Excipients Used for Modified Nasal Drug Delivery: A Mini-Review of the Recent Advances

The ongoing challenging task in the field of nasal drug delivery is the maintenance of an efficient concentration of the active substance in the target area for an adequate period of time. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop effective new strategies for drug delivery to the nose, using cutting edge technology and materials for this particular type of drug delivery. This review gives an account of the critical components of nasal drug delivery and the parameters influencing drug absorption in the nose, including the excipients required for modified drug administration.

Lung Volume Calculation in Preclinical MicroCT: A Fast Geometrical Approach

In this study, we present a time-efficient protocol for thoracic volume calculation as a proxy for total lung volume. We hypothesize that lung volume can be calculated indirectly from this thoracic volume. We compared the measured thoracic volume with manually segmented and automatically thresholded lung volumes, with manual segmentation as the gold standard. A linear regression formula was obtained and used for calculating the theoretical lung volume. This volume was compared with the gold standard volumes. In healthy animals, thoracic volume was 887.45 mm³, manually delineated lung volume 554.33 mm³ and thresholded aerated lung volume 495.38 mm³ on average. Theoretical lung volume was 554.30 mm³. Finally, the protocol was applied to three animal models of lung pathology (lung metastasis and transgenic primary lung tumor and fungal infection). In confirmed pathologic animals, thoracic volumes were: 893.20 mm³, 860.12 and 1027.28 mm³. Manually delineated volumes were 640.58, 503.91 and 882.42 mm³, respectively. Thresholded lung volumes were 315.92 mm³, 408.72 and 236 mm³, respectively. Theoretical lung volume resulted in 635.28, 524.30 and 863.10.42 mm³. No significant differences were observed between volumes. This confirmed the potential use of this protocol for lung volume calculation in pathologic models.

Imatinib alleviates lung injury and prolongs survival in ventilated rats

Imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, attenuates pulmonary edema and inflammation in lung injury. However, the physiological effects of this drug and their impact on outcomes are poorly characterized. Using serial computed tomography (CT), we tested the hypothesis that imatinib reduces injury severity and improves survival in ventilated rats. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was instilled in the trachea (pH 1.5, 2.5 mL/kg) of anesthetized, intubated supine rats. Animals were randomized (n = 17 each group) to receive intraperitoneal imatinib or vehicle immediately prior to HCl. All rats then received mechanical ventilation. CT was performed hourly for 4 h. Images were quantitatively analyzed to assess the progression of radiological abnormalities. Injury severity was confirmed via hourly blood gases, serum biomarkers, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and histopathology. Serial blood drug levels were measured in a subset of rats. Imatinib reduced mortality while delaying functional and radiological injury progression: out of 17 rats per condition, 2 control vs. 8 imatinib-treated rats survived until the end of the experiment (P = 0.02). Imatinib attenuated edema after lung injury (P < 0.05), and survival time in both groups was negatively correlated with increased lung mass (R2 = 0.70) as well as other physiological and CT parameters. Capillary leak (BAL protein concentration) was significantly lower in the treated group (P = 0.04). Peak drug concentration was reached after 70 min, and the drug half-life was 150 min. Imatinib decreased both mortality and lung injury severity in mechanically ventilated rats. Pharmacological inhibition of edema could be used during mechanical ventilation to improve the severity and outcome of lung injury.

Silymarin/curcumin loaded albumin nanoparticles coated by chitosan as muco-inhalable delivery system observing anti-inflammatory and anti COVID-19 characterizations in oleic acid triggered lung injury and in vitro COVID-19 experiment

Respiratory infected by COVID-19 represents a major global health problem at moment even after recovery from virus corona. Since, the lung lesions for infected patients are still sufferings from acute respiratory distress syndrome including alveolar septal edema, pneumonia, hyperplasia, and hyaline membranes Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify additional candidates having ability to overcome inflammatory process and can enhance efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19. The polypenolic extracts were integrated into moeties of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and then were coated by chitosan as a mucoadhesion polymer. The results of interleukin-6, and c-reactive protein showed significant reduction in group treated by Encap. SIL + CUR (64 ± 0.8 Pg/μL & 6 ± 0.5 μg/μL) compared to group treated by Cham. + CUR (102 ± 0.8 Pg/μL & 7 ± 0.5 μg/μL) respectively and free capsules (with no any drug inside) (148 ± 0.6 Pg/μL & 10 ± 0.6 μg/μL) respectively. Histopathology profile was improved completely. Additionally, encapsulating silymarin showed anti-viral activity in vitro COVID-19 experiment. It can be summarized that muco-inhalable delivery system (MIDS) loaded by silymarin can be used to overcome inflammation induced by oleic acid and to overcome COVID-19.

