Abstract
Hydrogel microparticles (HMPs) have been investigated widely for their use in tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. However, translation of these highly tunable systems has been hindered by covalent cross-linking methods within microparticles. Stereocomplexation, a stereospecific form of physical cross-linking, provides a robust yet degradable alternative for creating translationally relevant HMPs. Herein, 4-arm polyethylene glycol (PEG) stars were used as macromolecular initiators from which oligomeric poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) was polymerized with a degree of polymerization (DPn) of 20 on each arm. Similarly, complementary propargyl-containing ABA cross-linkers with enantiomeric poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) segments (DPn = 20) on each arm. Droplets of these gel precursors were formed via a microfluidic organic-in-oil-in-water system where microparticles self-assembled via stereocomplexation and were stabilized after precipitation in deionized water. By varying the flow rate of the dispersed phase, well-defined microparticles with diameters of 33.7 ± 0.5, 62.4 ± 0.6, and 105.7 ± 0.8 μm were fabricated. Gelation due to stereocomplexation was confirmed via wide-angle X-ray scattering in which HMPs exhibited the signature diffraction pattern of stereocomplexed PLA at 2θ = 12.2, 21.2, 24.2°. Differential scanning calorimetry also confirmed stereocomplexation by the appearance of a crystallization exotherm (Tc = 37 °C) and a high-temperature endotherm (Tm = 159 °C) that does not appear in the homocrystallization of PLLA or the hydrogel precursors. Additionally, the propargyl handle present on the cross-linker allows for pre- or post-assembly thiol-yne "click" functionalization as demonstrated by the addition of thiol-containing fluorophores to the HMPs.

Abstract
Granular hydrogels composed of hydrogel microparticles are promising candidates for 3D bioprinting due to their ability to protect encapsulated cells. However, to achieve high print fidelity, hydrogel microparticles need to jam to exhibit shear-thinning characteristics, which is crucial for 3D printing. Unfortunately, this overpacking can significantly impact cell viability, thereby negating the primary advantage of using hydrogel microparticles to shield cells from shear forces. To overcome this challenge, a novel solution: a biphasic, granular colloidal bioink designed to optimize cell viability and printing fidelity is introduced. The biphasic ink consists of cell-laden polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel microparticles embedded in a continuous gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-nanosilicate colloidal network. Here, it is demonstrated that this biphasic bioink offers outstanding rheological properties, print fidelity, and structural stability. Furthermore, its utility for engineering complex tissues with multiple cell types and heterogeneous microenvironments is demonstrated, by incorporating β-islet cells into the PEG microparticles and endothelial cells in the GelMA-nanosilicate colloidal network. Using this approach, it is possible to induce cell patterning, enhance vascularization, and direct cellular function. The proposed biphasic bioink holds significant potential for numerous emerging biomedical applications, including tissue engineering and disease modeling.

Abstract
Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) continuously generate platelets throughout one's life. Inherited Platelet Disorders affect ≈ 3 million individuals worldwide and are characterized by defects in platelet formation or function. A critical challenge in the identification of these diseases lies in the absence of models that facilitate the study of hematopoiesis ex vivo. Here, a silk fibroin-based bioink is developed and designed for 3D bioprinting. This bioink replicates a soft and biomimetic environment, enabling the controlled differentiation of HSPCs into platelets. The formulation consisting of silk fibroin, gelatin, and alginate is fine-tuned to obtain a viscoelastic, shear-thinning, thixotropic bioink with the remarkable ability to rapidly recover after bioprinting and provide structural integrity and mechanical stability over long-term culture. Optical transparency allowed for high-resolution imaging of platelet generation, while the incorporation of enzymatic sensors allowed quantitative analysis of glycolytic metabolism during differentiation that is represented through measurable color changes. Bioprinting patient samples revealed a decrease in metabolic activity and platelet production in Inherited Platelet Disorders. These discoveries are instrumental in establishing reference ranges for classification and automating the assessment of treatment responses. This model has far-reaching implications for application in the research of blood-related diseases, prioritizing drug development strategies, and tailoring personalized therapies.

Abstract
Non-destructive processing of powders into macroscopic materials with a wealth of structural and functional possibilities has immeasurable scientific significance and application value, yet remains a challenge using conventional processing techniques. Here we developed a universal fibration method, using two-dimensional cellulose as a mediator, to process diverse powdered materials into micro-/nanofibres, which provides structural support to the particles and preserves their own specialties and architectures. It is found that the self-shrinking force drives the two-dimensional cellulose and supported particles to pucker and roll into fibres, a gentle process that prevents agglomeration and structural damage of the powder particles. We demonstrate over 120 fibre samples involving various powder guests, including elements, compounds, organics and hybrids in different morphologies, densities and particle sizes. Customized fibres with an adjustable diameter and guest content can be easily constructed into high-performance macromaterials with various geometries, creating a library of building blocks for different fields of applications. Our fibration strategy provides a universal, powerful and non-destructive pathway bridging primary particles and macroapplications.

Abstract
Microgels have become a popular and powerful structural unit in the bioprinting field due to their advanced properties, ranging from the tiny size and well-connected hydrogel (nutrient) network to special rheological properties. Different microgels can be fabricated by a variety of fabrication methods including bulk crushing, auxiliary dripping, multiphase emulsion, and lithography technology. Traditionally, microgels can encapsulate specific cells and are used for in vitro disease models and in vivo organ regeneration. Furthermore, microgels can serve as a drug carrier to realize controlled release of drug molecules. Apart from being used as an independent application unit, recently, these microgels are widely applied as a specific bioink component in 3D bioprinting for in situ tissue repair or building special 3D structures. In this review, we introduce different methods used to generate microgels and the microgel-based bioink for bioprinting. Besides, the further tendency of microgel development in future is introduced and predicted to provide guidance for related researchers in exploring more effective ways to fabricate microgels and more potential bioprinting application cases as multifunctional bioink components.

