Abstract
In the present study, we hypothesised that Trichosanthes kirilowii seed protein isolate (TPI) obtained by different extraction methods have distinct structure, functional attributes and volatile profiles. Alkaline-extracted isolate (AE-TPI) exhibited lower protein content and a darker colour than the other two isolates because more polyphenols and pigments were coextracted. Salt-extracted isolate (SE-TPI) and AE-TPI had higher in vitro protein digestibility than reverse micelle-extracted isolate (RME-TPI) due to higher degrees of denaturation, which enabled them to be more susceptible to proteolysis. The SE-TPI gel resulted in a stronger gel network and greater hardness than the other two isolate gels. In the volatile profile, SE-TPI (22) yielded the largest number of volatile compounds, followed by AE-TPI (20) and RME-TPI (15). The current results indicated that the structure, functional properties and volatile profiles of TPI are largely influenced by the extraction technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the safety of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC).
AIM To evaluate the safety of ERAS in elderly patients with GC.
METHODS The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were used to search for eligible studies from inception to April 1, 2023. The mean difference (MD), odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were pooled for analysis. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale scores. We used Stata (V.16.0) software for data analysis.
RESULTS This study consists of six studies involving 878 elderly patients. By analyzing the clinical outcomes, we found that the ERAS group had shorter postoperative hospital stays (MD = -0.51, I2 = 0.00%, 95%CI = -0.72 to -0.30, P = 0.00); earlier times to first flatus (defecation; MD = -0.30, I² = 0.00%, 95%CI = -0.55 to -0.06, P = 0.02); less intestinal obstruction (OR = 3.24, I2 = 0.00%, 95%CI = 1.07 to 9.78, P = 0.04); less nausea and vomiting (OR = 4.07, I2 = 0.00%, 95%CI = 1.29 to 12.84, P = 0.02); and less gastric retention (OR = 5.69, I2 = 2.46%, 95%CI = 2.00 to 16.20, P = 0.00). Our results showed that the conventional group had a greater mortality rate than the ERAS group (OR = 0.24, I2 = 0.00%, 95%CI = 0.07 to 0.84, P = 0.03). However, there was no statistically significant difference in major complications between the ERAS group and the conventional group (OR = 0.67, I2 = 0.00%, 95%CI = 0.38 to 1.18, P = 0.16).
CONCLUSION Compared to those with conventional recovery, elderly GC patients who received the ERAS protocol after surgery had a lower risk of mortality.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the structural and functional attributes of Chinese yam starches obtained via different domestic cooking methods. Cooking changed the crystalline type from the C type to the CB type, and disrupted the short- and long-range molecular order of Chinese yam starch. The average chain length of amylopectin in BOS (boiling starch) was the smallest at 22.78, while RWS had the longest average chain length, reaching 24.24. These alterations in molecular structure resulted in variations in functional properties such as solubility, swelling power (SP), pasting characteristics, and rheological properties. Among these alterations, boiling was the most effective method for increasing the water-binding capacity and SP of starch. Specifically, its water holding capacity was 2.12 times that of RWS. In vitro digestion experiments indicated that BOS has a higher digestion rate (k = 0.0272 min-1) and lower RDS (rapidly digestible starch), which may be related to its amylopectin chain length distribution. This study can guide us to utilize yam starch through suitable cooking methods, which is relevant for the processing and application of Chinese yam starch.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between remission of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and radical surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Methods: From January 2014 to December 2021, data of patients with concurrent CRC and NAFLD who underwent radical surgery in a single-center hospital were retrospectively collected. NAFLD was defined as a mean computed tomography (CT) liver attenuation value of <40 Hounsfield units (HUs). Comparison of preoperative and 1-year postoperative CT images was performed to evaluate the change of NAFLD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictive factors for NAFLD remission. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between the remission group and no remission group. Results: In this study, a total of 55 eligible patients were included. The remission group had 33 (60.0%) patients and the no remission group had 22 (40.0%) patients. The mean preoperative weight was 66.1 ± 9.9 kg. The mean preoperative body mass index (BMI) was 25.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2. We found that the average weight was significantly decreased (P < 0.01), average BMI was significantly decreased (P < 0.01), and HU score was significantly increased (P < 0.01). By comparing baseline characteristics between the remission group and no remission group, we found that the remission group exhibited larger tumor sizes (P = 0.036) than the no remission group. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that weight change was a predictor for NAFLD (odds ratio = 0.764, 95% confidence interval = 0.618-0.944, P = 0.013). We did not find any statistically significant differences in OS (P = 0.182) or DFS (P = 0.248) between the remission group and no remission group. Conclusions: The NAFLD remission rate reached 60.0% for CRC patients 1 year after radical surgery. In addition, we found that weight change was a predictor of NAFLD remission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that low hematocrit levels indicate poor survival in patients with ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, the prognostic value of hematocrit for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients has not been determined. The prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) for CRC patients was controversial. AIM To investigate the impact of RDW and hematocrit on the short-term outcomes and long-term prognosis of CRC patients who underwent radical surgery. METHODS Patients who were diagnosed with CRC and underwent radical CRC resection between January 2011 and January 2020 at a single clinical center were included. The short-term outcomes, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared among the different groups. Cox analysis was also conducted to identify independent risk factors for OS and DFS. RESULTS There were 4258 CRC patients who underwent radical surgery included in our study. A total of 1573 patients were in the lower RDW group and 2685 patients were in the higher RDW group. There were 2166 and 2092 patients in the higher hematocrit group and lower hematocrit group, respectively. Patients in the higher RDW group had more intraoperative blood loss (P < 0.01) and more overall complications (P < 0.01) than did those in the lower RDW group. Similarly, patients in the lower hematocrit group had more intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.012), longer hospital stay (P = 0.016) and overall complications (P < 0.01) than did those in the higher hematocrit