Piezoelectric PVDF and its copolymers in biomedicine: innovations and applications

In recent years, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has emerged as a versatile polymer with a wide range of applications across various fields. PVDF's piezosensitivity, versatility, crystalline structure, and tunable parameters have established it as a highly sought-after material. Furthermore, PVDF and its copolymers exhibit excellent processability and chemical resistance to a diverse array of substances. Of particular significance is its remarkable structural stability in physiological media, which highlights its potential for use in the development of biomedical products. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in PVDF-based biomedical systems. It examines the fabrication of stimulus-responsive delivery systems, bioelectric therapy devices, and tissue-regenerating scaffolds, all of which harness the piezosensitivity of PVDF. Moreover, the potential of PVDF in the fabrication of both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tools is investigated, with particular emphasis on its flexibility, transparency, and piezoelectric efficiency. The material's high biocompatibility and physiological stability are of paramount importance in the development of implantable sensors for long-term health monitoring, which is crucial for the management of chronic diseases and postoperative care. Additionally, we discuss a novel approach to photoacoustic microscopy that employs a PVDF sensor, thereby eliminating the necessity for external contrast agents. This technique provides a new avenue for non-invasive imaging in biomedical applications. Finally, we explore the challenges and prospects for the development of PVDF-based systems for a range of biomedical applications. This review is distinctive in comparison to other reviews on PVDF due to its concentrated examination of biomedical applications, including pioneering imaging techniques, long-term health monitoring, and a detailed account of advancements in the field. Collectively, these elements illustrate the potential of PVDF to markedly influence biomedical engineering and patient care, distinguishing it from existing literature. By leveraging the distinctive attributes of PVDF and its copolymers, researchers can continue to advance the frontiers of biomedical engineering, with the potential to transform patient care and treatment outcomes.

Thermal Warning and Shut-down of Lithium Metal Batteries Based on Thermoresponsive Electrolytes

The thermal runaway issue represents a long-standing obstacle that retards large-scale applications of lithium metal batteries. Various approaches to inhibit thermal runaway suffer from some intrinsic drawbacks, either being irreversible or delayed thermal protection. Herein, this work has explored thermo-responsive lower critical solution temperature (LCST) ionic liquid-based electrolytes, which provides reversible overheating protection for batteries with warning and shut-down stages, well corresponding to an initial stage of thermal runaway process. The batteries could function stably below 70 °C as a working mode, while demonstrating a warning mode above 80 °C with a noticeable reduction in specific capacitance to delay temperature increase of batteries. In terms of 110 °C as a critically dangerous temperature, a shut-down mode is designed to minimize the thermal energy releasing as the batteries are barely chargeable and dischargeable. Dynamically growing polymeric particles above LCST contributed to such an intelligent and mild control on specific capacitance. Larger size will occupy larger surfaces of electrodes and close more pores of separators, enabling a gradual suppressing of Li+ transfer and reactions. The present work demonstrated a scientific design of thermoresponsive LCST electrolytes with a superiorly precise and intelligent control of electrochemical performances to achieve self-adapted overheating protections.

Intrinsically Safe Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by Thermo-Electrochemical Compatible In Situ Polymerized Solid-State Electrolytes

In situ polymerized solid-state electrolytes have attracted much attention due to high Li-ion conductivity, conformal interface contact, and low interface resistance, but are plagued by lithium dendrite, interface degradation, and inferior thermal stability, which thereby leads to limited lifespan and severe safety hazards for high-energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, an in situ polymerized electrolyte is proposed by copolymerization of 1,3-dioxolane with 1,3,5-tri glycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) as a cross-linking agent, which realizes a synergy of battery thermal safety and interface compatibility with Li anode. Functional TGIC enhances the electrolyte polymeric level. The unique carbon-formation mechanism facilitates flame retardancy and eliminates the battery fire risk. In the meantime, TGIC-derived inorganic-rich interphase inhibits interface side reactions and promotes uniform Li plating. Intrinsically safe LMBs with nonflammability and outstanding electrochemical performances under extreme temperatures (130 °C) are achieved. This functional polymer design shows a promising prospect for the development of safe LMBs.

