Abstract
Background: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery results in weight reduction and decreased energy intake and can ameliorate type 2 diabetes. These beneficial effects are usually attributed to changes in hunger and satiety and relatively rapid improvements in glycemic control, but these effects may depend on dietary adherence. The aim of this study is to investigate the relatively early effects of RYGB surgery on weight reduction (by focusing on eating patterns) and glycemic control in rats subjected to a healthy maintenance diet or an unhealthy Western-style diet. Methods: Rats were fed a high-fat diet with added sucrose (HF/S) or a low-fat (LF) diet. Body weight, high-resolution tracking of meal-related parameters, and glucose regulation after overnight fasting and during a mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT; 2 mL sweet/condensed milk) were measured before and after RYGB (RYGB+) or sham surgery (RYGB-). Results: HF/S feeding led to an increased body weight just before RYGB surgery, but it also caused enhanced weight loss following RYGB, which led to similar body weights in the HF/S and LF diet groups twenty-four days post-operatively. RYGB surgery and diet dependently and independently influenced meal-related parameter outcomes, where both RYGB+ and HF/S feeding resulted in shorter meal duration (p < 0.01), higher ingestion rates (p < 0.001), and increased satiety ratio (p < 0.05), especially in the HF/S diet group subjected to RYGB. While RYGB surgery generally improved baseline glycemic parameters including HOMA-IR (p < 0.01), it often interacted with diet to affect MMTT-induced hyperglycemia (p < 0.05), beta-cell sensitivity (p < 0.01), and the insulinogenic index (p < 0.01), with the LF rats overall maintaining better glycemic control than the HF/S-fed rats. Conclusions: This study shows the importance of controlling diet after RYGB surgery, as diet type significantly influences ingestive behavior, post-prandial glucose regulation, beta-cell sensitivity, and glucose tolerance after RYGB.

Abstract
Diets varying in macronutrient composition, energy density, and/or palatability may cause differences in outcome of bariatric surgery. In the present study, rats feeding a healthy low-fat (LF) diet or an obesogenic high-fat/sucrose diet (HF/S) were either subjected to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) or sham surgery, and weight loss trajectories and various energy balance parameters were assessed. Before RYGB, rats eating an HF/S (n = 14) diet increased body weight relative to rats eating an LF diet (n = 20; P < 0.01). After RYGB, absolute weight loss was larger in HF/S (n = 6) relative to LF feeding (n = 6) rats, and this was associated with reduced cumulative energy intake (EI; P < 0.05) and increased locomotor activity (LA; P < 0.05-0.001), finally leading to similar levels of reduced body fat content in HF/S and LF rats 3 wk after surgery. Regression analysis revealed that variation in RYGB-induced body weight loss was best explained by models including 1) postoperative cumulative EI and preoperative body weight (R2 = 0.87) and 2) postoperative cumulative EI and diet (R2 = 0.79), each without significant contribution of LA. Particularly rats on the LF diet became transiently more hypothermic and circadianally arrhythmic following RYGB (i.e., indicators of surgery-associated malaise) than HF/S feeding rats. Our data suggest that relative to feeding an LF diet, continued feeding an HF/S diet does not negatively impact recovery from RYGB surgery, yet it promotes RYGB-induced weight loss. The RYGB-induced weight loss is primarily explained by reduced cumulative EI and higher preoperative body weight, leading to comparably low levels of body fat content in HF/S and LF feeding rats.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Relative to feeding an LF diet, continued feeding an HF/S diet does not negatively impact recovery from RYGB surgery in rats. Relative to feeding an LF diet, continued feeding an HF/S diet promotes RYGB-induced weight loss. Abstract
This invited review is based on a presentation given at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in July 2022 and provides the summary of two recent studies on changes in ingestive behavior following bariatric surgery (BS). First, long-term changes in daily absolute and relative macronutrient intake are reported in a rodent model of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Rats undergoing RYGB progressively decreased their daily calorie- and daily fat intake compared to their preoperative baseline and to the intake of sham operated animals. Second, postbariatric changes in the within-meal ingestive microstructure are portrayed, based on longitudinal data collected in RYGB patients using a drinkometer. The post-RYGB meal size showed a dynamic adjustment process, with the highest decrease in the early postoperative phase, followed by a steady convalescence up to 1-year, at which point the meal size of RYGB patients became comparable to the normal weight adults'. Results are contextualized and contrasted to recent reports on the effect of BS on taste and food choices and consumption. The showcased evidence supports the role of ingestive adaptation and learning in the achievement of reduced calorie intake after RYGB, both in humans and in rodents. The reorganized upper-gastrointestinal anatomy supposedly leads to increased postingestive caloric sensibility, which might be an important behavioral mediator of decreased postbariatric meal size and consequent weight loss.

Abstract
The molecular clock machinery regulates several homeostatic rhythms, including glucose metabolism. We previously demonstrated that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has a weight-independent effect on glucose homeostasis and transiently reduces food intake. In this study we investigate the effects of RYGB on diurnal eating behavior as well as on the molecular clock and this clock's requirement for the metabolic effects of this bariatric procedure in obese mice. We find that RYGB reversed the high-fat diet-induced disruption in diurnal eating pattern during the early postsurgery phase of food reduction. Dark-cycle pair-feeding experiments improved glucose tolerance to the level of bypass-operated animals during the physiologic fasting phase (Zeitgeber time 2, ZT2) but not the feeding phase (ZT14). Using a clock gene reporter mouse model (mPer2Luc), we reveal that RYGB induced a liver-specific phase shift in peripheral clock oscillation with no changes to the central clock activity within the suprachiasmatic nucleus. In addition, we show that weight loss effects were attenuated in obese ClockΔ19 mutant mice after RYGB that also failed to improve glucose metabolism after surgery, specifically hepatic glucose production. We conclude that RYGB reprograms the peripheral clock within the liver early after surgery to alter diurnal eating behavior and regulate hepatic glucose flux.

