Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thyroid disorders and diabetes mellitus are prevalent conditions in the modern era. Moreover, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the established (prognostic as well as diagnostic) marker for long-term glycemic control, whereas the lipid profile is the marker for cardiovascular risks. The association of hypothyroidism with dyslipidemia is also a well-established fact. The current study explores a correlation between thyroid profile, glycemic status, and various lipoprotein indices. OBJECTIVE To look for an association between thyroid profile, glycemic status, and various lipoprotein indices. METHODOLOGY The cross-sectional study conducted at AIIMS Gorakhpur included a total of 108 subjects, with 37 normal subjects (Group I) and 71 patients) with T2DM (Type-2 diabetes mellitus) (Group II). Baseline characteristics of the two groups were compared for age, sex, presence of hypertension, fasting blood glucose, and body mass index (BMI). Blood samples were collected from the patients. The sera were analyzed for HbA1c and lipid profile, which included total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Serum samples were also used to estimate the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and triiodothyronine (fT3). The association between thyroid profile, glycemic status, and various lipoprotein indices was calculated. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality of the data. Spearmann correlation was used for nonparametric data. RESULTS There were significantly higher levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C levels in T2DM subjects than in non-diabetic subjects. There was also a significant positive correlation observed between TSH and TC among the normal control group (ρ =0.348, P=0.04). Similarly, significant positive correlations were found for TG (ρ =0.354, P=0.04) and LDL-C (ρ =0.431, P=0.03) among non-diabetic subjects. Among patients with T2DM, TSH was significantly correlated positively with TG (ρ =0.530, P=0.006) and LDL-C (ρ =0.443, P=0.03). Similarly, in the same group, among lipid ratios, TG/HDL-C (ρ =0.311, P=0.04) and LDL-C/HDL-C (ρ =0.227, P=0.05) were significantly correlated to TSH. Furthermore, there were significant positive correlations between TSH and HbA1c (ρ =0.301, P=0.04). fT3 was found to have a strong negative correlation with HbA1c among patients with T2DM (ρ =-0.454, P=0.02). CONCLUSION Thyroid disorders exert significant effects on glycemic control and lipid metabolism, which may impact HbA1c levels and lipid profile parameters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Free triiodothyronine (FT3) is an independent risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with euthyroid. However, whether FT3 has an independent effect on NAFLD in a population of type 2 diabetes remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to identify the potential role of FT3 in NAFLD with T2DM. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. Patient. A total of 859 T2DM patients who met the inclusion criteria were included. There were 506 T2DM patients without NAFLD and 353 T2DM patients with NAFLD. METHODS The independent samples t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test were used for continuous variables of different distribution types, while the chi-square test was used for categorical variables. Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression were used to analyze the correlation between FT3 and clinical measurements and biochemical indicators. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent predictors. RESULTS Patients with NAFLD had higher BMI, SBP, and DBP, longer duration of T2DM, and higher islet function index, blood glucose index, liver function index, renal function index, blood lipid index, and FT3. We also found that FT3 was affected by other five indicators, including ALT, CR, GGT, TC, and LDL-C only in the NAFLD group but not in the non-NAFLD group. FT3 was significantly associated with NAFLD in T2DM patients, and the prevalence of NAFLD increased gradually from the lowest FT3 tertile to the highest FT3 tertile (P for trend < 0.001). CONCLUSION FT3 is independently associated with NAFLD in hospitalized T2DM patients after rigorous adjustment for various metabolic parameters.

Abstract
Background: Though the functional states of other endocrine systems are not defined on the basis of levels of controlling hormones, the assessment of thyroid function is based on levels of the controlling hormone thyrotropin (TSH). We, therefore, addressed the question as to whether levels of thyroid hormones [free thyroxine (fT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3)/free triiodothyronine (fT3)], or TSH levels, within and beyond the reference ranges, provide the better guide to the range of clinical parameters associated with thyroid status. Methods: A PubMed/MEDLINE search of studies up to October 2019, examining associations of levels of thyroid hormones and TSH, taken simultaneously in the same individuals, with clinical parameters was performed. We analyzed atrial fibrillation, other cardiac parameters, osteoporosis and fracture, cancer, dementia, frailty, mortality, features of the metabolic syndrome, and pregnancy outcomes. Studies were assessed for quality by using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa score. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines were followed. A meta-analysis of the associations was performed to determine the relative likelihood of fT4, TT3/fT3, and TSH levels that are associated with the clinical parameters. Results: We identified 58 suitable articles and a total of 1880 associations. In general, clinical parameters were associated with thyroid hormone levels significantly more often than with TSH levels-the converse was not true for any of the clinical parameters. In the 1880 considered associations, fT4 levels were significantly associated with clinical parameters in 50% of analyses. The respective frequencies for TT3/fT3 and TSH levels were 53% and 23% (p < 0.0001 for both fT4 and TT3/fT3 vs. TSH). The fT4 and TT3/fT3 levels were comparably associated with clinical parameters (p = 0.71). More sophisticated statistical analyses, however, indicated that the associations with TT3/fT3 were not as robust as the associations with fT4. Conclusions: Thyroid hormones levels, and in particular fT4 levels, seem to have stronger associations with clinical parameters than do TSH levels. Associations of clinical parameters with TSH levels can be explained by the strong negative population correlation between thyroid hormones and TSH. Clinical and research components of thyroidology currently based on the measurement of the thyroid state by reference to TSH levels warrant reconsideration.

