and bench press were evaluated at baseline and after the intervention. A total of 102 participants finished the intervention (Control, n = 36; 52% women, MOD-EX, n = 37; 70% women, and VIG-EX, n = 36; 72% women). In men, VO2max significantly increased in the MOD-EX (~8%) compared with the control group and in the VIG-EX group after the intervention (~6.5%). In women, VO2max increased in the MOD-EX and VIG-EX groups (~5.5%) compared with the control group after the intervention. There was a significant increment of leg press in the MOD-EX (~15.5%) and VIG-EX (~18%) groups compared with the control group (~1%) in women. A 24-week supervised concurrent exercise was effective at improving cardiorespiratory fitness and lower body limbs muscular strength in young women-independently of the predetermined intensity-while only at moderate intensity improved cardiorespiratory fitness in men.

Abstract
Physical activity during pregnancy is an important health behavior. However, many pregnant individuals are provided with little-to-no guidance to adequately engage in physical activity. The purpose of this quantitative and quasi-qualitative study of currently or previously pregnant women was to examine physical activity behaviors in pregnancy and understand barriers and facilitators to achieving physical activity recommendations. Overall, 431 women (18+ years), White/Caucasian (84.5%), married (84.9%), and currently pregnant (66.6%), completed an online survey study. Most women (69.4%) reported engaging in cardio-based physical activity and willing to engage in physical activity to meet guidelines between 2 and 5 days per week (77.4 -88.8%). The most frequently reported barriers were feeling too tired (72.8%) or uncomfortable (71.8%) and childcare needs (57.8%). Being able to choose time of day (96.0%), accessing home workouts (92.9%), and having a personalized prescription (95.6%) were the most reported facilitators. Open comment feedback resulted in additional barriers, such as ensuring proper energy intake, while motivation and support from other pregnant individuals were fundamental facilitators. Individualized physical activity prescription is lacking in routine prenatal care. To support pregnant individuals to achieve physical activity recommendations, developing a prescription with suitable modalities, at-home options, and consideration for physical activity timing are required.

Abstract
Background Patients with a chronic disease may have an increased risk of non-adherence to prescribed home-based exercise therapy. We performed a systematic review with the aim to identify variables associated with adherence to home-based exercise therapy in patients with chronic diseases and to grade the quality of evidence for the association between these prognostic factors and adherence. Methods Cohort studies, cross-sectional studies and the experimental arm of randomized trials were identified using a search strategy applied to PubMed, Embase, PsychINFO and CINAHL from inception until August 1, 2022. We included studies with participants ≥18 years with a chronic disease as an indication for home-based exercise therapy and providing data on prognostic factors of adherence to home-based exercise. To structure the data, we categorized the identified prognostic factors into the five WHO-domains; (1) Patient-related, (2) Social/economic, (3) Therapy-related, (4) Condition-related, and (5) Health system factors. Risk of bias was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Prognostic factors of adherence were identified and the quality of the evidence between the prognostic factors and adherence were graded using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework for predictor studies. We performed a meta-analysis of the obtained information. Results A total of 57 studies were included. Within patient-related factors moderate- and high-quality evidence suggested that more self-efficacy, exercise history, motivation and perceived behavioral control predicted higher adherence. Within social-economic factors moderate-quality evidence suggested more education and physical health to be predictive of higher adherence and within condition-related factors moderate- and low-quality evidence suggested that less comorbidities, depression and fatigue predicted higher adherence. For the domains therapy-related and health-system factors there was not enough information to determine the quality evidence of the prognostic factors. Conclusion These findings might aid the development of future home-based exercise programs as well as the identification of individuals who may require extra support to benefit from prescribed home-based exercise therapy. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Individual differences in brain structure and function in older adults are potential proxies of brain reserve or maintenance and may provide mechanistic predictions of adherence to exercise. We hypothesized that multimodal neuroimaging features would predict adherence to a 6-month randomized controlled trial of exercise in 131 older adults (age, 65.79 ± 4.65 yr, 63% female), alone and in combination with psychosocial, cognitive, and health measures. METHODS Regularized elastic net regression within a nested cross-validation framework was applied to predict adherence to the intervention in three separate models (brain structure and function only; psychosocial, health, and demographic data only; and a multimodal model). RESULTS Higher cortical thickness in somatosensory and inferior frontal regions and less surface area in primary visual and inferior frontal regions predicted adherence. Higher nodal functional connectivity (degree count) in default, frontoparietal, and attentional networks and less nodal strength in primary visual and temporoparietal networks predicted exercise adherence ( r = 0.24, P = 0.004). Survey and clinical measures of gait and walking self-efficacy, biological sex, and perceived stress also predicted adherence ( r = 0.17, P = 0.056); however, this prediction was not significant when tested against a null test statistic. A combined multimodal model achieved the highest predictive strength ( r = 0.28, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that there is a substantial utility of using brain-based measures in future research into precision and individualized exercise interventions older adults.