group. The higher RDW group had a worse OS and DFS than did the lower RDW group for tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage I (OS, P < 0.05; DFS, P = 0.001) and stage II (OS, P = 0.004; DFS, P = 0.01) than the lower RDW group; the lower hematocrit group had worse OS and DFS for TNM stage II (OS, P < 0.05; DFS, P = 0.001) and stage III (OS, P = 0.001; DFS, P = 0.001) than did the higher hematocrit group. Preoperative hematocrit was an independent risk factor for OS [P = 0.017, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.256, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.041-1.515] and DFS (P = 0.035, HR = 1.194, 95%CI: 1.013-1.408). CONCLUSION A higher preoperative RDW and lower hematocrit were associated with more postoperative complications. However, only hematocrit was an independent risk factor for OS and DFS in CRC patients who underwent radical surgery, while RDW was not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ostomy is a common surgery usually performed to protect patients from clinical symptoms caused by distal anastomotic leakage after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery and perforation or to relieve intestinal obstruction. AIM To analyze the complications after transverse colostomy closure. METHODS Patients who underwent transverse colostomy closure from Jan 2015 to Jan 2022 were retrospectively enrolled in a single clinical center. The differences between the complication group and the no complication group were compared. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to find independent factors for overall complications or incision infection. RESULTS A total of 102 patients who underwent transverse colostomy closure were enrolled in the current study. Seventy (68.6%) patients underwent transverse colostomy because of CRC related causes. Postoperative complications occurred in 30 (29.4%) patients and the most frequent complication occurring after transverse colostomy closure was incision infection (46.7%). The complication group had longer hospital stays (P < 0.01). However, no potential risk factors were identified for overall complications and incision infection. CONCLUSION The most frequent complication occurring after transverse colostomy closure surgery in our center was incision infection. The operation time, interval from transverse colostomy to reversal, and method of anastomosis might have no impact on the postoperative complications. Surgeons should pay more attention to aseptic techniques.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to establish a validated nomogram to predict risk factors for major post-operative complications in patients with rectal cancer (RC) by analyzing the factors contributing to major post-operative complications in RC patients. Methods We retrospectively collected baseline and surgical information on patients who underwent RC surgery between December 2012 and December 2022 at a single-center teaching hospital. The entire cohort was randomly divided into two subsets (60% of the data for development, 40% for validation). Independent risk factors for major post-operative complications were identified using multivariate logistic regression analyses, and predictive models were developed. Area under the curve (AUC) was calculated using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) to assess predictive probability, calibration curves were plotted to compare the predicted probability of the nomogram with the actual probability, and the clinical efficacy of the nomogram was assessed using decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Our study included 3151 patients who underwent radical surgery for RC, including 1892 in the development set and 1259 in the validation set. Forty (2.1%) patients in the development set and 26 (2.1%) patients in the validation set experienced major post-operative complications. Through multivariate logistic regression analysis, age (p<0.01, OR=1.044, 95% CI=1.016-1.074), pre-operative albumin (p<0.01, OR=0.913, 95% CI=0.866-0.964), and open surgery (p<0.01, OR=2.461, 95% CI=1.284-4.761) were identified as independent risk factors for major post-operative complications in RC, and a nomogram prediction model was established. The AUC of the ROC plot for the development set was 0.7161 (95% Cl=0.6397-0.7924), and the AUC of the ROC plot for the validation set was 0.7191 (95% CI=0.6182-0.8199). The predicted probabilities in the calibration curves were highly consistent with the actual probabilities, which indicated that the prediction model had good predictive ability. The DCA also confirmed the good clinical performance of the nomogram. Conclusion In this study, a validated nomogram containing three predictors was created to identify risk factors for major complications after radical RC surgery. Due to its accuracy and convenience, it could contribute to personalized management of patients in the perioperative period.

Abstract
The specific structure of Polygonatum kingianum Coll. et Hemsl polysaccharide (PKP) has been rarely reported. In this study, an inulin-type fructan PKP-1, was extracted and purified from Polygonatum kingianum Coll. et Hemsl, and its structural characteristics and antioxidants activity were evaluated. The molecular weights of PKP-1 was determined to be 4.802 kDa. Monosaccharide composition analysis evidenced that PKP-1 was composed of galactose, glucose and fructose in a molar ratio of 0.8 %:7.2 %:92.0 %. Glycosidic linkage and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis revealed that PKP-1 exhibited a primary sugar residue linkage of →1-β-d-Fruf-2→2,6-β-d-Fruf-1→, where β-d-Fruf-2→ acts as the side chain and links to the C-6 position of →2,6-β-d-Fruf-1→. In vitro antioxidant activity assays demonstrated that PKP-1 enhanced the mitigation of hepatic oxidative stress in HepG2 cells induced by free fatty acids. This effect was marked by increased enzymatic activities of superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), along with elevated glutathione (GSH) levels. These findings indicate that PKP-1 could be used as a potential natural antioxidant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the association between oral health and the risk of gastric cancer (GC) has gradually attracted increased interest. However, in terms of GC incidence, the association between oral health and GC incidence remains controversial. Periodontitis is reported to increase the risk of GC. However, some studies have shown that periodontitis has no effect on the risk of GC. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess whether there is a relationship between oral health and the risk of GC. AIM To assess whether there was a relationship between oral health and the risk of GC. METHODS Five databases were searched to find eligible studies from inception to April 10, 2023. