Abstract
Many biological microswimmers are capable of chemotaxis, i.e., they can sense an ambient chemical gradient and adjust their mechanism of motility to move towards or away from the source of the gradient. Synthetic active colloids endowed with chemotactic behavior hold considerable promise for targeted drug delivery and the realization of programmable and reconfigurable materials. Here, we study the chemotactic behavior of a Janus particle, which converts "fuel" molecules, released at an axisymmetric chemical patch located on a planar wall, into "product" molecules at its catalytic cap and moves by self-phoresis induced by the product. The chemotactic behavior is characterized as a function of the interplay between the rates of release (at the patch) and the consumption (at the particle) of fuel, as well as of details of the phoretic response of the particle (i.e., its phoretic mobility). Among other results, we find that, under certain conditions, the particle is attracted to a stable "hovering state" in which it aligns its axis normal to the wall and rests (positions itself) at an activity-dependent distance above the center of the patch.

Abstract
Biological microswimmers alter their swimming trajectories to follow the direction of an applied electric field, exhibiting electrotaxis. We show that synthetic active droplet microswimmers also autonomously change swimming trajectories in microchannels, even undergoing "U-turns," in response to an electric field, mimicking electrotaxis. We exploit such electrotaxis, in the presence of an external flow, to robustly tune the swimming trajectory of active droplets between wall-adjacent, oscillatory, and channel centerline swimming. A general hydrodynamic model demonstrates that the electrotactic dynamics is governed by the electrical effects due to the swimmer's inherent surface charge, besides its motility, hydrodynamic wall interactions, and relative orientations of the electric field and imposed flow. Our study demonstrates a simple method for controlling active agents in complex geometries for microrobotic applications, like autonomous cargo delivery.

Abstract
The generation of fluid flows by autophoretic microswimmers has been proposed as a mechanism to enhance mass transport and mixing at the micro- and nanoscale. Here, we experimentally investigate the ability of model 2D active baths of photocatalytic silica-titania Janus microspheres to enhance the diffusivity of tracer particles at different microswimmer densities below the onset of collective behavior. Inspired by the similarities between our experimental findings and previous results for biological microorganisms, we then model our Janus microswimmers using a general squirmer framework, specifically treating them as neutral squirmers. The numerical simulations faithfully capture our observations, offer an insight into the microscopic mechanism underpinning tracer transport, and allow us to expand the parameter space beyond our experimental system. We find strong evidence that near-field interactions dominate enhancements in tracer diffusivity in active Janus baths, leading to the identification of an operating window for enhanced tracer transport by chemical microswimmers based on scaling arguments. Based on this argumentation, we suggest that for many chemically active colloidal systems, hydrodynamics alone is likely to be insufficient to induce appreciable mixing of passive components with large diffusion coefficients.

Abstract
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the highly malignant brain tumors characterized by significant morbidity and mortality. Despite the recent advancements in the treatment of GBM, major challenges persist in achieving controlled drug delivery to tumors. The management of GBM poses considerable difficulties primarily due to unresolved issues in the blood-brain barrier (BBB)/blood-brain tumor barrier (BBTB) and GBM microenvironment. These factors limit the uptake of anti-cancer drugs by the tumor, thus limiting the therapeutic options. Current breakthroughs in nanotechnology provide new prospects concerning unconventional drug delivery approaches for GBM treatment. Specifically, swimming nanorobots show great potential in active targeted delivery, owing to their autonomous propulsion and improved navigation capacities across biological barriers, which further facilitate the development of GBM-targeted strategies. This review presents an overview of technological progress in different drug administration methods for GBM. Additionally, the limitations in clinical translation and future research prospects in this field are also discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive guideline for researchers and offer perspectives on further development of new drug delivery therapies to combat GBM.

Abstract
Driven by the necessity to achieve a thorough comprehension of the bottom-up fabrication process of functional materials, this experimental study investigates the pairwise interactions or collisions between chemically active SiO2-Pt Janus colloids. These collisions are categorized based on the Janus colloids' orientations before and after they make physical contact. In addition to the hydrodynamic interactions, the Janus colloids are also known to affect each other's chemical field, resulting in chemophoretic interactions, which depend on the degree of surface anisotropy in reactivity of Janus colloid and the solute-surface interaction at play. Our study reveals that these interactions lead to a noticeable decrease in particle speed and changes in orientation that correlate with the contact duration and yield different collision types. Distinct configurations of contact during collisions were found, whose mechanisms and likelihood are found to be dependent primarily on the chemical interactions. Such estimates of collision and their characterization in dilute suspensions shall have a key impact in determining the arrangement and time scales of dynamical structures and assemblies of denser suspensions and potentially the functional materials of the future.

Abstract
The underlying mechanisms and physics of catalytic Janus microswimmers is highly complex, requiring details of the associated phoretic fields and the physiochemical properties of catalyst, particle, boundaries, and the fuel used. Therefore, developing a minimal (and more general) model capable of capturing the overall dynamics of these autonomous particles is highly desirable. In the presented work, we demonstrate that a coarse-grained dissipative particle-hydrodynamics model is capable of describing the behaviour of various chemical microswimmer systems. Specifically, we show how a competing balance between hydrodynamic interactions experienced by a squirmer in the presence of a substrate, gravity, and mass and shape asymmetries can reproduce a range of dynamics seen in different experimental systems. We hope that our general model will inspire further synthetic work where various modes of swimmer motion can be encoded via shape and mass during fabrication, helping to realise the still outstanding goal of microswimmers capable of complex 3-D behaviour.