Abstract
Background Many technological interventions designed to promote physical activity (PA) have limited efficacy and appear to lack important factors that could increase engagement. This may be due to a discrepancy between research conducted in this space, and software designers' and developers' use of this research to inform new digital applications. Objectives This study aimed to identify (1) what are the variables that act as barriers and facilitators to PA and (2) which PA variables are currently considered in the design of technologies promoting PA including psychological, physical, and personal/contextual ones which are critical in promoting PA. We emphasize psychological variables in this work because of their sparse and often simplistic integration in digital applications for PA. Methods We conducted two systematized reviews on PA variables, using PsycInfo and Association for Computing Machinery Digital Libraries for objectives 1 and 2. Results We identified 38 PA variables (mostly psychological ones) including barriers/facilitators in the literature. 17 of those variables were considered when developing digital applications for PA. Only few studies evaluate PA levels in relation to these variables. The same barriers are reported for all weight groups, though some barriers are stronger in people with obesity. Conclusions We identify PA variables and illustrate the lack of consideration of these in the design of PA technologies. Digital applications to promote PA may have limited efficacy if they do not address variables acting as facilitators or barriers to participation in PA, and that are important to people representing a range of body weight characteristics.

Abstract
Introduction: The rise in armed conflicts has contributed to an increase in the number of asylum seekers. Prolonged asylum processes may negatively affect asylum seekers’ health and lead to inactivity. Studies show that physical activity interventions are associated with improvements in health outcomes. However, there are a limited number of studies investigating the associations of physical activity on asylum seekers’ health. Methods: Participants (263 males and 204 females), mostly from Syria, were assessed before and after a 10-week intervention for VO2 max, body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), body fat, and visceral fat. Linear mixed models were used to test differences within groups, and a linear regression model analysis was performed to test whether physiological variables predicted adherence. Results: Participants’ VO2 max increased: males by 2.96 mL/min/kg and females 2.57 mL/min/kg. Increased SMM percentages were seen in both genders: females by 0.38% and males 0.23%. Visceral fat area decreased: males by 0.73 cm2 and females 5.44 cm2. Conclusions: Participants showed significant increases in VO2 max and SMM and decreased visceral fat. This study provides an insight into asylum seekers’ health and serves as a starting point to new interventions in which physical activity is used as a tool to promote and improve vulnerable populations’ health.

