Abstract
This study aimed to identify the biochemical parameters that determine the occurrence of glaucoma and assess the correlation between oxidative stress and clinical data in patients with glaucoma and healthy controls. We enrolled 169 participants; the glaucoma group comprised 104 patients with primary open-angle, pseudoexfoliation, or angle-closure glaucoma, and the control group comprised 65 healthy individuals. Serum concentrations of selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn); Cu/Zn ratio; and total antioxidant status were measured in both groups. Significantly lower Se and Zn serum levels were observed in men (67.7 ± 17.14 g/L and 0.76 ± 0.11 mg/L, respectively) and women (68.73 ± 16.21 g/L and 0.76 ± 0.13, respectively) with glaucoma. Moreover, significant correlations were identified between serum Se concentration and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and between serum Cu concentration and CDVA (p < 0.005 and p < 0.05, respectively). We also observed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.244, p < 0.05) between pRNFL thickness and BMI and a negative correlation (r = -0.289, p < 0.05) between serum Se concentration and the age of male patients with glaucoma. Additionally, the percentages of participants with below-normal, normal, and above-normal Se, Zn, and total antioxidant capacity serum levels were compared between both groups. Compared with healthy controls, a significantly higher percentage of patients with glaucoma had a below-normal Se serum concentration. A notable negative correlation was observed between Zn and copper serum levels of patients with glaucoma in both sexes. We believe that this study serves as a basis for considering personalized nutritional therapy for the prevention and supportive treatment of patients with glaucoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate intraocular pressure (IOP) levels in patients suffering from Wilsons disease. METHODS In observational, cross-sectional, non-interventional study, IOP was measured by applanation tonometry in 52 patients with Wilson's disease (WD), and compared to 52 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS Patients with Wilsons disease had significantly lower IOPs, compared to control group (CG) (13.20 ± 2.5 versus 14.98 ± 2.0, p < .000, t test). CONCLUSIONS We found that IOP is significantly lower in patients with WD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To measure copper (Cu), lysyl oxidase (LOX) activity, and collagen levels in aqueous humour (AH) of primary glaucoma patients and correlate with clinical parameters. METHODS 120 patients with 40 each of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), and cataract controls were recruited in this case-control study. AH samples were collected during the trabeculectomy and cataract surgeries. Cu levels were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. LOX unit activity was determined by Amplex Red assay and collagen concentration by Sirius red assay. RESULTS Significantly higher levels of Cu expressed as median (IQR) µmol/L were observed in POAG (p = 0.008) and PACG (p = 0.005) compared to controls. The LOX activity was increased in POAG and PACG (p = 0.04) compared to controls represented as median (IQR) µmol/min. The collagen levels given as median (IQR) mg/ml showed an insignificant increase in POAG and PACG compared to controls (p = 0.78). The LOX unit activity was correlated with visual field index (VFI), which showed a significant increase with the progression of the diseases (p < 0.05), whereas Cu levels were negatively correlated with LOX activity in AH. Cu and LOX activity showed weak correlation with YAG peripheral iridotomy (YAGPI), duration of anti-glaucoma medications, and highest preoperative intraocular pressure. CONCLUSION Elevated Cu and LOX activity was observed in both POAG and PACG groups compared to controls. LOX activity showed notable increase with VFI as the severity of the disease. Although Cu levels are increased in glaucoma, it's insufficient to significantly increase the activity of LOX.