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale score was used to assess the quality of included studies. The quality of cohort studies and case-control studies were evaluated separately in this study. Incidence of GC were described by odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Funnel plot was used to represent the publication bias of included studies. We performed the data analysis by StataSE 16. RESULTS A total of 1431677 patients from twelve included studies were enrolled for data analysis in this study. According to our analysis, we found that the poor oral health was associated with higher risk of GC (OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.02-1.29; I2 = 59.47%, P = 0.00 < 0.01). Moreover, after subgroup analysis, the outcomes showed that whether tooth loss (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 0.94-1.29; I2 = 6.01%, P > 0.01), gingivitis (OR = 1.19, 95%CI: 0.71-1.67; I2 = 0.00%, P > 0.01), dentures (OR = 1.27, 95%CI: 0.63-1.19; I2 = 68.79%, P > 0.01), or tooth brushing (OR = 1.25, 95%CI: 0.78-1.71; I2 = 88.87%, P > 0.01) had no influence on the risk of GC. However, patients with periodontitis (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.04-1.23; I2 = 0.00%, P < 0.01) had a higher risk of GC. CONCLUSION Patients with poor oral health, especially periodontitis, had a higher risk of GC. Patients should be concerned about their oral health. Improving oral health might reduce the risk of GC.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study is to analyze whether surgical starting time affects the short-term outcomes of elective colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. We retrospectively collected CRC patients who underwent elective surgery from Jan 2008 to Jan 2021 in a single clinical center. The effect of surgical starting time (morning surgery vs afternoon surgery, day surgery vs night surgery) on elective CRC surgery was analyzed using propensity score matching (PSM). A total of 6783 patients were included in the current study. There were 5751 patients in day surgery group and 1032 patients in night surgery group, and there were 2920 patients in morning surgery group and 2831 patients in afternoon surgery group. After 1:1 ratio PSM, there were no significant difference in terms of the baseline information (P > .05). Day surgery group had longer operation time (P = .000) and longer hospital stay (P = .029) than night surgery group after PSM. Morning surgery group had longer operation time than afternoon surgery group before PSM (P = .000) and after PSM (P = .000). Univariate and multivariate analysis of the total of 6783 patients were conducted to find predictors of complications, and found that night surgery was a predictor of major complications (P = .002, OR = 1.763, 95% CI = 1.222-2.543) but not a predictor of overall complications (P = .250, OR = 1.096, 95% CI = 0.938-1.282). Night surgery is a predictor of major complications after elective CRC surgery, therefore, surgeons should be careful when operating at night.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Porcupine quills, a by-product of porcupine pork, are rich in keratin, which is an excellent source of bioactive peptides. The objective of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism of anti-proliferation effect of porcupine quills keratin peptides (PQKPs) on MCF-7 cells. RESULTS Results showed that PQKPs induced MCF-7 cells apoptosis by significantly decreasing the secretion level of anti-apoptosis protein Bcl-2 and increasing the secretion levels of pro-apoptosis proteins Bax, cytochrome c, caspase 9, caspase 3 and PARP. PQKPs also arrested the cell cycle at G0/G1 phase via remarkably reducing the protein levels of CDK4 and enhancing the protein levels of p53 and p21. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analysis identified nine peptides with molecular weights less than 1000 Da in PQKPs. Molecular docking results showed that TPGPPT and KGPAC identified from PQKPs could bind with p53 mutant and Bcl-2 protein by conventional hydrogen bonds, carbon hydrogen bonds and van der Waals force. Furthermore, the anti-proliferation impact of synthesized peptides (TPGPPT and KGPAC) was shown in MCF-7 cells. CONCLUSION These findings indicated that PQKPs suppressed the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells by triggering apoptosis and G0/G1 cell cycle arrest. Moreover, the outcome of this study will bring fresh insights into the production and application of animal byproducts. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether the amount of intraoperative blood loss (IBL) affects the complications and prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library databases were used to search for eligible studies from inception to November 30, 2020. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (Cls) were pooled up. The overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared between the larger IBL group and the smaller IBL group. The present study was performed with RevMan 5.3 (The Cochrane Collaboration). A total of seven studies involving 1,540 patients with CRC were included in the present study. The smaller IBL group had a higher rate of OS (HR=1.45, 95% CI=1.17 to 1.8, P=0.0007) and a higher rate of DFS (HR=1.76, 95% CI=1.40 to 2.21, P<0.00001). Furthermore, the larger IBL group had a higher rate of postoperative complications than the smaller IBL group (odds ratio=2.06, 95% CI=1.72 to 2.15, P<0.00001). In conclusion, a smaller IBL was associated with better OS and DFS, and a lower risk of postoperative complications compared with a larger IBL in patients with CRC, suggesting that surgeons should pay more attention during perioperative management and surgical operation to reduce IBL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) are the fifth and third most common cancer worldwide, respectively. Nowadays, GC is reported to have a potential predictive value for CRC, especially for advanced CRC. AIM To evaluate the necessity of colonoscopy for gastric neoplasm (GN) patients. METHODS Four databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Ovid, were used to perform the search strategy on May 2, 2023. The prevalence of colorectal neoplasms (CRN) and baseline characteristics were compared between the neoplasm group and the control group. Continuous variables are expressed as the mean difference and standard deviation. Relationships of categorical variables in the two groups are expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). Subgroup analysis according to different kinds of GNs was conducted for more in-depth analysis. The results of this study are represented by forest plots. Publication bias was evaluated by a funnel plot. All data analyses were performed by STATA SE 16.0 software. RESULTS A total of 3018 patients with GNs and 3905 healthy controls (age and sex matched) were enrolled for analysis. After comparing the prevalence of CRNs between the two groups, CRNs were detected significantly more frequently in GN patients than in controls (OR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.28 to 2.23, I2 = 85.12%, P = 0.00), especially in patients with GC (OR =1.80, 95%CI = 1.49 to 2.18, I2 = 25.55%, P < 0.1). Moreover, other risk factors including age (OR = 1.08, 95%CI = 1.00 to 1.17, I2 = 90.13%, P = 0.00) and male sex (OR = 2.31, 95%CI = 1.26 to 4.22, I2 = 87.35%, P = 0.00), were related to the prevalence of CRNs. For patients in the GN group, body mass index (BMI, OR = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.80 to 0.98, I2 = 0.00%, P = 0.92) and smoking (OR = 1.03, 95%CI = 1.01 to 1.05, I2 = 0.00%, P = 0.57) were protective and risk factors for CRNs, respectively. CONCLUSION Patients are recommended to undergo colonoscopy when diagnosed with GNs, especially GC patients with a low BMI and a history of smoking.