Abstract
Three dimensional (3D) extrusion bioprinting aims to replicate the complex architectures and functions of natural tissues and organs. However, the conventional hydrogel and new-emerging microgel bioinks are both difficult in achieving simultaneously high shape-fidelity and good maintenance of cell viability/function, leading to limited amount of qualified hydrogel/microgel bioinks. Herein, a universal strategy is reported to construct high-performance microgel assembly (MA) bioinks by using epigallocatechin gallate-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-EGCG) as coating agent and phenylboronic acid grafted hyaluronic acid (HA-PBA) as assembling agent. HA-EGCG can spontaneously form uniform coating on the microgel surface via mussel-inspired chemistry, while HA-PBA quickly forms dynamic phenylborate bonds with HA-EGCG, conferring the as-prepared MA bioinks with excellent rheological properties, self-healing, and tissue-adhesion. More importantly, this strategy is applicable to various microgel materials, enabling the preparation of homo- and heterogeneous MA (homo-MA and hetero-MA) bioinks and the hierarchical printing of complicated structures with high fidelity by integration of different microgels containing multiple materials/cells in spatial and compositional levels. It further demonstrates the printing of breast cancer organoid in vitro using homo-MA and hetero-MA bioinks and its preliminary application for drug testing. This universal strategy offers a new solution to construct high-performance bioinks for extrusion bioprinting.

Abstract
Gradient matters with hierarchical structures endow the natural world with excellent integrity and diversity. Currently, direct ink writing 3D printing is attracting tremendous interest, and has been used to explore the fabrication of 1D and 2D hierarchical structures by adjusting the diameter, spacing, and angle between filaments. However, it is difficult to generate complex 3D gradient matters owing to the inherent limitations of existing methods in terms of available gradient dimension, gradient resolution, and shape fidelity. Here, we report a filament diameter-adjustable 3D printing strategy that enables conventional extrusion 3D printers to produce 1D, 2D, and 3D gradient matters with tunable heterogeneous structures by continuously varying the volume of deposited ink on the printing trajectory. In detail, we develop diameter-programmable filaments by customizing the printing velocity and height. To achieve high shape fidelity, we specially add supporting layers at needed locations. Finally, we showcase multi-disciplinary applications of our strategy in creating horizontal, radial, and axial gradient structures, letter-embedded structures, metastructures, tissue-mimicking scaffolds, flexible electronics, and time-driven devices. By showing the potential of this strategy, we anticipate that it could be easily extended to a variety of filament-based additive manufacturing technologies and facilitate the development of functionally graded structures.

Abstract
Fast advances in the design of soft actuators and robots demand for new soft materials whose mechanical properties can be changed over short length scales. Elastomers can be formulated as highly stretchable or rather stiff materials and hence, are attractive for these applications. They are most frequently cast such that their composition cannot be changed over short length scales. A method that allows to locally change the composition of elastomers on hundreds of micrometer lengths scales is direct ink writing (DIW). Unfortunately, in the absence of rheomodifiers, most elastomer precursors cannot be printed through DIW. Here, 3D printable double network granular elastomers (DNGEs) whose ultimate tensile strain and stiffness can be varied over an unprecedented range are introduced. The 3D printability of these materials is leveraged to produce an elastomer finger containing rigid bones that are surrounded by a soft skin. Similarly, the rheological properties of the microparticle-based precursors are leveraged to cast elastomer slabs with locally varying stiffnesses that deform and twist in a predefined fashion. These DNGEs are foreseen to open up new avenues in the design of the next generation of smart wearables, strain sensors, prosthesis, soft actuators, and robots.

Abstract
Percutaneous thermotherapy, a minimally invasive operational procedure, is employed in the ablation of deep tumor lesions by means of target-delivering heat. Conventional thermal ablation methods, such as radiofrequency or microwave ablation, to a certain extent, are subjected to extended ablation time as well as biosafety risks of unwanted overheating. Given its effectiveness and safety, percutaneous thermotherapy gains a fresh perspective, thanks to magnetic hyperthermia. In this respect, an injectable- and magnetic-hydrogel-construct-based thermal ablation agent is likely to be a candidate for the aforementioned clinical translation. Adopting a simple and environment-friendly strategy, a magnetic colloidal hydrogel injection is introduced by a binary system comprising super-paramagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and gelatin nanoparticles. The colloidal hydrogel constructs, unlike conventional bulk hydrogel, can be easily extruded through a percutaneous needle and then self-heal in a reversible manner owing to the unique electrostatic cross-linking. The introduction of magnetic building blocks is exhibited with a rapid magnetothermal response to an alternating magnetic field. Such hydrogel injection is capable of generating heat without limitation of deep penetration. The materials achieve outstanding therapeutic results in mouse and rabbit models. These findings constitute a new class of locoregional interventional thermal therapies with minimal collateral damages.

Abstract
Advancements in 3D bioprinting have been hindered by the trade-off between printability and biological functionality. Existing bioinks struggle to meet both requirements simultaneously. However, new types of bioinks composed of densely packed microgels promise to address this challenge. These bioinks possess intrinsic porosity, allowing for cell growth, oxygen and nutrient transport, and better immunomodulatory properties, leading to superior biological functions. In this review, we highlight key trends in the development of these granular bioinks. Using examples, we demonstrate how granular bioinks overcome the trade-off between printability and cell function. Granular bioinks show promise in 3D bioprinting, yet understanding their unique structure-property-function relationships is crucial to fully leverage the transformative capabilities of these new types of bioinks in bioprinting.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle injuries including volumetric muscle loss (VML) lead to excessive tissue scarring and permanent functional disability. Despite its high prevalence, there is currently no effective treatment for VML. Bioengineering interventions such as biomaterials that fill the VML defect to support cell and tissue growth are a promising therapeutic strategy. However, traditional biomaterials developed for this purpose lack the pore features needed to support cell infiltration. The present study investigates for the first time, the impact of granular hydrogels on muscle repair - hypothesizing that their flowability will permit conformable filling of the defect site and their inherent porosity will support the invasion of native myogenic cells, leading to effective muscle repair. Small and large microparticle fragments are prepared from photocurable hyaluronic acid polymer via extrusion fragmentation and facile size sorting. In assembled granular hydrogels, particle size and degree of packing significantly influence pore features, rheological behavior, and injectability. Using a mouse model of VML, it is demonstrated that, in contrast to bulk hydrogels, granular hydrogels support early-stage (satellite cell invasion) and late-stage (myofiber regeneration) muscle repair processes. Together, these results highlight the promising potential of injectable and porous granular hydrogels in supporting endogenous repair after severe muscle injury.

