Abstract
Erysipelothrix spp., including E. rhusiopathiae, are zoonotic bacterial pathogens that can cause morbidity and mortality in mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, and humans. The southern sea otter (SSO; Enhydra lutris nereis) is a federally-listed threatened species for which infectious disease is a major cause of mortality. We estimated the frequency of detection of these opportunistic pathogens in dead SSOs, described pathology associated with Erysipelothrix infections in SSOs, characterized the genetic diversity and antimicrobial susceptibility of SSO isolates, and evaluated the virulence of two novel Erysipelothrix isolates from SSOs using an in vivo fish model. From 1998 to 2021 Erysipelothrix spp. were isolated from six of >500 necropsied SSOs. Erysipelothrix spp. were isolated in pure culture from three cases, while the other three were mixed cultures. Bacterial septicemia was a primary or contributing cause of death in five of the six cases. Other pathology observed included suppurative lymphadenopathy, fibrinosuppurative arteritis with thrombosis and infarction, bilateral uveitis and endophthalmitis, hypopyon, petechia and ecchymoses, mucosal infarction, and suppurative meningoencephalitis and ventriculitis. Short to long slender Gram-positive or Gram-variable bacterial rods were identified within lesions, alone or with other opportunistic bacteria. All six SSO isolates had the spaA genotype-four isolates clustered with spaA E. rhusiopathiae strains from various terrestrial and marine animal hosts. Two isolates did not cluster with any known Erysipelothrix spp.; whole genome sequencing revealed a novel Erysipelothrix species and a novel E. rhusiopathiae subspecies. We propose the names Erysipelothrix enhydrae sp. nov. and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae ohloneorum ssp. nov. respectively. The type strains are E. enhydrae UCD-4322-04 and E. rhusiopathiae ohloneorum UCD-4724-06, respectively. Experimental injection of tiger barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona) resulted in infection and mortality from the two novel Erysipelothrix spp. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Erysipelothrix isolates from SSOs shows similar susceptibility profiles to isolates from other terrestrial and aquatic animals. This is the first description of the pathology, microbial characteristics, and genetic diversity of Erysipelothrix isolates recovered from diseased SSOs. Methods presented here can facilitate case recognition, aid characterization of Erysipelothrix isolates, and illustrate assessment of virulence using fish models.

Abstract
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a pleomorphic Gram-positive bacillus, zoonotic pathogen of mammals, birds and fish. Human disease caused by this organism most commonly occurs following occupational or recreational exposure to infected animals and typically presents as a localised cutaneous disease. Invasive infection resulting in bacteraemia, endocarditis or other distant sequelae is infrequently seen. Most commonly, invasive infection is seen in patients with predisposing risk factors including diabetes, immunocompromising conditions, alcohol use disorder or chronic kidney disease. The organism is highly susceptible to penicillin-class drugs which serve as first-line antimicrobial therapy with prolonged courses typically prescribed for invasive disease, given the predilection of this organism to cause endocarditis. In this report, we present an interesting case of a polymicrobial finger abscess with E. rhusiopathiae bacteraemia following laceration with a fish spine in an immunocompetent patient in Southern US state. This bacteraemic episode was successfully treated with a fluoroquinolone course owing to patient's penicillin allergy.

Abstract
We report here an atypical case of acute sacroiliitis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae revealing tricuspid endocarditis in a 53-year-old woman without medical history. She was admitted to Cayenne hospital because of intense right hip and thigh pain, associated with fever. A right sacroiliitis was visible on the computed tomography (CT) scan, confirmed on MRI. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a large mobile tricuspid vegetation. Blood cultures were positive for E. rhusiopathiae. CT scan showed pulmonary alveolar opacities, consistent with septic emboli. Clinical improvement was obtained under ceftriaxone followed by ciprofloxacin for 6 weeks of treatment. We present a review of bone and joint infections caused by E. rhusiopathiae. So far, not a single case has been reported in Latin America.