Abstract
In China, Jiang Fructus aurantii (JFA) has attracted increasing interest as a famous traditional herbal medicine and valuable economic food for its valuable medicinal and industrial properties. In the current work, contrasted with conventional extraction techniques, natural flavonoids from JFA (naringin and neohesperidin) were extracted with remarkable effectiveness utilizing a sustainable deep eutectic solvents combined ultrasonic-assisted extraction (DESs-UAE) protocol. The optimal extraction capacity can be achieved by mixing 30 % water with a molar ratio of 1:3 for choline chloride and ethylene glycol, as opposed to the classical extraction solvents of 95 % ethanol, methanol, and water. Moreover, the DESs-UAE extraction programs were also systematically optimized employing Box-Behnken design (BBD) trials, and the eventual findings suggested that the best parameters were a 27 % water content in DES, a 16 mL/g liquid-solid ratio, a 72 min extraction time, and a 62 °C extraction temperature, along with the corresponding greatest contents of NAR (48.18 mg/g) and NEO (34.50 mg/g), respectively. Notably, by comparison with the pre-optimization data, the optimized DES extraction efficiency of flavonoids is markedly higher. Thereafter, the characterization of the solvents before and after extraction, as well as the differences between the four extraction solvent extracts, were compared using the FT-IR analyses. Furthermore, SEM results suggested that the penetration and erosion abilities of the plant cell wall of DES-1 were stronger than those of the other three traditional solvents, thus allowing more release of flavonoid compounds. In conclusion, the present research develops a straightforward, sustainable, and exceedingly efficient approach for the extraction of bioactive flavonoids from JFA, which has the potential to facilitate the efficient acquisition of active ingredients from TCM.

Abstract
Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with ultra-high energy density (2600 W h kg-1 ) and readily available raw materials are emerging as a potential alternative device with low cost for lithium-ion batteries. However, the insulation of sulfur and the unavoidable shuttle effect leads to slow reaction kinetics of LSBs, which in turn cause various roadblocks including poor rate capability, inferior cycling stability, and low coulombic efficiency. The most effective way to solve the issues mentioned above is to rationally design and control the synthesis of the cathode host for LSBs. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with good electrical conductivity and dual adsorption-conversion capabilities for polysulfide (PS) are regarded as promising cathode hosts for new-generation LSBs. In this review, the main obstacles to commercializing the LSBs and the development processes of their cathode host are first elaborated. Then, the sulfur fixation principles, and synthesis methods of the TMPs are briefly summarized and the recent progress of TMPs in LSBs is reviewed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the future research directions of LSBs is provided.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive value of advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) for short-term outcomes and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent radical surgery. METHODS CRC patients who underwent radical resection were included from Jan 2011 to Jan 2020 in our single clinical centre. Short-term outcomes, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared in different groups. Cox analysis was conducted to identify independent risk factors for OS and DFS. RESULTS A total of 4010 patients who underwent radical CRC surgery were enrolled in the current study. As a result, the low ALI group had longer operation time (p = 0.02), more intra-operative blood loss (p < 0.01), longer postoperative hospital stay (p < 0.01), and more overall complications (p < 0.01). Moreover, ALI (p < 0.01, OR = 0.679, 95% CI = 0.578-0.798) was an independent risk factor for overall complications. As for survival, the low ALI group had worse OS in all TNM stages (p < 0.01), stage II (p < 0.01) and stage III (p < 0.01). Similarly, the low ALI group had worse DFS in all TNM stages (p < 0.01), stage II (p < 0.01), and stage III (p < 0.01). In Cox analysis, ALI was an independent risk factors for OS (p < 0.01, HR = 0.707, 95% CI = 0.589-0.849) and DFS (p < 0.01, HR = 0.732, 95% CI = 0.622-0.861). CONCLUSION Lower ALI was associated with more postoperative complications, worse OS, and DFS for CRC patients who underwent radical surgery. Furthermore, ALI was an independent risk factor for overall complications, OS, and DFS. Surgeons should pay close attention to patients with low ALI before surgery and make clinical strategies cautiously.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to investigate whether previous abdominal surgery (PAS) affected stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent radical resection. METHODS Stage I-III CRC patients who received surgery at a single clinical center from Jan 2014 to Dec 2022 were retrospectively included in this study. Baseline characteristics and short-term outcomes were compared between the PAS group and the non-PAS group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to find risk factors for overall complications and major complications. A 1:1 ratio propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimize the selection bias between the two groups. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 22.0) software. RESULTS A total of 5895 stage I-III CRC patients were included according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The PAS group had 1336 (22.7%) patients, and the non-PAS group had 4559 (77.3%) patients. After the PSM, there were 1335 patients in each group, and no significant difference was found in all baseline characteristics between the two groups (P > 0.05). After comparing the short-term outcomes, the PAS group had a longer operation time (before PSM, P < 0.01; after PSM, P < 0.01) and more overall complications (before PSM, P = 0.027; after PSM, P = 0.022) whether before or after PSM. In univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, PAS was an independent risk factor for overall complications (univariate analysis, P = 0.022; multivariate analysis, P = 0.029) but not for major complications (univariate analysis, P = 0.688). CONCLUSION Stage I-III CRC patients with PAS might experience longer operation time and have a higher risk of postoperative overall complications. However, it did not appear to significantly affect the major complications. Surgeons should take steps to improve surgical outcomes for patients with PAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sacha inchi is known for its high protein content and medicinal properties. Bioactive peptides have been reported to have therapeutic potential in various human diseases. However, there is a lack of research evaluating the pharmacological value of peptides derived from Sacha inchi. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the anti-hepatoma effect of Sacha inchi peptides (SPs) and their underlying mechanism. RESULTS The study found that treatment with SPs significantly reduced the proliferation of HepG2 cells by inducing apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase. SPs also induced HepG2 cell apoptosis by increasing the levels of proteins such as Bax, Caspase-3 and P53. The study identified nine novel peptides in SPs, of which LLEPDVR, ALVEKAKAS and TGDGSLRPY exhibited higher cell proliferative inhibition rates compared to other peptides. CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that Sacha inchi peptides have potential pharmacological effects in the treatment of liver cancer. SPs effectively suppress the cell cycle and facilitate cell apoptosis, indicating their anti-hepatoma effect. The novel peptides identified in SPs may have therapeutic value for liver cancer treatment. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Background and Aim The aim of this study was to assess the quality and content of videos on Douyin and TikTok for their educational role on early screening of rectal cancer (RC). Methods We conducted a search for videos related to RC on the Douyin and TikTok applications on 20 April 2023. The search was conducted in Chinese on Douyin and in English and Japanese on TikTok. A sample of the first 100 videos recommended by the software was selected for each language group. The content of the videos was evaluated using a content scorecard, while the quality of the videos was assessed using DISCERN. Subsequently, we conducted two partial correlations: one between the DISCERN score and the number of likes, and another between the video content score and the number of likes. Results This study encompassed a total of 89 Chinese, 54 English, and 51 Japanese videos. After selection, 78 Chinese, 38 English, and 25 Japanese videos were identified to contain content related to early screening for RC, prompting further quality assessment. Notably, videos in the Chinese language showed the highest DISCERN score (P < 0.05). In terms of partial correlation analysis, it was observed that both the content score and DISCERN score did not show a significant correlation with the number of likes (P > 0.05). Conclusion In terms of quality score and content score, the Chinese videos on Douyin show superiority over the English and Japanese videos on TikTok. However, there is potential for improving the overall appeal of the Chinese videos.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to compare the outcomes of patients with gastric cancer (GC) between the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) group and the non-T2DM group. The PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to March 8, 2022, to identify propensity score matching (PSM) studies that analyzed the effect of T2DM on the outcomes of patients with GC. Total complications, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were compared between the T2DM group and the non-T2DM group. A total of four PSM studies with 834 patients were included in the current study. There were 311 and 523 patients in the T2DM group and the non-T2DM group, respectively. Baseline characteristics of the two groups were adjusted with PSM in all the four studies, however, no significant difference was found in baseline characteristics (P>0.05). DFS was significantly worse in the T2DM group compared with that in the non-T2DM group [hazard ratio (HR), 1.45; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.90; P=0.007)]. However, after pooling up the data, there was no significant difference between the T2DM group and the non-T2DM group in terms of OS (HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 0.92-2.16; P=0.11), CSS (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 0.92-1.81; P=0.14) and total complications (odds ratio, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.64-1.60; P=0.95). Patients with GC and T2DM are associated with poor DFS. However, there were no significant differences between the T2DM group and the non-T2DM group in terms of OS, CSS and total complications.