Individuals With Parkinson Disease Are Adherent to a High-Intensity Community-Based Cycling Exercise Program. J Neurol Phys Ther 2021; 46:73-80. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological disorder with no known cure or proven method of slowing progression. High-intensity, laboratory-based aerobic exercise interventions are currently being pursued as candidates for altering disease progression. The aim of this project was to evaluate the translation of a laboratory-based intervention to the community by monitoring exercise adherence (eg, attendance) and intensity (eg, heart rate [HR] and cadence) in 5 established Pedaling for Parkinson's exercise classes. A secondary aim was to determine the impact of disease severity and demographics variables on exercise adherence. METHODS A 12-month pragmatic design was utilized to monitor attendance, HR, and cadence during each Pedaling for Parkinson's class session. Over the course of 1 year, approximately 130 sessions were offered. Forty-nine (n = 30 males) persons with mild to moderate Parkinson disease from 5 community fitness facilities participated. RESULTS Out of the approximately 130 cycling sessions offered at each site over 12 months, 37% of the participants attended greater than 2 classes per week (80-130 total sessions), 47% attended 1 to 1.9 classes per week (40-79 total sessions), and less than 17% attended less than 1 class per week (<40 total sessions). Average pedaling cadence was 74.1 ± 9.6 rpms while average percentage of HR maximum was 68.9 ± 12.0%. There were no significant differences between cycling adherence and intensity variables based on disease severity, age, or sex. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Consistent attendance and exercise performance at moderate to high intensities are feasible in the context of a community-based Pedaling for Parkinson's class. Consistency and intensity of aerobic exercise have been proposed as critical features to elicit potential disease modification benefits associated with exercise. Community-based fitness programs that bring laboratory protocols to the "real world" are a feasible intervention to augment current Parkinson disease treatment approaches. Abstract
BACKGROUND Falls and fall-related injuries are major threats not only for older adults but also for younger age groups such as working-age adults. It has been shown that it is possible to reduce the risk of falls and fall-related injuries, to some extent. However, interventions aiming at reducing both the risk of falls and mitigating fall-related injuries through teaching safe falling techniques are still sparsely investigated. The aim with this study was to investigate the effect of a 10-week workplace-based judo inspired exercise programme (Judo4Balance). The measures in the study include physical functions, fall-related self-efficacy and safe falling techniques. METHODS A total of 142 working-age adults participated in this non-randomised controlled study. The participants were allocated to the Judo4Balance group (n = 79), or to a waiting list control group (n = 63). The mean age was 47 years (18-68). The recruitment period was from May 2018 to October 2019. A total of 128 participants were included in the analysis. Logistic Regression models were used to analyse the outcomes: physical function, balance and fall-related self-efficacy as well as falling techniques (backwards and forwards). RESULTS At the 10-week follow-up, the results displayed significant differences between the two groups in all measurements, except for the fall-related self-efficacy with OR = 1.8. Techniques for falling forwards and backwards displayed the highest OR = 124.1 and OR = 98.9. Physical function and balance showed OR = 3.3 and OR = 6.4. CONCLUSIONS This exercise programme under study displayed significant differences in strength, balance and safe falling techniques between the groups. It is suggested that these functions, which were studied here, can effectively be trained in working-age adults by using the Judo4Balace exercise programme. Thus, it may be beneficial to further investigate and include training in proper falling techniques when designing fall prevention exercise programmes. Furthermore, it may be a novel way of addressing fall-related injuries, which are of utmost importance to prevent in near future. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT04294342 . Abstract
PURPOSE The first aim is to examine adherence to a lower versus higher intensity physical activity (PA) prescription in breast cancer survivors in the Breast Cancer & Physical Activity Level (BC-PAL) Trial. The second aim is to assess associations between baseline characteristics with mean PA adherence in both intervention groups combined. METHODS Forty-five participants were randomized to a 12-week, home-based lower (300 min/week, 40-59% heart rate reserve (HRR)) or higher (150 min/week, 60-80% HRR) intensity PA intervention, or no intervention/control. Both intervention groups received Polar A360® trackers and were included in this analysis (n=30). Study outcomes assessed on a weekly basis with the Polar A360® activity tracker throughout the intervention included relative adherence to the prescribed PA interventions (% of PA prescription goal met), and the absolute amount of PA time ≥40% of HRR. Baseline predictors of adherence included demographic characteristics, cardiorespiratory fitness, habitual PA and sedentary