Abstract
Three novel, anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria were isolated from the eggshell of two separate white leghorn chicken flocks and the ileum of a healthy pig, and designated MMM721T, ISU324 and PIG517 respectively. Cells were pleomorphic and capable of forming long chains of rods or coccoid clusters. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences identified these strains to be within the genus Turicibacter, of which only one species, Turicibacter sanguinis, has been formally described. However, whole genome sequencing of novel isolates returned a digital DNA-DNA hybridization value of 22.5 % and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values of 76.4 % (ANIb) and 86.0 % (ANIm), indicating divergence between the type strain MMM721T and T. sanguinis, suggesting the strains represented a novel species. The major fatty acid methyl esters of strain MMM721T were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c and C18 : 0. The strains mainly produced the volatile fatty acid lactate, along with smaller amounts of acetate and butyrate. Together, these data indicate that MMM721T, along with ISU324 and PIG517, represent a novel species within the genus Turicibacter. We propose the name Turicibacter bilis sp. nov. for the species. The type strain is MMM721T (=ATCC TSD-238T=CCUG 74757T).

Abstract
CASE We report the case of an immunosuppressed 65-year-old man with prosthetic joint infection (PJI) 23 years postoperatively because of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, through hematogenous seeding of cutaneous erysipeloid. Immunotherapy was discontinued, washout was performed, and antimicrobial therapy was guided by laboratory sensitivities. The patient was discharged on suppressive oral ciprofloxacin monotherapy. First-stage revision was performed at 5 months after presentation-subsequent aspiration at 1 year postoperatively demonstrated no organisms and no leucocytes. At 18-month follow-up, the patient continues to do well and has elected not to proceed with second-stage surgery. CONCLUSION E. rhusiopathiae is a rarely seen pathogen in PJI-it should be considered with immunosuppression and relevant exposure risks. The patient achieved good clinical outcome and has experienced no sequelae to date.

Abstract
We present a case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae spondylodiscitis in an otherwise healthy man, occurring 1 year after exposure. The patient was cured after 6 weeks of treatment with amoxicillin followed by ciprofloxacin without surgery. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae can cause severe osteoarticular infections with a delayed presentation following exposure to the pathogen.

Abstract
Background Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a zoonotic pathogen that causes erysipeloid and is most frequently associated with exposure to domestic swine. Infection of native and prosthetic joints is a rarely reported manifestation. Case presentation We describe a case of E. rhusiopathiae prosthetic joint infection in a woman with a history of exposure to wild animals in the Canadian Arctic. Patient management involved a 1-stage surgical revision exchange with an antibiotic impregnated cement spacer and 6 weeks of intravenous penicillin G followed by 6 weeks of oral amoxicillin. Ten previously reported cases of E. rhusiopathiae joint infection are reviewed. Recent increases in mortality due to infection with this organism among host animal populations in the Canadian Arctic have generated concern regarding a potential increase in human infections. However, whole genome sequencing (WGS) of the organism was unable to identify a zoonotic origin for this case. Conclusions Consideration should be given to E. rhusiopathiae as a cause of joint infections if the appropriate epidemiologic and host risk factors exist. Expanded use of WGS in other potential animal hosts and environmental sources may provide important epidemiologic information in determining the source of human infections.

Abstract
We report the case of a 12-year-old boy who experienced recurrent suppurative arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint after near simultaneous exposure to a frog, a dog bite and lake water. Anaerobic cultures of synovial fluid obtained during operative debridement grew small round gray colonies ultimately identified as Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae by routine laboratory tests and mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an established animal pathogen while the zoonotic infections in humans are rarely reported. Infections occur after exposure to animals or animal products that are mostly occupational in adults. Here we report in a child for the first time septic arthritis and osteomyelitis without an identifiable risk factor. A 5-year-old male child was admitted with pain in the left hip joint and inability to bear weight on the limb. Clinical examination followed by radiological and magnetic resonance imaging was suggestive of septic arthritis. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae grew from peroperative joint specimen. The infection was resolved following arthrotomy, joint lavage and antibiotic therapy.

Abstract
We report a case of bacterial endocarditis due to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in a homeless man with no animal exposure. His course was complicated by an allergic reaction to ampicillin, urinary bladder infection, respiratory failure, and acute kidney injury. He recovered completely after aortic valve replacement and a 6-week course of intravenous ceftriaxone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobe found worldwide and is most commonly associated with skin disease in swine, while anecdotal reports of cases in dogs have been associated with endocarditis. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Clinicians should consider systemic infectious diseases as a potential cause of erythematous skin lesions. ANIMALS A 5-year-old female spayed Labrador retriever presented with lethargy, anorexia and erythematous skin lesions while receiving immunosuppressive therapy for immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. Four days prior to presentation, the dog had chewed on a raw turkey carcase. METHODS Complete blood count, serum chemistry profile, urinalysis and blood cultures. RESULTS Blood cultures yielded a pure growth of E. rhusiopathiae serotype 1b. Amoxicillin 22 mg/kg orally twice daily for 2 weeks and discontinuation of azathioprine resulted in remission of fever and skin lesions. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE This report is the first documentation, to the best of the authors' knowledge, of Erysipelothrix infection, a known zoonosis, in an immunosuppressed dog, highlighting the need for infectious disease monitoring in patients receiving such therapy. This information may also help educate veterinarians to include Erysipelothrix infection as a differential diagnosis in dogs with fever and skin lesions, as well as the role of blood cultures in diagnosing this disease.