Abstract
PURPOSE This present study aims to explore the influence of metformin and postoperative insulin pump use on colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who received surgery in terms of short-term and long-term outcomes. METHODS 613 CRC patients who had comorbid T2DM and received surgery at a single clinical center from Jan, 2011 to Dec, 2021 were included in this study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to find predictive factors for overall complications and major complications. Cox regression analyses was used to find prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 22.0) software. The Kaplan-Meier curve was used to show the OS and DFS between the insulin pump group and the no insulin pump group. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis reported that lower body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.01, OR = 0.922, 95% CI = 0.870-0.977) and metformin use (p = 0.03, OR = 0.643, 95% CI = 0.431-0.959) were independent protective factors for overall complications, and insulin pump after surgery (p < 0.01, OR = 3.991, 95% CI = 2.434-6.544) was an independent risk factor for overall complications. As for major complications, metformin use (p = 0.042, OR = 0.274, 95% CI = 0.079-0.956) and insulin pump after surgery (p = 0.03, OR = 2.892, 95% CI = 1.107-7.552) remained independent protective factors and independent risk factors, respectively. Moreover, in Cox regression analyses, age (OS: p < 0.01, HR = 1.032, 95% CI = 1.008-1.057; DFS: p < 0.01, HR = 1.030, 95% CI = 1.008-1.052), tumor stage (OS: p < 0.01, HR = 1.709, 95% CI = 1.244-2.346; DFS: p < 0.01, HR = 1.696, 95% CI = 1.276-2.254), and Insulin pump after surgery (OS: p < 0.01, HR = 2.923, 95% CI = 1.887-4.527; DFS: p < 0.01, HR = 2.671, 95% CI = 1.779-4.009) were independent prognostic factors for both OS and DFS. After comparing the OS and DFS between the insulin pump group and the no insulin pump group, patients who received postoperative insulin pump had worse OS and DFS in all tumor node metastasis (TNM) stages (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Diabetic CRC patients who used metformin had a lower risk of postoperative complications. However, there was no difference from patients not using metformin in terms of survival. Furthermore, patients receiving postoperative insulin pump had more postoperative complications and worse survival in all TNM stages.

Abstract

MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for eligible studies from inception to March 31, 2023. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (Cl) were also calculated. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. This study was performed using the Stata (V.16.0) software. RESULTS A total of 29 studies involving 17,228 patients were included in this study. In terms of postoperative outcomes, the laparoscopic group had a shorter postoperative hospital stay (MD = -0.29, 95%CI = -0.44 to -0.13, P = 0.00), less blood loss (MD = -0.45, 95%CI = -0.82 to -0.08, P = 0.02), fewer wound infection (OR = 0.20, 95%CI = 0.17 to 0.24, P = 0.00), fewer pneumonia (OR = 0.59, 95%CI = 0.41 to 0.87, P = 0.01), fewer respiratory complications (OR = 0.26, 95%CI = 0.13 to 0.55, P = 0.00) and lower postoperative morbidity (OR = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.33 to 0.78, P = 0.00). The laparoscopic group had a lower mortality rate (OR = 0.36, 95%CI = 0.27 to 0.49, P = 0.00) than the open group. We also found that the laparoscopic group had a higher overall complication rate than the open group (OR = 0.45, 95%CI = 0.34 to 0.60, P = 0.00). CONCLUSION Laparoscopic repair was associated with a lower risk of mortality than open repair in patients with PPU. Laparoscopic repair may be a better option in patients with PPU.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) combined with hyperuricemia remitted 1 year after CRC surgery. CRC patients combined with hyperuricemia who underwent radical surgery were included from a single clinical center from Jan 2016 to Dec 2021. Baseline characteristics was compared between the remission group and the non-remission group. Multivariate logistic regression was used to find the possible predictive factors of hyperuricemia remission. A total of 91 patients were included for data analysis, retrospectively. There were 34 (37.4%) patients in the remission group and 57 (62.6%) patients in the non-remission group. The mean preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI) were 61.2 ± 10.7 (kg) and 24.1 ± 3.3 (kg/m2). 21 (23.1%) patients had a history of drinking. We found that the weight and BMI were not significantly different before and 1 year after CRC surgery (P > 0.05). In contrast, uric acid values were significantly decreased (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the outcomes showed there were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics between the remission and non-remission groups (P > 0.05). According to multivariate logistic regression, we found that the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission (OR = 0.046, 95% CI 0.005-0.475, P = 0.010). CRC patients with hyperuricemia had a 37.4% remission from hyperuricemia 1 year after CRC surgery. Tumor location, tumor stage, and tumor size did not predict the remission of hyperuricemia. Notably, the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission.

