Synthesis of Cobalt-Tin and -Lead Tetrylidynes-Reactivity Study of the Triple Bond

Tetrylidynes [TbbSn≡Co(PMe3 )3 ] (1 a) and [TbbPb≡Co(PMe3 )3 ] (2) (Tbb=2,6-[CH(SiMe3 )2 ]2 -4-(t-Bu)C6 H2 ) are accessed for the first time via a substitution reaction between [Na(OEt2 )][Co(PMe3 )4 ] and [Li(thf)2 ][TbbEBr2 ] (E=Sn, Pb). Following an alternative procedure the stannylidyne [Ar*Sn≡Co(PMe3 )3 ] (1 b) was synthesized by hydrogen atom abstraction using AIBN from the paramagnetic hydride complex [Ar*SnH=Co(PMe3 )3 ] (4) (AIBN=azobis(isobutyronitrile)). The stannylidyne 1 a adds two equivalents of water to yield the dihydroxide [TbbSn(OH)2 CoH2 (PMe3 )3 ] (5). In reaction of the stannylidyne 1 a with CO2 a product of a redox reaction [TbbSn(CO3 )Co(CO)(PMe3 )3 ] (6) was isolated. Protonation of the tetrylidynes occurs at the cobalt atom to give the metalla-stanna vinyl cation [TbbSn=CoH(PMe3 )3 ][BArF 4 ] (7 a) [ArF =C6 H3 -3,5-(CF3 )2 ]. The analogous germanium and tin cations [Ar*E=CoH(PMe3 )3 ][BArF 4 ] (E=Ge 9, Sn 7 b) (Ar*=C6 H3 (2,6-Trip)2 , Trip=2,4,6-C6 H2 iPr3 ) were also obtained by oxidation of the paramagnetic complexes [Ar*EH=Co(PMe3 )3 ] (E=Ge 3, Sn 4), which were synthesized by substitution of a PMe3 ligand of [Co(PMe3 )4 ] by a hydridoylene (Ar*EH) unit.

Syntheses and characterization of organo-group 14 cobaloxime compounds

Reactions of cobaloxime Na[(t-BuPy)Co(DH)2] with Ph3ECl (E = Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) were investigated. Metal-metal bonded complexes (t-BuPy)Co(DH)2EPh3 were isolated for E = Sn and Pb. (t-BuPy)Co(DH)2SnPh3.(C2H5)2O, C39H52CoN5O5Sn, crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c (Z = 4) with unit cell dimensions a = 11.6443(6) A, b = 15.6085(8) A, c = 22.6354(12) A, beta = 96.634(1) degrees , and V = 4086.4(4) A3 at 295(2) K. The structure resembled those of six-coordinate alkyl cobaloxime complexes and had Co-NPy and Co-Sn distances of 2.056(2) and 2.5568(3) A, respectively. (t-BuPy)Co(DH)2PbPh3, C35H42CoN5O4Pb, crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n (Z = 4) with unit cell dimensions a = 15.0104(7) A, b = 15.7693(8) A, c = 16.6230(8) A, beta = 114.348(1) degrees , and V = 3584.8(3) A3 at 295(2) K. The complex was nearly isostructural with the Sn analogue and had Co-NPy and Co-Pb distances of 2.049(2) and 2.6191(4) A, respectively. Coupling of the ortho phenyl protons to the spin 1/2 isotopes of Sn and of Pb was a characteristic feature of the 1H NMR spectrum. Additional, longer range couplings were observed for the Pb complex and for both complexes in the 13C NMR. Metal-metal bonded complexes were not obtained for E = Si or Ge. The products isolated in the latter case were the hydride Ph3GeH and the cobalt(II) complex (t-BuPy)Co(DH)2,C17H27CoN5O4, which crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn (Z = 8). Unit cell dimensions were a = 17.9821(11) A, b = 9.7449(6) A, c = 22.7374(15) A, and V = 3984.4(4) A3 at 295(2) K. The five-coordinate complex had Co-NPy = 2.096(2) A and was dimeric in the lattice.

Intramolecular Chalcogen−Tin Interactions in (o-MeE-C6H4)CH2SnPh3-nCln (E = S, O; n = 0, 1, 2), Characterized by X-ray Diffraction and 119Sn Solution and Solid-State NMR

Organotin(IV) compounds of the type (o-MeE-C6H4)CH2SnPh3-nCln were synthesized, E = O, n = 0 (1), n = 1 (2), n = 2 (3) and E = S, n = 0 (4), n = 1 (5), n = 2 (6). The complexes exhibit significant trigonal bipyramidal pentacoordination at tin as a consequence of intramolecular Sn-O (1-3) and Sn-S (4-6) interactions upon substitution of the phenyl groups by chloro groups. The intramolecular Sn-O distances in 1, 2, and 3 are 83%, 75%, and 79% of the sum of the van der Waals radii. The equivalent Sn-S values for 4, 5, and 6 are 90%, 73%, and 71%, respectively. The geometry of compound 3 is complicated by intermolecular dimerization via bridging chlorines creating a distorted octahedral geometry at tin. The related dichloro sulfur compound 6 also exhibits an intermolecular association in the form of Sn-Cl-H hydrogen bonding leading to a polymeric structure in the solid state. CPMAS 119Sn NMR spectroscopy suggests that the intramolecular Sn-E interactions persist in solution and also facilitated the discovery of a new crystalline form of 4, 4', that contains a Sn-S distance which is 95% the sum of the van der Waals radii.

Formation and multinuclear magnetic resonance investigation of silylammonium tetracarbonylcobaltate contact ion pairs

Silylcobalt tetracarbonyls were reacted with various amines (B) in non-polar solvents to form silylammonium tetracarbonylcobaltate contact ion pairs formulated as [BSiR3+, −Co(CO)4]. The compounds were characterized by IR and multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy both in solution and in solid state. Their properties are analogous to the known ion pairs [BH+, −Co(CO)4] and to amine adducts of halosilanes as well.