Abstract
PURPOSE The therapeutic success of minimal invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) is challenging due to many factors including fibrotic or occlusive events. Recent clinical data show sudden peaks of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the postoperative care of glaucoma patients after suprachoroidal draining stents. Yet, the reasons for the IOP peaks are speculative. As a link between trace elements and fibrosis had been previously observed in systemic disorders, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of trace elements on the therapeutic success of the suprachoroidal draining stents in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). MATERIAL AND METHODS An analysis of a prospective single-center study was done: fifty-five eyes of patients with OAG (29 female, 26 male) underwent Cypass Micro-Stent implantation either as a stand-alone procedure or combined with cataract surgery. All patients underwent pre-operatively an ophthalmological examination which included slit lamp biomicroscopy and fundoscopy. IOP was measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry. Functional and morphometric data were assessed by Octopus G1-perimetry, which included measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (Spectralis OCT). Data of the patients' follow-ups were recorded during 18 months post-operatively. The therapeutic success of CyPass Micro-Stent was classified as 'success' (IOP reduction ≥20% compared to a pre-operative baseline without any medication), 'qualified success' (IOP reduction ≥20 % with same or lower additional eye medication), and 'failure' (IOP reduction ≤20 % or additional surgical treatment necessary). Aqueous humour was extracted once during surgery for analysis of the level of 14 trace elements: Copper (Cu), Cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), Iron (Fe), Lithium (Li), Magnesium (Mg), Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), Lead (Pb), Titanium (Ti), Uranium (U), Vanadium (V), and Zinc (Zn). Analysis of the trace elements was done using an ELEMENT 2, ICP-sf-MS instrument (Thermo-Fisher Scientific, Bremen, Germany). Analysis of levels of trace elements was done across the patients' groups of the three subclasses of therapeutic success. Statistical investigations for substantial differences were conducted using the method of least squares to fit general linear models and mixed models. The last one for the repeated measurements of IOP. RESULTS Levels of Mg were significantly lower one month postoperatively in the success group (LS-Mean 1.30 mg/L) compared to the qualified success group (LS-Mean 1.22 mg/L; p-value = 0.04). Fe was significantly increased in the failure group (LS-Mean 2.07 µg/L) compared to the qualified success group (LS-Mean 1.64 µg/L; p-value = 0.019) after 3 months of follow-up. Additionally, Fe levels were significantly lower in the success group (LS-Mean 1.47 µg/L) compared to the failure cohort (LS-Mean 2.07 µg/L; p-value = 0.009). After a period of 18 months, significantly higher levels of Mn were observed in the success group (LS-Mean 1.24 µg/L) than in the failure group (LS Mean 0.30 µg/L, p-value = 0.019). CONCLUSION The present data might suggest that trace elements can influence therapeutic success of suprachoroidal draining devices postoperatively and thus offer first hints for potential novel therapeutic options.

Abstract
Introduction Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness and visual impairment, about 16 million people around the world. Trace elements play an important role in a variety of the processes in human body. This study aimed to investigate the association between daily dietary intake of trace elements and age-related cataract incidence based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2008. Methods Iron, zinc, copper, and selenium were conducted in this study among subjects aged 50 years and older for African Americans and 55 and older in US adults. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used in different models to investigate the association of trace elements intake and cataract. Results After screening, 7,525 subjects were ultimately included in this study. A significant negative association was found between selenium intake and cataract incidence in adjusted models using multivariate logistic regression analysis (model 1: OR = 0.998, 95% CI = 0.997-1.000; model 2: OR = 0.997, 95% CI = 0.995-1.000; and model 3: OR = 0.998, 95% CI = 0.995-1.000). After dividing selenium intake into quintiles, significant negative associations between selenium intake and cataract were observed in the first quintile of model 3, the fourth and fifth quintiles of all models. In subgroup analyses adjusted for age and sex, a significant negative association was observed only in women aged 65-74 years. Discussion Our study points out that maintaining daily dietary selenium intake at higher levels is helpful for cataract prevention, and that increasing daily dietary selenium intake in American women aged 65-74 years may contribute to the prevention of age-related cataract. The intakes of iron, zinc, copper may not be associated with age-related cataract.

Genome-wide association and Mendelian randomization study of blood copper levels and 213 deep phenotypes in humans. Commun Biol 2022; 5:405. Abstract
Metal elements are present in the human body, and their levels in the blood have important impacts on health. In this study, 2488 Chinese individuals were included in a genome-wide association study of 21 serum metal levels, with approximately 179,000 East Asian individuals in a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, and 628,000 Europeans in a two-sample MR analysis. We identified two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs35691438 and rs671 that were significantly associated with serum copper levels (SCLs). The bidirectional two-sample MR analysis in the East Asian population showed that gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels have a causal effect on SCLs. SCLs have causal effects on six outcomes, namely risks of esophageal varix, glaucoma, sleep apnea syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus, white blood cell count, and usage of drugs affecting bone structure and mineralization. The two-sample MR analyses in the European population showed causal effects of erythrocyte copper levels on risks of carpal tunnel syndrome and compression fracture. Our results provide original insights into the causal relationship between blood metal levels and multiple human phenotypes. A genome-wide association study in a Chinese population identifies SNPs associated with serum copper levels. Mendelian randomization analysis reveals causal effects on multiple human phenotypes in East Asian and European populations.