Abstract
Active systems - including sperm cells, living organisms like bacteria, fish, birds, or active soft matter systems like synthetic "microswimmers" - are characterized by motility, i.e., the ability to propel using their own "engine". Motility is the key feature that distinguishes active systems from passive or externally driven systems. In a large ensemble, motility of individual species can vary in a wide range. Selecting active species according to their motility represents an exciting and challenging problem. We propose a new method for selecting active species based on their motility using an acoustofluidic setup where highly motile species escape from the acoustic trap. This is demonstrated in simulations and in experiments with self-propelled Janus particles and human sperm. The immediate application of this method is selecting highly motile sperm for medically assisted reproduction (MAR). Due to the tunable acoustic trap, the proposed method is more flexible than the existing passive microfluidic methods. The proposed selection method based on motility can also be applied to other active systems that require selecting highly motile species or removing immotile species.

Abstract
Virus infections remain one of the principal causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The current gold standard approach for diagnosing pathogens requires access to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology. However, separation and enrichment of the targets from complex and diluted samples remains a major challenge. In this work, we proposed a micromotor-based sample preparation concept for the efficient separation and concentration of target viral particles before PCR. The micromotors are functionalized with antibodies with a 3D polymer linker and are capable of self-propulsion by the catalytic generation of oxygen bubbles for selective and positive virus enrichment. This strategy significantly improves the enrichment efficiency and recovery rate of virus (up to 80% at 104 tu mL-1 in a 1 mL volume within just 6 min) without external mixing equipment. The method allows the Ct value in regular PCR tests to appear 6-7 cycles earlier and a detection limit of 1 tu mL-1 for the target virus from swap samples. A point-of-need test kit is designed based on the micromotors which can be readily applied to pretreat a large volume of samples.

Abstract
Due to the intrinsically complex non-equilibrium behavior of the constituents of active matter systems, a comprehensive understanding of their collective properties is a challenge that requires systematic bottom-up characterization of the individual components and their interactions. For self-propelled particles, intrinsic complexity stems from the fact that the polar nature of the colloids necessitates that the interactions depend on positions and orientations of the particles, leading to a 2d - 1 dimensional configuration space for each particle, in d dimensions. Moreover, the interactions between such non-equilibrium colloids are generically non-reciprocal, which makes the characterization even more complex. Therefore, derivation of generic rules that enable us to predict the outcomes of individual encounters as well as the ensuing collective behavior will be an important step forward. While significant advances have been made on the theoretical front, such systematic experimental characterizations using simple artificial systems with measurable parameters are scarce. Here, two different contrasting types of colloidal microswimmers are studied, which move in opposite directions and show distinctly different interactions. To facilitate the extraction of parameters, an experimental platform is introduced in which these parameters are confined on a 1D track. Furthermore, a theoretical model for interparticle interactions near a substrate is developed, including both phoretic and hydrodynamic effects, which reproduces their behavior. For subsequent validation, the degrees of freedom are increased to 2D motion and resulting trajectories are predicted, finding remarkable agreement. These results may prove useful in characterizing the overall alignment behavior of interacting self-propelling active swimmer and may find direct applications in guiding the design of active-matter systems involving phoretic and hydrodynamic interactions.

Abstract
The ability to steer micromotors in specific directions and at precise speeds is highly desired for their use in complex environments. However, a generic steering strategy that can be applied to micromotors of all types and surface coatings is yet to be developed. Here, we report that ultrasound of ∼100 kHz can spin a spherical micromotor so that it turns left or right when moving forward, or that it moves in full circles. The direction and angular speeds of their spinning and the radii of circular trajectories are precisely tunable by varying ultrasound voltages and frequencies, as well as particle properties such as its radius, materials, and coating thickness. Such spinning is hypothesized to originate from the circular microstreaming flows localized around a solid microsphere vibrating in ultrasound. In addition to causing a micromotor to spin, such streaming flows also helped release cargos from a micromotor during a capture-transport-release mission. Localized microstreaming does not depend on or interference with a specific propulsion mechanism and can steer a wide variety of micromotors. This work suggests that ultrasound can be used to steer microrobots in complex, biologically relevant environments as well as to steer microorganisms and cells.

Abstract
This article provides a review of the recent development of biomimicking behaviors in active colloids. While the behavior of biological microswimmers is undoubtedly influenced by physics, it is frequently guided and manipulated by active sensing processes. Understanding the respective influences of the surrounding environment can help to engineering the desired response also in artificial swimmers. More often than not, the achievement of biomimicking behavior requires the understanding of both biological and artificial microswimmers swimming mechanisms and the parameters inducing mechanosensory responses. The comparison of both classes of microswimmers provides with analogies in their dependence on fuels, interaction with boundaries and stimuli induced motion, or taxis.

Abstract
Inspired by natural mobile microorganisms, researchers have developed micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that can autonomously move by transducing different kinds of energies into kinetic energy. The rapid development of MNMs has created tremendous opportunities for biomedical fields including diagnostics, therapeutics, and theranostics. Although the great progress has been made in MNM research, at a fundamental level, the accepted propulsion mechanisms are still a controversial matter. In practical applications such as precision nanomedicine, the precise control of the motion, including the speed and directionality, of MNMs is also important, which makes advanced motion manipulation desirable. Very recently, diverse MNMs with different propulsion strategies, morphologies, sizes, porosities and chemical structures have been fabricated and applied for various uses. Herein, we thoroughly summarize the physical principles behind propulsion strategies, as well as the recent advances in motion manipulation methods and relevant biomedical applications of these MNMs. The current challenges in MNM research are also discussed. We hope this review can provide a bird's eye overview of the MNM research and inspire researchers to create novel and more powerful MNMs.