Stability of Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3-Based Composite Electrolytes against Lithium Anodes Enhanced by Uniform Surface Coating of Two-Dimensional Graphene-like C3N4 on Particle Surfaces

All-solid-state lithium (Li) batteries have attracted considerable interest due to their potential in high energy density as well as safety. However, the realization of a stable Li/solid-state electrolyte (SSE) interface remains challenging. Herein, two-dimensional graphene-like C3N4 (g-C3N4) as a coating layer on Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) electrolyte (LATP@CN) has been applied to construct the stable Li/SSE interface. The g-C3N4 layer is uniformly coated on the LATP surface using the in situ calcination method, which not only enhances the dispersibility of LATP particles in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) through the interaction between surface functional groups but also suppresses the side reactions between Li and LATP. The coating layer can effectively improve the interfacial stability. As a result, the conductivity and stability of the obtained composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs) against Li are enhanced. The Li∥CSEs∥Li symmetric cells stably cycle for 670 and 600 h at 0.1 and 0.2 mA cm-2, respectively. The Li∥CSEs∥LiFePO4 cells stably cycle more than 100 times at 0.1 and 0.2 C with a capacity retention rate of about 86% and 88%, respectively. This work inspires a new strategy to avoid the reactions between LATP and Li.

Superspreading-Based Fabrication of Thermostable Nanoporous Polyimide Membranes for High Safety Separators of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The development of thermally stable separators is a promising approach to address the safety issues of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the serious shrinkage of commercial polyolefin separators at elevated temperatures. However, achieving controlled nanopores with a uniform size distribution in thermostable polymeric separators and high electrochemical performance is still a great challenge. In this study, nanoporous polyimide (PI) membranes with excellent thermal stability as high-safety separators is developed for LIBs using a superspreading strategy. The superspreading of polyamic acid solutions enables the generation of thin and uniform liquid layers, facilitating the formation of thin PI membranes with controllable and uniform nanopores with narrow size distribution ranging from 121 ± 5 nm to 86 ± 6 nm. Such nanoporous PI membranes display excellent structural stability at elevated temperatures up to 300 °C for at least 1 h. LIBs assembled with nanoporous PI membranes as separators show high specific capacity and Coulombic efficiency and can work normally after transient treatment at a high temperature (150 °C for 20 min) and high ambient temperature, indicating their promising application as high-safety separators for rechargeable batteries.

Network Derivation of Liquid Junction Potentials in Single-Membrane System

Peusner's network thermodynamics (PNT) is one of the more important formalisms of nonequilibrium thermodynamics used to describe membrane transport and the conversion of the internal energy of the system into energy dissipated in the environment and free energy used for the work involved in the transport of solution components in membrane processes. A procedure of transformation the Kedem-Katchalsky (K-K) equations for the transport of binary electrolytic solutions through a membrane to the Kedem-Katchalsky-Peusner (K-K-P) equations based on the PNT formalism for liquid junction potentials was developed. The subject of the study was a membrane used for hemodialysis (Ultra Flo 145 Dialyser) and aqueous NaCl solutions. The research method was the L version of the K-K-P formalism for binary electrolyte solutions. The Peusner coefficients obtained from the transformations of the K-K formalism coefficients for the transport of electrolyte solutions through the artificial polymer membrane were used to calculate the coupling coefficients of the membrane processes and to calculate the dissipative energy flux. In addition, the dissipative energy flux, as a function of thermodynamic forces, made it possible to investigate the energy conversion of transport processes in the membrane system.