Diminishing Efficacy of Prone Positioning With Late Application in Evolving Lung Injury

OBJECTIVES

It is not known how lung injury progression during mechanical ventilation modifies pulmonary responses to prone positioning. We compared the effects of prone positioning on regional lung aeration in late versus early stages of lung injury.

DESIGN

Prospective, longitudinal imaging study.

SETTING

Research imaging facility at The University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) and Medical and Surgical ICUs at Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA).

SUBJECTS

Anesthetized swine and patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (acute respiratory distress syndrome).

INTERVENTIONS

Lung injury was induced by bronchial hydrochloric acid (3.5 mL/kg) in 10 ventilated Yorkshire pigs and worsened by supine nonprotective ventilation for 24 hours. Whole-lung CT was performed 2 hours after hydrochloric acid (Day 1) in both prone and supine positions and repeated at 24 hours (Day 2). Prone and supine images were registered (superimposed) in pairs to measure the effects of positioning on the aeration of each tissue unit. Two patients with early acute respiratory distress syndrome were compared with two patients with late acute respiratory distress syndrome, using electrical impedance tomography to measure the effects of body position on regional lung mechanics.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS

Gas exchange and respiratory mechanics worsened over 24 hours, indicating lung injury progression. On Day 1, prone positioning reinflated 18.9% ± 5.2% of lung mass in the posterior lung regions. On Day 2, position-associated dorsal reinflation was reduced to 7.3% ± 1.5% (p < 0.05 vs Day 1). Prone positioning decreased aeration in the anterior lungs on both days. Although prone positioning improved posterior lung compliance in the early acute respiratory distress syndrome patients, it had no effect in late acute respiratory distress syndrome subjects.

CONCLUSIONS

The effects of prone positioning on lung aeration may depend on the stage of lung injury and duration of prior ventilation; this may limit the clinical efficacy of this treatment if applied late.

Positional Therapy and Regional Pulmonary Ventilation

BACKGROUND

Prone ventilation redistributes lung inflation along the gravitational axis; however, localized, nongravitational effects of body position are less well characterized. The authors hypothesize that positional inflation improvements follow both gravitational and nongravitational distributions. This study is a nonoverlapping reanalysis of previously published large animal data.

METHODS

Five intubated, mechanically ventilated pigs were imaged before and after lung injury by tracheal injection of hydrochloric acid (2 ml/kg). Computed tomography scans were performed at 5 and 10 cm H2O positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in both prone and supine positions. All paired prone-supine images were digitally aligned to each other. Each unit of lung tissue was assigned to three clusters (K-means) according to positional changes of its density and dimensions. The regional cluster distribution was analyzed. Units of tissue displaying lung recruitment were mapped.

RESULTS

We characterized three tissue clusters on computed tomography: deflation (increased tissue density and contraction), limited response (stable density and volume), and reinflation (decreased density and expansion). The respective clusters occupied (mean ± SD including all studied conditions) 29.3 ± 12.9%, 47.6 ± 11.4%, and 23.1 ± 8.3% of total lung mass, with similar distributions before and after lung injury. Reinflation was slightly greater at higher PEEP after injury. Larger proportions of the reinflation cluster were contained in the dorsal versus ventral (86.4 ± 8.5% vs. 13.6 ± 8.5%, P < 0.001) and in the caudal versus cranial (63.4 ± 11.2% vs. 36.6 ± 11.2%, P < 0.001) regions of the lung. After injury, prone positioning recruited 64.5 ± 36.7 g of tissue (11.4 ± 6.7% of total lung mass) at lower PEEP, and 49.9 ± 12.9 g (8.9 ± 2.8% of total mass) at higher PEEP; more than 59.0% of this recruitment was caudal.