Abstract
The emergence of large-scale collective phenomena from simple interactions between individual units is a hallmark of active matter systems. Active colloids with alignment-dominated interparticle interactions tend to develop orientational order and form motile coherent states, such as flocks and swarms. Alternatively, a combination of self-propulsion and excluded-volume interactions results in self-trapping and active phase separation into dense clusters. Here, we reveal unconventional arrested-motility states in ensembles of active discoidal particles powered by induced-charge electrophoresis. Combining experiments and computational modeling, we demonstrate that the shape asymmetry of the particles promotes the hydrodynamically assisted formation of active particles' bound states in a certain range of excitation parameters, ultimately leading to a spontaneous collective state with arrested motility. Unlike the jammed clusters obtained through self-trapping, the arrested-motility phase remains sparse, dynamic, and reconfigurable. The demonstrated mechanism of phase separation seeded by bound state formation in ensembles of oblate active particles is generic and should be applicable to other active colloidal systems.

Abstract
Understanding and controlling the swimming direction of a synthetic nano- and micromotor holds fundamental and applied significance. Here, we focus on platinum-containing Janus colloids that catalytically decompose H2 O2 into O2 , an archetypical model of chemical micromotor. We discover that platinum oxides (primarily PtO) are produced on Pt films sputter-coated in O2 plasma, and PtO reverses the motor possibly by self-electrophoresis. Using this knowledge, micromotors moving in either direction were fabricated by intentionally introducing or removing PtO. These findings challenge the conventional wisdom that a Pt micromotor is powered by Pt alone, and open up new avenues for controlling the swimming directions of a micro- and nanomachine.

Abstract
Biological microswimmers navigate upstream of an external flow with trajectories ranging from linear to spiralling and oscillatory. Such a rheotactic response primarily stems from the hydrodynamic interactions triggered by the complex shapes of the microswimmers, such as flagellar chirality. We show here that a self-propelling droplet exhibits oscillatory rheotaxis in a microchannel, despite its simple spherical geometry. Such behaviour has been previously unobserved in artificial swimmers. Comparing our experiments to a purely hydrodynamic theory model, we demonstrate that the oscillatory rheotaxis of the droplet is primarily governed by both the shear flow characteristics and the interaction of the finite-sized microswimmer with all four microchannel walls. The dynamics can be controlled by varying the external flow strength, even leading to the rheotactic trapping of the oscillating droplet. Our results provide a realistic understanding of the behaviour of active particles navigating in confined microflows relevant in many biotechnology applications.

Abstract
The ability of artificial microswimmers to respond to external stimuli and the mechanistical details of their origins belong to the most disputed challenges in interdisciplinary science. Therein, the creation of chemical gradients is technically challenging, because they quickly level out due to diffusion. Inspired by pivotal stopped flow experiments in chemical kinetics, we show that microfluidics gradient generation combined with a pressure feedback loop for precisely controlling the stop of the flows, can enable us to study mechanistical details of chemotaxis of artificial Janus micromotors, based on a catalytic reaction. We find that these copper Janus particles display a chemotactic motion along the concentration gradient in both, positive and negative direction and we demonstrate the mechanical reaction of the particles to unbalanced drag forces, explaining this behaviour.

Abstract
As a novel mobile nanodevice, micro-nano motors (MNMs) can convert the energy of the surrounding environment into mechanical motion. With this unique ability, they promise revolutionary potential in bio-applications including precise drug delivery, bio-sensing, and noninvasive surgery. Yet for practically reaching the target and fulfilling these tasks in dynamically changing bio-environment, environment adaptivity beyond propulsion is important yet challenging. MNMs with taxis behavior/autonomous target-seeking ability offer a desirable solution. These motors can adaptively move to the target location and complete the task. Thanks to the persistent efforts of researchers, tactic MNMs have shown automatic navigation to target under various energy fields, not only in static environments, but also in shear rheological conditions that simulate blood flow. Therefore, tactic motors with self-targeting capability lay a concrete foundation for targeted drug delivery, cell transplantation, and thrombus ablation. This review systematically presents the moving principle, design, and biological applications of tactic MNMs under different energy fields. Through in-depth analysis of state-of-art progress, the obstacles of the field and possible solutions are discussed. With the continuous innovation and breakthroughs of multi-disciplinary researchers, MNMs with taxis behavior are expected to provide a revolutionary solution for cancer and other major diseases in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Fluid flow is ubiquitous in many environments that form habitats for microorganisms. Therefore, it is not surprising that both biological and artificial microswimmers show responses to flows that are determined by the interplay of chemical and physical factors. In particular, to deepen the understanding of how different systems respond to flows, it is crucial to comprehend the influence played by swimming pattern. The tendency of organisms to navigate up or down the flow is termed rheotaxis. Early theoretical studies predicted a positive rheotactic response for puller-type spherical Janus micromotors. However, recent experimental studies have focused on pusher-type Janus particles, finding that they exhibit cross-stream migration in externally applied flows. To study the response to the flow of swimmers with a qualitatively different flow pattern, we introduce Cu@SiO2 micromotors that swim toward their catalytic cap. On the basis of experimental observations, and supported by flow field calculations using a model for self-electrophoresis, we hypothesize that they behave effectively as a puller-type system. We investigate the effect of externally imposed flow on these spherically symmetrical Cu@SiO2 active Janus colloids, and we indeed observe a steady upstream directional response. Through a simple squirmer model for a puller, we recover the major experimental observations. Additionally, the model predicts a "jumping" behavior for puller-type micromotors at high flow speeds. Performing additional experiments at high flow speeds, we capture this phenomenon, in which the particles "roll" with their swimming axes aligned to the shear plane, in addition to being dragged downstream by the fluid flow.