Abstract
A 42-year-old female who was a voluntary worker in a school for handicapped children was referred to us for surgery for active infective endocarditis. Trans-esophageal echocardiography showed 2 large mobile vegetations on the aortic valve and severe aortic regurgitation. Aortic valve replacement was performed to prevent septic embolism and deterioration of congestive heart failure. The empiric therapy with vancomycin, ampicillin, and gentamycin was initiated because a pathogen was not identified. But Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (gram-positive rod) was isolated on the 4th day after surgery. The target therapy with penicillin G and clindamycin was started and continued for 4 weeks after surgery. The inflammatory parameters improved steadily and the patient was discharged on the 36th day after surgery. Infective endocarditis due to gram-positive rods can be easily mistaken for streptococci or dismissed as a skin contamination. But, E. rhusiopathiae endocarditis should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
One hundred and fifty-one Erysipelothrix spp. isolates from diseased and carrier swine from Brazil were identified by PCR, submitted to serotyping and analyzed by amplified fragment length polymorphism with a single enzyme (AFLP). Reference strains from Australia and the United Kingdom were also examined. The 151 strains were classified into 18 different serotypes (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24 and 25), being serotype 2b the most frequent (39.7%). By associating serotyping and PCR results, it was possible to identify 146 strains as E. rhusiopathiae and five strains as E. tonsillarum. Despite the fact that for this genus AFLP did not cluster all isolates according to serotype, origin, disease or isolation data, the execution of the technique was easy and fast, demonstrating high discriminatory power. The results produced by the AFLP analysis of Erysipelothrix spp. could also support its use as a discriminatory tool for E. rhusiopathiae and E. tonsillarum species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Baker-Rosenbach's erysipeloid is a skin infection caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. It occurs essentially in humans exposed to animals colonized with this germ such as swine. The typical skin lesion, an erythematous macule generally localized to inoculation site, frequently in the extremities, quickly resolves spontaneously. The lips are an atypical site of this infection. We describe a case of chronic granulomatosis cheilitis in a farmer caused by E. rhusiopathiae. CASE REPORT A 40-year-old farmer, a wild-boar hunter and chronic smoker with no history of tuberculosis, injury or insect bites, presented at our dermatology unit with ulcerative macrocheilitis of the lower lip ongoing for 1 year. Its surface was purulent. A biopsy specimen showed non-caseating epithelioid granulomas. Laboratory and radiological screening for tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and Crohn's disease, and parasitological examination for Leishmaniasis proved negative. Bacteriological examination identified E. rhusiopathiae and labial Baker-Rosenbach's erysipeloid was diagnosed. The lesion healed after 15 days of treatment with parenteral penicillin G (12m IU/d), totally disappearing after 3 months. DISCUSSION Swine erysipelas usually occurs in man as Baker-Rosenbach's erysipeloid. This localized form of infection with E. rhusiopathiae is the most frequent and the lesion typically observed is a violaceous plaque, less inflammatory with induration; spontaneous regression occurs after a mean 3 months. To our knowledge, this case is the first report of ulceration associated with macrocheilitis. Histologically, the granuloma directed our investigation towards the principal aetiologies of granulomatosis cheilitis, such as tuberculosis considering the epidemiological context, sarcoidosis or Crohn's disease. The diagnosis of erysipeloid was supported by epidemiological evidence (occupational exposure), isolation of the germ at the lesion and its regression on treatment with penicillin G. CONCLUSION Diagnosis of E. rhusiopathiae infection was confirmed by bacteriology. However, the hypothesis concerning the pathogenesis of its chronic course in our patient remains a subject of discussion.

She had been in contact with swine at home. We review the seven previous reports of septic arthritis due to E. rhusiopathiae.