Abstract
Glaucoma, a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease, is the second most common cause of blindness. Since early diagnosis facilitates timely treatment, it is therefore essential to identify appropriate markers. In the future, so-called biomarkers could be helpful in early detection and follow-up. In glaucoma, these parameters could be obtained in the aqueous humour. Altered antibodies, proteins, microRNA (miRNA) and trace element levels have already been identified. This review provides insight into possible changes in the aqueous humour of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG) or pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG). Studies on antibody changes in POAG patients identified an upregulation of immune system associated antibodies such as heat shock protein (HSP) 27. HSP27 was also upregulated in PEXG patients but decreased in NTG. In POAG and PEXG samples, the levels of certain proteins, including interleukins and endothelin-1, were elevated. The vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 may play a role in regulating intraocular pressure. By contrast, proteins playing a role in the response to oxidative stress were downregulated. In NTG patients, proteins responsible for the elimination of toxic by-products from the respiratory chain were downregulated. In addition, the aqueous humour of POAG and PEXG patients contained several miRNAs that have been linked to tissue development, neurological disease and cellular organisation. Other miRNAs regulated in glaucoma play a role in extracellular matrix remodelling and thus may affect drainage resistance in the trabecular meshwork. It is also interesting to note that the aqueous humour of glaucoma patients showed changes in the levels of trace elements such as zinc and selenium. The elevated zinc levels could be responsible for the imbalance of intraocular matrix metalloproteinases and thus for increased intraocular pressure. All these studies demonstrate the complex changes in aqueous humour in glaucoma. Some of these biomarkers may be useful in the future for early diagnosis of the disease.

Abstract
Glaucoma is a chronic optic neuropathy that creates a significant burden on public health. Oxidative stress is hypothesised to play a role to glaucoma progression, and its reduction is being analysed as a therapeutic target. Dietary antioxidants play a crucial role in helping provide insight into this hypothesis. We reviewed 71 trials, interventional, I -vivo and I -vitro, including 11 randomised controlled trials, to determine if adjunctive nutritional supplementation could lead to a reduction in oxidative stress and prevent glaucomatous progression. Many laboratory findings show that vitamins and natural compounds contain an abundance of intrinsic antioxidative, neuroprotective and vasoprotective properties that show promise in the treatment and prevention of glaucoma. Although there is encouraging early evidence, most clincial findings are inconclusive. The group of B vitamins appear to have the greatest amount of evidence. Other compounds such as flavonoids, carotenoids, curcumin, saffron, CoQ10, Ggngko Biloba and Resveratrol however warrant further investigation in glaucoma patients. Studies of these antioxidants and other nutrients could create adjunctive or alternative preventative and treatment modalities for glaucoma to those currently available.

Abstract
Trace element metabolism plays an important role in the formation of diabetes and complications of diabetes. Although trace elements changes in lenses in diabetic cataract and glaucoma formation have been investigated, there were few studies evaluating trace elements levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluid in diabetic and non-diabetic conditions. Therefore, we aimed to investigate zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr) levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluids of rabbits in the diabetic rabbit model. New Zealand male rabbits were divided into two groups as control (n = 8), and diabetes (n = 8) induced by alloxane. At the end of the experimental period, the osmolality in blood, plasma, and aqueous humor fluids from rabbits were measured by osmometer and Zn, Cu, and Cr levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluid were measured by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The osmolality in blood, plasma, and aqueous humor fluid of the diabetic group was significantly increased compared to the control group (respectively p < 0.01, p < 0.001, p < 0.001). It was analyzed that plasma Zn and Cu levels of diabetic rabbits increased significantly (respectively, p < 0.01; p < 0.001), whereas Cr level significantly decreased according to the control group (p < 0.01). It was observed that Cr and Zn levels in aqueous humor fluid in diabetes group decreased (respectively p < 0.001 and p < 0.01), and a significantly increased in Cu level (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Related with these changes that may occur in the eye due to the measured parameters, we consider that comparative studies of these types of diabetic animal models would be useful in the evaluation of diabetes and its complications.