Abstract
Understanding the motion of artificial active swimmers in complex surroundings, such as a dense bath of passive particulate matter, is essential for their successful utilization as cargo (drug) carriers and sensors or for medical imaging, under microscopic domains. In this study, we experimentally investigated the motion of active SiO2-Pt Janus particles (JPs) in a two-dimensional bath of smaller silica tracers dispersed with varying areal densities. Our observations indicate that when an active JP undergoes a collision with an isolated tracer, their interaction can have a significant impact on the swimmer's motion. However, the overall impact of tracers on the active JPs' motion (translation and rotation) depends on the frequency of collisions and also on the nature of the collision, which is marked by the time-duration for which the particles maintain contact during the collisions. Further, in the high-density tracer bath, our experiments reveal that the motion of the active JP results in a novel organizational behavior of the tracers on the trailing Pt (depletion of tracers) and the leading SiO2 (accumulation of tracers) side. In laboratory frame the emergence and the subsequent vanishing of the depletion zone are discussed in detail.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive study of active filaments confined in a cylindrical channel under Poiseuille flow. The activity drives the filament towards the channel boundary, whereas external fluid flow migrates the filament away from the boundary. This migration further shifts towards the centre for higher flow strength. The migration behaviour of the filaments is presented in terms of the alignment order parameter that shows the alignment grows with shear and activity. Further, we have also addressed the role of length of filament on the migration behaviour, which suggests higher migration for larger filaments. Moreover, we discuss the polar ordering of filaments as a function of distance from the centre of channel that displays upstream motion near the boundary and downstream motion at the centre of the tube.

Abstract
Colloidal micromotors can autonomously propel due to their broken symmetry that leads to unbalanced local mechanical forces. Most commonly, micromotors are synthesized to possess a Janus structure or its variants, having two components distinct in shape, composition, or surface joined together on opposite sides. Here, we report on an alternative approach for creating micromotors, where microcrystals of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with various polyhedral shapes are propelled under an AC electric field. In these cases, symmetry breaking is realized by orienting the polyhedral particles in a unique direction to generate uneven electrohydrodynamic flow. The particle orientations are controlled by a delicate competition between the electric and gravitational forces exerted on the particle, which we rationalize using experiments and a theoretical model. Furthermore, by leveraging the MOF types and shapes, or surface properties, we show that the propulsion of MOF motors can be tuned or reversed. Because of the flexibility in designing MOFs and their one-step scalable synthesis, our strategy is simple yet versatile for making well-defined functional micromotors.

Abstract
A popular principle in designing chemical micromachines is to take advantage of asymmetric chemical reactions such as the catalytic decomposition of H2O2. Contrary to intuition, we use Janus micromotors half-coated with platinum (Pt) or catalase as an example to show that this ingredient is not sufficient in powering a micromotor into self-propulsion. In particular, by annealing a thin Pt film on a SiO2 microsphere, the resulting microsphere half-decorated with discrete Pt nanoparticles swims ∼80% more slowly than its unannealed counterpart in H2O2, even though they both catalytically produce comparable amounts of oxygen. Similarly, SiO2 microspheres half-functionalized with the enzyme catalase show negligible self-propulsion despite high catalytic activity toward decomposing H2O2. In addition to highlighting how surface morphology of a catalytic cap enables/disables a chemical micromotor, this study offers a refreshed perspective in understanding how chemistry powers nano- and microscopic objects (or not): our results are consistent with a self-electrophoresis mechanism that emphasizes the electrochemical decomposition of H2O2 over nonelectrochemical pathways. More broadly, our finding is a critical piece of the puzzle in understanding and designing nano- and micromachines, in developing capable model systems of active colloids, and in relating enzymes to active matter.

Abstract
Chemically active Janus particles generate tangential concentration gradients along their surface for self-propulsion. Although this is well studied in unbounded domains, the analysis in biologically relevant environments such as confinement is scarce. In this work, we study the motion of a Janus sphere in weak confinement. The particle is placed at an arbitrary location, with arbitrary orientation between the two walls. Using the method of reflections, we study the effect of confining planar boundaries on the phoretic and hydrodynamic interactions, and their consequence on the Janus particle dynamics. The dynamical trajectories are analyzed using phase diagrams for different surface coverage of activity and solute-particle interactions. In addition to near wall states such as 'sliding' and 'hovering', we demonstrate that accounting for two planar boundaries reveals two new states: channel-spanning oscillations and damped oscillations around the centerline, which were characterized as 'scattering' or 'reflection' by earlier analyses on single wall interactions. Using phase-diagrams, we highlight the differences in inert-facing and active-facing Janus particles. We also compare the dynamics of Janus particles with squirmers for contrasting the chemical interactions with hydrodynamic effects. Insights from the current work suggest that biological and artificial swimmers sense their surroundings through long-ranged interactions, that can be modified by altering the surface properties.

Abstract
This paper provides an updated review of recent advances in microfluidics applied to artificial and biohybrid microswimmers. Sharing the common regime of low Reynolds number, the two fields have been brought together to take advantage of the fluid characteristics at the microscale, benefitting microswimmer research multifold. First, microfluidics offer simple and relatively low-cost devices for high-fidelity production of microswimmers made of organic and inorganic materials in a variety of shapes and sizes. Microscale confinement and the corresponding fluid properties have demonstrated differential microswimmer behaviors in microchannels or in the presence of various types of physical or chemical stimuli. Custom environments to study these behaviors have been designed in large part with the help of microfluidics. Evaluating microswimmers in increasingly complex lab environments such as microfluidic systems can ensure more effective implementation for in-field applications. The benefits of microfluidics for the fabrication and evaluation of microswimmers are balanced by the potential use of microswimmers for sample manipulation and processing in microfluidic systems, a large obstacle in diagnostic and other testing platforms. In this review various ways in which these two complementary technology fields will enhance microswimmer development and implementation in various fields are introduced.