CONCLUSIONS

During mechanical ventilation, lung reinflation and recruitment by the prone positioning were primarily localized in the dorso-caudal lung. The local effects of positioning in this lung region may determine its clinical efficacy.

Progression of regional lung strain and heterogeneity in lung injury: assessing the evolution under spontaneous breathing and mechanical ventilation

BACKGROUND

Protective mechanical ventilation (MV) aims at limiting global lung deformation and has been associated with better clinical outcomes in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. In ARDS lungs without MV support, the mechanisms and evolution of lung tissue deformation remain understudied. In this work, we quantify the progression and heterogeneity of regional strain in injured lungs under spontaneous breathing and under MV.

METHODS

Lung injury was induced by lung lavage in murine subjects, followed by 3 h of spontaneous breathing (SB-group) or 3 h of low V_t mechanical ventilation (MV-group). Micro-CT images were acquired in all subjects at the beginning and at the end of the ventilation stage following induction of lung injury. Regional strain, strain progression and strain heterogeneity were computed from image-based biomechanical analysis. Three-dimensional regional strain maps were constructed, from which a region-of-interest (ROI) analysis was performed for the regional strain, the strain progression, and the strain heterogeneity.

RESULTS

After 3 h of ventilation, regional strain levels were significantly higher in 43.7% of the ROIs in the SB-group. Significant increase in regional strain was found in 1.2% of the ROIs in the MV-group. Progression of regional strain was found in 100% of the ROIs in the SB-group, whereas the MV-group displayed strain progression in 1.2% of the ROIs. Progression in regional strain heterogeneity was found in 23.4% of the ROIs in the SB-group, while the MV-group resulted in 4.7% of the ROIs showing significant changes. Deformation progression is concurrent with an increase of non-aerated compartment in SB-group (from 13.3% ± 1.6% to 37.5% ± 3.1%), being higher in ventral regions of the lung.

CONCLUSIONS

Spontaneous breathing in lung injury promotes regional strain and strain heterogeneity progression. In contrast, low V_t MV prevents regional strain and heterogeneity progression in injured lungs.

Multi-resolution convolutional neural networks for fully automated segmentation of acutely injured lungs in multiple species

Segmentation of lungs with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a challenging task due to diffuse opacification in dependent regions which results in little to no contrast at the lung boundary. For segmentation of severely injured lungs, local intensity and texture information, as well as global contextual information, are important factors for consistent inclusion of intrapulmonary structures. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework which uses a novel multi-resolution convolutional neural network (ConvNet) for automated segmentation of lungs in multiple mammalian species with injury models similar to ARDS. The multi-resolution model eliminates the need to tradeoff between high-resolution and global context by using a cascade of low-resolution to high-resolution networks. Transfer learning is used to accommodate the limited number of training datasets. The model was initially pre-trained on human CT images, and subsequently fine-tuned on canine, porcine, and ovine CT images with lung injuries similar to ARDS. The multi-resolution model was compared to both high-resolution and low-resolution networks alone. The multi-resolution model outperformed both the low- and high-resolution models, achieving an overall mean Jacaard index of 0.963 ± 0.025 compared to 0.919 ± 0.027 and 0.950 ± 0.036, respectively, for the animal dataset (N=287). The multi-resolution model achieves an overall average symmetric surface distance of 0.438 ± 0.315 mm, compared to 0.971 ± 0.368 mm and 0.657 ± 0.519 mm for the low-resolution and high-resolution models, respectively. We conclude that the multi-resolution model produces accurate segmentations in severely injured lungs, which is attributed to the inclusion of both local and global features.