Abstract
The large-scale employment of 3D printed inorganic thermoelectrics is primarily constrained because of their lower efficiencies as compared to those fabricated from conventional methods such as spark plasma sintering and hot-pressing. This originates from the significant challenge in the densification of printed parts, particularly through the direct-ink-writing fabrication process, which demands a high binder content for printability. To achieve high-density printed thermoelectrics, the ink formulation process often involves the addition of substantial filler content and sintering aids, coupled with prolonged sintering periods. Here, we propose a strategy to resolve the low densification issue of 3D printed thermoelectrics through a binder-less and sintering aid-free thermoelectric nanowire ink system that can achieve dense thermoelectric structures (up to 82.5% theoretical density). The increase in density and corresponding enhancement of thermoelectric material efficiency are attained in a more tunable and controlled manner without compromising the material composition. A high filler-derived density index (FDI) of 2.51 is also achieved, implying the potential to obtain high-density parts with minimal filler content, thus unlocking a cascade of profound impacts. Crucially, this advancement enables the possibilities of anisotropic engineering in thermoelectric materials, thereby shattering the limitations that have hindered the widespread adoption of 3D printed inorganic thermoelectrics.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a groundbreaking technology for fabricating intricate and functional tissue constructs. Central to this technology are the bioinks, which provide structural support and mimic the extracellular environment, which is crucial for cellular executive function. This review summarizes the latest developments in microparticulate inks for 3D bioprinting and presents their inherent challenges. We categorize micro-particulate materials, including polymeric microparticles, tissue-derived microparticles, and bioactive inorganic microparticles, and introduce the microparticle ink formulations, including granular microparticles inks consisting of densely packed microparticles and composite microparticle inks comprising microparticles and interstitial matrix. The formulations of these microparticle inks are also delved into highlighting their capabilities as modular entities in 3D bioprinting. Finally, existing challenges and prospective research trajectories for advancing the design of microparticle inks for bioprinting are discussed.

Abstract
Hydrogel microparticles (HMPs) stand out as promising entities in the realm of bone tissue regeneration, primarily due to their versatile capabilities in delivering cells and bioactive molecules/drugs. Their significance is underscored by distinct attributes such as injectability, biodegradability, high porosity, and mechanical tunability. These characteristics play a pivotal role in fostering vasculature formation, facilitating mineral deposition, and contributing to the overall regeneration of bone tissue. Fabricated through diverse techniques (batch emulsion, microfluidics, lithography, and electrohydrodynamic spraying), HMPs exhibit multifunctionality, serving as vehicles for drug and cell delivery, providing structural scaffolding, and functioning as bioinks for advanced 3D-printing applications. Distinguishing themselves from other scaffolds like bulk hydrogels, cryogels, foams, meshes, and fibers, HMPs provide a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, promoting improved interactions with the surrounding tissues and facilitating the efficient delivery of cells and bioactive molecules. Notably, their minimally invasive injectability and modular properties, offering various designs and configurations, contribute to their attractiveness for biomedical applications. This comprehensive review aims to delve into the progressive advancements in HMPs, specifically for bone regeneration. The exploration encompasses synthesis and functionalization techniques, providing an understanding of their diverse applications, as documented in the existing literature. Abstract
Microgel-based biomaterials have inherent porosity and are often extrudable, making them well-suited for 3D bioprinting applications. Cells are commonly introduced into these granular inks post-printing using cell infiltration. However, due to slow cell migration speeds, this strategy struggles to achieve depth-independent cell distributions within thick 3D printed geometries. To address this, we leverage granular ink modularity by combining two microgels with distinct functions: (1) structural, UV-crosslinkable microgels made from gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and (2) sacrificial, cell-laden microgels made from oxidized alginate (AlgOx). We hypothesize that encapsulating cells within sacrificial AlgOx microgels would enable the simultaneous introduction of void space and release of cells at depths unachievable through cell infiltration alone. Blending the microgels in different ratios produces a family of highly printable GelMA : AlgOx microgel inks with void fractions ranging from 0.03 to 0.35. As expected, void fraction influences the morphology of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) within GelMA : AlgOx inks. Crucially, void fraction does not alter the ideal HUVEC distribution seen throughout the depth of 3D printed samples. This work presents a strategy for fabricating constructs with tunable porosity and depth-independent cell distribution, highlighting the promise of microgel-based inks for 3D bioprinting.

Abstract
Polymer-polymer aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) are attractive for microgel synthesis, but given the complexity of phase separation, predicting microgel material properties from ATPS formulations is not trivial. The objective of this study was to determine how the phase diagram of a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and dextran ATPS is related to the material properties of PEG microgel products. PEG-dextran ATPSs were prepared from four-arm 20 kDa PEG-norbornene and 40 kDa dextran in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and the phase diagram was constructed. PEG microgels were synthesized from five ATPS formulations using an oligopeptide cross-linker and thiol-norbornene photochemistry. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the polymer concentration of microgel pellets linearly correlates with the average concentration of PEG in the ATPS rather than the separated phase compositions, as determined from the phase diagram. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and bulk rheology studies demonstrated that the mechanical properties of microgels rely on both the average concentration of PEG in the ATPS and the ATPS volume ratio as determined from the phase diagram. These findings suggest that PEG-dextran ATPSs undergo homogenization upon mixing, which principally determines the material properties of the microgels upon gelation.

Abstract
The convergence of 3D bioprinting with powerful manufacturing capability and cellular self-organization that can reproduce intricate tissue microarchitecture and function is a promising direction toward building functional tissues and has yet to be demonstrated. Here, we develop a granular aggregate-prevascularized (GAP) bioink for engineering highly vascularized bone tissues by capitalizing on the condensate-mimicking, self-organization, and angiogenic properties of prevascularized mesenchymal spheroids. The GAP bioink utilizes prevascularized aggregates as building blocks, which are embedded densely in extracellular matrices conducive to spontaneous self-organization. We printed various complex structures with high cell density (∼1.5 × 108 cells/cm3), viability (∼80%), and shape fidelity using GAP bioink. After printing, the prevascularized mesenchymal spheroids developed an interconnected vascular network through angiogenic sprouting. We printed highly vascularized bone tissues using GAP bioink and found that prevascularized spheroids were more conducive to osteogenesis and angiogenesis. We envision that the design of the GAP bioink could be further integrated with human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids, which opens new avenues to create patient-specific vascularized tissues for therapeutic applications..