Abstract
Chemically active Janus particles sustain non-equilibrium spatial variations in the chemical composition of the suspending solution; these induce hydrodynamic flow and (self-)motility of the particles. Direct mapping of these fields has so far proven to be too challenging. Therefore, indirect methods are needed, e.g., deconvolving the response of "tracer" particles to the activity-induced fields. Here, we study experimentally the response of silica particles, sedimented at a wall, to active Pt/silica Janus particles. The latter are either immobilized at the wall, with the symmetry axis perpendicular or parallel to the wall, or motile. The experiments reveal complex effective interactions that are dependent on the configuration and on the state of motion of the active particle. Within the framework of a coarse-grained model, the behavior of tracers near an immobilized Janus particle can be captured qualitatively once activity-induced osmotic flows on the wall are considered.

Abstract
Biohybrid robotics is a field in which biological entities are combined with artificial materials in order to obtain improved performance or features that are difficult to mimic with hand-made materials. Three main level of integration can be envisioned depending on the complexity of the biological entity, ranging from the nanoscale to the macroscale. At the nanoscale, enzymes that catalyze biocompatible reactions can be used as power sources for self-propelled nanoparticles of different geometries and compositions, obtaining rather interesting active matter systems that acquire importance in the biomedical field as drug delivery systems. At the microscale, single enzymes are substituted by complete cells, such as bacteria or spermatozoa, whose self-propelling capabilities can be used to transport cargo and can also be used as drug delivery systems, for in vitro fertilization practices or for biofilm removal. Finally, at the macroscale, the combinations of millions of cells forming tissues can be used to power biorobotic devices or bioactuators by using muscle cells. Both cardiac and skeletal muscle tissue have been part of remarkable examples of untethered biorobots that can crawl or swim due to the contractions of the tissue and current developments aim at the integration of several types of tissue to obtain more realistic biomimetic devices, which could lead to the next generation of hybrid robotics. Tethered bioactuators, however, result in excellent candidates for tissue models for drug screening purposes or the study of muscle myopathies due to their three-dimensional architecture. Abstract
Self-propelled micro- and nanomotors (MNMs) have shown great potential for applications in the biomedical field, such as active targeted delivery, detoxification, minimally invasive diagnostics, and nanosurgery, owing to their tiny size, autonomous motion, and navigation capacities. To enter the clinic, biomedical MNMs request the biodegradability of their manufacturing materials, the biocompatibility of chemical fuels or externally physical fields, the capability of overcoming various biological barriers (e.g., biofouling, blood flow, blood-brain barrier, cell membrane), and the in vivo visual positioning for autonomous navigation. Herein, the recent advances of synthetic MNMs in overcoming biological barriers and in vivo motion-tracking imaging techniques are highlighted. The challenges and future research priorities are also addressed. With continued attention and innovation, it is believed that, in the future, biomedical MNMs will pave the way to improve the targeted drug delivery efficiency.

Abstract
The ability to propel against flows, i.e., to perform positive rheotaxis, can provide exciting opportunities for applications in targeted therapeutics and non-invasive surgery. To date, no biocompatible technologies exist for navigating microparticles upstream when they are in a background fluid flow. Inspired by many naturally- occurring microswimmers such as bacteria, spermatozoa, and plankton that utilize the non-slip boundary conditions of the wall to exhibit upstream propulsion, here, we report on the design and characterization of self-assembled microswarms that can execute upstream motility in a combination of external acoustic and magnetic fields. Both acoustic and magnetic fields are safe to humans, non-invasive, can penetrate deeply into the human body, and are well-developed in clinical settings. The combination of both fields can overcome the limitations encountered by single actuation methods. The design criteria of the acoustically-induced reaction force of the microswarms, which is needed to perform rolling-type motion, are discussed. We show quantitative agreement between experimental data and our model that captures the rolling behaviour. The upstream capability provides a design strategy for delivering small drug molecules to hard-to-reach sites and represents a fundamental step toward the realization of micro- and nanosystem-navigation against the blood flow.

Abstract
To fully harness the potential of artificial active colloids, investigation of their response to various external stimuli including external flow is of great interest. Therefore, in this study, we perform experiments on SiO2-Pt Janus particles suspended in an aqueous medium in a capillary subjected to different shear flow rates. Particles were propelled using varied H2O2 (fuel) concentrations. For a particular propulsion speed, with increasing shear flow, a continuous transition in the motion of active Janus particles (JPs) from the usual random active motion to preferential movement along the vorticity direction and then finally to migration along the flow was observed. This transition was accompanied by a significant decline in in-plane fluctuations of the particle trajectories. Another key observation is that the activity of JPs produces a delay in shear-induced rolling, which at moderate flow, allows the JPs to adopt a specific orientation, facilitating their migration along the vorticity direction. At higher flow rates, once shear flow overcomes the activity-induced resistance and initiates rolling, the probability of JPs adopting such preferred orientations reduces. Our analysis further revealed that these transitions are governed by a nondimensional quantity λ, which compares the relative strength of the shear-induced particle flow to the propulsion speed.