Imaging the Injured Lung: Mechanisms of Action and Clinical Use

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) consists of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure characterized by massive and heterogeneously distributed loss of lung aeration caused by diffuse inflammation and edema present in interstitial and alveolar spaces. It is defined by consensus criteria, which include diffuse infiltrates on chest imaging-either plain radiography or computed tomography. This review will summarize how imaging sciences can inform modern respiratory management of ARDS and continue to increase the understanding of the acutely injured lung. This review also describes newer imaging methodologies that are likely to inform future clinical decision-making and potentially improve outcome. For each imaging modality, this review systematically describes the underlying principles, technology involved, measurements obtained, insights gained by the technique, emerging approaches, limitations, and future developments. Finally, integrated approaches are considered whereby multimodal imaging may impact management of ARDS.

Voxel-wise assessment of lung aeration changes on CT images using image registration: application to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

PURPOSE

(1) To improve the accuracy of global and regional alveolar-recruitment quantification in CT scan pairs by accounting for lung-tissue displacements and deformation, (2) To propose a method for local-recruitment calculation.

METHODS

Recruitment was calculated by subtracting the quantity of non-aerated lung tissues between expiration and inspiration. To assess global recruitment, lung boundaries were first interactively delineated at inspiration, and then they were warped based on automatic image registration to define the boundaries at expiration. To calculate regional recruitment, the lung mask defined at inspiration was cut into pieces, and these were also warped to encompass the same tissues at expiration. Local-recruitment map was calculated as follows: For each voxel at expiration, the matching location at inspiration was determined by image registration, non-aerated voxels were counted in the neighborhood of the respective locations, and the voxel count difference was normalized by the neighborhood size. The methods were evaluated on 120 image pairs of 12 pigs with experimental acute respiratory distress syndrome.

RESULTS

The dispersion of global- and regional-recruitment values decreased when using image registration, compared to the conventional approach neglecting tissue motion. Local-recruitment maps overlaid onto the original images were visually consistent, and the sum of these values over the whole lungs was very close to the global-recruitment estimate, except four outliers.

CONCLUSIONS

Image registration can compensate lung-tissue displacements and deformation, thus improving the quantification of alveolar recruitment. Local-recruitment calculation can also benefit from image registration, and its values can be overlaid onto the original image to display a local-recruitment map. They also can be integrated over arbitrarily shaped regions to assess regional or global recruitment.

Quantitative morphometric analysis of adult teleost fish by X-ray computed tomography

Vertebrate models provide indispensable paradigms to study development and disease. Their analysis requires a quantitative morphometric study of the body, organs and tissues. This is often impeded by pigmentation and sample size. X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) allows high-resolution volumetric tissue analysis, largely independent of sample size and transparency to visual light. Importantly, micro-CT data are inherently quantitative. We report a complete pipeline of high-throughput 3D data acquisition and image analysis, including tissue preparation and contrast enhancement for micro-CT imaging down to cellular resolution, automated data processing and organ or tissue segmentation that is applicable to comparative 3D morphometrics of small vertebrates. Applied to medaka fish, we first create an annotated anatomical atlas of the entire body, including inner organs as a quantitative morphological description of an adult individual. This atlas serves as a reference model for comparative studies. Using isogenic medaka strains we show that comparative 3D morphometrics of individuals permits identification of quantitative strain-specific traits. Thus, our pipeline enables high resolution morphological analysis as a basis for genotype-phenotype association studies of complex genetic traits in vertebrates.

Quantitative CT assessment of lung injury after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a porcine cardiac arrest model of different downtimes

Background

Utilize quantitative computed tomography (QCT) to detect and evaluate the severity of lung injury after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a porcine cardiac arrest (CA) model with different downtimes.

Methods

Twenty-one male domestic pigs weighing 38±3 kg were randomized into 3 groups: the sham group (n=5), the ventricular fibrillation (VF) 5 min (VF5) group (n=8), and the VF 10 min (VF10) group (n=8). VF was induced and untreated for 5 (VF5 group) or 10 (VF10 group) min before the commencement of manual CPR. Eight animals (8/8, 100%) in VF5 and 6 (6/8, 75%) in VF10 were successfully resuscitated. Chest QCT scans and arterial blood gas tests were performed at baseline and 6 h post-resuscitation. The QCT score, volume, and weight of ground-glass opacification (GGO), which was defined as poorly aerated regions with a CT value ranging from -500 Hounsfield units (HU) to -100 HU, and intense parenchymal opacification (IPO), which was defined as a non-aerated area with a CT value greater than -100 HU, were quantitatively measured.