Abstract
Granular hydrogels have recently emerged as promising biomaterials for tissue engineering and 3D-printing applications, addressing the limitations of bulk hydrogels while exhibiting desirable properties such as injectability and high porosity. However, their structural stability can be improved with post-injection interparticle cross-linking. In this study, we developed granular hydrogels with interparticle cross-linking through reversible and dynamic covalent bonds. We fragmented photo-cross-linked bulk hydrogels to produce aldehyde or hydrazide-functionalized microgels using chondroitin sulfate. Mixing these microgels facilitated interparticle cross-linking through reversible hydrazone bonds, providing shear-thinning and self-healing properties for injectability and 3D printing. The resulting granular hydrogels displayed high mechanical stability without the need for secondary cross-linking. Furthermore, the porosity and sustained release of growth factors from these hydrogels synergistically enhanced cell recruitment. Our study highlights the potential of reversible interparticle cross-linking for designing injectable and 3D printable therapeutic delivery scaffolds using granular hydrogels. Overall, our study highlights the potential of reversible interparticle cross-linking to improve the structural stability of granular hydrogels, making them an effective biomaterial for use in tissue engineering and 3D-printing applications.

Abstract
The printability of bioink and post-printing cell viability is crucial for extrusion-based bioprinting. A proper bioink not only provides mechanical support for structural fidelity, but also serves as suitable three-dimensional (3D) microenvironment for cell encapsulation and protection. In this study, a hydrogel-based composite bioink was developed consisting of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) as the continuous phase and decellularised extracellular matrix microgels (DMs) as the discrete phase. A flow-focusing microfluidic system was employed for the fabrication of cell-laden DMs in a high-throughput manner. After gentle mixing of the DMs and GelMA, both rheological characterisations and 3D printing tests showed that the resulting DM-GelMA hydrogel preserved the shear-thinning nature, mechanical properties, and good printability from GelMA. The integration of DMs not only provided an extracellular matrix-like microenvironment for cell encapsulation, but also considerable shear-resistance for high post-printing cell viability. The DM sizes and inner diameters of the 3D printer needles were correlated and optimised for nozzle-based extrusion. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept bioink composedg of RSC96 Schwann cells encapsulated DMs and human umbilical vein endothelial cell-laden GelMA was successfully bioprinted into 3D constructs, resulting in a modular co-culture system with distinct cells/materials distribution. Overall, the modular DM-GelMA bioink provides a springboard for future precision biofabrication and will serve in numerous biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and drug screening.

Abstract
Oxygen is a vital molecule involved in regulating development, homeostasis, and disease. The oxygen levels in tissue vary from 1 to 14% with deviations from homeostasis impacting regulation of various physiological processes. In this work, we developed an approach to encapsulate enzymes at high loading capacity, which precisely controls the oxygen content in cell culture. Here, a single microcapsule is able to locally perturb the oxygen balance, and varying the concentration and distribution of matrix-embedded microcapsules provides spatiotemporal control. We demonstrate attenuation of hypoxia signaling in populations of stem cells, cancer cells, endothelial cells, cancer spheroids, and intestinal organoids. Varying capsule placement, media formulation, and timing of replenishment yields tunable oxygen gradients, with concurrent spatial growth and morphogenesis in a single well. Capsule containing hydrogel films applied to chick chorioallantoic membranes encourages neovascularization, providing scope for topical treatments or hydrogel wound dressings. This platform can be used in a variety of formats, including deposition in hydrogels, as granular solids for 3D bioprinting, and as injectable biomaterials. Overall, this platform's simplicity and flexibility will prove useful for fundamental studies of oxygen-mediated processes in virtually any in vitro or in vivo format, with scope for inclusion in biomedical materials for treating injury or disease.

Abstract
Granular hydrogels are an emerging class of biomaterials formed by jamming hydrogel microparticles (i.e., microgels). These materials have many advantageous properties that can be tailored through microgel design and extent of packing. To enhance the range of properties, granular composites can be formed with a hydrogel interstitial matrix between the packed microgels, allowing for material flow and then stabilization after crosslinking. This approach allows for distinct compartments (i.e., microgels and interstitial space) with varied properties to engineer complex material behaviors. However, a thorough investigation of how the compositions and ratios of microgels and interstitial matrices influence material properties has not been performed. Herein, granular hydrogel composites are fabricated by combining fragmented hyaluronic acid (HA) microgels with interstitial matrices consisting of photocrosslinkable HA. Microgels of varying compressive moduli (10-70 kPa) are combined with interstitial matrices (0-30 vol.%) with compressive moduli varying from 2-120 kPa. Granular composite structure (confocal imaging), mechanics (local and bulk), flow behavior (rheology), and printability are thoroughly assessed. Lastly, variations in the interstitial matrix chemistry (covalent vs guest-host) and microgel degradability are investigated. Overall, this study describes the influence of granular composite composition on structure and mechanical properties of granular hydrogels towards informed designs for future applications.

Abstract
The development of the effective 3D printing strategy for diverse functional monomers is still challenging. Moreover, the conventional 3D printing hydrogels are usually soft and fragile due to the lack of an energy dissipation mechanism. Herein, a microsphere mediating ink preparation strategy is developed to provide tailored rheological behavior for various monomer direct ink writings. The chitosan microspheres are used as an exemplary material due to their tunable swelling ratio under the acid-drived electrostatic repulsion of the protonated amino groups. The rheological behaviors of the swollen chitosan microsphere (SCM) are independent on the monomer types, and various functional secondary polymers could be carried at a wide loading ratio by the acid driving. The SCM reinforces the hydrogel as the sacrificial bonds. With the adjustable composition, the 3D printing hydrogel mechanical properties are tunable in wide windows: strength (0.4-1.01 MPa), dissipated energy (0.11-3.25 MJ m-3), and elongation at break (47-626%). With the excellent printing and mechanical properties, the SCM inks enable multi-functional integration for soft device production, such as 4D printing robots and wearable strain sensors. We anticipate that this microsphere mediating 3D printing strategy can inspire new possibilities for the design of the robust hydrogels with a broad range of functionalities and mechanical performances.