Abstract
Enzyme-powered motors self-propel through the catalysis of in situ bioavailable fuels, which makes them excellent candidates for biomedical applications. However, fundamental issues like their motion in biological fluids and the understanding of the propulsion mechanism are critical aspects to be tackled before a future application in biomedicine. Herein, we investigated the physicochemical effects of ionic species on the self-propulsion of urease-powered micromotors. Results showed that the presence of PBS, NaOH, NaCl, and HEPES reduced self-propulsion of urease-powered micromotors pointing towards ion-dependent mechanisms of motion. We studied the 3D motion of urease micromotors using digital holographic microscopy to rule out any motor-surface interaction as the cause of motion decay when salts are present in the media. In order to protect and minimize the negative effect of ionic species on micromotors' performance, we coated the motors with methoxypolyethylene glycol amine (mPEG) showing higher speed compared to noncoated motors at intermediate ionic concentrations. These results provide new insights into the mechanism of urease-powered micromotors, study the effect of ionic media, and contribute with potential solutions to mitigate the reduction of mobility of enzyme-powered micromotors.

Abstract
Chemically active particles achieve motility without external forces and torques ("self-propulsion") due to catalytic chemical reactions at their surfaces, which change the chemical composition of the surrounding solution (called "chemical field") and induce hydrodynamic flow of the solution. By coupling the distortions of these fields back to its motion, a chemically active particle experiences an effective interaction with confining surfaces. This coupling can lead to a rich behavior, such as the occurrence of wall-bound steady states of "sliding". Most active particles are density mismatched with the solution and, thus, tend to sediment. Moreover, the often employed Janus spheres, which consist of an inert core material decorated with a cap-like, thin layer of a catalyst, are gyrotactic (i.e., "bottom-heavy"). Whether or not they may exhibit sliding states at horizontal walls depends on the interplay between the active motion and the gravity-driven sedimentation and alignment, such as the gyrotactic tendency to align the axis along the gravity direction being overcome by a competing, activity-driven alignment with a different orientation. It is therefore important to understand and quantify the influence of these gravity-induced effects on the behavior of model chemically active particles moving in the vicinity of walls. For model gyrotactic, self-phoretic Janus particles, here we study theoretically the occurrence of sliding states at horizontal planar walls that are either below ("floor") or above ("ceiling") the particle. We construct "state diagrams" characterizing the occurrence of such states as a function of the sedimentation velocity and of the gyrotactic response of the particle, as well as of the phoretic mobility of the particle. We show that in certain cases sliding states may emerge simultaneously at both the ceiling and the floor, while the larger part of the experimentally relevant parameter space corresponds to particles that would exhibit sliding states only either at the floor or at the ceiling-or there are no sliding states at all. These predictions are critically compared with the results of previous experimental studies, as well as with our dedicated experiments carried out with Pt-coated, polystyrene-core, or silica-core Janus spheres immersed in aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions.

Abstract
Chemically active particles suspended in a liquid solution can achieve self-motility by locally changing the chemical composition of the solution via catalytic reactions at their surfaces. They operate intrinsically out of equilibrium, continuously extracting free energy from the environment to power the dissipative self-motility. The effective interactions involving active particles are, in general, nonreciprocal and anisotropic, even if the particles have simple shapes (e.g., Janus spheres). Accordingly, for chemically active particles a very rich behavior of collective motion and self-assembly may be expected to emerge, including phenomena such as microphase separation in the form of kinetically stable, finite-sized aggregates. Here, I succinctly review a number of recent experimental studies that demonstrate the self-assembly of structures, involving chemically active Janus particles, which exhibit various patterns of motion. These examples illustrate concepts such as "motors made out of motors" (as suggestively named by Fischer [Fischer, P. Nat. Phys. 2018, 14, 1072]). The dynamics of assembly and structure formation observed in these systems can provide benchmark, in-depth testing of the current understanding of motion and effective interactions produced by chemical activity. Finally, one notes that these significant achievements are likely just the beginning of the field. Recently reported particles endowed with time-dependent chemical activity or switchable reaction mechanisms open the way for exciting developments, such as periodic reshaping of self-assembled structures based on man-made internal clocks.

Abstract
We study the steady-state behavior of active, dipolar, Brownian spheroids in a planar channel subjected to an imposed Couette flow and an external transverse field, applied in the "downward" normal-to-flow direction. The field-induced torque on active spheroids (swimmers) is taken to be of magnetic form by assuming that they have a permanent magnetic dipole moment, pointing along their self-propulsion (swim) direction. Using a continuum approach, we show that a host of behaviors emerges over the parameter space spanned by the particle aspect ratio, self-propulsion and shear/field strengths, and the channel width. The cross-stream migration of the model swimmers is shown to involve a regime of linear response (quantified by a linear-response factor) in weak fields. For prolate swimmers, the weak-field behavior crosses over to a regime of full swimmer migration to the bottom half of the channel in strong fields. For oblate swimmers, a counterintuitive regime of reverse migration arises in intermediate fields, where a macroscopic fraction of swimmers reorient and swim to the top channel half at an acute "upward" angle relative to the field axis. The diverse behaviors reported here are analyzed based on the shear-induced population splitting (bimodality) of the swim orientation, giving two distinct, oppositely polarized, swimmer subpopulations (albeit very differently for prolate/oblate swimmers) in each channel half. In strong fields, swimmers of both types exhibit net upstream currents relative to the laboratory frame. The onsets of full migration and net upstream current depend on the aspect ratio, enabling efficient particle separation strategies in microfluidic setups.