Abstract
Obesity is a serious and global health problem. The multiple complications of obesity reduce quality of life and increase mortality. Bariatric surgery is one of the best treatment options for obesity management. Bariatric surgery helps people reduce their caloric intake by treating the disease of obesity effectively, in part by increasing signaling from the gut to the brain. The most frequent surgical options are Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG). There is controversy regarding changes in food preferences and selection after bariatric surgery. In this review, we aim to outline the changes in food intake and selection, clarify the behavior changes in food intake, and assess the potential mechanisms responsible for these changes in patients after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric or weight loss surgery is currently the most effective treatment for obesity and metabolic disease. Unlike dieting and pharmacology, its beneficial effects are sustained over decades in most patients, and mortality is among the lowest for major surgery. Because there are not nearly enough surgeons to implement bariatric surgery on a global scale, intensive research efforts have begun to identify its mechanisms of action on a molecular level in order to replace surgery with targeted behavioral or pharmacological treatments. To date, however, there is no consensus as to the critical mechanisms involved. SCOPE OF REVIEW The purpose of this non-systematic review is to evaluate the existing evidence for specific molecular and inter-organ signaling pathways that play major roles in bariatric surgery-induced weight loss and metabolic benefits, with a focus on Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), in both humans and rodents. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS Gut-brain communication and its brain targets of food intake control and energy balance regulation are complex and redundant. Although the relatively young science of bariatric surgery has generated a number of hypotheses, no clear and unique mechanism has yet emerged. It seems increasingly likely that the broad physiological and behavioral effects produced by bariatric surgery do not involve a single mechanism, but rather multiple signaling pathways. Besides a need to improve and better validate surgeries in animals, advanced techniques, including inducible, tissue-specific knockout models, and the use of humanized physiological traits will be necessary. State-of-the-art genetically-guided neural identification techniques should be used to more selectively manipulate function-specific pathways.

Abstract
A plethora of studies to date has examined the roles of feeding-related peptides in the control of food intake. However, the influence of these peptides on the intake of particular macronutrient constituents of food - carbohydrate, fat, and protein - has not been as extensively addressed in the literature. Here, the roles of several feeding-related peptides in controlling macronutrient intake are reviewed. Next, the relationship between macronutrient intake and diseases including diabetes mellitus, obesity, and eating disorders are examined. Finally, some key considerations in macronutrient intake research are discussed. We hope that this review will shed light onto this underappreciated topic in ingestive behavior research and will help to guide further scientific investigation in this area.

Abstract
With the rising worldwide obesity rates, bariatric surgeries are increasing. Although the surgery offers an effective treatment option for weight loss, the procedure causes dramatic physiological and metabolic changes. Animal models in rodents provide a valuable tool for studying the systemic effects of the surgery. Since the surgery may significantly influence the pharmacokinetic properties of medications, animal studies should provide essential insight into mechanisms underlying changes in how the body handles the drug. This review summarizes research work in rodents regarding the impact of standard bariatric procedures on pharmacokinetics. A qualitative literature search was conducted via PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and EMBASE. Studies that examined bariatric surgery's effects on drug pharmacokinetics in rodent models were included. Clinical studies and studies not involving drug interventions were excluded. A total of 15 studies were identified and assessed in this review. These studies demonstrate the possible impact of bariatric surgery on drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and potential mechanisms. Pharmacokinetic changes exhibited in the limited pre-clinical studies highlight a need for further investigation to fully understand the impact and mechanism of bariatric surgery on drug responses.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery results in long-term weight loss and an improved metabolic phenotype due to changes in the gut-brain axis regulating appetite and glycaemia. Neuroendocrine alterations associated with bariatric surgery may also influence hedonic aspects of eating by inducing changes in taste preferences and central reward reactivity towards palatable food. However, the impact of bariatric surgery on disordered eating behaviours (e.g.: binge eating, loss-of-control eating, emotional eating and 'addictive eating'), which are commonly present in people with obesity are not well understood. Increasing evidence suggests gut-derived signals, such as appetitive hormones, bile acid profiles, microbiota concentrations and associated neuromodulatory metabolites, can influence pathways in the brain implicated in food intake, including brain areas involved in sensorimotor, reward-motivational, emotional-arousal and executive control components of food intake. As disordered eating prevalence is a key mediator of weight-loss success and patient well-being after bariatric surgery, understanding how changes in the gut-brain axis contribute to disordered eating incidence and severity after bariatric surgery is crucial to better improve treatment outcomes in people with obesity.

Abstract
Despite decades of obesity research and various public health initiatives, obesity remains a major public health concern. Our most drastic but most effective treatment of obesity is bariatric surgery with weight loss and improvements in co-morbidities, including resolution of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the mechanisms by which surgery elicits metabolic benefits are still not well understood. One proposed mechanism is through signals generated by the intestine (nutrients, neuronal, and/or endocrine) that communicate nutrient status to the brain. In this review, we discuss the contributions of gut-brain communication to the physiological regulation of body weight and its impact on the success of bariatric surgery. Advancing our understanding of the mechanisms that drive bariatric surgery-induced metabolic benefits will ultimately lead to the identification of novel, less invasive strategies to treat obesity.

Abstract
The measurement of the size and timing of meals provides critical insight into the processes underlying food intake. While most work has been conducted with a single food or fluid, the availability of food choices can also influence eating and interact with these processes. The 5-Item Food Choice Monitor (FCM), a device that continuously measures eating and drinking behaviors of rats provided up to 5 foods and 2 fluids simultaneously, was designed to allow study of food choices simultaneously with meal patterns. To validate this device, adult male and female (n = 8 each) Sprague-Dawley rats were housed in the FCM. Food and fluid intake were measured continuously (22-h/day) while rats were presented water and powdered chow. Then a cafeteria diet of 5 foods varying in macronutrient content, texture, and flavors were offered along with water. Lastly, the 5 foods were offered along with 0.3 M sucrose and water. Analyses were conducted to find optimal criteria for parceling ingestive behavior into meals, and then meal patterns were quantified. Total intake, as assessed by FCM software, was in good concordance with that measured by an independent scale. A minimum meal size of 1 kcal and a meal termination criterion of 15-min accounted for >90% of total intake and produced meal dynamics that were in register with the literature. Use of the cafeteria diet allowed comparisons between meal patterns with a single food versus a multi-food diet, as well as analyses of macronutrient-related food choices across subsets of meals. The FCM proved to accurately measure food intake over a 22-h period and was able to detect differences and similarities in the meal patterns of rats as a function of sex and food choice availability. Combined with any number of experimental manipulations, the FCM holds great promise in the investigation of the physiological and neural controls of ingestive behavior in a dietary environment that allows food choices, more closely emulating human eating conditions.