In-Situ Cross-linked F- and P-Containing Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Long-Cycling and High-Safety Lithium Metal Batteries with Various Cathode Materials

The practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been hindered by limited cycle-life and safety concerns. To solve these problems, we develop a novel fluorinated phosphate cross-linker for gel polymer electrolyte in high-voltage LMBs, achieving superior electrochemical performance and high safety simultaneously. The fluorinated phosphate cross-linked gel polymer electrolyte (FP-GPE) by in-situ polymerization method not only demonstrates high oxidation stability but also exhibits excellent compatibility with lithium metal anode. LMBs utilizing FP-GPE realize stable cycling even at a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V (vs Li/Li+) with various high-voltage cathode materials. The LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2|FP-GPE|Li battery exhibits an ultralong cycle-life of 1200 cycles with an impressive capacity retention of 80.1 %. Furthermore, the FP-GPE-based batteries display excellent electrochemical performance even at practical conditions, such as high cathode mass loading (20.84 mg cm-2), ultrathin Li (20 μm), and a wide temperature range of -25 to 80 °C. Moreover, the first reported solid-state 18650 cylindrical LMBs have been successfully fabricated and demonstrate exceptional safety under mechanical abuse. Additionally, the industry-level 18650 cylindrical LiMn2O4|FP-GPE|Li4Ti5O12 cells demonstrate a remarkable cycle-life of 1400 cycles. Therefore, the impressive electrochemical performance and high safety in practical batteries demonstrate a substantial potential of well-designed FP-GPE for large-scale industrial applications.

Localized High-Concentration Sulfone Electrolytes with High-Voltage Stability and Flame Retardancy for Ni-Rich Lithium Metal Batteries

The localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) propels the advanced high-voltage battery system. Sulfone-based LHCE is a transformative direction compatible with high energy density and high safety. In this work, the application of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in the LHCE system constructed from sulfolane and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) is investigated. The addition of diluent causes an increase of contact ion pairs and ionic aggregates in the solvation cluster and an acceptable quantity of free solvent molecules. A small amount of LiFSI as an additive can synergistically decompose with TTE on the cathode and participate in the construction of both electrode interfaces. The designed electrolyte helps the Ni-rich system to cycle firmly at a high voltage of 4.5 V. Even with high mass load and lean electrolyte, it can keep a reversible specific capacity of 91.5% after 50 cycles. The constructed sulfone-based electrolyte system exhibits excellent thermal stability far beyond the commercial electrolytes. Further exploration of in-situ gelation has led to a quick conversion of the designed liquid electrolyte to the gel state, accompanied by preserved stability, which provides a direction for the synergistic development of LHCE with gel electrolytes.

An ultralight, pulverization-free integrated anode toward lithium-less lithium metal batteries

The high-capacity advantage of lithium metal anode was compromised by common use of copper as the collector. Furthermore, lithium pulverization associated with "dead" Li accumulation and electrode cracking deteriorates the long-term cyclability of lithium metal batteries, especially under realistic test conditions. Here, we report an ultralight, integrated anode of polyimide-Ag/Li with dual anti-pulverization functionality. The silver layer was initially chemically bonded to the polyimide surface and then spontaneously diffused in Li solid solution and self-evolved into a fully lithiophilic Li-Ag phase, mitigating dendrites growth or dead Li. Further, the strong van der Waals interaction between the bottommost Li-Ag and polyimide affords electrode structural integrity and electrical continuity, thus circumventing electrode pulverization. Compared to the cutting-edge anode-free cells, the batteries pairing LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 with polyimide-Ag/Li afford a nearly 10% increase in specific energy, with safer characteristics and better cycling stability under realistic conditions of 1× excess Li and high areal-loading cathode (4 milliampere hour per square centimeter).

Designing an Air-Stable Interphase on Lithium Metal Anode to Improve Cycling Performance

The application of rechargeable lithium metal batteries is challenged by intractable issues of uncontrollable Li dendrite growth that result in poor cycle life and safety risks. In this work, an air-stable interphase is developed to protect the lithium metal anode (LMA) via a facile solution-based approach. The Ag-embedded fluoride-rich interphase not only creates abundant lithiophilic sites for homogenizing Li nucleation and growth but also resists severe air erosion to protect the LMA beneath and enable decent cycling stability. As a result, the Ag-F-rich interphase enables flat Li deposition on LMA, which is clearly observed in the operando Li plating experiments. Paired with a LiFePO4 cathode (11.8 mg cm-2), the Ag-F-rich interphase-modified LMA enables 300 stable cycles at 0.5 C, delivering a capacity retention ratio as high as 91.4%. Even after being exposed to air for 1 h, the modified LMA still runs smoothly for over 120 cycles with ignorable capacity decay, exhibiting great air stability. This work proves the concept of functionalizing the interphase on the LMA to enable good cycling performance even under severe air erosion.