Abstract
Synthetic active colloids that harvest energy stored in the environment and swim autonomously are a popular model system for active matter. This emerging field of research sits at the intersection of materials chemistry, soft matter physics, and engineering, and thus cross-talk among researchers from different backgrounds becomes critical yet difficult. To facilitate this interdisciplinary communication, and to help soft matter physicists with choosing the best model system for their research, we here present a tutorial review article that describes, in appropriate detail, six experimental systems of active colloids commonly found in the physics literature. For each type, we introduce their background, material synthesis and operating mechanisms and notable studies from the soft matter community, and comment on their respective advantages and limitations. In addition, the main features of each type of active colloid are summarized into two useful tables. As materials chemists and engineers, we intend for this article to serve as a practical guide, so those who are not familiar with the experimental aspects of active colloids can make more informed decisions and maximize their creativity.

Abstract
We study, by means of an exact analytical solution, the motion of a spheroidal, axisymmetric squirmer in an unbounded fluid, as well as the low Reynolds number hydrodynamic flow associated to it. In contrast to the case of a spherical squirmer-for which, e.g. the velocity of the squirmer and the magnitude of the stresslet associated with the flow induced by the squirmer are respectively determined by the amplitudes of the first two slip ('squirming') modes-for the spheroidal squirmer each squirming mode either contributes to the velocity, or contributes to the stresslet. The results are straightforwardly extended to the self-phoresis of axisymmetric, spheroidal, chemically active particles in the case when the phoretic slip approximation holds.

Abstract
Micro/nanomotors have been extensively explored for efficient cancer diagnosis and therapy, as evidenced by significant breakthroughs in the design of micro/nanomotors-based intelligent and comprehensive biomedical platforms. Here, we demonstrate the recent advances of micro/nanomotors in the field of cancer-targeted delivery, diagnosis, and imaging-guided therapy, as well as the challenges and problems faced by micro/nanomotors in clinical applications. The outlook for the future development of micro/nanomotors toward clinical applications is also discussed. We hope to highlight these new advances in micro/nanomotors in the field of cancer diagnosis and therapy, with the ultimate goal of stimulating the successful exploration of intelligent micro/nanomotors for future clinical applications.

Abstract
Self-assembly of colloids provides a powerful way for the construction of complex multi-scale materials. Microfluidic techniques possess great potential to precisely control the assembly of micro- and nano-scale building blocks via the rational design of various microfluidic environments. In this review, we first discuss the self-assembly of colloids without templates by using the laminar microfluidic technique. The self-assembly of colloids based on a droplet as a template was subsequently summarized and discussed via droplet microfluidic technique. Moreover, the evaporation-driven self-assembly of colloids in microfluidic channels has been discussed and analysed. Finally, the representative applications in this field have been pointed out. The aim of this review is to summarize the state-of-art on the self-assembly of colloids based on various microfluidic techniques, exhibit their representative applications, and point out the current challenges in this field, hoping to inspire and guide future work.

Abstract
Cells navigate through complex surroundings by following cues from their environment. A prominent example is Dictyostelium, which is directed by chemotaxis towards regions with higher concentrations. In the presence of traveling chemical waves, however, amoebae migrate counter to the running wave. Such behavior, referred to as diffusing wave paradox, suggests the existence of adaptation and directional memory. Here we experimentally investigate the response of phototactic self-propelled microparticles to traveling light-pulses. Despite their entirely memory-less (i.e., strictly local) response to the environment, we observe the same phenomenological behavior, i.e., particle motion counter to the pulse direction. Our findings are supported by a minimal model which considers active particle reorientations within local light gradients. The complex and robust behavior of synthetic active particles to spatially and temporally varying stimuli enables new strategies for achieving collective behavior and can be used for the design of micro-robotic systems with limited signal-processing capabilities.

Abstract
To navigate in complex fluid environments, swimming organisms like fish or bacteria often reorient their bodies antiparallel or against the flow, more commonly known as rheotaxis. This reorientation motion enables the organisms to migrate against the fluid flow, as observed in salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Rheotaxis can also be realized in artificial microswimmers - self-propelled particles that mimic swimming microorganisms. Here we study experimentally and by computer simulations the rheotaxis of self-propelled gold-platinum nanorods in microfluidic channels. We observed two distinct modes of artificial rheotaxis: a high shear domain near the bottom wall of the microfluidic channel and a low shear regime in the corners. Reduced fluid drag in the corners promotes the formation of many particle aggregates that rheotax collectively. Our study provides insight into the biomimetic functionality of artificial self-propelled nanorods for dynamic self-assembly and the delivery of payloads to targeted locations.

Abstract
The steady-state behavior of a dilute suspension of self-propelled filaments confined between planar walls subjected to Couette-flow is reported herein. The effect of hydrodynamics has been taken into account using a mesoscale simulation approach. We present a detailed analysis of positional and angular probability distributions of filaments with varying propulsive force and shear-flow. The distribution of the centre-of-mass of the filament shows adsorption near the surfaces, which diminishes with the flow. The excess density of filaments decreases with Weissenberg number as Wi-β with an exponent β ≈ 0.8, in the intermediate shear range (1 < Wi < 30). The angular orientational moment also decreases near the wall as Wi-δ with δ ≈ 1/5; the variation in orientational moment near the wall is relatively slower than the bulk. It shows a strong dependence on the propulsive force near the wall, with variation on force as Pe-1/3 for large Pe ≥ 1. The active filament shows orientational preference with flow near the surfaces, which splits into upstream and downstream swimming. The population splitting from a unimodal (propulsive force dominated regime) to bimodal phase (shear dominated regime) is identified in the parameter space of propulsive force and shear flow.