Results

Significantly shorter durations of CPR and fewer defibrillations were observed in the VF5 group compared with the VF10 group [duration of CPR: VF5 (6±0 minutes) versus VF10 (8.3±1.5 minutes), P<0.05; numbers of defibrillation: VF5 (1±0) versus VF10 (2.2±0.8), P<0.05]. Compared with the baseline or sham animals, declining gas exchanges (end-tidal CO₂, PO₂, oxygen index) were observed in both VF groups; however, there were no significant differences in gas exchanges between the VF groups. Compared with the VF5 group, the GGO QCT score, volume, and weight were significantly greater in the VF10 group (P=0.002, 0.001, and 0.002 respectively), while no significant differences were found in the IPO QCT score, volume, or weight between two the VF groups (P=0.354, 0.447, and 0.512 respectively).

Conclusions

QCT analysis enables unique non-invasive assessments of different lung injuries (IPO and GGO lesions) that can clearly distinguish heterogeneous lesions and allow for early detection and quantitative monitoring of the severity of lung injury following CPR. QCT could provide a basis for clinical early ventilation strategy management after CPR.

Unstable Inflation Causing Injury. Insight from Prone Position and Paired Computed Tomography Scans

RATIONALE

It remains unclear how prone positioning improves survival in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Using serial computed tomography (CT), we previously reported that "unstable" inflation (i.e., partial aeration with large tidal density swings, indicating increased local strain) is associated with injury progression.

OBJECTIVES

We prospectively tested whether prone position contains the early propagation of experimental lung injury by stabilizing inflation.

METHODS

Injury was induced by tracheal hydrochloric acid in rats; after randomization to supine or prone position, injurious ventilation was commenced using high tidal volume and low positive end-expiratory pressure. Paired end-inspiratory (EI) and end-expiratory (EE) CT scans were acquired at baseline and hourly up to 3 hours. Each sequential pair (EI, EE) of CT images was superimposed in parametric response maps to analyze inflation. Unstable inflation was then measured in each voxel in both dependent and nondependent lung. In addition, five pigs were imaged (EI and EE) prone versus supine, before and (1 hour) after hydrochloric acid aspiration.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS

In rats, prone position limited lung injury propagation and increased survival (11/12 vs. 7/12 supine; P = 0.01). EI-EE densities, respiratory mechanics, and blood gases deteriorated more in supine versus prone rats. At baseline, more voxels with unstable inflation occurred in dependent versus nondependent regions when supine (41 ± 6% vs. 18 ± 7%; P < 0.01) but not when prone. In supine pigs, unstable inflation predominated in dorsal regions and was attenuated by prone positioning.

CONCLUSIONS

Prone position limits the radiologic progression of early lung injury. Minimizing unstable inflation in this setting may alleviate the burden of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Looking closer at acute respiratory distress syndrome: the role of advanced imaging techniques

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Advanced imaging techniques have provided invaluable insights in understanding of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and the effect of therapeutic strategies, thanks to the possibility of gaining regional information and moving from simple 'anatomical' information to in-vivo functional imaging.

RECENT FINDINGS

Computed tomography (CT) led to the understanding of several ARDS mechanisms and interaction with mechanical ventilation. It is nowadays frequently part of routine diagnostic workup, often leading to treatment changes. Moreover, CT is a reference for novel techniques both in clinical and preclinical studies. Bedside transthoracic lung ultrasound allows semiquantitative regional analysis of lung aeration, identifies ARDS lung morphology and response to therapeutic maneuvers. Electrical impedance tomography is a radiation-free, functional, bedside, imaging modality which allows a real-time monitoring of regional ventilation. Finally, positron emission tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique that allows to trace physiologic processes, by administration of a radioactive molecule. PET with FDG has been applied to patients with ARDS, thanks to its ability to track the inflammatory cells activity.

SUMMARY

Progresses in lung imaging are key to individualize therapy, diagnosis, and pathophysiological mechanism at play in any patient at any specified time, helping to move toward personalized medicine for ARDS.