Abstract
Biomanufacturing of functional tissue analogues is of great importance in regenerative medicine. However, this is still highly challenging due to extreme difficulties in recreating/recapitulating complicated anatomies of body tissues that have both well-defined three-dimensional (3D) multicellular organizations and bioactive nanofibrous extracellular matrix (ECM). In the current investigation, a biomanufacturing approach via concurrent emulsion electrospinning and coaxial cell electrospraying was developed, which could fabricate 3D nanofibrous multicellular constructs that resemble both the multicellular organizations and bioactive nanofibrous microenvironments of body tissues. In the proof-of-concept study, endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) were placed in respective layers of multilayer-structured constructs. The two different construct layers consisted of nanofibers providing different topographies (randomly oriented nanofibers or aligned nanofibers) and contained different growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor or platelet-derived growth factor). The ECs and SMCs in the different construct layers showed high cell densities (> 4 ×105 cells/cm2 after 4-day incubation) and high cell viabilities (> 95%). Owing to the contact guidance/stimulation by different fibrous topographies and sequential release of different growth factors, ECs and SMCs exhibited distinct morphologies (uniformly stretched plaque-shaped or directionally elongated) and displayed enhanced proliferative activities. Our biomanufacturing approach is shown to be effective and efficient in reconstituting/replicating cell-ECM organizations as well as their interactions similar to those in body tissues such as blood vessels, indicating the great promise to produce a range of tissue analogues with biomimetic structures and functions for modeling or regenerating body tissues.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting demonstrates technology that is capable of producing structures comparable to native tissues in the human body. The freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels (FRESH) technique involves hydrogel-based bio-inks printed within a thermo-reversible support bath to provide mechanical strength to the printed construct. Smaller and more uniform microsphere sizes of FRESH were reported to aid in enhancing printing resolution and construct accuracy. Therefore, we sought to optimize the FRESH generation protocol, particularly by varying stir speed and stir duration, in hopes to further improve microsphere size and uniformity. We observed optimal conditions at a stir speed of 600 rpm and stir duration for 20 h that generated the smallest microspheres with the best uniformity. Comparison of using the optimized FRESH to the commercial FRESH LifeSupport to bioprint single filament and geometrical constructs revealed reduced single filament diameters and higher angular precision in the optimized FRESH bio-printed constructs compared with those printed in the commercial FRESH. Overall, our refinement of the FRESH manufacturing protocol represents an important step toward enhancing 3D bioprinting resolution and construct fidelity. Improving such technologies allows for the fabrication of highly accurate constructs with anatomical properties similar to native counterparts. Such work has significant implications in the field of tissue engineering for producing accurate human organ model systems. Impact statement Freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels (FRESH) is a method of sacrificial three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting that offers support to reinforce bio-ink extrusion during printing. During FRESH generation, the stir speed and stir duration of the mixture can significantly impact FRESH microsphere characteristics. In this study, we optimized FRESH microspheres to significantly improve resolution and accuracy in bioprinting. This advancement in FRESH-based 3D bioprinting technologies allows for the fabrication of highly accurate constructs with anatomical properties similar to native counterparts and has significant implications in the field of tissue engineering and translational medicine.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting, which is being increasingly used in tissue engineering, requires bioinks with tunable mechanical properties, biological activities, and mechanical strength for in vivo implantation. Herein, a growth-factor-holding poly(organophosphazene)-based thermo-responsive nanocomposite (TNC) bioink system is developed. The mechanical properties of the TNC bioink are easily controlled within a moderate temperature range (5-37 °C). During printing, the mechanical properties of the TNC bioink, which determine the 3D printing resolution, can be tuned by varying the temperature (15-30 °C). After printing, TNC bioink scaffolds exhibit maximum stiffness at 37 °C. Additionally, because of its shear-thinning and self-healing properties, TNC bioinks can be extruded smoothly, demonstrating good printing outcomes. TNC bioink loaded with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1), key growth factors for osteogenesis, is used to print a scaffold that can stimulate biological activity. A biological scaffold printed using TNC bioink loaded with both growth factors and implanted on a rat calvarial defect model reveals significantly improved bone regenerative effects. The TNC bioink system is a promising next-generation bioink platform because its mechanical properties can be tuned easily for high-resolution 3D bioprinting with long-term stability and its growth-factor holding capability has strong clinical applicability.

Abstract
Living materials bring together material science and biology to allow the engineering and augmenting of living systems with novel functionalities. Bioprinting promises accurate control over the formation of such complex materials through programmable deposition of cells in soft materials, but current approaches had limited success in fine-tuning cell microenvironments while generating robust macroscopic morphologies. Here, we address this challenge through the use of core-shell microgel ink to decouple cell microenvironments from the structural shell for further processing. Cells are microfluidically immobilized in the viscous core that can promote the formation of both microbial populations and mammalian cellular spheroids, followed by interparticle annealing to give covalently stabilized functional scaffolds with controlled microporosity. The results show that the core-shell strategy mitigates cell leakage while affording a favorable environment for cell culture. Furthermore, we demonstrate that different microbial consortia can be printed into scaffolds for a range of applications. By compartmentalizing microbial consortia in separate microgels, the collective bioprocessing capability of the scaffold is significantly enhanced, shedding light on strategies to augment living materials with bioprocessing capabilities.

Abstract
Cartilage degeneration is among the fundamental reasons behind disability and pain across the globe. Numerous approaches have been employed to treat cartilage diseases. Nevertheless, none have shown acceptable outcomes in the long run. In this regard, the convergence of tissue engineering and microfabrication principles can allow developing more advanced microfluidic technologies, thus offering attractive alternatives to current treatments and traditional constructs used in tissue engineering applications. Herein, the current developments involving microfluidic hydrogel-based scaffolds, promising structures for cartilage regeneration, ranging from hydrogels with microfluidic channels to hydrogels prepared by the microfluidic devices, that enable therapeutic delivery of cells, drugs, and growth factors, as well as cartilage-related organ-on-chips are reviewed. Thereafter, cartilage anatomy and types of damages, and present treatment options are briefly overviewed. Various hydrogels are introduced, and the advantages of microfluidic hydrogel-based scaffolds over traditional hydrogels are thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, available technologies for fabricating microfluidic hydrogel-based scaffolds and microfluidic chips are presented. The preclinical and clinical applications of microfluidic hydrogel-based scaffolds in cartilage regeneration and the development of cartilage-related microfluidic chips over time are further explained. The current developments, recent key challenges, and attractive prospects that should be considered so as to develop microfluidic systems in cartilage repair are highlighted.