Abstract
We study the dynamics of active Janus particles that self-propel in solution by light-activated catalytic decomposition of chemical "fuel." We develop an analytical model of a photo-active self-phoretic particle that accounts for "self-shadowing" of the light by the opaque catalytic face of the particle. We find that self-shadowing can drive "phototaxis" (rotation of the catalytic cap toward the light source) or "anti-phototaxis," depending on the properties of the particle. Incorporating the effect of thermal noise, we show that the distribution of particle orientations is captured by a Boltzmann distribution with a nonequilibrium effective potential. Furthermore, the mean vertical velocity of phototactic (anti-phototactic) particles exhibits a superlinear (sublinear) dependence on intensity. Overall, our findings show that photo-active particles exhibit a rich "tactic" response to light, which could be harnessed to program complex three-dimensional trajectories.

Abstract
Chemically active colloids can achieve force- and torque-free motility ("self-propulsion") via the promotion, on their surface, of catalytic chemical reactions involving the surrounding solution. Such systems are valuable both from a theoretical perspective, serving as paradigms for nonequilibrium processes, as well as from an application viewpoint, according to which active colloids are envisioned to play the role of carriers ("engines") in novel lab-on-a-chip devices. The motion of such colloids is intrinsically connected with a "chemical field", i.e., the distribution near the colloid of the number densities of the various chemical species present in the solution, and with the hydrodynamic flow of the solution around the particle. In most of the envisioned applications, and in virtually all reported experimental studies, the active colloids operate under spatial confinement (e.g., within a microfluidic channel, a drop, a free-standing liquid film, etc.). In such cases, the chemical field and the hydrodynamic flow associated with an active colloid are influenced by any nearby confining surfaces, and these disturbances couple back to the particle. Thus, an effective interaction with the spatial confinement arises. Consequently, the particle is endowed with means to perceive and to respond to its environment. Understanding these effective interactions, finding the key parameters which control them, and designing particles with desired, preconfigured responses to given environments, require interdisciplinary approaches which synergistically integrate methods and knowledge from physics, chemistry, engineering, and materials science. Here we review how, via simple models of chemical activity and self-phoretic motion, progress has recently been made in understanding the basic physical principles behind the complex behaviors exhibited by active particles near interfaces. First, we consider the occurrence of "interface-bounded" steady states of chemically active colloids near simple, nonresponsive interfaces. Examples include particles "sliding" along, or "hovering" above, a hard planar wall while inducing hydrodynamic flow of the solution. These states lay the foundations for concepts like the guidance of particles by the topography of the wall. We continue to discuss responsive interfaces: a suitable chemical patterning of a planar wall allows one to bring the particles into states of motion which are spatially localized (e.g., within chemical stripes or along chemical steps). These occur due to the wall responding to the activity-induced chemical gradients by generating osmotic flows, which encode the surface-chemistry of the wall. Finally, we discuss how, via activity-induced Marangoni stresses, long-ranged effective interactions emerge from the strong hydrodynamic response of fluid interfaces. These examples highlight how in this context a desired behavior can be potentially selected by tuning suitable parameters (e.g., the phoretic mobility of the particle, or the strength of the Marangoni stress at an interface). This can be accomplished via a judicious design of the surface chemistry of the particle and of the boundary, or by the choice of the chemical reaction in solution.

Abstract
Various aspects of self-motility of chemically active colloids in Newtonian fluids can be captured by simple models for their chemical activity plus a phoretic-slip hydrodynamic boundary condition on their surface. For particles of simple shapes (e.g., spheres) --as employed in many experimental studies-- which move at very low Reynolds numbers in an unbounded fluid, such models of chemically active particles effectively map onto the well studied so-called hydrodynamic squirmers (S. Michelin and E. Lauga, J. Fluid Mech. 747, 572 (2014)). Accordingly, intuitively appealing analogies of "pusher/puller/neutral" squirmers arise naturally. Within the framework of self-diffusiophoresis we illustrate the above-mentioned mapping and the corresponding flows in an unbounded fluid for a number of choices of the activity function (i.e., the spatial distribution and the type of chemical reactions across the surface of the particle). We use the central collision of two active particles as a simple, paradigmatic case for demonstrating that in the presence of other particles or boundaries the behavior of chemically active colloids may be qualitatively different, even in the far field, from the one exhibited by the corresponding "effective squirmer", obtained from the mapping in an unbounded fluid. This emphasizes that understanding the collective behavior and the dynamics under geometrical confinement of chemically active particles necessarily requires to explicitly account for the dependence of the hydrodynamic interactions on the distribution of chemical species resulting from the activity of the particles.

Abstract
Enzymes show two distinct transport behaviors in the presence of their substrates in solution. First, their diffusivity enhances with an increasing substrate concentration. In addition, enzymes perform directional motion toward regions with a high substrate concentration, termed as chemotaxis. While a variety of enzymes has been shown to undergo chemotaxis, there remains a lack of quantitative understanding of the phenomenon. Here, we derive a general expression for the active movement of an enzyme in a concentration gradient of its substrate. The proposed model takes into account both the substrate-binding and catalytic turnover step, as well as the enhanced diffusion of the enzyme. We have experimentally measured the chemotaxis of a fast and a slow enzyme: urease under catalytic conditions and hexokinase for both full catalysis and for simple noncatalytic substrate binding. There is good agreement between the proposed model and the experiments. The model is general, has no adjustable parameters, and only requires three experimentally defined constants to quantify chemotaxis: enzyme-substrate binding affinity ( Kd), Michaelis-Menten constant ( KM), and level of diffusion enhancement in the associated substrate (α).