Abstract
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative, non-spore-forming, non-acid-fast, small, Gram-positive bacillus. The organism was first established as a human pathogen late in the nineteenth century. Three forms of human disease have been recognised since then. These include a localised cutaneous lesion form, erysipeloid, a generalised cutaneous form and a septicaemic form often associated with endocarditis. The organism is ubiquitous and able to persist for a long period of time in the environment, including marine locations. It is a pathogen or a commensal in a wide variety of wild and domestic animals, birds and fish. Swine erysipelas caused by E. rhusiopathiae is the disease of greatest prevalence and economic importance. Diseases in other animals include erysipelas of farmed turkeys, chickens, ducks and emus, and polyarthritis in sheep and lambs. Infection due to E. rhusiopathiae in humans is occupationally related, principally occurring as a result of contact with contaminated animals, their products or wastes, or soil. Erysipeloid is the most common form of infections in humans. While it has been suggested that the incidence of human infection could be declining due to technological advances in animal industries, infection still occurs in specific environments. Additionally, infection by the organism is possibly under-diagnosed due to the resemblance it bears to other infections, and problems encountered in isolation and identification. Various virulence factors have been suggested as being involved in the pathogenicity of E. rhusiopathiae. The presence of a hyaluronidase and neuraminidase has been recognised, and it was shown that neuraminidase plays a significant role in bacterial attachment and subsequent invasion into host cells. The role of hyaluronidase in the disease process is controversial. The presence of a heat labile capsule has been reported as important in virulence. Control of animal disease by sound husbandry, herd management, good sanitation and immunization procedures is recommended.

Abstract
Erysipeloid is an occupational infection of the skin caused by traumatic penetration of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. The disease is characterized clinically by an erythematous oedema, with well-defined and raised borders, usually localized to the back of one hand and/or fingers. Vesicular, bullous and erosive lesions may also be present. The lesion may be asymptomatic or accompanied by mild pruritus, pain and fever. In addition to cutaneous infection, E. rhusiopathiae can cause endocarditis, which may be acute or subacute. Endocarditis is rare and has a male predilection. It usually occurs in previously damaged valves, predominantly the aortic valve. Endocarditis does not occur in patients with valvular prostheses and is not associated with intravenous drug misuse. Diagnosis of localized erysipeloid is based on the patient's history (occupation, previous traumatic contact with infected animals or their meat) and clinical picture (typical skin lesions, lack of severe systemic features, slight laboratory abnormalities and rapid remission after treatment with penicillin or cephalosporin).

Abstract
We report a case of erysipeloid in a 73-year-old woman. The disease was characterized clinically by erythematous and erosive lesions on three fingers of the left hand. Diagnosis was made based on the patient's occupation (housewife), history of previous traumatic contact with a scorpion fish, typical inflammatory lesions located on one hand, lack of severe systemic features, mild laboratory abnormalities and rapid remission after specific treatment.

Abstract
Infection with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae has a significant economic impact on pig production systems worldwide. Both inactivated and attenuated vaccines are available to prevent development of clinical signs of swine erysipelas. The ability of a live attenuated E. rhusiopathiae strain to become persistently established in pigs after intranasal exposure and its potential to cause clinical signs consistent with swine erysipelas after being administered directly into the nasopharynx of healthy pigs was evaluated. Five, E. rhusiopathiae-negative pigs were vaccinated by deep intranasal inoculation then followed for 14 days. Nasal swabs were collected daily for 5 days and clinical observations were made daily for 14 days post-vaccination. Nasal swabs were cultured for E. rhusiopathiae with the intent of back-passaging any recovered organisms into subsequent replicates. No organism was recovered from nasal swabs in the first vaccination replicate. A second replicate including 10 pigs was initiated and followed in an identical manner to that described above. Again, no E. rhusiopathiae was recovered from any pigs. No pigs in either replicate showed any signs of clinical swine erysipelas. The live attenuated E. rhusiopathiae strain evaluated in this study did not appear to become persistently established in pigs post-vaccination, did not cause any local or systemic signs consistent with swine erysipelas, and was therefore unlikely to revert to a virulent state when used in a field setting.

Abstract
A 47-year-old man presented with headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. Laboratory findings including analysis of cerebrospinal fluid suggested bacterial meningitis. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was identified in cultures of cerebrospinal fluid. The patient recovered without any neurological sequelae after antimicrobial treatment. It is interesting that intracranial infection by E. rhusiopathiae reappeared after scores of years and that it presented with absence of an underlying cause or bacteraemia.

