Abstract
Our study aims to investigate whether preoperative red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has a prognostic value for patients after gastric cancer (GC) surgery. We searched articles in 3 databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library on May 16th, 2022. The prognostic indicators included overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RevMan 5.3 (The Cochrane Collaboration, London, United Kingdom) and Stata V16.0 were used for statistical analysis. The Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Interventions tool was used to assess risk of bias of the included studies. Ten articles involving 2740 patients were included. RDW was a prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio = 1.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-2.37, P < .01) and DFS (hazard ratio = 1.99, I2 = 26%, 95% CI = 1.53-2.58, P < .01) for GC patients. Meanwhile, there were some differences between the high RDW group and the low RDW group. We found more patients older than 60 years old (OR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.08-6.13, P = .03), larger tumor diameter (OR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.33-2.85, P < .01) and later T stage (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.07-3.42, P = .03) in the high RDW group than the low RDW group. No statistic difference was found in gender, N stage, tumor node metastasis stage, vascular invasion, differentiation, and adjuvant therapy between the 2 groups (P > .05). RDW was an independent prognostic factor for both OS and DFS of GC patients. High RDW level were strongly associated with poor survival.

Abstract
Background For cancer patients, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a readily accessible and cost-effective preoperative prognostic predictor. This study aimed to determine whether RDW is a predictive factor for individuals undergoing radical surgery for gastric cancer (GC). Methods A literature search was performed to select relevant studies for inclusion in the subsequent meta-analysis. Relevant data were pooled to assess the association between RDW and GC results, including overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS), as well as clinicopathological features. Results The meta-analysis and systemic review included data from 8 studies comprising 1,587 individuals diagnosed with GC. In this context, RDW refers to the coefficient of variation of RDW (RDW-CV). A high level of RDW-CV was significantly associated with older age [odds ratio (OR) =2.25; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.72-2.94; P<0.00001], larger tumor diameter (OR =1.90; 95% CI: 1.42-2.56; P<0.0001), and vascular invasion (OR =2.22; 95% CI: 1.10-4.49; P=0.03). After hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs were pooled, RDW-CV was found to be an independent prognostic factor of OS (HR =1.79; 95% CI: 1.21-2.66; I2=85%; P=0.004), DFS (HR =1.81; 95% CI: 1.37-2.39; I2=0%; P<0.0001), and CSS (HR =2.73; 95% CI: 1.36-5.49; I2=0%; P=0.005) in patients with GC. Conclusions The association between high levels of RDW-CV and poor survival in GC suggests that RDW-CV may be a viable prognostic indicator for patients with GC.

Abstract
PURPOSE The pathological, clinical, and therapeutic features of colorectal cancer (CRC) depend on its anatomical localization. We investigated possible associations between the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and CRC localization. METHODS Two-hundred eighty-eight consecutive patients with CRC were retrospectively studied. Demographic, clinical, pathological and laboratory data were retrieved from clinical records and reports. RESULTS Median RDW values were significantly higher in patients with right-sided CRC when compared to those with CRC in other localizations (16.2, IQR: 14.5-20.0 vs 13.8, IQR: 13.0-16.1, p < 0.0001). Anisocytosis was statistically associated to haemoglobin (Hb), mean haemoglobin concentration (MHC), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values in all the patient groups examined. A cut-off value of 14.3% was associated with right-sided localization with sensitivity and specificity of 76.3% and 64.2%, respectively (AUC 0.71). CONCLUSION Median RDW values were significantly higher in right-sided CRC when compared to other tumour locations, and may represent an additional marker for differential diagnosis.