Tidal changes on CT and progression of ARDS

Background

Uncertain prediction of outcome in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) impedes individual patient management and clinical trial design.

Objectives

To develop a radiological metric of injurious inflation derived from matched inspiratory and expiratory CT scans, calibrate it in a model of experimental lung injury, and test it in patients with ARDS.

Methods

73 anaesthetised rats (acid aspiration model) were ventilated (protective or non-protective) for up to 4 hours to generate a spectrum of lung injury. CT was performed (inspiratory and expiratory) at baseline each hour, paired inspiratory and expiratory images were superimposed and voxels tracked in sequential scans. In nine patients with ARDS, paired inspiratory and expiratory CT scans from the first intensive care unit week were analysed.

Results

In experimental studies, regions of lung with unstable inflation (ie, partial or reversible airspace filling reflecting local strain) were the areas in which subsequent progression of injury was greatest in terms of progressive infiltrates (R=0.77) and impaired compliance (R=0.67, p<0.01). In patients with ARDS, a threshold fraction of tissue with unstable inflation was apparent: >28% in all patients who died and ≤28% in all who survived, whereas segregation of survivors versus non-survivors was not possible based on oxygenation or lung mechanics.

Conclusions

A single set of superimposed inspiratory–expiratory CT scans may predict progression of lung injury and outcome in ARDS; if these preliminary results are validated, this could facilitate clinical trial recruitment and individualised care.

Visualizing the Propagation of Acute Lung Injury

BACKGROUND

Mechanical ventilation worsens acute respiratory distress syndrome, but this secondary "ventilator-associated" injury is variable and difficult to predict. The authors aimed to visualize the propagation of such ventilator-induced injury, in the presence (and absence) of a primary underlying lung injury, and to determine the predictors of propagation.

METHODS

Anesthetized rats (n = 20) received acid aspiration (hydrochloric acid) followed by ventilation with moderate tidal volume (V(T)). In animals surviving ventilation for at least 2 h, propagation of injury was quantified by using serial computed tomography. Baseline lung status was assessed by oxygenation, lung weight, and lung strain (V(T)/expiratory lung volume). Separate groups of rats without hydrochloric acid aspiration were ventilated with large (n = 10) or moderate (n = 6) V(T).

RESULTS

In 15 rats surviving longer than 2 h, computed tomography opacities spread outward from the initial site of injury. Propagation was associated with higher baseline strain (propagation vs. no propagation [mean ± SD]: 1.52 ± 0.13 vs. 1.16 ± 0.20, P < 0.01) but similar oxygenation and lung weight. Propagation did not occur where baseline strain was less than 1.29. In healthy animals, large V(T) caused injury that was propagated inward from the lung periphery; in the absence of preexisting injury, propagation did not occur where strain was less than 2.0.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with healthy lungs, underlying injury causes propagation to occur at a lower strain threshold and it originates at the site of injury; this suggests that tissue around the primary lesion is more sensitive. Understanding how injury is propagated may ultimately facilitate a more individualized monitoring or management.

Mouse Models of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Review of Analytical Approaches, Pathologic Features, and Common Measurements

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe pulmonary reaction requiring hospitalization, which is incited by many causes, including bacterial and viral pneumonia as well as near drowning, aspiration of gastric contents, pancreatitis, intravenous drug use, and abdominal trauma. In humans, ARDS is very well defined by a list of clinical parameters. However, until recently no consensus was available regarding the criteria of ARDS that should be evident in an experimental animal model. This lack was rectified by a 2011 workshop report by the American Thoracic Society, which defined the main features proposed to delineate the presence of ARDS in laboratory animals. These should include histological changes in parenchymal tissue, altered integrity of the alveolar capillary barrier, inflammation, and abnormal pulmonary function. Murine ARDS models typically are defined by such features as pulmonary edema and leukocyte infiltration in cytological preparations of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and/or lung sections. Common pathophysiological indicators of ARDS in mice include impaired pulmonary gas exchange and histological evidence of inflammatory infiltrates into the lung. Thus, morphological endpoints remain a vital component of data sets assembled from animal ARDS models.