time, quality of life measures, and motivational variables from the Theory of Planned Behavior. For our primary aim, a linear mixed model was used to assess the effects of randomization group, time (intervention weeks 1-12), and the interaction of these factors on the natural logarithm of PA adherence. For our secondary aim, the association between each baseline predictor with the natural logarithm of mean weekly PA adherence was assessed, with randomization group added as a covariate. RESULTS Higher relative time within the prescribed HRR zone was noted in the lower versus higher intensity PA groups (eβ=3.12, 95% CI=1.97, 4.95). No differences in adherence across time were noted. Social support was inversely associated with relative PA time within the prescribed HRR zone (eβ=0.83, 95% CI=0.72, 0.97) and absolute PA time ≥40% of HRR (eβ= 0.82, 95% CI: 0.71, 0.93). Baseline VO2max was inversely associated with relative PA adherence (eβ=0.98, 95% CI=0.95, 0.99). No other baseline measures were associated with PA adherence. CONCLUSIONS There were no significant changes in absolute PA time ≥40% of HRR across time or between groups. However, the lower intensity PA group averaged over 3 times the relative amount of PA within the prescribed HRR zone compared to the higher intensity PA group. Finally, lower peer support and cardiorespiratory fitness at baseline were associated with higher PA adherence. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The recent rise in popularity of commercially available activity trackers provides new opportunities to promote PA participation remotely, and these devices can be used to continuously and objectively measure PA levels as an indicator of intervention adherence. Future studies are needed to explore baseline predictors, facilitators, and barriers to sustained activity tracker use to promote PA behavior change and intervention adherence in cancer survivors. Abstract
Research has suggested that there may be a bidirectional association between stress and physical activity; however, much of this work has been conducted in athletes or adults with normal weight. The current study investigated the bidirectional association between stress and physical activity in adults with overweight and obesity. For a full year, during and after a 12-week, Internet-based weight loss program, 74 participants (BMI = 31.2 kg/m2) were asked to report stress and minutes of physical activity each week. An increase in stress was associated with less physical activity during the same week and predicted fewer minutes of physical activity the following week. Finally, each 1 h increase in physical activity on a given week was associated with a small decrease in stress ratings the following week. Results confirmed the bidirectional association between stress and physical activity in a sample of adults with overweight/obesity, and supported results highlighting stress as a barrier to physical activity. Future studies should investigate whether adding intervention components to decrease stress or to reinforce physical activity can improve physical activity engagement in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In Western countries, falls and fall-related injuries are a well-known threat to health in the aging population. Studies indicate that regular exercise improves strength and balance and can therefore decrease the incidence of falls and fall-related injuries. The challenge, however, is to provide exercise programs that are safe, effective, and attractive to the older population. The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of a home-based exercise program with or without motivational interviewing (MI) compared with standard care on physical performance, fall self-efficacy, balance, activity level, handgrip strength, adherence to the exercise, and fall frequency. METHOD A total of 175 older adults participated in this randomized controlled study. They were randomly allocated for the Otago Exercise Program (OEP) (n = 61), OEP combined with MI (n = 58), or a control group (n = 56). The participants' mean age was 83 years. The recruitment period was from October 2012 to May 2015. Measurements of physical performance, fall self-efficacy, balance, activity level, handgrip strength, adherence to the exercise, and fall frequency were done before and 12 weeks after randomization. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A total of 161 participants were followed up, and there were no significant differences between groups after a period of 12 weeks of regular exercise. Within the OEP + MI group, physical performance, fall self-efficacy, physical activity level, and handgrip strength improved significantly; likewise, improved physical performance and fall self-efficacy were found in the control group. A corresponding difference did not occur in the OEP group. Adherence to the exercise was generally high in both exercise groups. CONCLUSION In the short-term perspective, there were no benefits of an exercise program with or without MI regarding physical performance, fall self-efficacy, activity level, handgrip strength, adherence to the exercise, and fall frequency in comparison to a control group. However, some small effects occurred within the OEP + MI group, indicating that there may be some possible value in behavioral change support combined with exercise in older adults that requires further evaluation in both short- and long-term studies.