Abstract
Various blood cell ratios exist which seem to have an impact on prognosis for resected gastric cancer patients. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the prognostic role of blood cell ratios in patients with gastric cancer undergoing surgery in a curative attempt. A systematic literature search in MEDLINE (via PubMed), CENTRAL, and Web of Science was performed. Information on survival and cut-off values from all studies investigating any blood cell ratio in resected gastric cancer patients were extracted. Prognostic significance and optimal cut-off values were calculated by meta-analyses and a summary of the receiver operating characteristic. From 2831 articles, 65 studies investigated six different blood cell ratios (prognostic nutritional index (PNI), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR)). There was a significant association for the PNI and NLR with overall survival and disease-free survival and for LMR and NLR with 5-year survival. The used cut-off values had high heterogeneity. The available literature is flawed by the use of different cut-off values hampering evidence-based patient treatment and counselling. This article provides optimal cut-off values recommendations for future research.

The Ratio of the Hemoglobin to Red Cell Distribution Width Combined with the Ratio of Platelets to Lymphocytes Can Predict the Survival of Patients with Gastric Cancer Liver Metastasis. Abstract
Background Hemoglobin/red cell distribution width (HR) and platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) ratios are considered effective prognostic markers in various cancers. We have proposed a new prognostic parameter: HR+PLR. The aim of this study is to explore the prognostic value of the HR+PLR scoring system in patients with gastric cancer liver metastasis. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 306 patients with gastric cancer liver metastases admitted to our hospital from 2007 to 2014. According to the size of HR value and PLR value, we will divide the patients into three groups, namely, HR+PLR: (1) 0 points: HR > 1.02 and PLR < 128; (2) 1 point: HR > 1.02 and PLR > 128 and HR < 1.02 and PLR < 128; and (3) 2 points: HR < 1.02 and PLR > 128. Results The HR+PLR score was statistically different from age (P = 0.049), T stage (P < 0.001), N stage (P = 0.017), number of liver metastases (P = 0.018), gastrectomy (P < 0.001), hepatectomy (P = 0.001), peritoneal metastasis (P = 0.012), prognostic nutritional index (PNI) (P = 0.028), and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P = 0.045). The HR+PLR scoring system has a higher area under the ROC curve (AUC value) than PNI, PLR, HR, and PLR (AUC = 0.798, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, gastrectomy (P = 0.001), hepatectomy (P < 0.001), chemotherapy (P = 0.014), and HR+PLR score (P < 0.001) were considered independent prognostic factors. Conclusion For patients with gastric cancer liver metastasis, the HR+PLR score is a simple, reliable, and economic prognostic marker.

Abstract
Background This retrospective study at a single center aimed to evaluate the role of the red blood cell distribution width (RDW)-to-platelet ratio and other laboratory indices associated with the severity of histological hepatic fibrosis on liver biopsy in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Material/Methods We retrospectively reviewed records from 2097 adult patients who had liver biopsies. Of these patients, data from 72 with AIH and 164 with drug-induced liver injury (DILI) with complete laboratory information and medical histories were included in the analysis. Results We found that compared with patients with DILI, patients with AIH had higher alkaline phosphatase, globulin, and total bile acid levels. Multivariate analyses of risk factors for AIH-associated advanced liver fibrosis in Chinese patients revealed an estimated adjusted odds ratio (AOR) (95% CI) of 1.609 (1.028–2.517) in patients with higher immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels. Patients with higher gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT)-to-platelet ratio (GPR) values had a significantly higher risk of serious liver fibrosis than patients with lower GPR values. Advanced fibrosis risk was higher in patients with higher RPR values than in patients with lower RPR values [AOR (95% CI): 25.507 (2.934–221.784)]. The result for area under the curve (0.821) analysis for lnRPR levels indicated this variable had high diagnostic performance for predicting advanced AIH-related fibrosis. Conclusions The degree of histological liver fibrosis in patients with AIH was significantly associated with an increased red blood cell distribution width-to-platelet ratio, GPR, and increased serum levels of IgA.

