Abstract
INTRODUCTION Household disinfectants and cleaning products (HDCPs), which involve a complex mixture of chemical ingredients, are commonly used in homes. HDCPs significantly contribute to chemical exposure in the indoor environment by releasing particles and volatile organic compounds while being used, potentially harming the respiratory health of those exposed. AREAS COVERED We provide an overview of scientific literature, especially from the last five years, regarding the (i) effects of using of HDCPs on adults' respiratory health; (ii) associations between prenatal or childhood exposure to HDCPs and children respiratory health. Finally, we discuss on standard and innovative methods of HDCP exposure assessment. EXPERT OPINION Recent literature provides further evidence on the harmful role of HDCPs on respiratory health in both adults and children. Exposure to HDCPs is a modifiable asthma risk factor that requires more consideration, in order to reduce asthma-related morbidity, and to improve and maintain an optimal control of the disease. Further research is essential to deepen the current knowledge, particularly by using innovative methods of exposure assessment to HDCPs, which could enhance the exposure characterization in both adults and children, and contribute to identify HDCP's chemical compounds leading to a risk for respiratory health.

Abstract
The EAACI Guidelines used the GRADE approach to evaluate the impact of major indoor air pollutants (dampness and mould, cleaning agents, volatile organic compounds and pesticides) on the risk of new-onset asthma and on asthma-related outcomes. The guideline also acknowledges the synergies among indoor air pollutants and other components of the indoor exposome (allergens, viruses, endotoxins). Very low to low certainty of evidence was found for the association between exposure to indoor pollutants and increased risk of new-onset asthma and asthma worsening. Only for mould exposure there was moderate certainty of evidence for new-onset asthma. Due to the quality of evidence, conditional recommendations were formulated on the risk of exposure to all indoor pollutants. Recommendations are provided for prevention, patient care and mitigation in a framework supporting rational decisions for healthcare professionals and patients to individualize and improve asthma management. For policymakers and regulators this evidence-informed guideline supports setting legally binding standards and goals for indoor air quality at international, national and local levels. Asthma management counselled by the current EAACI guidelines can improve asthma-related outcomes but community and governmental measures for improved indoor air quality are needed to achieve significant impact.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies evaluated the use of Household Disinfectant and Cleaning Products (HDCPs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, but no population-based cohorts used longitudinal data. We studied changes in HDCPs during the first lockdown, based on longitudinal data from the French population-based NutriNet-Santé and CONSTANCES cohorts. METHODS Based on standardized questionnaires on household cleaning tasks in 2018-2019 and around the first lockdown in France (March17-May3 2020), we compared the duration of weekly use of HDCPs (< 1 day/week, < 10 min/week; 10-30 min/week; > 30 min/week) and the household cleaning help (yes/no) before and during the lockdown period by Bhapkar and McNemar's tests. Moreover, we assessed self-reported changes in the frequency of HDCPs during the lockdown from before (unchanged/increased). RESULTS Analyses were carried on 31,105 participants of NutriNet-Santé (48 years, 75% women, 81% ≥ high school diploma) and 49,491 of CONSTANCES (47 years, 51% women, 87% ≥ high school diploma). During the lockdown, compared with 2018-2019, duration of HDCPs use increased (> 30 min; NutriNet-Santé: 44% versus 18%; CONSTANCES: 63% versus 16%) and household help decreased (NutriNet-Santé: 5% versus 40%; CONSTANCES: 3% versus 56%). Regarding the frequency of HDCPs use, 55% of participants of NutriNet-Santé (57% women/49% men) and 83% of CONSTANCES (86% women/81% men) reported an increased use since the beginning of the lockdown, significantly higher among women (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS The frequency and duration of weekly use of HDCPs has significantly increased since the pandemic. As the use of HDCPs is associated with health issues, further studies are now needed to evaluate the potential health impacts of these changes.