Abstract
Secreted proteins of the C1q/TNF-related protein (CTRP) family play diverse functions in different organ systems. In the brain, CTRP14/C1QL1 is required for the proper establishment and maintenance of synapses between climbing fibers and cerebellar Purkinje cells. Beyond the central nervous system, the function of CTRP14 is largely unknown. A recent genome-wide association study has implicated CTRP14/C1QL1 as a candidate gene associated with total body fat mass. Here, we explored the potential metabolic roles of CTRP14. We show that Ctrp14 expression in peripheral tissues is dynamically regulated by fasting-refeeding and high-fat feeding. In the chow-fed basal state, Ctrp14 deletion modestly reduces glucose tolerance in knockout (KO) male mice and affects physical activity in a sex- and nutritional state-dependent manner. In the ad libitum fed state, Ctrp14 KO male mice have lower physical activity. In contrast, female KO mice have increased physical activity in the fasted and refed states. In response to an obesogenic diet, CTRP14-deficient mice of either sex gained similar weight and are indistinguishable from wild-type littermates in body composition, lipid profiles, and insulin sensitivity. Ambulatory activity, however, is reduced in Ctrp14 KO male mice. Food intake is also reduced in Ctrp14 KO male mice in the refed period following food deprivation. Meal pattern analyses indicate that decreased caloric intake from fasting to refeeding is due, in part, to smaller meal size. We conclude that CTRP14 is largely dispensable for metabolic homeostasis, but highlight context-dependent and sexually dimorphic metabolic responses of Ctrp14 deletion affecting physical activity and ingestive behaviors.NEW & NOTEWORTHY CTRP14 is a secreted protein whose function in the peripheral tissues is largely unknown. We show that the expression of Ctrp14 in peripheral tissues is regulated by metabolic and nutritional state. We generated mice lacking CTRP14 and show that CTRP14 deficiency alters physical activity and food intake in response to fasting and refeeding. Our data has provided new and valuable information on the physiological function of CTRP14.

Abstract
C1q/TNF‐related proteins (CTRP1‐15) constitute a conserved group of secreted proteins of the C1q family with diverse functions. In vitro studies have shown that CTRP11/C1QL4 can inhibit adipogenesis, antagonize myoblast fusion, and promote testosterone synthesis and secretion. Whether CTRP11 is required for these processes in vivo remains unknown. Here, we show that knockout (KO) mice lacking CTRP11 have normal skeletal muscle mass and function, and testosterone level, suggesting that CTRP11 is dispensable for skeletal muscle development and testosterone production. We focused our analysis on whether this nutrient‐responsive secreted protein plays a role in controlling sugar and fat metabolism. At baseline when mice are fed a standard chow, CTRP11 deficiency affects metabolic parameters in a sexually dimorphic manner. Only Ctrp11‐KO female mice have significantly higher fasting serum ketones and reduced physical activity. In the refeeding phase following food withdrawal, Ctrp11‐KO female mice have reduced food intake and increased metabolic rate and energy expenditure, highlighting CTRP11’s role in fasting–refeeding response. When challenged with a high‐fat diet to induce obesity and metabolic dysfunction, CTRP11 deficiency modestly exacerbates obesity‐induced glucose intolerance, with more pronounced effects seen in Ctrp11‐KO male mice. Switching to a low‐fat diet after obesity induction results in greater fat loss in wild type relative to KO male mice, suggesting impaired response to obesity reversal and reduced metabolic flexibility in the absence of CTRP11. Collectively, our data provide genetic evidence for novel sex‐dependent metabolic regulation by CTRP11, but note the overall modest contribution of CTRP11 to systemic energy homeostasis.

Abstract
Background Bariatric surgery alters food preferences in rats and reportedly decreases desire to consume high-fat high-sugar food in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate whether early post-operative exposure to high-fat food could increase body weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) by triggering fat avoidance. Methods Male Wistar rats underwent either RYGB (n = 15) or sham-operations (n = 16). Preoperatively a standardized 4-choice cafeteria diet [dietary options: low-fat/low-sugar (LFLS), low-fat/high-sugar (LFHS), high-fat/low-sugar (HFLS), high-fat/high-sugar (HFHS)] was offered. First, each option was available for 4 days, thereafter rats were offered the 4 options simultaneously for 3 days preoperatively. Post-surgery, 8 rats in the RYGB- and 8 in the sham-group were exposed to a high-fat content diet (Oatmeal + 30% lard, OM+L) for 10 days, while 7 RYGB rats and 8 sham-rats received OM alone. From the 11th postoperative day, the 4-choice cafeteria diet was reintroduced for 55-days. The intake of all available food items, macronutrients and body weight changes were monitored over 8 weeks. Main outcomes were long-term body-weight and daily change in relative caloric intake during the postoperative cafeteria period compared to the preoperative cafeteria. Results During the first 12 days of postoperative cafeteria access, RYGB-rats exposed to OM+L had a higher mean caloric intake per day than RYGB rats exposed to OM alone (Δ10 kCal, Padj = 0.004), but this difference between the RYGB groups disappeared thereafter. Consequently, in the last 33 days of the postoperative cafeteria diet, the mean body weight of the RYGB+OM+L group was higher compared to RYGB+OM (Δ51 g, Padj < 0.001). RYGB rats, independently from the nutritional intervention, presented a progressive decrease in daily consumption of calories from fat and increased their daily energy intake mainly from non-sugar carbohydrates. No such differences were detected in sham-operated controls exposed to low- or high fat postoperative interventions. Conclusion A progressive decrease in daily fat intake over time was observed after RYGB, independently from the nutritional intervention. This finding confirms that macronutrient preferences undergo progressive changes over time after RYGB and supports the role of ingestive adaptation and learning. Early postoperative exposure to high-fat food failed to accentuate fat avoidance and did not lead to superior weight loss in the long-term.

Abstract
After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), rats consume less high-energy foods and fluids, though whether this reflects a concomitant change in palatability remains unclear. By measuring behavior during intraorally delivered liquid meals across days (1 water, 8 sucrose sessions), we showed that RYGB rats (RYGB, n = 8/sex) consumed less 1.0 M sucrose than their sham surgery counterparts (SHAM, n = 8 males, n = 11 females) but displayed similarly high levels of ingestive taste reactivity responses at the start of infusions. Relative to water, both groups increased intake of sucrose, and ingestive responses were dominated by tongue protrusions rather than mouth movements. Thus, RYGB animals still found sucrose palatable despite consuming less than the SHAM group. As the intraoral infusion progressed but before meal termination, aversive behavior remained low and both RYGB and SHAM animals showed fewer ingestive responses, predominantly mouth movements as opposed to tongue protrusions. This shift in responsiveness unrelated to surgical manipulation suggests negative alliesthesia, or a decreased palatability, as rats approach satiation. Notably, only in RYGB rats, across sessions, there was a striking emergence of aversive behavior immediately after the sucrose meal. Thus, although lower intake in RYGB rats seems independent of the hedonic taste properties of sucrose, taste reactivity behavior in these animals immediately after termination of a liquid meal appears to be influenced by postoral events and reflects a state of nimiety or excessive consumption. Measurement of taste reactivity behaviors during an intraorally delivered meal represents a promising way to make inferences about internal state in nonverbal preclinical models.