Abstract
Background: The prognostic value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in metastatic gastric cancer (mGC) treated with systemic chemotherapy is largely unknown, especially second-line chemotherapy. We retrospectively investigated the prognostic value of baseline NLR and MLR in the progression of mGC with systemic chemotherapy. Methods: Patients with mGC diagnosed by pathology from January 2010 to December 2018 were identified. Baseline NLR and MLR were collected before treatment. The time to progression during or after first-line therapy from diagnosis (PFS1), and during or after second-line chemotherapy (PFS2) were primary endpoint. Overall survival (OS) was calculated from diagnosis to the date of death or final follow-up. Results: 537 patients with first-line chemotherapy were included in the retrospective study. The cutoff values of NLR and MLR were 2.610 and 0.285, respectively. Pretreatment NLR and MLR were significantly independent prognostic factors for PFS1 (hazard ratio [HR]=1.597, 95% CI 1.261-2.022, P<0.001 and HR=1.574, 95% CI 1.239-1.999, P<0.001) and OS (HR=1.448, 95% CI 1.030-2.034, P=0.033 and HR=1.622, 95% CI 1.148-2.291, P=0.006). For 172 patients treated with second-line chemotherapy, the cutoff value of MLR was 0.355 and MLR maintained a significant association with PFS2 (HR=1.589, 95% CI 1.073-2.354, P=0.021) in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Elevated NLR and MLR were markedly related to the worse PFS1 and OS in mGC performed with first-line chemotherapy. In patients with second-line therapy, MLR was more closely connected to prognosis and was a significantly independent prognostic factor for PFS2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many publications showed red blood cell distribution width (RDW) might associate with the prognosis of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, however, the agreement has not been reached because of controversial results. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the prognostic value of RDW in GI cancers. METHODS Four common databases were comprehensively searched to look for relevant studies. The meta-analyses for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival were performed using hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI), and the meta-analyses for clinical parameters were conducted using odd ratio and 95% CI. RESULTS A total of 13 studies involving with 3,509 patients with GI cancers were included into this study. The results showed, compared to patients with low RDW, patients with high RDW tended to have shorter OS (HR = 1.75, 95%CI = 1.57-1.94, P < .01) and disease-free survival (HR = 1.67, 95%CI = 1.39-2.00, P < .01). High RDW was associated with larger tumor size (P < .01), worse differentiation (P = .02), deeper invasion (P < .01), earlier lymph node metastasis (P < .01), more advanced clinical stage (P < .01) and higher carcinoembryonic antigen level (P < .01) when compared to low RDW. CONCLUSION High RDW was significantly associated with worse prognosis of GI cancers, which could be regarded as a prognostic biomarker for GI cancers. More prospective studies with large sample size and long follow-up period should be carried out to determine the prognostic significance of RDW in GI cancers in future.