Abstract
To evaluate the association between thyroid hormones (TH) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in postmenopausal women (PmW), a cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 1000 participants of PmW (40-65 years). Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) were evaluated. The MS was defined using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) ethnicity-specific definitions for Asian. Participants were classified into three groups according to the TSH reference range: high-TSH (≥4.2 mU/L), low-TSH (<0.1mU/L), and normal-TSH (0.1-4.2 mU/L) group. Serum triglycerides (TG) levels were higher in low-TSH group and high-TSH group compared with normal-TSH group (p < .05). The whole sample was stratified into <60 and ≥60 years subgroups. In the ≥60 years group, fT4 was negatively correlated with waist circumference (WC) (p = .028) and positively correlated with fasting blood glucose (FBG) (p = .043), meanwhile TSH was positively correlated with WC only in the control subjects (p = .014). No difference was found between TH and the number of MS components. It was demonstrated that serum fT4 levels were associated with FBG and WC, while TSH was associated with WC in elderly PmW without MS.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the association between the thyroid hormones(FT3, FT4 and TSH) and the lipid profile markers(HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides) values in middle-aged women with no metabolic disorders and recurrent chronic symptomatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS We carried out an analytical cross-sectional study in euthyroid women with recurrent chronic symptoms of at least six months with no apparent diagnosis who attended the endocrinological gynaecology outpatient service of a private clinic in Lima-Peru during 2012-2014. Participants who met the eligibility criteria were evaluated according to their thyroid hormones(FT3, FT4 and TSH) and lipid profile markers(HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides) values. We elaborated univariate/multivariate linear regression models to evaluate the association between the thyroid markers and the lipid profile levels. The reported association measure was the beta coefficient(β) with its respective p-value. RESULTS We analyzed 211 participants, the average age was 44.9 ± 14.0(SD) years, the FT3 and FT4 mean levels were 3.2 ± 0.4 pg/mL and 1.2 ± 0.2 ng/dL respectively, while the TSH median was 2.8(IQR:1.9-4.0) μU/mL. The mean or median levels of LDL-c, HDL-c and triglycerides were of 137.5 ± 37.9 mg/dL, 54.0 ± 15.0 mg/dL and 118.5(IQR:79.5-169.5) mg/dL respectively. In the multivariate linear regression model between the FT3 and LDL-c levels, we found that for each increase in a FT3 unit, the LDL-c values decreased on average 30.85 mg/dL(p < 0.01). We found no statistically significant associations in the other multivariate models of linear regression, among the other thyroid hormones and lipid markers. CONCLUSION We found an inverse association between the FT3 and LDL-c values in women with chronic gynaecological symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The concept is now emerging that higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and lower thyroid hormone levels within the euthyroid range may adversely affect atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between thyroid parameters and lipids profile in a cohort of euthyroid diabetic subjects. METHODS Four hundred and sixty-two euthyroid type 2 diabetes subjects (302 males and 160 females) were consecutively recruited. Clinical and anthropometric data was collected from all participants. Whole blood samples were drawn in the morning after an overnight fasting for the measurement of serum TSH, free thyroxine (FT4), free triiothyronine (FT3), anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) levels, as well as lipid concentrations and glucose. RESULTS TSH was higher in females than males. Stratified by TSH, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) level increased in subjects with TSH ≥2.5uIU/mL (P = 0.004). And TSH was associated with HDL-c in a Pearson correlation test, however, the association failed to attain significance in partial correlation analyses, adjusted for age, sex, duration of diabetes, fasting glucose and BMI. In females, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) level was significant lower in subjects with TSH <2.5uIU/mL. TSH was significantly associated with TC and LDL-c, even in a partial correlation analysis (P = 0.006 and 0.011, respectively). In a multiple linear regression analysis (stepwise), TSH was positive associated with TC (β = 0.202, P = 0.005) and LDL-c (β = 0.144, P = 0.010). In one hundred and six patients having TPO antibody assays, 6 (5.66%) were positive. The blood pressure and lipid levels were lower in TPO-Ab positive patients, however, the differences were not significantly. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, we identified TSH was positively associated with serum TC and LDL-c in euthyroid diabetic women. Our analysis in the subgroup having TPO antibody assays demonstrating non-significantly lower TC levels among seropositive subjects was consistent with the above stated consideration for women as a whole. Further investigations are needed to understand the intimate mechanisms of lipid metabolism in type 2 diabetes with respect to thyroid function.