Due to the fact that the behavioral tests to date rely on the hedonic value of the stimulus to drive responsiveness, we sought to determine whether taste detection thresholds to sucrose and NaCl are affected by these manipulations as measured in an operant two-response signal detection paradigm. Female rats were maintained on HFD or chow for 10 weeks, at which point animals received either RYGB or SHAM surgery followed by a gel-based diet and then powdered chow. Upon recovery, half of the rats that were previously on HFD were switched permanently to chow, and the other rats were maintained on their presurgical diets (n = 5–9/diet condition x surgery group for behavioral testing). The rats were then trained and tested in a gustometer. There was a significant interaction between diet condition and surgery on NaCl threshold that was attributable to a lower value in RYGB vs. SHAM rats in the HFD condition, but this failed to survive a Bonferroni correction. Importantly, there were no effects of diet condition or surgery on sucrose thresholds. Additionally, although recent evidence suggests that maintenance on HFD alters taste bud number in the circumvallate papillae (CV) of mice, in a subset of rats, we did not find that diet significantly influenced taste pores in the anterior tongue or CV of female rats. These results suggest that any changes in sucrose responsiveness in intake/preference or hedonically oriented tests in rats as a function of HFD maintenance or RYGB are not attributable to alterations in taste sensitivity.

Abstract
In rodents, repeated single-bottle exposures to distinctly flavored isocaloric glucose and fructose solutions, two sugars with different metabolic pathways, eventually lead to a preference for the former. Because Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery decreases preference for and intake of sugar solutions in rats, we tested whether RYGB would curtail the conditioning of a preference for a glucose-paired vs. fructose-paired flavor. RYGB (♂ n=11; ♀ n=10) and sham-operated (SHAM; ♂ n=9; ♀ n=10) rats were trained with a single bottle (30 min/day) containing 8% glucose solution flavored with either 0.05% grape or cherry Kool-Aid (Glu/CSG) or 8% fructose solution with the alternative Kool-Aid flavor (Fru/CSF) in an alternating fashion for 8 days. To determine baseline preferences, a 4-day 30-min two-bottle test was used to assess preference for Glu/CSG vs. Fru/CSF before training. After training, 2-day 30-min two-bottle tests assessed preference for the a) Glu/CSG (CSG-flavored 8% glucose solution) vs Fru/CSF (CSF-flavored 8% fructose solution), b) CSG- vs. CSF-flavored mixture of 4% glucose & 4% fructose (isocaloric), c) CSG- vs. CSF-flavored 0.2% saccharin ("sweet", no calories), and d) CSG- vs. CSF-flavored water. During training, only male SHAM rats demonstrated progressively increased intake of Glu/CSG over Fru/CSF, and female SHAM rats displayed a trend. RYGB eliminated any difference in single-bottle intake of these solutions during training, regardless of sex. Like their male and female SHAM counterparts, male RYGB rats displayed a conditioned preference for the CSG-associated stimulus in Tests 1-3. Although female RYGB rats displayed acquisition of the conditioned flavor preference in Test 1, unlike the other groups, when the differential sugar cue between the two solutions was removed in Tests 2 and 3, female rats did not display a CSG preference. When the sugar and sweetener cues were both removed on Test 4, all groups displayed some generalization decrement. Thus, RYGB does not compromise the ability of rats to learn and express a glucose- vs. fructose-associated conditioned flavor preference when the exact CS used in training is presented in testing. The mechanistic basis for the sex difference in the effect of RYGB on the generalization decrement observed in this type of flavor preference learning warrants further study.

Abstract
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery has been proven successful in weight loss and improvement of co-morbidities associated with obesity. Chronic complications such as malabsorption of micronutrients in up to 50% of patients underline the need for additional therapeutic approaches. We investigated systemic RYGB surgery effects in a liquid sucrose diet-induced rat obesity model. After consuming a diet supplemented with high liquid sucrose for eight weeks, rats underwent RYGB or control sham surgery. RYGB, sham pair-fed, and sham ad libitum-fed groups further continued on the diet after recovery. Notable alterations were revealed in microbiota composition, inflammatory markers, feces, liver, and plasma metabolites, as well as in brain neuronal activity post-surgery. Higher fecal 4-aminobutyrate (GABA) correlated with higher Bacteroidota and Enterococcus abundances in RYGB animals, pointing towards the altered enteric nervous system (ENS) and gut signaling. Favorable C-reactive protein (CRP), serine, glycine, and 3-hydroxybutyrate plasma profiles in RYGB rats were suggestive of reverted obesity risk. The impact of liquid sucrose diet and caloric restriction mainly manifested in fatty acid changes in the liver. Our multi-modal approach reveals complex systemic changes after RYGB surgery and points towards potential therapeutic targets in the gut-brain system to mimic the surgery mode of action.

Abstract
Gastric bypass surgery leads to significant and sustained weight loss and a reduction in associated health risks in individuals with severe obesity. While reduced energy intake (EI) is the primary driver of weight loss following surgery, the underlying mechanisms accounting for this energy deficit are not well understood. The evidence base has been constrained by a lack of fit-for-purpose methodology in assessing food intake coupled with follow-up studies that are relatively short-term. This paper describes the underlying rationale and protocol for an observational, fully residential study using covert, objective methodology to evaluate changes in 24-hr food intake in patients (n = 31) at 1-month pre-surgery and 3-, 12- and 24-months post-surgery, compared to weight-stable controls (n = 32). The main study endpoints included change in EI, macronutrient intake, food preferences, and eating behaviours (speed, frequency, and duration of eating). Other physiological changes that may influence EI and weight regulation including changes in body composition, circulating appetite hormones, resting metabolic rate, total energy expenditure and gastrointestinal symptoms were also evaluated. Understanding which mechanisms contribute to a reduction in EI and weight loss post-surgery could potentially help to identify those individuals who are most likely to benefit from gastric bypass surgery as well as those that may need more targeted intervention to optimise their weight loss post-surgery. Furthermore, clarification of these mechanisms may also inform targeted approaches for non-surgical treatments of obesity.