Abstract
The use of cleaning and disinfecting products both at work and at home increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those products often include surfactants, acids/bases, carcinogens such as chloroform, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as cyclosiloxanes, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, which may cause harmful health effects among professional cleaners as well as among people exposed at home or in their workplaces. The aim of this study was to synthesize the effects of the commonly used chemical, surface cleaning and disinfecting products on indoor air quality, focusing on chemical and particulate matter pollutants, exposure, and human health in residential and public buildings. We also provide a summary of recommendations to avoid harmful exposure and suggest future research directions. PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS) were used to search the literature. Analysis of the literature revealed that the use of cleaning products and disinfectants increase occupants' exposure to a variety of harmful chemical air contaminants and to particulate matter. Occupational exposure to cleaning and disinfectant products has been linked to an increased risk of asthma and rhinitis. Residential exposure to cleaning products has been shown to have an adverse effect on respiratory health, particularly on asthma onset, and on the occurrence of asthma(-like) symptoms among children and adults. Efforts to reduce occupants' exposure to cleaning chemicals will require lowering the content of hazardous substances in cleaning products and improving ventilation during and after cleaning. Experimentally examined, best cleaning practices as well as careful selection of cleaning products can minimize the burden of harmful air pollutant exposure indoors. In addition, indirect ways to reduce exposure include increasing people's awareness of the harmfulness of cleaning chemicals and of safe cleaning practices, as well as clear labelling of cleaning and disinfecting products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of household disinfectants and cleaning products (HDCPs) may negatively impact asthma control, but studies remain scarce. Moreover, no study considered green products or wipes, increasingly used during home cleaning. OBJECTIVE To assess the associations between the use of HDCPs, including disinfecting wipes and green products, and asthma control based on data from the French Web-based NutriNet-Santé cohort. METHODS Using a standardized questionnaire (2018), we assessed asthma control (never asthma: reference; controlled: Asthma Control Test ≥ 20; uncontrolled: Asthma Control Test < 20) and the use of HDCPs, including 2 types of products (irritants and green products) and 2 application modes (sprays and disinfecting wipes). Cross-sectional associations of the frequency of weekly use of HDCPs at home with asthma control, adjusted for sex, age, smoking status, body mass index, and educational level were assessed by multinomial logistic regressions. RESULTS Analyses were performed on 37,043 adults (mean age 47 y; 75% women; 62% with a weekly use of at least 1 HDCP). Strong associations were observed between weekly use of HDCPs and uncontrolled asthma. In particular, an almost daily use (4-7 d/wk) of irritants (odds ratio [OR] 2.81; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.97-4.00) and green products (OR 2.40; 95% CI 1.70-3.39) as well as sprays (OR 2.69; 95% CI 1.97-3.68) and disinfecting wipes (OR 3.51; 95% CI 2.31-5.33) was associated with uncontrolled asthma. When not co-used with irritants and sprays, associations remained statistically significant for both disinfecting wipes and green products. CONCLUSIONS Weekly use of HDCPs, including green products or wipes, was associated with uncontrolled asthma and should be considered by health practitioners in order to improve asthma control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Household chemicals may act as irritants in the lungs; however, their association with recurrent wheeze and asthma in children remains controversial. We aimed to investigate if household cleaning product exposure in infancy is associated with recurrent wheezing and asthma development in children. METHODS We analyzed data from two cohorts: MARC-35 consisting of 815 children with history of severe bronchiolitis in infancy, and MARC-43 consisting of 525 healthy children in infancy. Frequency of use of cleaning product at the child's home during infancy was collected via telephone interview with parents. Outcomes were recurrent wheezing by age 3 years and asthma diagnosis at age 6 years. RESULTS In MARC-35, there was no association between cleaning product exposure in infancy and recurrent wheeze (adjusted HR = 1.01 [95% CI 0.66-1.54] for 4-7 days/week exposure frequency), nor asthma (adjusted OR = 0.91 [95% CI 0.51-1.63]). In MARC-43, there was also no association between cleaning product exposure in infancy and recurrent wheeze (adjusted HR = 0.69 [95% CI 0.29-1.67] for 4-7 days/week exposure frequency). CONCLUSION We found no association between household cleaning product exposure in infancy and later development of recurrent wheeze or asthma, even among children who are at high risk for asthma due to history of severe bronchiolitis.