Abstract
Extrusible biomaterials have recently attracted increasing attention due to the desirable injectability and printability to allow minimally invasive administration and precise construction of tissue mimics. Specifically, self-healing colloidal gels are a novel class of candidate materials as injectables or printable inks considering their fascinating viscoelastic behavior and high degree of freedom on tailoring their compositional and mechanical properties. Herein, we developed a novel class of adaptable and osteogenic composite colloidal gels via electrostatic assembly of gelatin nanoparticles and nanoclay particles. These composite gels exhibited excellent injectability and printability, and remarkable mechanical properties reflected by the maximal elastic modulus reaching ∼150 kPa combined with high self-healing efficiency, outperforming most previously reported self-healing hydrogels. Moreover, the cytocompatibility and the osteogenic capacity of the colloidal gels were demonstrated by inductive culture of MC3T3 cells seeded on the three-dimensional (3D)-printed colloidal scaffolds. Besides, the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the colloidal gels was provedin vivoby subcutaneous implantation of the 3D-printed scaffolds. Furthermore, we investigated the therapeutic capacity of the colloidal gels, either in form of injectable gels or 3D-printed bone substitutes, using rat sinus bone augmentation model or critical-sized cranial defect model. The results confirmed that the composite gels were able to adapt to the local complexity including irregular or customized defect shapes and continuous on-site mechanical stimuli, but also to realize osteointegrity with the surrounding bone tissues and eventually be replaced by newly formed bones.

Abstract
Granular hydrogels have been increasingly exploited in biomedical applications, including wound healing and cardiac repair. Despite their utility, design guidelines for engineering their macroscale properties remain limited, as we do not understand how the properties of granular hydrogels emerge from collective interactions of their microgel building blocks. In this work, we related building block features (stiffness and size) to the macroscale properties of granular hydrogels using contact mechanics. We investigated the mechanics of the microgel packings through dynamic oscillatory rheology. In addition, we modeled the system as a collection of two-body interactions and applied the Zwanzig and Mountain formula to calculate the plateau modulus and viscosity of the granular hydrogels. The calculations agreed with the dynamic mechanical measurements and described how microgel properties and contact deformations define the rheology of granular hydrogels. These results support a rational design framework for improved engineering of this fascinating class of materials.

Abstract
Successful regeneration of cartilage tissue at a clinical scale has been a tremendous challenge in the past decades. Microcarriers (MCs), usually used for cell and drug delivery, have been studied broadly across a wide range of medical fields, especially the cartilage tissue engineering (TE). Notably, microcarrier systems provide an attractive method for regulating cell phenotype and microtissue maturations, they also serve as powerful injectable carriers and are combined with new technologies for cartilage regeneration. In this review, we introduced the typical methods to fabricate various types of microcarriers and discussed the appropriate materials for microcarriers. Furthermore, we highlighted recent progress of applications and general design principle for microcarriers. Finally, we summarized the current challenges and promising prospects of microcarrier-based systems for medical applications. Overall, this review provides comprehensive and systematic guidelines for the rational design and applications of microcarriers in cartilage TE. This review summarized fabrication techniques and cartilage repaired application of microcarriers. The appropriate materials and design principle for microcarriers in cartilage tissue engineering are discussed. Promising future perspectives and challenges in microcarriers fields are outlined.

Abstract
Granular hydrogels are an exciting class of microporous and injectable biomaterials that are being explored for many biomedical applications, including regenerative medicine, 3D printing, and drug delivery. Granular hydrogels often possess low mechanical moduli and lack structural integrity due to weak physical interactions between microgels. This has been addressed through covalent inter-particle crosslinking; however, covalent crosslinking often occurs through temporal enzymatic methods or photoinitiated reactions, which may limit injectability and material processing. To address this, a hyaluronic acid (HA) granular hydrogel is developed with dynamic covalent (hydrazone) inter-particle crosslinks. Extrusion fragmentation is used to fabricate microgels from photocrosslinkable norbornene-modified HA, additionally modified with either aldehyde or hydrazide groups. Aldehyde and hydrazide-containing microgels are mixed and jammed to form adhesive granular hydrogels. These granular hydrogels possess enhanced mechanical integrity and shape stability over controls due to the covalent inter-particle bonds, while maintaining injectability due to the dynamic hydrazone bonds. The adhesive granular hydrogels are applied to 3D printing, which allows the printing of structures that are stable without any further post-processing. Additionally, the authors demonstrate that adhesive granular hydrogels allow for cell invasion in vitro. Overall, this work demonstrates the use of dynamic covalent inter-particle crosslinking to enhance injectable granular hydrogels.

Abstract
Granular synthetic hydrogels are useful bioinks for their compatibility with a variety of chemistries, affording printable, stimuli-responsive scaffolds with programmable structure and function. Additive manufacturing of microscale hydrogels, or microgels, allows for the fabrication of large cellularized constructs with percolating interstitial space, providing a platform for tissue engineering at length scales that are inaccessible by bulk encapsulation where transport of media and other biological factors are limited by scaffold density. Herein, synthetic microgels with varying degrees of degradability are prepared with diameters on the order of hundreds of microns by submerged electrospray and UV photopolymerization. Porous microgel scaffolds are assembled by particle jamming and extrusion printing, and semi-orthogonal chemical cues are utilized to tune the void fraction in printed scaffolds in a logic-gated manner. Scaffolds with different void fractions are easily cellularized post printing and microgels can be directly annealed into cell-laden structures. Finally, high-throughput direct encapsulation of cells within printable microgels is demonstrated, enabling large-scale 3D culture in a macroporous biomaterial. This approach provides unprecedented spatiotemporal control over the properties of printed microporous annealed particle scaffolds for 2.5D and 3D tissue culture.