Abstract
After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB), rats tend to reduce consumption of high-sugar and/or high-fat foods over time. Here, we sought to investigate the behavioral mechanisms underlying these intake outcomes. Adult female rats were provided a cafeteria diet comprised of five palatable foodstuffs varying in sugar and fat content and intake was monitored continuously. Rats were then assigned to either RYGB, or one of two control (CTL) groups: sham surgery or a nonsurgical control group receiving the same prophylactic iron treatments as RYGB rats. Post-sur-gically, all rats consumed a large first meal of the cafeteria diet. After the first meal, RYGB rats reduced intake primarily by decreasing the meal sizes relative to CTL rats, ate meals more slowly, and displayed altered nycthemeral timing of intake yielding more daytime meals and fewer nighttime meals. Collectively, these meal patterns indicate that despite being motivated to consume a cafeteria diet after RYGB, rats rapidly learn to modify eating behaviors to consume foods more slowly across the entire day. RYGB rats also altered food preferences, but more slowly than the changes in meal patterns, and ate proportionally more energy from complex carbohydrates and protein and proportionally less fat. Overall, the pattern of results suggests that after RYGB rats quickly learn to adjust their size, eating rate, and distribution of meals without altering meal number and to shift their macronutrient intake away from fat; these changes appear to be more related to postingestive events than to a fundamental decline in the palatability of food choices.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analyses aimed to synthesize evidence of the link between bariatric surgery and changes in food preferences, considering the method of assessment. MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Cinahl, PsychINFO, ProQuest, and Open grey were searched incorporating two blocks of terms ("Intervention" and "Food Preferences"). Interventional or observational studies involving patients (BMI ≥ 35 kg m-2 ) with sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and a control group were included. Meta-analyses were performed comparing the standardized daily mean percentage energy from proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids between preoperative and postoperative patients. Fifty-seven studies concerning 2,271 patients with RYGB and 903 patients with SG met the inclusion criteria, of which 24 were eligible for meta-analysis. Despite a total reduction in macronutrient intakes, the meta-analyses revealed a postoperative increase in percentage energy from proteins at 12 months (0.24, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.46, {I2 } = 73%) and a decrease in percentage energy from fat at 1 month (-0.47, 95% CI: 0.86, 0.09, {I2 } = 72%), up to 24 months (-0.20, 95% CI: -0.31, 0.08, {I2 } = 0%). In conclusion, the present systematic review and meta-analyses showed changes of food preferences in terms of macronutrient, food selection and, overall food appreciation up to 5 years following bariatric surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) decreases energy intake and is, therefore, an effective treatment of obesity. The behavioral bases of the decreased calorie intake remain to be elucidated. We applied the methodology of microstructural analysis of meal intake to establish the behavioral features of ingestion in an effort to discern the various controls of feeding as a function of RYGB. METHODS The ingestive microstructure of a standardized liquid meal in a cohort of 11 RYGB patients, in 10 patients with obesity, and in 10 healthy-weight adults was prospectively assessed from baseline to 1 year with a custom-designed drinkometer. Statistics were performed on log-transformed ratios of change from baseline so that each participant served as their own control, and proportional increases and decreases were numerically symmetrical. Data-driven (3 seconds) and additional burst pause criteria (1 and 5 seconds) were used. RESULTS At baseline, the mean meal size (909.2 versus 557.6 kCal), burst size (28.8 versus 17.6 mL), and meal duration (433 versus 381 seconds) differed between RYGB patients and healthy-weight controls, whereas suck volume (5.2 versus 4.6 mL) and number of bursts (19.7 versus 20.1) were comparable. At 1 year, the ingestive differences between the RYGB and healthy-weight groups disappeared due to significantly decreased burst size (P = 0.008) and meal duration (P = 0.034) after RYGB. The first-minute intake also decreased after RYGB (P = 0.022). CONCLUSION RYGB induced dynamic changes in ingestive behavior over the first postoperative year. While the eating pattern of controls remained stable, RYGB patients reduced their meal size by decreasing burst size and meal duration, suggesting that increased postingestive sensibility may mediate postbariatric ingestive behavior. Abstract
Gastric bypass surgery is an effective long-term treatment for individuals with severe obesity. Changes in appetite, dietary intake, and food preferences have all been postulated to contribute to postoperative body weight regulation, however, findings are inconsistent. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the current literature on changes in dietary intake and appetite following gastric bypass surgery, in the context of the methodology used and the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results. Four databases were systematically searched with terms related to "gastric bypass surgery," "appetite," and "dietary intake," and 49 papers (n = 2384 patients after gastric bypass) were eligible for inclusion. The evidence indicated that only a reduction in overall energy intake and an increase in postprandial satiety are maintained beyond 6-month post-surgery, whereas relative macronutrient intake and premeal hunger remain unchanged. However, available data were limited by inconsistencies in the methods, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of results. In particular, there was a reliance on data collected by subjective methods with minimal acknowledgment of the limitations, such as misreporting of food intake. There is a need for further work employing objective measurement of appetite and dietary intake following gastric bypass surgery to determine how these mechanisms may contribute to weight regulation in the longer term.

Abstract
Diet-induced obesity (DIO) reduces the orosensory perception of lipids in rodents and in some humans. Although bariatric surgery partially corrects this alteration, underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To explore whether metabolic changes might explain this fat taste disturbance, plasma metabolome analyses, two-bottle choice tests and fungiform papillae (Fun) counting were performed in vertical sleeve gastrectomized (VSG) mice and sham-operated controls. An exploratory clinic study was also carried out in adult patients undergone a VSG. In mice, we found that (i) the VSG reduces both the plasma neurotoxic signature due to the tryptophan/kynurenine (Trp/Kyn) pathway overactivation and the failure of fat preference found in sham-operated DIO mice, (ii) the activity of Trp/Kyn pathway is negatively correlated to the density of Fun, and (iii) the pharmacological inhibition of the Kyn synthesis mimics in non-operated DIO mice the positive effects of VSG (i.e., decrease of Kyn synthesis, increase of Fun number, improvement of the fat taste perception). In humans, a reduction of the plasma Kyn level is only found in patients displaying a post-surgery improvement of their fat taste sensitivity. Altogether these data provide a plausible metabolic explanation to the degradation of the orosensory lipid perception observed in obesity.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries, with worsening pandemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity as major cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. Clinical trials of nonsurgical obesity treatments have not shown benefits in CVD, although recent diabetes trials have demonstrated major CV benefits. In many retrospective and prospective cohort studies, however, metabolic (bariatric) surgery is associated with substantial and reproducible CVD benefits. Despite a lack of prospective, randomized clinical trials, data suggest metabolic surgery may be the most effective modality for CVD risk reduction, likely through weight loss and weight loss-independent mechanisms.