Abstract
Our study aims to investigate whether preoperative red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has a prognostic value for patients after gastric cancer (GC) surgery. We searched articles in 3 databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library on May 16th, 2022. The prognostic indicators included overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RevMan 5.3 (The Cochrane Collaboration, London, United Kingdom) and Stata V16.0 were used for statistical analysis. The Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Interventions tool was used to assess risk of bias of the included studies. Ten articles involving 2740 patients were included. RDW was a prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio = 1.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-2.37, P < .01) and DFS (hazard ratio = 1.99, I2 = 26%, 95% CI = 1.53-2.58, P < .01) for GC patients. Meanwhile, there were some differences between the high RDW group and the low RDW group. We found more patients older than 60 years old (OR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.08-6.13, P = .03), larger tumor diameter (OR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.33-2.85, P < .01) and later T stage (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.07-3.42, P = .03) in the high RDW group than the low RDW group. No statistic difference was found in gender, N stage, tumor node metastasis stage, vascular invasion, differentiation, and adjuvant therapy between the 2 groups (P > .05). RDW was an independent prognostic factor for both OS and DFS of GC patients. High RDW level were strongly associated with poor survival.

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) and open gastrectomy (OG) on clinical outcomes in patients with remnant gastric cancer (RGC). Materials and Methods: The databases of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were used to search for eligible studies from inception to April 1st, 2023. Hazard ratios (HRs), mean difference (MD), odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled up to analyze. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) scores were used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. This study was performed with RevMan 5.3 (The Cochrane Collaboration, London, United Kingdom) software. Results: A total of 11 studies involving 535 RGC patients were included in this study. In terms of basic information, we found that the OG group had a higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade (≥2) (OR = 0.24, I2 = 54%, 95% CI = 0.08-0.71, P = .01) than the LG group. In terms of postoperative outcomes, we found that the LG group had longer operative time (MD = 33.95, I2 = 58%, 95% CI = 15.05-52.85, P < .01), shorter postoperative hospital stay (MD = 5.08, I2 = 84%, 95% CI = -9.74 to -0.42, P = .03), shorter length of incision (MD = -7.15, I2 = 94%, 95% CI = -10.99 to -3.31, P < .01), earlier food intake (MD = -3.09, I2 = 76%, 95% CI = -4.84 to -1.35, P < .01), and earlier time to first flatus (MD = -0.84, I2 = 0%, 95% CI = -1.09 to -0.59, P < .01). We found that there was no statistically significant difference in overall survival (HR = 0.96, I2 = 0%, 95% CI = 0.48-1.93, P = .92) between the LG group and the OG group. Conclusion: LG for RGC patients had longer surgical time, shorter postoperative hospital stay, shorter length of incision, earlier food intake, and earlier time to first flatus.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current pooling up analysis aimed to evaluate whether aortic calcification (AC) was a potential risk factor for anastomotic leakage (AL) after colorectal surgery. METHODS In this study, we searched studies in three databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library on April 20, 2022. In order to investigate the association between AC and AL, the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of AC were pooled up. Our study was performed with RevMan 5.3 according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. RESULTS We finally enrolled eight studies involving 1955 patients for statistical analysis. As for all patients, we found that AC could significantly increase the risk of AL after surgery (HR = 2.31, I2 = 0%, 95%CI = 1.58 to 3.38, P < 0.01). In five studies including patients undergoing colorectal surgery (benign diseases and cancers), AC was also a risk factor for AL (HR = 3.30, I2 = 2%; 95%CI = 1.83 to 5.95, P < 0.01). In terms of the other three studies that only included CRC patients, there was still a correction between AC and AL (HR = 1.80, I2 = 0%, 95%CI = 1.10 to 2.96, P = 0.02). CONCLUSION Patients with AC were more likely to develop AL after colorectal surgery. Moreover, subgroup analysis suggested that AC was a predictor for AL after CRC surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether serum lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LAR) influenced the outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients after radical surgery remained unclear. Therefore, this study sought to examine how LAR influences the short-term and long-term outcomes of CRC patients who have undergone radical surgery. METHODS This study retrospectively included CRC patients who underwent radical resection between January 2011 and January 2020. We compared short-term outcomes, as well as overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS), among various groups. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were utilized to pinpoint independent risk factors associated with overall complications and major complications. Moreover, Cox regression analysis were conducted for OS and DFS. Odds ratio (OR) and Hazard ratio (HR) were adjusted. RESULTS This study encompassed a cohort of 3868 patients. 3440 patients were in the low LAR group and 428 patients constituted the high LAR group. In the high LAR group, patients experienced significantly longer operative times (p < 0.01), larger intraoperative blood loss (p < 0.01), and extended postoperative hospital stays (p < 0.01). Additionally, the incidence of both overall complications (p < 0.01) and major complications (p < 0.01) was higher in the high LAR group compared to the low LAR group. Furthermore, LAR was emerged as an independent prognostic factor for overall complications [OR/95% CI: (1.555/1.237 to 1.954), p < 0.01] and major complications [OR/95% CI: (2.178/1.279 to 3.707), p < 0.01]. As for long-term survival, the high LAR group had worse OS in stage II (p < 0.01) and stage III (p < 0.01). In both stage II (p < 0.01) and stage III (p < 0.01), the high LAR group exhibited poorer DFS. Additionally, according to Cox regression analysis, LAR was identified as an independent predictor for both OS [HR/95% CI: (1.930/1.554 to 2.398), p < 0.01] and DFS [HR/95% CI: (1.750/1.427 to 2.146), p < 0.01]. CONCLUSION LAR emerged as an independent predictor not only for overall complications and major complications but also for both OS and DFS, highlighting its significance and deserving the attention of surgeons.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was a difference in overall survival (OS) between elderly patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and those who underwent surgery. METHODS Four databases including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and CKNI were searched on March 20, 2023. The characteristics of the studies and the baseline information of the patients, including their medical histories, postoperative data, and prognoses, were recorded. Odds ratios (ORs) or mean differences (MDs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled up to calculate baseline information and postoperative information. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs were used to calculate the prognosis of the patients. Stata V16.0 software was used for the data analysis. RESULTS A total of eight studies involving 2334 patients were included for the data analysis in this study. After pooling up the data, we found that the ESD group had lower Eastern Cooperative Oncology Groupprevious (ECOG) scores (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.17 to 0.65, I2 = 59.69%, P = 0.00 < 0.05) than the surgery group. There were significant differences in the operation time (MD = -3.38, 95% CI = -5.19 to -1.57, I2 = 98.31%, P = 0.00 < 0.05), length of hospital stay (MD = -3.01, 95% CI = -4.81 to -1.20, I2 = 98.83%, P = 0.00 < 0.05) and hospitalization expenses (MD = -2.67, 95% CI = -3.59 to -1.75, I2 = 93.21%, P = 0.00 < 0.05) between the two groups. The ESD group had a lower OS rate (HR = 2.81, 95% CI = 2.20 to 3.58, I2 = 12.28%, P = 0.00 < 0.05). CONCLUSION Elderly patients with EGC who underwent ESD had a significantly worse OS rate than those who underwent surgery. If the patient's condition was suitable, surgery was still recommended for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical site infections (SSIs) are common postoperative complications of pancreaticoduodenectomy. AIM To develop a model for preoperative identification of the risk of SSI that may improve outcomes and guide preoperative antibiotics. METHODS The prediction model was built by meta-analysis. After literature search and inclusion, data extraction, and quantitative synthesis, the prediction model was established based on the pooled odds ratio of predictors. A single-centre retrospective cohort was the validation cohort. Receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve were used to assess the model's ability. We also created a decision curve and a calibration plot to assess the nomogram. The effects of prophylactic antibiotics on SSI were compared between groups by multivariable logistic regression with different risk stratifications. FINDINGS Twenty-eight studies were included in the meta-analysis, 17 studies in the derivation cohort. Age, male gender, body mass index, pancreatic duct diameter, high-risk diagnosis, and preoperative biliary drainage were selected to build the prediction model. The model was validated in an external cohort. The cut-off value was 3.5 and area under the curve (AUC) was 0.76 in open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD). In laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, the cut-off value was 4.5 and AUC was 0.69. Decision curve and calibration plot showed good usability of the model, especially in OPD. Multivariable logistic regression did not indicate differences between broad- and narrow-spectrum antibiotics for SSI in different risk stratifications. CONCLUSION The model can identify patients with a high risk of SSI preoperatively. The choice of prophylactic antibiotics under different risk stratifications should be investigated further.

Abstract
Riverine processes are crucial for the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). The Yangtze River, the largest river in East Asia, discharges a substantial amount of Hg into the East China Sea. However, the influencing factors of the Hg budget and its recent trends remain unclear. This study quantitatively analyzed the total Hg concentration (THg) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Yangtze River and calculated the Hg budget in 2018 and 2021. The results showed that the total Hg concentrations varied substantially along the river, with concentrations ranging from 23 to 883 μg/kg in 2018 and 47 to 146 μg/kg in 2021. The average Hg flux to China Sea in 2018 and 2021 were approximately 10 Mg/yr, lower than in 2016 (48 Mg/yr). Over 70% of the SPM was trapped in the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), and 22 Mg/yr of Hg settled in the TGD in 2018 and 10 Mg/yr in 2021. Hg fluxes in the Yangtze River watershed were driven by various factors, including decreased industrial emissions, increased agriculture emissions, and decreased soil erosion flux. We found that in the upper reach of the Yangtze River changed from sink to source of Hg possibly due to the resuspension of sediments, which implies that the settled sediments could be a potential source of Hg for downstream. Overall, emission control policies may have had a positive impact on reducing Hg flux to the East China Sea from 2016 to 2021, but more efforts are needed to further reduce Hg emissions.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to find out the potential risk factors for the formation of a permanent stoma (PS) for rectal cancer patients with a temporary stoma (TS) after surgery. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for eligible studies until November 14, 2022. The patients were divided into the PS group and the TS group. Odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled up for describing dichotomous variables. Stata SE 16 was performed for data analysis. Results: After pooling up the data, a total of 14 studies involving 14,265 patients were included in this study. The outcomes showed that age (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.96 to 1.10, I2 = 1.42%, P = .00 < .1), surgery type (P = .00 < .1), tumor stage (P = .00 < .1), preoperative chemoradiotherapy (P = .00 < .1), preoperative radiotherapy (P = .01 < .1), neoadjuvant therapy (P = .00 < .1), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score of ≥3 (P = .00 < .1), anastomotic leakage (P = .01 < .1), local recurrence (P = .00 < .1), and distant recurrence (P = .00 < .1) were associated with the patient with PS. However, sex (P = .15 > .1), previous abdominal surgery (P = .84 > .1), adjuvant chemotherapy (P = .87 > .1), and defunctioning stoma (P = .1) had little association with PS. Conclusion: Patients who were elderly, had advanced tumor stages, had a high ASA score, and underwent neoadjuvant therapy should be informed of the high risk of PS before surgery. Meanwhile, those who underwent rectal cancer surgery with a TS should beware of anastomotic leakage, local recurrences, and distant recurrences, which could increase the risk of PS.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the influence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC) patients performed primary surgery in terms of short-term and long-term outcomes. METHODS Patients diagnosed with stage IV CRC and received primary CRC surgery at a single clinical center from Jan, 2013 to Jan, 2020 were included in this study. Baseline characteristics, short-term and long-term outcomes were compared between the T2DM group and the Non-T2DM group. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to find risk factors for overall survival (OS). Propensity score matching (PSM) using a 1:1 ratio was used to minimize selective bias between the two groups. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 22.0) software. RESULTS A total of 302 eligible patients were enrolled, and there were 54 (17.9%) patients with T2DM, and 248 (82.1%) patients without T2DM. The T2DM group had more older patients (P < 0.01), higher body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.01), and a higher proportion of hypertension (P < 0.01) than the Non-T2DM group. After PSM, there were 48 patients in each group. There were no significant differences in short-term outcomes or OS between the two groups, either before or after PSM (P > 0.05). In multivariate analysis, older age (P < 0.01, HR = 1.032, 95% CI = 1.014-1.051) and larger tumor size (P < 0.01, HR = 1.760, 95% CI = 1.179-2.626) were independent factors for OS. CONCLUSION Although T2DM did not influence short-term outcomes or OS in stage IV CRC patients after primary surgery, age and tumor size might have predictive value for OS.

