Shock compression response of forsterite above 250 GPa

Imaging velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) diagnostics for high energy density sciences

Two variants of optical imaging velocimetry, specifically the one-dimensional streaked line-imaging and the two-dimensional time-resolved area-imaging versions of the Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector (VISAR), have become important diagnostics in high energy density sciences, including inertial confinement fusion and dynamic compression of condensed matter. Here, we give a brief review of the historical development of these techniques, then describe the current implementations at major high energy density (HED) facilities worldwide, including the OMEGA Laser Facility and the National Ignition Facility. We illustrate the versatility and power of these techniques by reviewing diverse applications of imaging VISARs for gas-gun and laser-driven dynamic compression experiments for materials science, shock physics, condensed matter physics, chemical physics, plasma physics, planetary science and astronomy, as well as a broad range of HED experiments and laser-driven inertial confinement fusion research.

Ultrafast X-Ray Diffraction Visualization of B1-B2 Phase Transition in KCl under Shock Compression

The classical B1(NaCl)↔B2(CsCl) transitions have been considered as a model for general structural phase transformations, and resolving corresponding phase transition mechanisms under high strain rate shock compression is critical to a fundamental understanding of phase transition dynamics. Here, we use subnanosecond synchrotron x-ray diffraction to visualize the lattice response of single-crystal KCl to planar shock compression. Complete B1-B2 orientation relations are revealed for KCl under shock compression along ⟨100⟩_{B1} and ⟨110⟩_{B1}; the orientation relations and transition mechanisms are anisotropic and can be described with the standard and modified Watanabe-Tokonami-Morimoto model, respectively, both involving interlayer sliding and intralayer ion rearrangement. The current study also establishes a paradigm for investigating solid-solid phase transitions under dynamic extremes with ultrafast synchrotron x-ray diffraction.

Ultrafast olivine-ringwoodite transformation during shock compression

Meteorites from interplanetary space often include high-pressure polymorphs of their constituent minerals, which provide records of past hypervelocity collisions. These collisions were expected to occur between kilometre-sized asteroids, generating transient high-pressure states lasting for several seconds to facilitate mineral transformations across the relevant phase boundaries. However, their mechanisms in such a short timescale were never experimentally evaluated and remained speculative. Here, we show a nanosecond transformation mechanism yielding ringwoodite, which is the most typical high-pressure mineral in meteorites. An olivine crystal was shock-compressed by a focused high-power laser pulse, and the transformation was time-resolved by femtosecond diffractometry using an X-ray free electron laser. Our results show the formation of ringwoodite through a faster, diffusionless process, suggesting that ringwoodite can form from collisions between much smaller bodies, such as metre to submetre-sized asteroids, at common relative velocities. Even nominally unshocked meteorites could therefore contain signatures of high-pressure states from past collisions.

Shock-wave-induced nucleation leading to crystallization in water

It is well known that super-cooled materials can be crystallized under the application of shock waves. This is the first report describing crystallization from unsaturated liquids. Shock-wave-induced crystallization of salts from environmental ground and sea water samples is explored. A table-top pressure-driven shock tube is utilized so as to produce the required shock waves of Mach numbers 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 2.2 and 4.7. The demonstration comprises a train of acoustic shock pulses applied to the water samples. As a consequence of the impact of the shock waves, the colourless water becomes turbid, following which tiny crystallites are precipitated at the bottom of the vessel after a few minutes. The obtained precipitate is subjected to powder X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis to confirm the nature of the settled particles and the elements present in them, respectively. From the observed results, it is concluded that shock-wave-induced crystallization in water provides an alternative method for removing dissolved salts from both ground and sea water samples.