Abstract
The excitation of vagal mechanoreceptors located in the stomach wall directly contributes to satiation. Thus, a loss of gastric innervation would normally be expected to result in abrogated satiation, hyperphagia, and unwanted weight gain. While Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (RYGB) inevitably results in gastric denervation, paradoxically, bypassed subjects continue to experience satiation. Inspired by the literature in neurology on phantom limbs, I propose a new hypothesis in which damage to the stomach innervation during RYGB, including its vagal supply, leads to large-scale maladaptive changes in viscerosensory nerves and connected brain circuits. As a result, satiation may continue to arise, sometimes at exaggerated levels, even in subjects with a denervated or truncated stomach. The same maladaptive changes may also contribute to dysautonomia, unexplained pain, and new emotional responses to eating. I further revisit the metabolic benefits of bariatric surgery, with an emphasis on RYGB, in the light of this phantom satiation hypothesis.

Abstract
Central and peripheral mechanisms are both required for proper control of energy homeostasis. Among circulating plasma proteins, C1q/TNF-related proteins (CTRPs) have recently emerged as important regulators of sugar and fat metabolism. CTRP4, expressed in brain and adipose tissue, is unique among the family members in having two tandem globular C1q domains. We previously showed that central administration of recombinant CTRP4 suppresses food intake, suggesting a central nervous system role in regulating ingestive physiology. Whether this effect is pharmacological or physiological remains unclear. We used a loss-of-function knockout (KO) mouse model to clarify the physiological role of CTRP4. Under basal conditions, CTRP4 deficiency increased serum cholesterol levels and impaired glucose tolerance in male but not female mice fed a control low-fat diet. When challenged with a high-fat diet, male and female KO mice responded differently to weight gain and had different food intake patterns. On an obesogenic diet, male KO mice had similar weight gain as wild-type littermates. When fed ad libitum, KO male mice had greater meal number, shorter intermeal interval, and reduced satiety ratio. Female KO mice, in contrast, had lower body weight and adiposity. In the refeeding period following food deprivation, female KO mice had significantly higher food intake due to longer meal duration and reduced satiety ratio. Collectively, our data provide genetic evidence for a sex-dependent physiological role of CTRP4 in modulating food intake patterns and systemic energy metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery is proven to change eating behavior and cause sustained weight loss, yet the exact mechanisms underlying these changes are not clearly understood. We explore this in a novel way by examining how bariatric surgery affects the brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) axis. METHODS Patient demographics, serum, stool, eating behavior questionnaires, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were collected before and 6 months after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Differences in eating behavior and brain morphology and resting-state functional connectivity in core reward regions were correlated with serum metabolite and 16S microbiome data. RESULTS LSG resulted in significant weight loss and improvement in maladaptive eating behaviors as measured by the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS). Brain imaging showed a significant increase in brain volume of the putamen (p.adj < 0.05) and amygdala (p.adj < 0.05) after surgery. Resting-state connectivity between the precuneus and the putamen was significantly reduced after LSG (p.adj = 0.046). This change was associated with YFAS symptom count. Bacteroides, Ruminococcus, and Holdemanella were associated with reduced connectivity between these areas. Metabolomic profiles showed a positive correlation between this brain connection and a phosphatidylcholine metabolite. CONCLUSION Bariatric surgery modulates brain networks that affect eating behavior, potentially through effects on the gut microbiota and its metabolites.

Abstract
In rodents, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) decreases intake of, and preference for, foods or fluids that are high in sugar. Whether these surgically induced changes are due to decreases in the palatability of sugar stimuli is controversial. We used RYGB and sham-operated (SHAM) female rats to test the influence of prolonged ingestive experience with sugar solutions on the motivational potency of these stimuli to drive licking in brief-access (BA) tests. In experiment 1, RYGB attenuated intake of, and caloric preference for, 0.3 M sucrose during five consecutive, 46-h two-bottle tests (TBTs; sucrose). A second series of TBTs (5 consecutive, 46-h tests) with 1.0 M sucrose revealed similar results, except fluid preference for 1.0 M sucrose also significantly decreased. Before, between, and after the two series of TBTs, two sessions of BA tests (30 min; 10-s trials) with an array of sucrose concentrations (0 and 0.01-1.0 M) were conducted. Concentration-dependent licking and overall trial initiation did not differ between surgical groups in any test. In a similar experimental design in a second cohort of female rats, 0.6 and 2.0 M glucose (isocaloric with sucrose concentrations in experiment 1) were used in the TBTs; 0 and 0.06-2.0 M glucose were used in the BA tests. Outcomes were similar to those for experiment 1, except RYGB rats initiated fewer trials during the BA tests. Although RYGB profoundly affected intake of, and caloric preference for, sugar solutions and, with high concentrations, fluid preference, RYGB never influenced the motivational potency of sucrose or glucose to drive concentration-dependent licking in BA tests.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Bariatric surgery leads to a substantial decrease in energy intake. It is unclear whether this decrease in energy intake is simply due to eating smaller portions of the same food items or a shift in food preference towards less energy-dense foods. This review evaluates the existing literature on changes in food preferences after bariatric surgery and the potential mechanisms involved. RECENT FINDINGS Changes in food preferences have been reported; however, the evidence is mainly based on indirect measurements, such as self-reporting. When changes in food preferences are directly assessed, results contradict previous findings, indicating that results based on self-reporting must be interpreted with caution as they do not necessarily reflect actual behaviour. However, it seems that there could be inter-individual differences in the response to surgery. Future studies investigating changes in food preferences should not only focus on direct measured of behaviour but should also consider the heterogeneity of the response after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery is one of the most efficacious treatments for obesity, but the behavioral and physiological mechanisms through which it enacts its effects are not completely understood. The weight loss that follows RYGB surgery is due to some extent to decreased caloric intake. The perception of flavor and the sense of taste undoubtedly contribute to ingestion, and changes in taste sensation and flavor perception may, even in part, propel the altered feeding seen after RYGB surgery. Measuring observable behavior in non-human animal models of RYGB surgery is an objective way by which to evaluate underlying mechanism, including the influence of flavor and taste to intake changes after RYGB surgery, as well as the interaction of flavor and taste with post-oral consequences and learning phenomena. Collectively, the data in rodent models support the conclusion that neither palatability nor motivational potency are reduced following RYGB surgery. Indeed, rats still typically show preference for sweet and fatty solids and liquids, and positive flavor-guided hedonic responses for these substances remain stable in some tests. However, preference for these foods and fluids is reduced, and flavor-guided behaviors after long-term tests are reorganized. These patterns suggest that, while rats are still motivated to consume sweet and fatty consumables and find them palatable, they learn to limit their intake of them to avoid undesirable post-oral consequences. Abstract
With behavioral and pharmacological interventions continuously failing to tackle the obesity epidemic, bariatric surgery has been hailed as the most effective treatment strategy. Current literature suggests that bariatric surgery successfully decreases body weight and excess fat mass through targeting both variables of the energy homeostasis - energy intake and energy expenditure. Here we review current knowledge on changes in caloric consumption, an important arm in the energy balance equation, in rodent models of bariatric surgery. In particular, circadian feeding dynamics, post-surgical caloric intake at both "rapid weight loss" phase and "weight maintenance" phase, as well as meal pattern analysis will be the subject of this review. Considering that different types of bariatric surgery may trigger differential energy intake dynamics resulting in variable weight loss outcomes, the effects of most popular surgeries - vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and gastric banding (GB) - are elaborated. Potential candidate mechanisms underlying alterations in food intake and meal patterns following different bariatric procedures are briefly discussed at the end.

