Draft Genome Sequence of Enterobacter hormaechei ENT5, a Component of the Symbiotic Community of Tephritid Flies

Assessment of the Entomopathogenic Potential of Fungal and Bacterial Isolates from Fall Armyworm Cadavers Against Spodoptera frugiperda Caterpillars and the Adult Boll Weevil, Anthonomus grandis

Increased attention is being focused on the biological control of agricultural pests using microorganisms, owing to their potential as a viable substitute for chemical control methods. Insect cadavers constitute a potential source of entomopathogenic microorganisms. We tested whether bacteria and fungi isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) cadavers could affect its survival, development, egg-laying pattern, and hatchability, as well as induce mortality in Anthonomus grandis Boheman adults. We isolated the bacteria Enterobacter hormaechei and Serratia marcescens and the fungi Scopulariopsis sp. and Aspergillus nomiae from fall armyworm cadavers and the pest insects were subjected to an artificial diet enriched with bacteria cells or fungal spores to be tested, in the case of S. frugiperda, and only fungal spores in the case of A. grandis. Enterobacter hormaechei and A. nomiae were pathogenic to S. frugiperda, affecting the survival of adults and pupae. The fungus Scopulariopsis sp. does not affect the survival of S. frugiperda caterpillars and pupae; however, due to late action, moths and eggs may be affected. Aspergillus nomiae also increased mortality of A. grandis adults, as well as the development of S. frugiperda in the early stages of exposure to the diet, as indicated by the vertical spore transfer to offspring and low hatchability. Enterobacter hormaechei and A. nomiae are potential biocontrol agents for these pests, and warrant further investigation from a toxicological point of view and subsequently in field tests involving formulations that could improve agricultural sustainability practices.

Genomic characterization of Enterobacter xiangfangensis STP-3: Application to real time petroleum oil sludge bioremediation

Sustainable treatment of petroleum oil sludge still remains as a major challenge to petroleum refineries. Bioremediation is the promising technology involving bacteria for simultaneous production of biosurfactant and followed by degradation of petroleum compounds. Complete genomic knowledge on such potential microbes could accentuate its successful exploitation. The present study discusses the genomic characteristics of novel biosurfactant producing petrophilic/ petroleum hydrocarbon degrading strain, Enterobacter xiangfangensis STP-3, isolated from petroleum refinery oil sludge contaminated soil. The genome has 4,584,462 bp and 4372 protein coding sequences. Functional analysis using the RAST and KEGG databases revealed the presence of biosynthetic gene clusters linked to glycolipid and lipopeptide production and multiple key candidate genes linked with the degradation pathway of petroleum hydrocarbons. Orthology study revealed diversity in gene clusters associated to membrane transport, carbohydrate, amino acid metabolism, virulence and defence mechanisms, and nucleoside and nucleotide synthesis. The comparative analysis with 27 other genomes predicted that the core genome contributes to its inherent bioremediation potential, whereas the accessory genome influences its environmental adaptability in unconventional environmental conditions. Further, experimental results showed that E. xiangfangensis STP-3 was able to degrade PHCs by 82 % in 14 days during the bioremediation of real time petroleum oil sludge with the concomitant production of biosurfactant and metabolic enzymes, To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive genomic study has been previously reported on the biotechnological prospective of this species.

Update of the list of QPS-recommended biological agents intentionally added to food or feed as notified to EFSA 14: suitability of taxonomic units notified to EFSA until March 2021

The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach was developed to provide a regularly updated generic pre-evaluation of the safety of biological agents, intended for addition to food or feed, to support the work of EFSA's Scientific Panels. The QPS approach is based on an assessment of published data for each agent, with respect to its taxonomic identity, the body of relevant knowledge, safety concerns and occurrence of antimicrobial resistance. Safety concerns identified for a taxonomic unit (TU) are, where possible, confirmed at the species/strain or product level and reflected by 'qualifications'. In the period covered by this statement, no new information was found that would change the status of previously recommended QPS TUs. Schizochytrium limacinum, which is a synonym for Aurantiochytrium limacinum, was added to the QPS list. Of the 78 microorganisms notified to EFSA between October 2020 and March 2021, 71 were excluded; 16 filamentous fungi, 1 Dyella spp., 1 Enterococcus faecium, 7 Escherichia coli, 1 Streptomyces spp., 1 Schizochytrium spp. and 44 TUs that had been previously evaluated. Seven TUs were evaluated: Corynebacterium stationis and Kodamaea ohmeri were re-assessed because an update was requested for the current mandate. Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus, Bacillus paralicheniformis, Enterobacter hormaechei, Eremothecium ashbyi and Lactococcus garvieae were assessed for the first time. The following TUs were not recommended for QPS status: A. caldiproteolyticus due to the lack of a body of knowledge in relation to its use in the food or feed chain, E. hormaechei, L. garvieae and K. ohmeri due to their pathogenic potential, E. ashbyi and C. stationis due to a lack of body of knowledge on their occurrence in the food and feed chain and to their pathogenic potential. B. paralicheniformis was recommended for the QPS status with the qualification 'absence of toxigenic activity' and 'absence of genetic information to synthesize bacitracin'.