Abstract
Aims Predicting the prognosis of gastric cancer using tumour-node-metastasis (TNM) staging is difficult as patients with the same TNM stage exhibit different prognoses. Methods This study investigated the prognostic value of the preoperative fibrinogen/albumin ratio (FAR)-systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) score in resectable gastric cancer (rGC). Results Clinicopathological features of 231 rGC patients were analysed retrospectively. Patients were divided into three groups: FAR-SIRI score 2 (FAR ≥ 0.071 and SIRI ≥ 0.84), 1 (FAR < 0.071 and SIRI ≥ 0.84), and 0 (SIRI < 0.84). Higher FAR-SIRI scores were associated with larger tumours, poorer differentiation, and advanced TNM stage (P < 0.05). Compared to those with FAR-SIRI scores of 0, patients with scores of 2 had poorer overall survival (OS). The FAR-SIRI score was an independent prognostic factor for OS in rGC. Conclusion The present data demonstrated that FAR-SIRI scores predicted radical gastric cancer surgical outcomes and may serve as a blood marker for identifying high-risk patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the association between red cell distribution width-to-platelet ratio (RPR) and hepatic fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS The 388 subjects fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Red cell distribution, platelet, and other clinical and laboratory parameters were measured. RESULTS NAFLD patients with advanced fibrosis had significantly higher RPR than those without fibrosis (P < .001). Spearman correlation analysis showed that RPR were significantly correlated with age, sex, creatinine, hemoglobin, white blood cell, and advanced fibrosis (all with P < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that RPR was an independent factor predicting advanced fibrosis (fibrosis-4 calculator ≥1.3) in NAFLD patients (OR: 5.718, 95%CI: 3.326-9.830, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that RPR were significantly associated with advanced fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW), which measures the range of variation of red blood cell volume, has been explored as a prognostic factor in multiple types of cancer. However, the role of RDW in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with poor outcomes, remains to be determined. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic role of RDW in MCL. We found that 21 of 76 MCL patients (27.6%) had an abnormally elevated RDW (>15.7%). Abnormally elevated RDW was significantly associated with presence of B symptoms (P = 0.0020), elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (P = 0.0010), higher leukocyte count (P = 0.0345), higher simplified Mantle Cell International Prognostic Index (sMIPI) (P = 0.0194), and lower level of hemoglobin (Hb) (P < 0.0001). It was marginally associated with increased C-reactive protein (P = 0.0862). RDW was significantly correlated with Hb level (r2 = 0.42) and LDH level (r2 = 0.19). 15.8% was determined as the best cutoff of RDW in predicting the survival outcome by the X-tile software. Survival analysis revealed that high RDW (>15.8%) predicted shorter progression-free survival (PFS) (hazards ratio [HR]: 3.14; P = 0.0005) and shorter overall survival (OS) (HR: 4.04; P < 0.0001). High RDW independently predicted both shorter PFS (P = 0.0493) and OS (P = 0.0118). RDW also improved the prognostic stratification based on sMIPI. In conclusion, our study identified RDW as a novel prognostic factor of clinical feasibility in the prognostication of MCL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been reported to reflect the inflammation and nutrition status and predict prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) antibody. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between RDW and prognosis of NSCLC patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS We collected retrospective data on consecutive NSCLC patients treated with anti-PD-1 antibody from December 2015 to April 2018 at the Kobe University Hospital, Japan. RESULTS Forty-seven patients were treated. Patients with RDW ≥16% had a significantly shorter OS (p=0.010) compared to those with RDW <16%. In multivariate analysis, RDW ≥16% was an independent factor predicting poor prognosis (p=0.019). CONCLUSION Pre-treatment RDW ≥16% is an indicator of poor prognosis. RDW is an inexpensive, convenient, and routinely available marker of prognosis.

Abstract
Science is still unable to develop a specific strategy for predicting breast cancer in humans. Several attempts are done to obtain the best and closest prognostic predictive biomarkers for breast cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of novel ratios calculated between the blood indices with CA15.3, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase as prognostic biomarkers in breast cancer. This study was conducted on two groups (Breast cancer Patients group in comparison to a control group who has no tumor family history). All the volunteers are subjected to the routine analysis included liver and kidney function tests, complete blood count with blood indices, tumor markers (CA15.3) assessment, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase analysis. Thirty different ratios were calculated in the present research between blood indices and three inexpensive serum biomarkers; CA15.3, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase. Fifteen ratios of them were significant in breast cancer group than the control group. Three ratios (PDW/lymphocytes, MPV/lymphocytes, and ALP/RDW) of them gave a sensitivity of 100% with high specificity as indicators for breast cancer incidence. The correlation between significant ratios was very interesting. The more interesting was in the results of subgroup analysis which showed that the ALP/RDW ratio is more specific for pre-menopause while PDW/lymphocytes ratio is more specific for post-menopause. The ratios PDW/lymphocytes, MPV/lymphocytes, and ALP/RDW can be used as prognostic biomarkers in breast cancer patients. The interesting advantage in the results depends on the availability of these indicators in routine blood analysis and will not increase the cost of the diagnostic plan.
