Impact of Nutrients on the Hoof Health in Cattle

Lameness is currently one of the most important and economically demanding diseases in cattle. It is manifested in a change in locomotion that is associated with lesions, especially the pelvic limbs. The disease of the hoof is painful, affecting the welfare of dairy cows. Important factors that influence the health of the limbs include nutrition, animal hygiene, stable technology, and genetic and breeding predispositions. Nutrition is one of the basic preventive factors affecting the quality and growth of the hoof horn, and the associated prevalence of hoof disease. The strength and structure of the hoof horn are affected by the composition of the feed ration (amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and toxic substances contaminating the feed ration, or arising in the feed ration as metabolites of fungi).

Studies on the biotin flow at the duodenum of dairy cows fed diets with different concentrate levels and types of forages

Biotin is involved in many vital metabolic pathways and must be provided for an efficient fermentation in the rumen, as well as for the intermediary metabolism of the host animal. Factors influencing ruminal biotin metabolism and output are widely unknown at present. Therefore, dairy cows fitted with permanent cannulas in the dorsal rumen and in the proximal duodenum were fed differently composed diets, and the biotin flow at the proximal duodenum was measured. The diets (on DM basis) consisted of 8.9 kg grass hay (Diet 1), 8.9 kg corn silage plus 2.0 kg concentrate (Diet 2), or 7.3 and 7.4 kg grass silage plus 10.0kg concentrate (Diets 3 and 4). The concentrate in Diets 3 and 4 contained 87% wheat and corn grain, respectively. The cows were pre-fed the rations for 21 days. Thereafter duodenal digesta was sampled every two h for 5 days. Cr2O3 served as a flow marker and the microbial proportion of total nitrogen at the duodenum was estimated by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The duodenal flow of biotin was not related to biotin intake, but to the amount of fermented organic matter (FOM) and the amount of microbial protein (Biotin [mg/d] = 0.518 kg FOM - 0.300; r=0.85 and biotin [mg/d] = 0.012 x g microbial protein + 1.478; r = 0.84), irrespective of the composition of the diet fed. Mean daily biotin flow was 0.48 +/- 0.11 mg/kg FOM without any systematic effect of diet composition. The ruminal biotin balance, calculated as the difference between biotin flow at the duodenum and biotin intake, was positive (1.4 - 2.0 mg/d) in cows fed the mixed roughage/concentrate diets and negative (-0.71 mg/d) when the pure hay diet was fed.

Claw Hardness of Dairy Cows: Relationship to Water Content and Claw Lesions

Lameness of dairy cows is a major welfare and economic problem. Degree of hardness of claws may influence chances for injury or for claw lesions, and exposure of claws to moisture may make them soft. To assess the relationship among hardness of the claw horn, quantity and rate of absorption of water, and incidence of claw lesions, 4 experiments were carried out. In the first 3 experiments, we soaked pieces of the claw horn in water for 12 to 24 h. Soaked claws gained weight and became significantly softer, indicating that water was absorbed. One-third of the total water absorbed in 24 h occurred during the first hour. Base of the abaxial and dorsal walls of the claw was harder than the sole, but became softer more rapidly when soaked in water. In the 4th experiment, significant negative correlations were detected between claw hardness of cows and severity of claw lesions, suggesting that cows with softer claws have the most severe claw lesions. Claw horn tissue absorbs water rapidly and claw hardness decreases with moisture content, suggesting that brief exposures to moist surfaces result in claws that absorb water and consequently become softer. The relationship between hardness and claw lesions indicates that cows with softer claws are at greater risk for lameness.

Effects of Biotin Supplementation on Performance and Claw Lesions on a Commercial Dairy Farm

A controlled 14-mo field trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of biotin supplementation on hoof lesions, milk production, and reproductive performance in a commercial dairy herd. One hundred seventy cows were studied and supplemented with either 0 or 20 mg/d of biotin by computer feeder. All were housed in the same free-stall facility with the same environment, base diet, and management. The feet of 99 cows were trimmed three times at 6-mo intervals, and hoof health was evaluated. Milk production and fertility data were captured monthly by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. At the final hoof trimming, sole hemorrhages were significantly higher in control (50%) vs. biotin-supplemented animals (24%). The incidents of cows affected with double soles, hoof wall grooves, and heel horn erosion did not differ between control and biotin-supplemented animals. Biotin supplementation of trimmed cows resulted in 878 kg more milk than control cows when compared with previous lactation yield (n = 46 biotin supplemented, n = 48 control cows). At the end of the study, for both trimmed and untrimmed animals, biotin supplemented cows (n = 81) produced 481 kg more milk and 25 kg more fat than the controls (n = 81). There was no interaction between biotin supplementation and hoof trimming on milk production. There were variations in the response of fertility to biotin between age groups. First lactation heifers fed supplemental biotin had significantly fewer days from calving to conception and required fewer inseminations per pregnancy than controls of the same parity.

Physiological changes in the concentrations of biotin in the serum and milk and in the physical properties of the claw horn in Holstein cows

Physiological changes in the concentrations of biotin in the serum and milk and in the physical properties of the claw horn were examined in Holstein cows. A lower concentration of biotin in the serum and a higher concentration of biotin in milk were found during early and late lactation and during the dry period, and a significant (p<0.05) inverse correlation was found between serum and milk biotin concentrations. A high moisture content and a low level of hardness of the claw horn were found during mid-lactation. Our results indicate that change in the serum biotin concentration probably results from the loss of biotin in the milk of cows during each stage of lactation and also confirm that the moisture content and hardness of the claw horn undergo physiological changes.