Abstract
Gastric bypass surgery is the most effective treatment and is often the only option for subjects with severe obesity. However, investigation of critical molecular mechanisms involved has been hindered by confounding of specific effects of surgery and side effects associated with acute surgical trauma. Here, we dissociate the two components by carrying out surgery in the lean state and testing its effectiveness to prevent diet-induced obesity later in life. Body weight and composition of female mice with RYGB performed at 6 weeks of age were not significantly different from sham-operated and age-matched non-surgical mice at the time of high-fat diet exposure 12 weeks after surgery. These female mice were completely protected from high-fat diet-induced obesity and accompanying metabolic impairments for up to 50 weeks. Similar effects were seen in male mice subjected to RYGB at 5-6 weeks, although growth was slightly inhibited and protection from diet-induced obesity was less complete. The findings confirm that RYGB does not indiscriminately lower body weight but specifically prevents excessive diet-induced obesity and ensuing metabolic impairments. This prevention of obesity model should be crucial for identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying gastric bypass surgery.

Abstract
To date, bariatric surgery remains the most effective strategy for the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities. However, given the enormity of the obesity epidemic, and sometimes variable results, it is not a feasible strategy for the treatment of all obese patients. A simple PubMed search for 'bariatric surgery' reveals over 28 000 papers that have been published since the 1940s when the first bariatric surgeries were performed. However, there is still an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms for the weight loss and metabolic success of surgery. An understanding of the mechanisms is important because it may lead to greater understanding of the pathophysiology of obesity and thus surgery-alternative strategies for the treatment of all obese patients. In this review, the potential mechanisms that underlie the success of surgery are discussed, with a focus on the potential endocrine, neural and other circulatory factors (eg, bile acids) that have been proposed to play a role.

Abstract
This article provides a summary of the topics discussed at the symposium titled "Bariatric Surgery and Its Effects on Taste and Food Selection," which was held at the Fortieth Annual Meeting of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences. Bariatric surgery such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is currently one of the most effective treatments available for weight loss and Type 2 diabetes. For this reason, it is of great interest to clinicians as well as to basic scientists studying the controls of feeding and energy balance. Despite the commonly held view by clinicians that RYGB patients change their food preferences away from fats and sugars in favor of less energy dense alternatives such as vegetables, the empirical support for this claim is equivocal. It is currently thought that the taste and palatability of fats and sugars are affected by the surgery. Some key preclinical and clinical findings addressing these issues were evaluated in this symposium.

Abstract
Orosensory perception of sweet stimulus is blunted in diet-induced obese (DIO) rodents. Although this alteration might contribute to unhealthy food choices, its origin remains to be understood. Cumulative evidence indicates that prebiotic manipulations of the gut microbiota are associated with changes in food intake by modulating hedonic and motivational drive for food reward. In the present study, we explore whether a prebiotic supplementation can also restore the taste sensation in DIO mice. The preference and licking behavior in response to various sucrose concentrations were determined using respectively two-bottle choice tests and gustometer analysis in lean and obese mice supplemented or not with 10% inulin-type fructans prebiotic (P) in a preventive manner. In DIO mice, P addition reduced the fat mass gain and energy intake, limited the gut dysbiosis and partially improved the sweet taste perception (rise both of sucrose preference and number of licks/10 s vs. non-supplemented DIO mice). No clear effect on orosensory perception of sucrose was found in the supplemented control mice. Therefore, a preventive P supplementation can partially correct the loss of sweet taste sensitivity found in DIO mice, with the efficiency of treatment being dependent from the nutritional status of mice (high fat diet vs. regular chow).

Abstract
Obesity is an escalating global chronic disease. Bariatric surgery is a very efficacious treatment for obesity and its comorbidities. Alterations to gastrointestinal anatomy during bariatric surgery result in neurological and physiological changes affecting hypothalamic signaling, gut hormones, bile acids, and gut microbiota, which coalesce to exert a profound influence on eating behavior. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms underlying eating behavior is essential in the management of patients after bariatric surgery. Studies investigating candidate mechanisms have expanded dramatically in the last decade. Herein we review the proposed mechanisms governing changes in eating behavior, food intake, and body weight after bariatric surgery. Additive or synergistic effects of both conditioned and unconditioned factors likely account for the complete picture of changes in eating behavior. Considered application of strategies designed to support the underlying principles governing changes in eating behavior holds promise as a means of optimizing responses to surgery and long-term outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alterations in taste perception and preferences may contribute to dietary changes and subsequent weight loss following bariatric surgery. METHODS A systematic search was performed to identify all articles investigating gustation, olfaction, and sensory perception in both animal and human studies following bariatric procedures. RESULTS Two hundred fifty-five articles were identified after database searches, bibliography inclusions and deduplication. Sixty-one articles were included. These articles provide evidence supporting changes in taste perception and hedonic taste following bariatric procedures. Taste sensitivity to sweet and fatty stimuli appears to increase post-operatively. Additionally, patients also have a reduced hedonic response to these stimuli. CONCLUSIONS Available evidence suggests that there is a change in taste perception following bariatric procedures, which may contribute to long-term maintenance of weight loss following surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND : Obesity is one of the main causes of glycemic change. Failure of clinical obesity treatment may lead to an increase in bariatric surgery. Dietary guidance, in conjunction with disabsorptive and hormonal factors resulting from the anatomical and physiological changes provoked by the surgery, is associated with changes in food intake. AIM To analyze food intake evolution during the first postoperative year of Roux-en-y gastric bypass in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or glycemic alteration. METHODS : This was a longitudinal and retrospective observational study. For food intake evolution analysis, linear regression models with normal errors were adjusted for each of the nutrients. RESULTS At 12 months, all patients presented improvement in glycemic levels (p<0.05). During the first postoperative year, there was a reduction in energy intake, macronutrients, consumption of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. Conversely, there was an increase in fiber intake and diet fractionation. It was observed that, despite gastric restrictions, the micronutrient intake specifically recommended for glycemic control was greater up to six months postoperatively. CONCLUSION There was change in the quantity and quality of food intake. It was the most prevalent glycemic control contributor up to six months postoperatively. At the end of one year, the diet underwent a change, showing a similar tendency to the preoperative food intake pattern.

