Abstract
The formation of secondary sulphate minerals such as thaumasite, ettringite and gypsum is a process causing severe damage to concrete constructions. A major key to understand the complex reactions, involving concrete deterioration is to decipher the cause of its appearance, including the sources of the involved elements. In the present study, sulphate attack on the concrete of two Austrian tunnels is investigated. The distribution of stable sulphur isotopes is successfully applied to decipher the source(s) of sulphur in the deteriorating sulphate-bearing minerals. Interestingly, δ(34)S values of sulphate in local groundwater and in the deteriorating minerals are mostly in the range from+14 to+27 ‰. These δ(34)S values match the isotope patterns of regional Permian and Triassic marine evaporites. Soot relicts from steam- and diesel-driven trains found in one of the tunnels show δ(34)S values from-3 to+5 ‰, and are therefore assumed to be of minor importance for sulphate attack on the concretes. In areas of pyrite-containing sedimentary rocks, the δ(34)S values of sulphate from damaged concrete range between-1 and+11 ‰. The latter range reflects the impact of sulphide oxidation on local groundwater sulphate.

Abstract
The sulphur isotope composition of the epiphytic lichens, Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl and Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf, of the terricolous lichens, Cladina sp. and Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd., and of pine bark, at 31 sites in Finland, appeared to be dependent on lichen and tree species. The negative correlation of sulphur isotope composition with sulphur content was highly significant (P<0.001) in H. physodes and significant (P<0.01) in Pseudevernia furfuracea and Peltigera aphthosa. No correlation between the sulphur isotope composition and sulphur content was found for Cladina sp. and pine bark. The sulphur isotope compositions displayed statistically significant regional variation from south to north. Microenvironmental factors were considered, including phorophyte species and the chemical form of sulphur.

Abstract
Sulfur released from any given natural or anthropogenic source carries an isotopic signature that can be used to trace its flow through the environment. Measurements of the concentration and isotopic composition of sulfur in weekly bulk precipitation samples collected over a 4-year period at a remote location in northern Ontario were recorded. The long-term isotopic data and the measurement on the production and release of dimethyl sulfide from boreal wetlands show that biogenic sources can account for up to 30 percent of the acidifying sulfur burden in the atmosphere in remote areas of Canada. The data suggest that significant biological reemission of anthropogenic sulfur is occurring. The role of this process in the continuing acidification of the environment for years to come must be a matter of concern.