Abstract
Glaucoma is a heterogeneous group of chronic neurodegenerative disorders characterized by a relatively selective, progressive damage to the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, which leads to axon loss and visual field alterations. To date, many studies have shown the role of various elements, mainly metals, in maintaining the balance of prooxidative and antioxidative processes, regulation of fluid and ion flow through cell membranes of the ocular tissues. Based on the earlier and current research results, their relationship with the development and progression of glaucoma seems obvious and is increasingly appreciated. In this review, we aimed to summarize the current evidence on the role of trace elements in the pathogenesis and prevention of glaucomatous diseases. Special attention is also paid to the genetic background associated with glaucoma-related abnormalities of physiological processes that regulate or involve the ions of elements considered as trace elements necessary for the functioning of the cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trace elements are assumed to be involved in glaucoma pathogenesis via changes in oxidative stress. Especially serum selenium (Se) has been linked to this neurodegenerative disease. Serum Se levels differ between countries due to nutrition and ethnicity. It was the aim of the present study to investigate serum Se levels in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients and controls in Germany and to consider potential age and gender effects. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Se concentration of 39 serum samples (22 patients with POAG, 17 controls) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-sf-MS) in high resolution mode. Covariance and percentile regression were analyzed. Age and gender were defined as confounding factors and their different trends were investigated. Moreover, age was examined across different quantiles of Se levels. RESULTS Total serum least-squares means (LS-means) Se levels were 132.02 µg/L (controls) and 134.86 µg/L (POAG). Total serum Se levels did not differ between the study groups (p > 0.05). Significant age and gender effects of serum Se were observed. Quantile analysis showed that the 1st serum Se quantile decreased with increasing age in POAG patients in contrast to controls. The odds ratios of the 1st serum Se were 1.3 (with 2nd quantile) and 1.3 (with 3rd quantile), respectively. CONCLUSION The serum Se level of the German cohort was almost half of those of the published US cohort (glaucoma 209.11 ng/mL; control 194.45 ng/mL). Age and gender effects were observed; the serum Se level increased with age in women (controls and POAG), however, Se levels decreased with age in men (controls and POAG).

Abstract
At present, physical methods of chemical analysis are constantly improving providing large amount of data on elemental composition of organs and tissues. However, only few works describe the correlation (or the potential connection) between the general or local bioelemental imbalances and specific biochemical reactions that are involved in pathogenesis of certain diseases. This review describes primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) - one of the most common ophthalmic diseases - in terms of elemental chemistry. The authors look into the impact that various subgroups of elements have on passive and active processes of homeostasis regulation and hydrodynamic balance in the eye. Alkaline metals and their analogues (K, Na, Li, Rb, Cs) influence hydrostatics and hydrodynamics by means of both K-Na pumps and osmosis. Alkaline-earth elements and their analogues (Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Be) are involved in biomineralization and intercellular interaction in the drainage areas. Chalcophile metals and their analogues (Zn, Cu, Hg, Co, Ni, Cd, Pb, Mo, Sb) regulate redox reactions. They are the cofactors of enzymes that support structural homeostasis of the drainage area. Siderophile metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Rh) regulate oxidation-reduction reactions, including those associated with limited nutrition of tissues in glaucoma. The role of amphoteric metals and nonmetals (Al, Si, Ga, V, TI, Sn, Ge, Zr, W) in POAG has not been described properly, but they were noted to participate in mineralization. Structure-forming non-metals and their analogues (N, S, Se, As) are directly involved in the formation of protein and non-protein aggregates that prevent aqueous humor outflow. The specific role of phosphorus in the pathogenesis of glaucoma has not been described previously. The authors analyze the involvement of phosphorus in energy-dependent processes of cellular activity, which are aimed at the reprocessing of aggregates that cause aqueous humor retention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form of chronic, progressive optic neuropathies characterized by slow degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells and their axons, resulting in visual field loss. Risk factors for this disease are elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), increased age, European and African ethnicity, family history, myopia and decreased corneal thickness. In addition, studies indicated that levels of trace elements are also significantly related to the POAG. METHOD The association between toxic and essential elements and POAG was explored in a population-based case-control study in the Sardinia Island (Italy). The aqueous humor levels of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in 25 POAG patients compared to 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls by sector field inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Risk factors as gender, age and increased IOP were also explored. RESULTS The concentrations of Fe, Hg and Zn were significantly higher in POAG patients than in control subjects, showing these elements as possible determinants in POAG development or degeneration. Other findings were the increased Cu and Fe levels in glaucomatous patients with age less than 70 years. Levels of Ni were found elevated in POAG females. Mercury accumulated more in POAG females, in patients over 70 years and in those with higher levels of IOP in the left eye. Moreover, the positive associations CuFe and Mn-Zn may indicate synergistic effects of elements. CONCLUSIONS Altogether, these findings suggested a multifactorial role in the risk for POAG disease. The present study documented the levels of trace elements in aqueous humor of Sardinian POAG patients for the first time.