Abstract
While short-term high intensity functional training (HIFT) effects have been established, fitness improvements from program participation exceeding 16 weeks are unknown. This study examined the effectiveness of participation in HIFT through CrossFit. During 2013–2014, fitness performance testing was incorporated into an ongoing university CrossFit program. Participants included 45 adults (23 women, 22 men) with 0–27 months of HIFT experience (grouped into 0–6 months and 7+ months). Participants completed three separate days of assessments across 10 fitness domains before and after participating in the program for six months. For each sex, 2 (Time) × 2 (Group) RANOVA were used for each fitness test. For women, significant Time effects were found for four fitness domains (i.e., flexibility, power, muscular endurance, and strength), and a Group × Time interaction for cardiorespiratory endurance, with the 0–6-month group improving more. For men, significant Time effects were found for flexibility, muscular endurance, and strength. These data provide evidence for multiple fitness improvements after six months of CrossFit participation with greater 1.5 mile run time improvement among women with less experience.

Abstract
High-intensity functional training (HIFT) is an exercise modality that emphasizes functional, multi-joint movements that can be modified to any fitness level and elicit greater muscle recruitment than more traditional exercise. As a relatively new training modality, HIFT is often compared to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yet the two are distinct. HIIT exercise is characterized by relatively short bursts of repeated vigorous activity, interspersed by periods of rest or low-intensity exercise for recovery, while HIFT utilizes constantly varied functional exercises and various activity durations that may or may not incorporate rest. Over the last decade, studies evaluating the effectiveness of HIIT programs have documented improvements in metabolic and cardiorespiratory adaptations; however, less is known about the effects of HIFT. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a working definition of HIFT and review the available literature regarding its use to improve metabolic and cardiorespiratory adaptations in strength and conditioning programs among various populations. Additionally, we aim to create a definition that is used in future publications to evaluate more effectively the future impact of this type of training on health and fitness outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify factors associated with weekly adherence to a 12-week tracker-based activity intervention in older adults. METHOD Using generalized linear mixed models in a secondary analysis ( N = 35), we examined factors associated with weekly adherence (defined as wore the Jawbone Up24 tracker for ≥5 days and completed weekly calls). Factors examined included individual characteristics, gave and received virtual support, achieved step goals, barrier and task self-efficacy, and self-comment. RESULTS Participants' ( Mage = 61.7, SDage = 5.7) adherence changed from 86% (Week 1) to 74% (Week 12). Achieved the previous week's goal (β = 1.13, p = .01) and received virtual support (β = 0.01, p = .02) significantly increased the odds of weekly adherence. DISCUSSION Achieved step goals and received virtual support were associated with improved adherence to our tracker-based activity intervention, which has promising potential to be translated into the clinical setting to promote active lifestyles.

