Abstract
Food availability has been endangered by recent global events, where agriculture, the main food source for the global population, is expected to increase even more to fulfill the growing food demand. Along with food production, water and energy consumption are also increased, leading to over-extraction of groundwater and an excess emission of greenhouse gases due to fossil fuel consumption. In this context, a balance of these three resources is crucial; therefore, the water-energy-food nexus is considered to address the previous issues by designing an energy-water management system based on robust predictive control. This controller estimates the future worst-case scenario for multiple climatic conditions, such as solar radiation, ambient temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and groundwater recharge, to define an optimal irrigation volume, maximize crop growth, and minimize water consumption. At the same time, the controller schedules daily irrigation and groundwater extraction, considering energy availability from solar generation and storage, to fulfill the previously defined irrigation volume while minimizing operating costs. Climate prediction is done through fuzzy prediction intervals, whose lower or upper bound are used as worst-case to include climate uncertainty on the controller design. The energy-water management system is tested in different experiments, where results show that considering a robust approach ensures maximum crop development, avoids over-extraction of groundwater, and prioritizes renewable energy sources. This work proposes a robust energy-water management system designed to be sustainable. Considering the water-energy-food nexus, the system ensures food security and proper resource allocation, tackling global starvation, water availability, and energy access.

Abstract
The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major rice pest in various Asian countries, causing significant negative impacts on rice yield and quality. In this study, we developed a novel nanoplatform (NIT@MON@CuS) for pesticide delivery that responds to redox and near-infrared light stimuli. The nanoplatform consisted of CuS nanoparticles with mesoporous organic silica (MON), loaded with nitenpyram (NIT). With an average size of 190 nm and a loading efficiency of 22%, NIT@MON@CuS exhibited remarkable thermal response in the near-infrared region, demonstrating excellent photothermal conversion ability and stability. In vitro release kinetics demonstrated the rapid release of nitenpyram under near-infrared light and glutathione conditions, facilitating a satisfactory temperature increase and accelerated drug release. The NIT@MON@CuS-treated group exhibited a higher mortality of N. lugens, increasing from 62 to 88% compared to the group treated with nitenpyram technical after 96 h. Bioassay revealed that NIT@MON@CuS significantly enhanced nitenpyram toxicity by more than 1.4-fold against both laboratory insecticide-resistant and field strains of N. lugens. Furthermore, RT-qPCR results demonstrated that MON@CuS had the capability to reduce P450 gene expression, thereby improving the sensitivity of N. lugens to insecticides. These findings suggest that MON@CuS holds great potential as an intelligent pest control platform, offering a sustainable and efficient approach to protect crops against pests.

Abstract
Agricultural activities at lower temperatures lead to lower yields due to reduced plant growth. Applying photomolecular heater agrochemicals could boost yields under these conditions, but UV-induced degradation of these compounds needs to be assessed. In this study, we employ liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) coupled with infrared ion spectroscopy (IRIS) to detect and identify the degradation products generated upon simulated solar irradiation of sinapoyl malate, a proposed photomolecular heater/UV filter compound. All major irradiation-induced degradation products are identified in terms of their full molecular structure by comparing the IRIS spectra obtained after LC fractionation and mass isolation with reference IR spectra obtained from quantum-chemical calculations. In cases where physical standards are available, a direct experimental-to-experimental comparison is possible for definitive structure identification. We find that the major degradation products originate from trans-to-cis isomerization, ester cleavage, and esterification reactions of sinapoyl malate. Preliminary in silico toxicity investigations using the VEGAHUB platform suggest no significant concerns for these degradation products' human and environmental safety. The identification workflow presented here can analogously be applied to break down products from other agrochemical compounds. As the method records IR spectra with the sensitivity of LC-MS, application to agricultural samples, e.g., from field trials, is foreseen.

Abstract
Feeding 9-10 billion people by 2050 and preventing dangerous climate change are two of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Both challenges must be met while reducing the impact of land management on ecosystem services that deliver vital goods and services, and support human health and well-being. Few studies to date have considered the interactions between these challenges. In this study we briefly outline the challenges, review the supply- and demand-side climate mitigation potential available in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use AFOLU sector and options for delivering food security. We briefly outline some of the synergies and trade-offs afforded by mitigation practices, before presenting an assessment of the mitigation potential possible in the AFOLU sector under possible future scenarios in which demand-side measures codeliver to aid food security. We conclude that while supply-side mitigation measures, such as changes in land management, might either enhance or negatively impact food security, demand-side mitigation measures, such as reduced waste or demand for livestock products, should benefit both food security and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. Demand-side measures offer a greater potential (1.5-15.6 Gt CO2 -eq. yr(-1) ) in meeting both challenges than do supply-side measures (1.5-4.3 Gt CO2 -eq. yr(-1) at carbon prices between 20 and 100 US$ tCO2 -eq. yr(-1) ), but given the enormity of challenges, all options need to be considered. Supply-side measures should be implemented immediately, focussing on those that allow the production of more agricultural product per unit of input. For demand-side measures, given the difficulties in their implementation and lag in their effectiveness, policy should be introduced quickly, and should aim to codeliver to other policy agenda, such as improving environmental quality or improving dietary health. These problems facing humanity in the 21st Century are extremely challenging, and policy that addresses multiple objectives is required now more than ever.

Abstract
One of the greatest challenges we face in the twenty-first century is to sustainably feed nine to ten billion people by 2050 while at the same time reducing environmental impact (e.g. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, biodiversity loss, land use change and loss of ecosystem services). To this end, food security must be delivered. According to the United Nations definition, ‘food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life’. At the same time as delivering food security, we must also reduce the environmental impact of food production. Future climate change will make an impact upon food production. On the other hand, agriculture contributes up to about 30% of the anthropogenic GHG emissions that drive climate change. The aim of this review is to outline some of the likely impacts of climate change on agriculture, the mitigation measures available within agriculture to reduce GHG emissions and outlines the very significant challenge of feeding nine to ten billion people sustainably under a future climate, with reduced emissions of GHG. Each challenge is in itself enormous, requiring solutions that co-deliver on all aspects. We conclude that the status quo is not an option, and tinkering with the current production systems is unlikely to deliver the food and ecosystems services we need in the future; radical changes in production and consumption are likely to be required over the coming decades.