Abstract
Trace elements play an important role in the pathogenesis of several serious ophthalmological disorders, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, cataract, etc. This study aimed to measure alterations of chemical elements' (67) levels in the aqueous humor of patients undergoing cataract surgery. The pilot study included 115 patients, (age 74 ± 7.27, female 64.35%, male 35.65%). The aqueous levels of elements were measured by the use of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), quality controlled with certified standards. The classification of elements based on their concentration was achieved by hierarchical cluster analysis. This is the first screening study that quantifies over 60 elements which are present in the fluid from the anterior chamber of the eye of cataract patients. The obtained results can be suitable for understanding and identifying the causes that may play a role in the initiation and progression of lens opacity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Glaucoma disease is known as multifactorial. Trace elements seemed to be linked via oxidative stress mediated changes to the complex glaucoma pathophysiology. Thus, it was the aim of this study to investigate serum levels of trace elements in primary open-angle glaucoma patients (POAG). PATIENTS AND METHODS Peripheral venous blood samples were taken from a total of 40 subjects: 22 primary open-angle glaucoma patients (mean age 58.1 ± 13.9, female 8, male 14) and 18 controls (mean age 38.9 ± 11.6, 6 female 6, male 12). Serum samples of cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese and zinc were analyzed by Inductively-Coupled-Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (Cu, Fe, Zn) and Inductively-Coupled-Plasma-sectorfield-Mass-Spectrometry (Cd, Co, Mn, Pb, Se). Data were analyzed using ANCOVA and presented as log transformed LS-mean. RESULTS Patients with POAG had significantly increased serum levels of iron (2.98 ± 0.03 μg/L vs 2.98 ± 0.03 μg/L) when compared to controls, and of cadmium (1.57 ± 0.05 ng/L vs. 1.40 ± 0.06 ng/L) considering the interaction between age and the class variable (control versus POAG). A gender effect was seen for cadmium, cobalt, copper, and iron in controls and POAG patients. Iron concentration was reduced in dependency of age for both genders in normals, however lesser in POAG patients. No difference was seen in serum levels of lead, manganese, and zinc between patients with POAG and controls. CONCLUSION A significant elevation of serum cadmium and iron levels in POAG patients as well as an additional gender effect of cadmium, cobalt, copper, and iron in normals and POAG patients, may argue for a potential role of these trace elements in the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress may play an important role in the etiology of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The association between risk of POAG and lead exposure, which is an environmental source of oxidative stress, has not been fully investigated yet. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to determine the association between bone lead—a biomarker of cumulative lead dose (tibia lead) or an endogenous source of stored lead (patella lead)—and incident POAG. METHODS We examined a prospective cohort of 634 POAG-free men [mean baseline age=66.8 y of age (SD=6.7)] from the Normative Aging Study (NAS) who had tibia and patella K X-ray fluorescence lead measurements between 1 January 1991 and 31 December 1999. They also had standard ocular evaluations by NAS optometrists until 31 December 2014. POAG cases were identified by consistent reports of enlarged or asymmetric cup-to-disc ratio together with visual field defect or existence of disc hemorrhage. We used Cox proportional hazards regressions to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) of incident POAG and adjusted survival curves to examine changes in the risk of POAG during follow-up according to bone lead quartiles. RESULTS We identified 44 incident cases of POAG by the end of follow-up (incidence rate=74 per 10,000 person-years; median follow-up=10.6 y). In fully adjusted models, 10-fold increases in patella lead and tibia lead were associated with HRs of 5.06 (95% CI: 1.61, 15.88, p=0.005) and 3.07 (95% CI: 0.94, 10.0, p=0.06), respectively. The HRs comparing participants in the third and fourth quartiles with the lowest quartile were 3.41 (95% CI: 1.34, 8.66) and 3.24 (95% CI: 1.22, 8.62) for patella lead (p-for-trend=0.01), and 3.84 (95% CI: 1.54, 9.55) and 2.61 (95% CI: 0.95, 7.21) for tibia lead (p-for-trend=0.02). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides longitudinal evidence that bone lead may be an important risk factor for POAG in the U.S. population. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP3442.