Abstract
Background While cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to be effective at improving coronary heart disease (CHD), participation is generally poor. Attempts to increase uptake and adherence often fail. Use of a Facebook intervention for this population may be a unique opportunity to support self-determined motivation and affect adherence. Objective To evaluate the impact of a Facebook intervention on motivation for exercise and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation in patients with CHD during a 12-week, Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program. Methods A prospective, randomized controlled pilot study, grounded in Self-Determination Theory, will be conducted. Participants will be recruited from inpatient, or the intake visit to outpatient, cardiac rehabilitation, and then randomly assigned to the intervention or comparison group. Participants in the intervention group will take part in a private Facebook group. Weekly posts will be designed to support self-determined motivation, measured at baseline and postcardiac rehabilitation by the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-3 (BREQ-3). The Psychological Need Satisfaction for Exercise (PNSE) scale will measure fulfillment of needs that affect motivation. Participants in the comparison group will be given the same materials, but these will be supplied via handouts and email. The number of sessions attended will be tallied and analyzed using t tests. Overall motivation will be evaluated using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models. Multivariate analysis of variance models will be used to evaluate differences in the change across motivation subtypes. If significant, ANCOVA models for each subtype will be fit. ANCOVA models will be used to compare changes in needs satisfaction, overall and separately among the three subscales, between groups. Engagement in the Facebook group will be measured by number of “likes” and self-report of weekly visits to the group. Results This project was funded in July 2017 and recruitment is currently underway. The recruitment goal is 60 cardiac rehabilitation patients. Data collection is anticipated to be complete by July 2018. Conclusions This pilot study will be the first to examine the effect of a Facebook intervention on patient adherence and motivation for exercise in a cardiac rehabilitation setting. Engagement in the Facebook group and participation in the study will help to determine the feasibility of using Facebook to affect adherence and motivation in cardiac rehabilitation patients, potentially improving outcomes through the use of a unique intervention. Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to change the anthropometric, clinical, biochemical indicators and the rate of metabolic syndrome among obese adults in community. BACKGROUND Obesity is an indicator of metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic diseases. Obesity increases national health care expenditure in Taiwan. The high prevalence of obesity is not only a public health issue but also an economic problem. Changes in lifestyle can help to prevent metabolic syndrome for individuals with obesity. DESIGN A randomised controlled trial was applied. METHODS In this randomised controlled trial by location, 136 metabolically abnormal obese individuals were included. The related indicators with metabolic syndrome were measured at baseline and after six months. The experimental group participated in a six-month community-based programme including provided exercise environments, exercise skills and volunteers' reminding. The control group was only provided environment and skills. RESULTS One hundred and thirty-one participants completed this trail. In comparison with the baseline, the intervention group showed a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (2·34 mg/dl), and decrease in body weight (1·09 kg), waist circumference (3·63 cm), systolic blood pressure (10·52 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (5·21 mmHg), fasting blood glucose (5·84 mg/dl) and body mass index (0·74 kg/m(2) ). In the control group, significant decrease in body mass index and waist circumference were discovered. Compared to the changes between the two groups, the results showed there were significant differences in waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS The community-based intervention could help to improve high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, reduce body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose in metabolically abnormal obese. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This community-based programme helped metabolically abnormal obese individuals become metabolically healthy. In the future, community nurses will work with village heads and volunteers. They can encourage residents in the communities to have healthy lifestyle. As a result, the goal of this programme will be successfully achieved with less time and effort.

Abstract
Effective exercise interventions are needed to improve quality of life and decrease the impact of chronic disease. Researchers suggest males have been underrepresented in exercise intervention studies, resulting in less understanding of their exercise practices. Findings from preference survey methods suggest reasonable association between preference and behavior. The purpose of the research described in this article was to use factorial survey, a preference method, to identify the characteristics of exercise interventions most likely to appeal to male participants, so preferences might be incorporated into future intervention research. The research was guided by the framework of Bandura's social cognitive theory, such that variations in individual, environmental, and behavioral factors were incorporated into vignettes. Participants included 53 adult male nonadministrative staff and contract employees at a public university in the Southeastern United States, who each scored 8 vignettes resulting in 423 observations. Multilevel models were used to assess the influence of the factors. Participants scored vignettes that included exercising with a single partner, playing basketball, and exercising in the evening higher than vignettes with other options. Qualitative analysis of an open response item identified additional alternatives in group size, participant desire for coaching support, and interest in programs that incorporate a range of activity alternatives. Findings from this research were consistent with elements of social cognitive theory as applied to health promotion. Factorial surveys potentially provide a resource effective means of identifying participants' preferences for use when planning interventions. The addition of a single qualitative item helped clarify and expand findings from statistical analysis.