Abstract
The obesity epidemic continues to escalate each year in the United States more than anywhere else in the world. The existing pharmaceutical and other nonsurgical treatments for morbid obesity produce suboptimal physiologic outcomes compared with those of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. RYGB has been the gold standard of bariatric surgery because the beneficial long-term outcomes, which include sustainable weight loss and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) resolution, are far superior to those obtained with other bariatric surgeries. However, the current understanding of RYGB's mechanisms of actions remains limited and incomplete. There is an urgent need to understand these mechanisms as gaining this knowledge may lead to the development of innovative and less invasive procedures and/or medical devices, which can mirror the favorable outcomes of RYGB surgery. In this review, we highlight current observations of the metabolic and physiologic events following RYGB, with a particular focus on the role of the anatomical reconfiguration of the gastrointestinal tract after RYGB.

Abstract
Two of the most popular bariatric procedures, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), are commonly considered metabolic surgeries because they are thought to affect metabolism in a weight loss-independent manner. In support of this classification, improvements in glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and even discontinuation of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) medication can occur before substantial postoperative weight loss. The mechanisms that underlie this effect are unknown. However, one of the common findings after VSG and RYGB in both animal models and humans is the sharp postprandial rise in several gut peptides, including the incretin and satiety peptide glucagonlike peptide-1 (GLP-1). The increase in endogenous GLP-1 signaling has been considered a primary pathway leading to postsurgical weight loss and improvements in glucose metabolism. However, the degree to which GLP-1 and other gut peptides are responsible for the metabolic successes after bariatric surgery is continually debated. In this review we discuss the mechanisms underlying the increase in GLP-1 and its potential role in the metabolic improvements after bariatric surgery, including remission of T2DM. Understanding the role of changes in gut peptides, or lack thereof, will be crucial in understanding the critical factors necessary for the metabolic success of bariatric surgery.

Abstract
It has been suggested that a shift in food choices leading to a diet with a lower energy density plays an important role in successful weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. A decreased hedonic drive to consume highly palatable foods may explain these changes in eating behavior. Here, we review the literature examining postoperative changes in mechanisms contributing to hedonic drive (food preferences, reinforcing value of food, dopamine signaling, and activity reward-related brain regions). The majority of studies reviewed support that RYGB decrease the hedonic drive to consume highly palatable foods. Still, in order to fully understand the complexity of these changes, we need studies combining sociological and psychological approaches with objective measures of actual food choices examining different measures of hedonic drive.

Surgically Induced Changes in Gut Microbiome and Hedonic Eating as Related to Weight Loss: Preliminary Findings in Obese Women Undergoing Bariatric Surgery. Psychosom Med 2017; 79:880-887. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Weight loss surgery results in significant changes in the anatomy, function, and intraluminal environment of the gastrointestinal tract affecting the gut microbiome. Although bariatric surgery results in sustained weight loss, decreased appetite, and hedonic eating, it is unknown whether the surgery-induced alterations in gut microbiota play a role in the observed changes in hedonic eating. We explored the following hypotheses: (1) laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) results in changes in gut microbial composition; (2) alterations in gut microbiota are related to weight loss; (3) alterations in gut microbiome are associated with changes in appetite and hedonic eating. METHODS Eight obese women underwent LSG. Their body mass index, body fat mass, food intake, hunger, hedonic eating scores, and stool samples were obtained at baseline and 1-month postsurgery. 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing was performed on stool samples. DESeq2 changes in microbial abundance. Multilevel-sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis was applied to genus-level abundance for discriminative microbial signatures. RESULTS LSG resulted in significant reductions in body mass index, food intake, and hedonic eating. A microbial signature composed of five bacterial genera discriminated between pre- and postsurgery status. Several bacterial genera were significantly associated with weight loss (Bilophila, q = 3E-05; Faecalibacterium q = 4E-05), lower appetite (Enterococcus, q = 3E-05), and reduced hedonic eating (Akkermansia, q = .037) after surgery. CONCLUSIONS In this preliminary analysis, changes in gut microbial abundance discriminated between pre- and postoperative status. Alterations in gut microbiome were significantly associated with weight loss and with reduced hedonic eating after surgery; however, a larger sample is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine the effect and mechanism of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on the improvement of diabetes according to the length of anastomosis and the gastric pouch volume in an animal model. METHODS Glucose intolerance was induced with a high-fat diet for 3 months in Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were subjected to conventional RYGB (cRYGB; 5% gastric pouch with 15-cm Roux limb, 40-cm biliopancreatic limb; n = 9), short-limb RYGB (sRYGB; 5%, 8, 4 cm; n = 9), fundus-sparing RYGB (fRYGB; 30%, 8, 4 cm; n = 9), or sham operation (n = 9). After 6 weeks, oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) were performed, and gut hormones including insulin, total GLP-1, GIP, and ghrelin were analyzed. RESULTS The cRYGB group showed significantly decreased food intake, body weight, and random glucose (p < 0.05). sRYGB resulted in a similar change of body weight loss to that of cRYGB, but with no improvement of hyperglycemia. The fRYGB group showed similar changes of body weight and random glucose to those of the sham group. In cRYGB and sRYGB, the level of insulin steeply increased until 30 min during OGTT. GLP-1 was higher at 30 min in cRYGB than in other groups, without significance. The fRYGB group showed a slowly increasing pattern in OGTT and GLP-1, and the lowest peak point in insulin and GIP. CONCLUSION cRYGB with 95% gastric resection was needed to achieve not only weight loss but also diabetes improvement, which could be related to the increase in GLP-1.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective treatment for obesity. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is the most commonly performed bariatric procedure and results in long-term weight loss. Alterations in food preference and choices may contribute to the long-term benefits of RYGB. This manuscript reviews the available literature documenting changes in food preference in both humans and experimental animals after RYGB and discusses the current theory on the underlying mechanisms involved. RECENT FINDINGS Obesity is associated with an increased preference for sweet and high-fat foods, and the most consistent evidence has been the shift away from these calorie-dense foods in both animal and human studies after RYGB. Self-reporting is the most common method used to record food preferences in humans, while more direct approaches have been used in animal work. This methodological heterogeneity may give rise to inconsistent findings. Future studies in humans should focus on direct measures to permit corroboration of mechanistic insights gained from animal studies.