Abstract
PURPOSE Trace elements might play a role in the complex multifactorial pathogenesis of open-angle glaucoma. The aim of this study was to analyze concentrations of trace elements in aqueous humor samples of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG). PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty-three aqueous humor samples were obtained from patients undergoing cataract surgery: 12 patients with POAG (age 65.3±10.50, female 8, male 4), 10 patients with PEXG (age 65.9±11.27, female 6, male 4) and 11 patients without glaucoma (age 69.5±13.70, female 7, male 4) serving as controls. Aqueous humor levels of cadmium, iron, manganese, cobalt, copper and zinc were measured by Flow-Injection-Inductively-Coupled-Plasma-Mass-Spectrometry (FI-ICP-MS). RESULTS From the statistical evaluation, we observed that patients with POAG had significantly higher aqueous humor levels of zinc (p=0.006) compared to controls. Increased aqueous humor levels of zinc were also observed in patients with PEXG in relation to control (p=0.0006). For iron we observed a significantly reduction in PEXG compared to control (p=0.002) and a significant difference between POAG and PEXG (p=0.0091). No significant differences were observed in aqueous humor levels of manganese, cobalt, copper, cadmium between glaucoma and control patients. No differences were seen for iron (POAG vs. controls). Analysis of trace element ratios was added. CONCLUSION Significant differences in aqueous humor levels of zinc and iron between glaucoma and control patients support the hypothesis that these trace elements are involved in the pathogenesis of open-angle glaucoma.

Abnormal metal levels in the primary visual pathway of the DBA/2J mouse model of glaucoma. Biometals 2014; 27:1291-301. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine metal ion levels in central visual system structures of the DBA/2J mouse model of glaucoma. We used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure levels of iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), and calcium (Ca) in the retina and retinal projection of 5-month (pre-glaucomatous) and 10-month (glaucomatous) old DBA/2J mice and age-matched C57BL/6J controls. We used microbeam X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) spectrometry to determine the spatial distribution of Fe, Zn, and Cu in the superior colliculus (SC), which is the major retinal target in rodents and one of the earliest sites of pathology in the DBA/2J mouse. Our ICP-MS experiments showed that glaucomatous DBA/2J had lower retinal Fe concentrations than pre-glaucomatous DBA/2J and age-matched C57BL/6J mice. Pre-glaucomatous DBA/2J retina had greater Mg, Ca, and Zn concentrations than glaucomatous DBA/2J and greater Mg and Ca than age-matched controls. Retinal Mn levels were significantly deficient in glaucomatous DBA/2J mice compared to aged-matched C57BL/6J and pre-glaucomatous DBA/2J mice. Regardless of age, the SC of C57BL/6J mice contained greater Fe, Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations than the SC of DBA/2J mice. Greater Fe concentrations were measured by μ-XRF in both the superficial and deep SC of C57BL/6J mice than in DBA/2J mice. For the first time, we show direct measurement of metal concentrations in central visual system structures affected in glaucoma and present evidence for strain-related differences in metal content that may be specific to glaucomatous pathology.

