Ear mites in sheep

Clinical development and serological antibody responses in sheep and rabbits experimentally infested with Psoroptes ovis and Psoroptes cuniculi

Psoroptes ovis of sheep origin, and Psoroptes cuniculi of rabbit origin were used in experimental infestations. In experiment I, groups of four rabbits and four sheep were infested with 50-100 mites of each isolate on the skin of the back (skin infestation, SI) or in the external auditory canal (aural infestation, AI). In rabbits, SI and AI with P. cuniculi and AI with P. ovis induced in all animals typical ear lesions and pronounced antibody reactions to P. cuniculi antigens in ELISA. After SI of rabbits with P. ovis no clinical signs were detected, no mites could be reisolated and no specific antibodies were detected. In sheep, P. ovis SI induced mange whereas AI did not induce typical clinical signs and mites could not be reisolated. In both these animal groups, ELISA revealed pronounced and comparable specific antibody reactions. After SI and AI with P. cuniculi no clinical symptoms were observed and no mites could be reisolated. Nevertheless, low levels of specific antibody were detected. In experiment II, clinical progression and antibody reactions to P. ovis SI in naive sheep were compared with sheep previously exposed to P. ovis or P. cuniculi. In both pre-exposed groups of animals, clinical signs appeared within 2 days after challenge infestation and three days earlier than in primarily infested sheep. Subsequently, no obvious difference in the clinical progression was observed between the three groups of animals. The results of this study document antigenetic crossreactivity of the two morphologically and genetically distinguishable Psoroptes species but differences in their biological behaviour and virulence which both are of epidemiological and taxonomic relevance.

Chronic stress in sheep: assessment tools and their use in different management conditions

Chronic stress occurs when animals are unable to deal with a persistent stressor with species-typical responses, or when several stressors are present concurrently. Chronic stress is most frequently considered in intensive systems, but it may also be a welfare concern for extensively managed species, such as the sheep. Here we review behavioural and physiological responses of sheep to experimentally induced chronic stressors to determine relevant indicators of chronic stress. Neuroendocrine responses to chronic stress are difficult to interpret because initial responses are followed by an apparent normalisation. Thus, cortisol or catecholamines may be at or below pre-stress levels during chronic stress, but this varies with different stressors. Chronic stress can also affect reproductive function, impair body and wool growth and meat quality, reduce immune function, and is associated with greater parasite burdens in sheep. Chronic stress induces alterations in behaviour patterns, particularly activity and feeding, and circadian rhythms of behaviour. Stereotypic behaviours, however, are infrequent in sheep and may occur only in experimental conditions of social isolation. Behavioural and physiological data suggest that rough handling and sheepdogs may be sources of chronic stress for sheep. Social subordination and weaning also act as chronic stressors, leading to higher parasitism in these animals and a greater response to additional stressors. Lameness and parasitism are associated with physiological and behavioural responses indicating that these are severe forms of chronic stress in sheep. It is unclear whether environmental stressors, such as weather and food availability, induce chronic stress in sheep. Under-nutrition may, however, be a welfare concern through its impact on lamb survival. The existence of many sources of chronic stress in the management of sheep suggests that the welfare of this species requires more attention than it has currently received.

Epidemiology of subclinical ovine psoroptic otoacariasis in Great Britain

Seven sheep flocks with subclinical psoroptic otoacariasis were investigated. Psoroptes species mites were isolated from 3.1 per cent of the 2676 sheep examined and the prevalence in the flocks ranged between 1.3 and 23.9 per cent, with the highest infestations in pedigree flocks. Unilateral or bilateral infestations were found in sheep of all ages. Adult and shearling rams, with prevalences of 21.5 and 14.2 per cent, respectively, were the most affected and two lambs, two and eight days old, were the youngest to be infested. There was no evidence of vertical transmission. The infestation affected several breeds of sheep. No other known hosts for Psoroptes species present on the premises were shown to be infested. Non-parasitic for-age mites were also isolated from the ear canals of the sheep and may have contributed to the clinical signs which, in adult sheep, ranged from aural haematomas/fibrosis (cauliflower ears), and violent head shaking and ear rubbing leading to excoriation and wounding of the ear and base of the ear. The signs in lambs included plaques of scab (often bloody) on the external ear cleft, excoriation of the base of the ear, ear scratching with the hind feet and inflammation of the external aspects of the horizontal canal. In all cases the internal pinnae were clear of typical psoroptic scabs. Psoroptes mites were isolated from 28.6 per cent of the damaged ears and from 7.8 per cent of the undamaged ears. There was no evidence of classical sheep scab in any of the flocks. Plunge dipping in diazinon, propetamphos or flumethrin, or the use of synthetic pyrethroid pour-on preparations and an oral drench of ivermectin had little effect because ear mite infestations were detected in the flocks after these treatments. An injection of ivermectin at 200 micrograms/kg bodyweight effectively eradicated the infestations when it was administered to these infested flocks.