Ultralow thermal conductivity of W-Janus bilayers (WXY: X, Y = S, Se, and Te) for thermoelectric devices

Lattice thermal conductivity (κ) in tungsten dichalcogenide Janus (WXY, where X, Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayers and heterostructures (HSs) have been investigated using ab initio DFT simulations. Tungsten-based Janus monolayers show semiconducting behavior with the bandgap in the semiconducting range for WSSe (1.70 eV), WSTe (1.26 eV), and WSeTe (1.34 eV). When Janus monolayers are stacked to form HSs with weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, the bandgap reduces to 0.19 eV, 0.40 eV, and 0.24 eV, respectively, for WSeTe/WSTe, WSSe/WSTe, and WSSe/WSeTe HSs. Thermal vibrational characteristics of Janus monolayers are modified when these are stacked in 2D HSs with the introduction of interlayer hybrid phonon modes. Large longitudinal-transverse optical (LO-TO) splitting is noticed at the Brillouin zone-center (Γ-point): 135 cm-1, 140 cm-1, and 150 cm-1 for WSeTe/WSTe, WSSe/WSeTe and WSSe/WSTe HSs, respectively. Thermal conductivity calculations show ultra-low κ values for WSeTe/WSTe (0.01 W m-1 K-1), WSSe/WSTe (0.02 W m-1 K-1) and WSSe/WSeTe HS (0.004 W m-1 K-1) at 300 K. The results can be attributed to the hybrid phonon modes with frequencies very close to acoustic modes at the gamma point, low Debye temperature (θD) and specific heat capacity. Our results highlight the possible applications of these HSs in designing thermoelectric interfaces at the nanoscale.

New Quasi-Solid-State Li-SPAN Battery Enhanced by In Situ Thermally Polymerized Gel Polymer Electrolytes

A lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising candidate for an electrochemical energy-storage system. However, for a long time, it suffered from the "shuttle effect" of the intermediate products of soluble polysulfides and safety issues concerning the combustible liquid electrolyte and lithium anode. In this work, sulfide polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is employed as a solid cycled cathode to resolve the "shuttle effect" fundamentally, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) is matched to the SPAN cathode to minimize the safety concerns, and finally, a quasi-solid-state Li-SPAN battery is combined by an in situ thermal polymerization strategy to improve its adaptability to the existing battery assembly processes. The PEGDA-based GPE achieved at 60 °C for 40 min ensures little damage to the in situ battery, a good electrode-electrolyte interface, a high ionic conductivity of 6.87 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 °C, and a wide electrochemical window of 4.53 V. Ultimately, the as-prepared SPAN composite exerts a specific capacity of 1217.3 mAh g-1 after 250 cycles at 0.2 C with a high capacity retention rate of 89.9%. The combination of the SPAN cathode and in situ thermally polymerized PEGDA-based GPE provides a new inspiration for the design of Li-SPAN batteries with both high specific energy and high safety.