Abstract
Wounds sustained in oceans, lakes, and streams are exposed to a milieu of bacteria rarely encountered in typical land-based injuries. These include Vibrio species, Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas and Plesiomonas species, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Mycobacterium marinum, and other microbes. Failure to recognize and treat these less common pathogens in a timely manner may result in significant morbidity or death. Initial antibiotic therapy should address common gram-positive and gram-negative aquatic bacteria, depending on the environment. Trauma occurring in brackish or salt water should be treated with doxycycline and ceftazidime, or a fluoroquinolone (eg, ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin). Freshwater wounds should be managed with ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, or a third- or fourth-generation cephalosporin (eg, ceftazidime). Injuries sustained in a marine or freshwater environment may result from bites or venomous stings of aquatic organisms as well as from accidental trauma. Musculoskeletal trauma caused by venomous underwater species (eg, stingrays, stinging fish, sea urchins, and coral) requires immediate neutralization of the heat-labile toxin with immersion in nonscalding water for 30 to 90 minutes. Appropriate management of aquatic wounds requires recognition of the mechanism of injury, neutralization of venom, antibiotic administration, radiographic assessment, surgical débridement with irrigation, wound cultures, and structural repair or amputation as indicated by the severity of the injury.

Abstract
We describe a middle-aged lady with systemic lupus erythematosus who presented with chronic left knee monoarthritis without constitutional symptoms. The histology of synovial tissue taken at arthroscopy showed acute inflammation and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, identified with some difficulty, was isolated from the enrichment broth only. Blood cultures were negative. Her history revealed significant exposure to pond fish. She responded well to intravenous penicillin and remains well 12 months later.

Abstract
A case of septic arthritis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, after an arthroscopically assisted anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) substitution in a non-immunosuppressed patient is described. An 18-year-old man underwent an ACL reconstruction with a quadruple hamstring graft. Eight days postoperatively, the patient developed fever, knee pain, and effusion without erythema or suppuration. He was readmitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of septic arthritis. The patient's erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein level, and white blood cell count were high. The joint was aspirated and the fluid was sent for cultures that revealed the presence of E rhusiopathiae. E rhusiopathiae is widespread in nature, it is transmitted by direct cutaneous laceration, and it causes septic arthritis, meningitis, endocarditis, and renal failure in immunosuppressed people with poor prognosis. In our case, the infection was treated with arthroscopic lavage and debridement, retention of the graft and hardware, and intravenous antibiotic administration for 6 weeks, followed by oral administration for 16 weeks.

Abstract
AIM Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae causes the occupationally-related infection erysipeloid in humans, and may be responsible for infections in lobster fishermen in Western Australia. There are little recent data pertaining to antimicrobial susceptibility, or susceptibility to disinfectants that might be used in the environment. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of E. rhusiopathiae from human, animal and environmental sources to various antimicrobial agents and disinfectants. METHODS The susceptibility of 60 E rhusiopathiae isolates was determined using a recommended agar dilution procedure. Susceptibility to disinfectants was achieved using a broth microdilution method. RESULTS Penicillin and ceftriaxone, with low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) (MIC90 0.03 mg/l and 0.125 mg/l, respectively), remained active against E. rhusiopathiae and should continue to be recommended for treatment. Ciprofloxacin MICs were particularly low (MIC90 0.06 mg/l), offering an alternative agent for the penicillin allergic patient. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is still resistant to vancomycin (MIC90 64 mg/l), highlighting the importance of early diagnosis of E. rhusiopathiae infection in cases of endocarditis. In addition, 31 E. rhusiopathiae isolates were tested against several commercially available home disinfectants. Most were effective in killing E. rhusiopathiae with minimum bactericidal concentrations of 0.001% for Pine O Cleen, and 0.03% for Domestos, Linely and the Wheelie Bin Phenyl Cleanser. CONCLUSIONS There appeared to be no new emergence of antibiotic resistance in E. rhusiopathiae. Various disinfectants could be used following mechanical cleaning of work environments, such as fishing boats, and equipment, to reduce the risk of infection with E. rhusiopathiae.

Abstract
We report here the first analysis of Erysipelothrix spp. using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Seventy strains of Erysipelothrix spp. were analyzed. SmaI, AscI, and NotI were tested for the ability to cleave the DNA extracted from those strains, and among them, SmaI was the most reliable enzyme. Sixty-three distinct PFGE patterns were produced, and no DNA degradation was observed, allowing the identification of all of the strains. Based on these results and on those of a previous analysis using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA and ribotyping, PFGE with SmaI might be considered to be more sensitive than those methods and to be the best method for epidemiological studies of strains of this genus.