Abstract
3D bioprinting of granular hydrogels comprising discrete hydrogel microparticles (microgels) may overcome the intrinsic structural limitations of bulk (nanoporous) hydrogel bioinks, enabling the fabrication of modular thick tissue constructs. The additive manufacturing of granular scaffolds has predominantly relied on highly jammed microgels to render the particulate suspensions shear yielding and extrudable. This inevitably compromises void spaces between microgels (microporosity), defeating rapid cell penetration, facile metabolite and oxygen transfer, and cell viability. Here, this persistent bottleneck is overcome by programming microgels with reversible interfacial nanoparticle self-assembly, enabling the fabrication of nanoengineered granular bioinks (NGB) with well-preserved microporosity, enhanced printability, and shape fidelity. The microporous architecture of bioprinted NGB constructs permits immediate post-printing 3D cell seeding, which may expand the library of bioinks via circumventing the necessity of bioorthogonality for cell-laden scaffold formation. This work opens new opportunities for the 3D bioprinting of tissue engineering microporous scaffolds beyond the traditional biofabrication window.

Abstract
Magnesium cation (Mg2+) has been an emerging therapeutic agent for inducing vascularized bone regeneration. However, the therapeutic effects of current magnesium (Mg) -containing biomaterials are controversial due to the concentration- and stage-dependent behavior of Mg2+. Here, we first provide an overview of biochemical mechanism of Mg2+ in various concentrations and suggest that 2-10 mM Mg2+in vitro may be optimized. This review systematically summarizes and discusses several types of controlled Mg2+ delivery systems based on polymer-Mg composite scaffolds and Mg-containing hydrogels, as well as their design philosophy and several parameters that regulate Mg2+ release. Given that the continuous supply of Mg2+ may prevent biomineral deposition in the later stage of bone regeneration and maturation, we highlight the controlled delivery of Mg2+ based dual- or multi-ions system, especially for the hierarchical therapeutic ion release system, which shows enhanced biomineralization. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives of Mg-containing biomaterials for future in situ bone tissue engineering are discussed as well.

Abstract
Biomaterials with the ability to self-heal and recover their structural integrity offer many advantages for applications in biomedicine. The past decade has witnessed the rapid emergence of a new class of self-healing biomaterials commonly termed injectable, or printable in the context of 3D printing. These self-healing injectable biomaterials, mostly hydrogels and other soft condensed matter based on reversible chemistry, are able to temporarily fluidize under shear stress and subsequently recover their original mechanical properties. Self-healing injectable hydrogels offer distinct advantages compared to traditional biomaterials. Most notably, they can be administered in a locally targeted and minimally invasive manner through a narrow syringe without the need for invasive surgery. Their moldability allows for a patient-specific intervention and shows great prospects for personalized medicine. Injected hydrogels can facilitate tissue regeneration in multiple ways owing to their viscoelastic and diffusive nature, ranging from simple mechanical support, spatiotemporally controlled delivery of cells or therapeutics, to local recruitment and modulation of host cells to promote tissue regeneration. Consequently, self-healing injectable hydrogels have been at the forefront of many cutting-edge tissue regeneration strategies. This study provides a critical review of the current state of self-healing injectable hydrogels for tissue regeneration. As key challenges toward further maturation of this exciting research field, we identify (i) the trade-off between the self-healing and injectability of hydrogels vs their physical stability, (ii) the lack of consensus on rheological characterization and quantitative benchmarks for self-healing injectable hydrogels, particularly regarding the capillary flow in syringes, and (iii) practical limitations regarding translation toward therapeutically effective formulations for regeneration of specific tissues. Hence, here we (i) review chemical and physical design strategies for self-healing injectable hydrogels, (ii) provide a practical guide for their rheological analysis, and (iii) showcase their applicability for regeneration of various tissues and 3D printing of complex tissues and organoids.

Abstract
For the past decade, additive manufacturing has resulted in significant advances toward fabricating anatomic-size patient-specific scaffolds for tissue models and regenerative medicine. This can be attributed to the development of advanced bioinks capable of precise deposition of cells and biomaterials. The combination of additive manufacturing with advanced bioinks is enabling researchers to fabricate intricate tissue scaffolds that recreate the complex spatial distributions of cells and bioactive cues found in the human body. However, the expansion of this promising technique has been hampered by the high cost of commercially available bioprinters and proprietary software. In contrast, conventional three-dimensional (3D) printing has become increasingly popular with home hobbyists and caused an explosion of both low-cost thermoplastic 3D printers and open-source software to control the printer. In this study, we bring these benefits into the field of bioprinting by converting widely available and cost-effective 3D printers into fully functional, open-source, and customizable multihead bioprinters. These bioprinters utilize computer controlled volumetric extrusion, allowing bioinks with a wide range of flow properties to be bioprinted, including non-Newtonian bioinks. We demonstrate the practicality of this approach by designing bioprinters customized with multiple extruders, automatic bed leveling, and temperature controls for ∼$400 USD. These bioprinters were then used for in vitro and ex vivo bioprinting to demonstrate their utility for tissue engineering.

Abstract
Bioprinting is an emerging technology for fabricating cell-laden scaffolds with custom shapes and patterns that resemble the complex architecture of human tissues, however, construction of mechanically competent tissue grafts which mimic irregular cartilage defect is still a big challenge. Here we report 3D printing of short fiber-reinforced double-network bioink to generate anatomically accurate and mechanical tunable scaffold for cartilage regeneration. Poly (lactic acid) (PLLA) short fibers were firstly prepared by electrospinning and then fragmented through aminolysis reaction. Composite inks were constructed with incorporation of fragmented microfibers with varied amounts and lengths into oxidized alginate bioink. Our results showed that incorporation of PLLA short fibers not only improved the printing fidelity but also facilitated in generating mechanically strong constructs. By incorporating GelMA and optimizing the bioink composition, the fabricated constructs with a compressive stress of ∼150 KPa even after 100 cyclical compression loading (up to 40% of strain) were achieved. In addition, this mechanically reinforced alginate/GelMA double-network bioink displayed good biocompatibility and supported bone marrow derived stromal cell chondrogenesis in vitro. Collectively, our findings demonstrate this approach was capable of printing engineered grafts which resemble the irregular size and mechanical properties of cartilage and thus hold potential for functional tissue regeneration. Abstract
In-situ bioprinting is attractive for directly depositing the therapy bioink at the defective organs to repair them, especially for occupations such as soldiers, athletes, and drivers who can be injured in emergency. However, traditional bioink displays obvious limitations in its complex operation environments. Here, we design a bioconcrete bioink with electrosprayed cell-laden microgels as the aggregate and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) precursor solution as the cement. Promising printability is guaranteed with a wide temperature range benefiting from robust rheological properties of photocrosslinked microgel aggregate and fluidity of GelMA cement. Composite components simultaneously self-adapt to biocompatibility and different tissue mechanical microenvironment. Strong binding on tissue-hydrogel interface is achieved by hydrogen bonds and friction when the cement is photocrosslinked. This bioink owns good portability and can be easily prepared in urgent accidents. Meanwhile, microgels can be cultured to mini tissues and then mixed as bioink aggregates, indicating our bioconcrete can be functionalized faster than normal bioinks. The cranial defects repair results verify the superiority of this bioink and its potential in clinical settings required in in-situ treatment. Bioinks used in current in-situ bioprinting have limitations when applied to complex operational environments. Here, the authors report on the creation of a microgel reinforced GelMA bioink which can be simply prepared and used in different biomedical settings. The application is demonstrated in a cranial defect model.