Electrochemically and Thermally Stable Inorganics-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Robust Lithium Metal Batteries

Severe dendrite growth and high-level activity of the lithium metal anode lead to a short life span and poor safety, seriously hindering the practical applications of lithium metal batteries. With a trisalt electrolyte design, an F-/N-containing inorganics-rich solid electrolyte interphase on a lithium anode is constructed, which is electrochemically and thermally stable over long-term cycles and safety abuse conditions. As a result, its Coulombic efficiency can be maintained over 98.98% for 400 cycles. An 85.0% capacity can be retained for coin-type full cells with a 3.14 mAh cm-2 LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 cathode after 200 cycles and 1.0 Ah pouch-type full cells with a 4.0 mAh cm-2 cathode after 72 cycles. During the thermal runaway tests of a cycled 1.0 Ah pouch cell, the onset and triggering temperatures were increased from 70.8 °C and 117.4 °C to 100.6 °C and 153.1 °C, respectively, indicating a greatly enhanced safety performance. This work gives novel insights into electrolyte and interface design, potentially paving the way for high-energy-density, long-life-span, and thermally safe lithium metal batteries.

Monodispersed Sub-1 nm Inorganic Cluster Chains in Polymers for Solid Electrolytes with Enhanced Li-Ion Transport

The organic-inorganic interfaces can enhance Li+ transport in composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs) due to the strong interface interactions. However, Li+ non-conductive areas in CSEs with inert fillers will hinder the construction of efficient Li+ transport channels. Herein, CSEs with fully active Li+ conductive networks are proposed to improve Li+ transport by composing sub-1 nm inorganic cluster chains and organic polymer chains. The inorganic cluster chains are monodispersed in polymer matrix by a brief mixed-solvent strategy, their sub-1 nm diameter and ultrafine dispersion state eliminate Li+ non-conductive areas in the interior of inert fillers and filler-agglomeration, respectively, providing rich surface areas for interface interactions. Therefore, the 3D networks connected by the monodispersed cluster chains finally construct homogeneous, large-scale, continuous Li+ fast transport channels. Furthermore, a conjecture about 1D oriented distribution of organic polymer chains along the inorganic cluster chains is proposed to optimize Li+ pathways. Consequently, the as-obtained CSEs possess high ionic conductivity at room temperature (0.52 mS cm-1 ), high Li+ transference number (0.62), and more mobile Li+ (50.7%). The assembled LiFePO4 /Li cell delivers excellent stability of 1000 cycles at 0.5 C and 700 cycles at 1 C. This research provides a new strategy for enhancing Li+ transport by efficient interfaces.

Three-Dimensional Octahedral Nanocrystals of Cu2O/CuF2 Grown on Porous Cu Foam Act as a Lithophilic Skeleton for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode

Metallic-lithium (Li) anodes are highly sought-after for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, the commercialization of Li anodes faces challenges, including uncontrolled dendrite growth and volume changes during cycling. To address these issues, we developed a novel three-dimensional (3D) copper current collector. Here, we propose a two-step method to fabricate Cu2O/CuF2 octahedral nanocrystals (ONCs) onto 3D Cu current collectors. The resulting Cu foam with distributed ONCs provides active electrochemical sites, promoting uniform Li nucleation and dendrite-free Li deposition. The stable Cu2O/CuF2 ONCs@CF metallic current collector serves as a reliable host for dendrite-free lithium metal anodes. Additionally, the highly porous copper foam with a preconstructed conductive framework of Cu2O/CuF2 ONCs@CF effectively reduces local current density, suppressing volume changes during Li stripping and plating. The symmetric cell using Cu2O/CuF2 ONCs@CF metallic current collector exhibits excellent stability, maintaining over 1600 h at 1 mA cm-2 and a highly stable Coulombic efficiency of 98% over 100 cycles at the same current density, outperforming Li@CuF metallic current collectors. Furthermore, in a full-cell configuration paired with nickel-rich layered oxide cathode materials (Li@Cu2O/CuF2 ONCs@CF//NMC-811), the proposed setup demonstrates exceptional rate performance and an extended cycle life. In conclusion, our work presents a promising strategy to address Li anode challenges and highlights the exceptional performance of the Cu2O/CuF2 ONCs@CF metallic current collector, offering potential for high-capacity and long-lasting lithium-based energy storage systems.