Abstract
Natural eye lens is a crystalline substance to produce a clear passage for light. Cataract is opacity within the clear lens of the eye and is the dominant cause of socio-medical problem i.e., blindness worldwide. The only available treatment of cataract is surgery. However, insufficient surgical facilities in poor and developing countries and post-operative complications inspire researchers to find out other modes of treatment for cataract. In this review, an attempt has been made to appraise various etiological factors of cataract to make their perception clear to build up counterpart treatment. Present study is an assortment of various available literatures and electronic information in view of cataract etiopathogenesis. Various risk factors have been identified in development of cataracts. They can be classified in to genetic factors, ageing (systemic diseases, nutritional and trace metals deficiencies, smoking, oxidative stress etc.), traumatic, complicated (inflammatory and degenerative diseases of eye), metabolic (diabetes, galactosemia etc.), toxic substances including drugs abuses, alcohol etc., radiation (ultraviolet, electromagnetic waves etc.) are implicated as significant risk factors in the development of cataract.

Abstract
Background Use of illicit drugs induces multiple nutrient deficiencies. Drug habit, sexual practice and socioeconomic factors influence the nutrient profile of drug dependent subjects. The literature on this issue is still insufficient. This study has tested the hypothesis that illicit drug use and lifestyle impair mineral status. To test this hypothesis, 253 men multiple drug users of age 18–45 years were recruited to investigate their serum copper, zinc and iron levels. Influence of illicit drugs and their lifestyle on the mineral levels was also examined. The study subjects were drug dependent who had shared needles and had sexual activity with multiple partners. Serum concentrations of the minerals were estimated by atomic absorption flame spectrometry. Results Results showed a significant increase in serum copper and zinc concentrations, and decrease in iron level in drug dependent subjects. The increase of copper level was found to be much higher than that of zinc. Period of drug abuse had made a significant positive influence on the copper and iron levels, but it was apparently reversed for zinc concentration. Multiple sexual partnerships had significant influence on zinc status. There also were significant relationships observed between body mass index (BMI) as well as certain socioeconomic factors, and mineral status of drug dependent subjects and non-drug dependent controls. A series of multiple linear regression analysis predicted mineral values for education, age and BMI. The group (drug dependent subject = 1, non-drug dependent control = 2) had a significant influence on these parameters. However, after controlling these factors, it was shown that illicit drug use significantly contributed to influence the serum mineral levels. Conclusion Illicit drug use impairs serum mineral value causing an increase in copper and zinc and a decrease in iron. Lifestyle and nutritional status of drug dependent subjects influence serum mineral concentrations.

Abstract
Age-related cataract is an ever-increasing health problem among the elderly population worldwide. In recent years, there has been speculation that the levels of micronutrients in ocular tissue may play a role in the pathogenesis of cataract, especially zinc, since it is found in high concentrations in the eye tissues, including the aqueous humor. 44 subjects diagnosed with cataract were chosen for study and matched with 21 healthy controls to determine the concentration of zinc in aqueous humor. The findings revealed that a significantly higher concentration of zinc was present in the aqueous humor of our study population compared to controls (p < 0.001). These findings, in agreement with several previous studies, amplify the need for further investigation to determine if these higher levels are in actuality a consequence of the disease or a factor in the formation of cataract.

Abstract
Zinc, a trace element that influences cell metabolism through a variety of mechanisms, appears to play an integral role in maintaining normal ocular function. This element is present in high concentrations in ocular tissue, particularly in retina and choroid. Zinc deficiency has been shown in a number of species to result in a variety of gross, ultrastructural and electrophysiologic ocular manifestations. The physiological functions for zinc have been studied predominantly in retina and retinal pigment epithelium where zinc is believed to interact with taurine and vitamin A. modify photoreceptor plasma membranes, regulate the light-rhodopsin reaction, modulate synaptic transmission and serve as an antioxidant. Suboptimal zinc status in North America may influence the development and progression of several chronic eye diseases. Zinc supplementation trials and epidemiological studies have produced conflicting results concerning the role of zinc in age-related macular degeneration. Additional well-controlled supplementation trials are indicated to clarify the role of zinc in this disease. Future investigations must also expand our understanding of the mechanisms by which zinc regulates ocular morphology and function.