Abstract
Granular hydrogels are jammed assemblies of hydrogel microparticles (i.e., "microgels"). In the field of biomaterials, granular hydrogels have many advantageous properties, including injectability, microscale porosity, and tunability by mixing multiple microgel populations. Methods to fabricate microgels often rely on water-in-oil emulsions (e.g., microfluidics, batch emulsions, electrospraying) or photolithography, which may present high demands in terms of resources and costs, and may not be compatible with many hydrogels. This work details simple yet highly effective methods to fabricate microgels using extrusion fragmentation and to process them into granular hydrogels useful for biomedical applications (e.g., 3D printing inks). First, bulk hydrogels (using photocrosslinkable hyaluronic acid (HA) as an example) are extruded through a series of needles with sequentially smaller diameters to form fragmented microgels. This microgel fabrication technique is rapid, low-cost, and highly scalable. Methods to jam microgels into granular hydrogels by centrifugation and vacuum-driven filtration are described, with optional post-crosslinking for hydrogel stabilization. Lastly, granular hydrogels fabricated from fragmented microgels are demonstrated as extrusion printing inks. While the examples described herein use photocrosslinkable HA for 3D printing, the methods are easily adaptable for a wide variety of hydrogel types and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Rapid advances in the biomedical field increasingly often demand soft materials that can be processed into complex 3D shapes while being able to reliably bear significant loads. Granular hydrogels have the potential to serve as artificial tissues because they can be 3D printed into complex 3D shapes and their composition can be tuned over short length scales. Unfortunately, granular hydrogels are typically soft such that they cannot be used for load-bearing applications. To address this shortcoming, individual microgels can be connected through a percolating network, such that they introduce the double network toughening mechanism into granular hydrogels. However, the influence of the microgel size and concentration on the processing and toughness of microgel-reinforced hydrogels (MRHs) remains to be elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that processing and toughness depend on the inter-microgel connectivity, while the stress at break is solely dependent on the microgel size. These findings offer an in-depth understanding of how liquid- and paste-like precursors containing soft, deformable microgels can be processed into bulk microstructured soft materials and the effect of the size and concentration of these microgels on the mechanical properties of microgel reinforced hydrogels. Abstract
Granular hydrogels are formed through the packing of hydrogel microparticles and are emerging for various biomedical applications, including as inks for 3D printing, substrates to study cell-matrix interactions, and injectable scaffolds for tissue repair. Granular hydrogels are suited for these applications because of their unique properties including inherent porosity, shear-thinning and self-healing behavior, and tunable design. The characterization of their material properties and biological response involves technical considerations that are unique to modular systems like granular hydrogels. Here, we describe detailed methods that can be used to quantitatively characterize the rheological behavior and porosity of granular hydrogels using reagents, tools, and equipment that are typically available in biomedical engineering laboratories. In addition, we detail methods for 3D cell invasion assays using multicellular spheroids embedded within granular hydrogels and describe steps to quantify features of cell outgrowth (e.g., endothelial cell sprouting) using standard image processing software. To illustrate these methods, we provide examples where features of granular hydrogels such as the size of hydrogel microparticles and their extent of packing during granular hydrogel formation are modulated. Our intent with this resource is to increase accessibility to granular hydrogel technology and to facilitate the investigation of granular hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Extrusion bioprinting has been widely used to fabricate complicated and heterogeneous constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Despite the remarkable progress acquired so far, the exploration of qualified bioinks is still challenging, mainly due to the conflicting requirements on the printability/shape-fidelity and cell viability. Herein, a new strategy is proposed to formulate a dynamic cross-linked microgel assembly (DC-MA) bioink, which can achieve both high printability/shape-fidelity and high cell viability by strengthening intermicrogel interactions through dynamic covalent bonds while still maintaining the relatively low mechanical modulus of microgels. As a proof-of-concept, microgels are prepared by cross-linking hyaluronic acid modified with methacrylate and phenylboric acid groups (HAMA-PBA) and methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) via droplet-based microfluidics, followed by assembling into DC-MA bioink with a dynamic cross-linker (dopamine-modified hyaluronic acid, HA-DA). As a result, 2D and 3D constructs with high shape-fidelity can be printed without post-treatment, and the encapsulated L929 cells exhibit high cell viability after extrusion. Moreover, the addition of the dynamic cross-linker (HA-DA) also improves the microporosity, tissue-adhesion, and self-healing of the DC-MA bioink, which is very beneficial for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications including wound healing. We believe the present work sheds a new light on designing new bioinks for extrusion bioprinting.

Abstract
Alginate is a natural polysaccharide that typically originates from various species of algae. Due to its low cost, good biocompatibility, and rapid ionic gelation, the alginate hydrogel has become a good option of bioink source for 3D bioprinting. However, the lack of cell adhesive moieties, erratic biodegradability, and poor printability are the critical limitations of alginate hydrogel bioink. This review discusses the pivotal properties of alginate hydrogel as a bioink for 3D bioprinting technologies. Afterward, a variety of advanced material formulations and biofabrication strategies that have recently been developed to overcome the drawbacks of alginate hydrogel bioink will be focused on. In addition, the applications of these advanced solutions for 3D bioprinting of tissue/organ mimicries such as regenerative implants and in vitro tissue models using alginate-based bioink will be systematically summarized.