A hybrid polymer protective layer with uniform Li+ flux and self-adaption enabling dendrite-free Li metal anodes

Lithium (Li) metal is considered as an ideal negative electrode material for next-generation secondary batteries; however, the hideous dendrite growth and parasitic reactions hinder the practical applications of Li metal batteries. Herein, a hybrid polymer film composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) is adopted as an artificial protective layer to inhibit the dendritic formation and side reactions in Li metal anodes. PVA with large quantities of polar functional groups can induce even distribution of Li ions (Li+). Alternatively, PAA can in situ react with Li metal to form highly elastic and ionic conducting lithium polyacrylic acid (LiPAA), thereby enabling tight contact and flexible self-adaption with Li metal anodes. Therefore, such a rationally designed functional composite layer, with good binding ability and relatively high Li+ conductivity, as well as excellent capability of homogenizing Li+ flow, accordingly enables Li metal anodes to reveal dendrite-free plating/stripping behaviours and minimum volume variation. As a result, the PVA-PAA modified Li metal anode delivered stable cycling for 700 and 250 h, respectively, at current densities of 1 and 3 mA cm-2 under an areal capacity of 1 mA h cm-2, in a carbonate ester-based electrolyte without any additive, exhibiting boosted cycling and rate performances. The Li anode with a functional PVA-PAA hybrid interlayer can maintain the dense and smooth texture without dendrite formation after long cycles. The full cell of Li|LiFeO4 with our modified Li anode and a cathode with a high areal capacity of 2.45 mA h cm-2 delivers, change to achieved a long-term lifespan of 180 cycles at 1.0 C, with a capacity retention of 96.7%. This work demonstrates a simple and effective strategy of designing multi-functional artificial protective layers, targeting dendrite-free Li anodes.

Manipulating Sulfur Conversion Kinetics through Interfacial Built-In Electric Field Enhanced Bidirectional Mott-Schottky Electrocatalysts in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Efficient electrocatalysts and catalytic mechanisms remain a pressing need in Li-S electrochemistry to address lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and enhance conversion kinetics. This study presents the development of multifunctional VO2@rGO heterostructures, incorporating interfacial built-in electric field (BIEF) enhancement, as a Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst for Li-S batteries. Electrochemical experiments and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the interfacial BIEF between VO2 and rGO induces self-driven charge redistribution, resulting in accelerated charge transport rates, enhanced LiPS chemisorption, reduced energy barriers for Li2S nucleation/decomposition, and improved Li-ion diffusion behavior. The Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst, combining the strengths of VO2's anchoring ability, rGO's metallic conductivity, and BIEF's optimized charge transport, exhibits an outstanding "trapping-conversion" effect. The modified Li-S battery with a VO2@rGO-modified separator achieves a highly reversible capacity of 558.0 mAh g-1 at 2 C over 600 cycles, with an average decay rate of 0.048% per cycle. This research offers valuable insights into the design of Mott-Schottky electrocatalysts and their catalytic mechanisms, advancing high-efficiency Li-S batteries and other multielectron energy storage and conversion devices.

Nitrogen Ion Implantation-Modified Cu Substrate for Stable Lithium Metal Anode

As the only commercialized negative current collector, copper (Cu) foil possesses insurmountable applicational advantages as a lithium metal anode (LMA) substrate. However, the successful usage of Cu foil is limited by the poor Li affinity and crystal face variation, which will lead to severe lithium dendrite growth and poor cyclability. Herein, an industrial-popular ion implantation technique is first adopted for Cu surface modification. With the high-energy implantations of N+ plasma, the unique N-rich transition interface can be formed, among which the lithiophilic CuxNy with extended crystal domains can have uniform Cu crystal faces and offer benefit for Li nucleation/deposition; besides, the induced Li3N-rich SEI with high ionic conductivity can support Li-ion transport kinetics, suppress Li dendrite growth, and mitigate the side reaction to improve LMA stability. Consequently, a uniform Li nucleation/deposition is achieved, with obviously enhanced cycling stability and rate capability for the full cells. This technological maturity ion implantation method can be readily extended to any non/metallic ion species, or joint implantation of bi/multiple ions, and other substrates, demonstrating a possible route to surmount the metal anode challenges.