Abstract
Mn3O4 nanoparticles composed of porous reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (Mn3O4@p-rGO) with enhanced oxidase-like activity were successfully fabricated through an in-situ approach for fast colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The residual Mn2+ in the GO suspension of Hummers method was directly reused as the manganese source, improving the atom utilization efficiency. Benefiting from the uniform distribution of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of p-rGO nanosheets, the nanocomposite exhibited larger surface area, more active sites, and accelerated electron transfer efficiency, which enhanced the oxidase-like activity. Mn3O4@p-rGO nanocomposite efficiently activate dissolved O2 to generate singlet oxygen (1O2), leading to high oxidation capacity toward the substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) without the extra addition of H2O2. Furthermore, the prominent absorption peak of the blue ox-TMB at 652 nm gradually decreased in the presence of AA, and a facile and fast colorimetric sensor was constructed with a good linear relationship (0.5-80 μM) and low LOD (0.278 μM) toward AA. Owing to the simplicity and excellent stability of the sensing platform, its practical application for AA detection in juices has shown good feasibility and reliability compared with HPLC and the 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine colorimetric method. The oxidase-like Mn3O4@p-rGO provides a versatile platform for applications in food testing and disease diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of preoperative bicarbonate and lactate levels (LL) on the short-term outcomes and prognosis in elderly (≥ 65 years) patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS We collected the information of CRC patients from Jan 2011 to Jan 2020 in a single clinical center. According to the results of preoperative blood gas analysis, we divided patients into the higher/lower bicarbonate group and the higher/lower lactate group, and compared their baseline information, surgery-related information, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS A total of 1473 patients were included in this study. Comparing the clinical data of the higher/lower bicarbonate group and the higher/lower lactate group, the lower group were older (p < 0.01), had higher rates of coronary heart disease (CHD) (p = 0.025), a higher proportion of colon tumors (p < 0.01), larger tumor size (p < 0.01), higher rates of open surgery (p < 0.01), more intraoperative blood loss (p < 0.01), higher overall complications (p < 0.01) and 30-day deaths (p < 0.01). The higher LL patients had more male patients (p < 0.01), higher body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.01) and drinking rates (p = 0.049), higher rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (p < 0.01) and lower rates of open surgery (p < 0.01). In multivariate analysis, age (p < 0.01), BMI (p = 0.036), T2DM (p = 0.023), and surgical methods (p < 0.01) were independent risk factors of overall complications. The independent risk factors for OS included age (p < 0.01), tumor site (p = 0.014), tumor stage (p < 0.01), tumor size (p = 0.036), LL (p < 0.01), and overall complications (p < 0.01). The independent risk factors of DFS included age (p = 0.012), tumor site (p = 0.019), tumor stage (p < 0.01), LL (p < 0.01), and overall complications (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Preoperative LL significantly affected postoperative OS and DFS of CRC patients, but bicarbonate might not affect the prognosis of CRC patients. Therefore, surgeons should actively focus on and adjust the LL of patients before surgery.

Abstract
The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of bilirubin on the outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC) in patients who underwent radical CRC surgery. The levels of serum bilirubin, including total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin (DBil) and indirect bilirubin (IBil), were divided into higher groups and lower groups according to the median. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to analyze the independent predictors for overall complications and major complications. For TBil, the hospitalization time of the higher TBil group was longer than that of the lower TBil group (p = 0.014 < 0.05). For DBil, the higher DBil group had longer operation times (p < 0.01), more intraoperative bleeding (p < 0.01), longer hospital stays (p < 0.01), and higher rates of overall complications (p < 0.01) and major complications (p = 0.021 < 0.05) than the lower DBil group. For the IBil group, blood loss during operation (p < 0.01) and hospital stays (p = 0.041 < 0.05) in the higher IBil group were lower than those in the lower IBil group. In terms of complications, we found that DBil was an independent predictor for overall complications (p < 0.01, OR = 1.036, 95% CI = 1.014-1.058) and major complications (p = 0.043, HR= 1.355, 95% CI= 1.009-1.820). Higher preoperative DBil increase the risk of complications after primary CRC surgery.

Abstract
West Dongting Lake is a protected wetland with the potential for high levels of mercury release via wastewater and deposition from industry and agriculture during the last decade. To find out the ability of various plant species to accumulate mercury pollutants from soil and water, nine sites were studied in the downstream direction of the flow of the Yuan and Li Rivers, which are tributaries of the Yellow River flowing into West Dongting Lake, where mercury levels arere high in soil and plant tissues. The total mercury (THg) concentration in wetland soil was 0.078-1.659 mg/kg, which varied along the gradient of water flow along the river. According to canonical correspondence analysis and correlation analysis, there was a positive correlation between the soil THg concentration and the soil moisture in West Dongting Lake. There is high heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of soil THg concentration in West Dongting Lake, which may be related to the spatial heterogeneity of the soil moisture. Some plant species had higher THg concentrations in aboveground tissues (translocation factor >1), but none of these plant species fit the criteria as hyperaccumulators of mercury. And some species of the same ecological type (e.g., emergent, submergent, floating-leaved) exhibited very different strategies for mercury uptake. The concentrations of mercury in these species were lower than in other studies but these had relatively higher translocation factors. To phytoremediate soil mercury in West Dongting Lake, the regular harvest of plants could help remove mercury from soil and plant tissue.

Abstract
Surface oxidation engineering is an effective strategy to construct nanomaterials with enhanced biocatalytic activity. In this study, a facile one-pot oxidation strategy was proposed to synthesize partially oxidized molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (ox-MoS2 NSs), which exhibit good water solubility and can be used as an excellent peroxidase substitute. Under the oxidation process, Mo-S bonds are partially broke and S atoms are replaced by excess oxygen atoms, and the released abundant heat and gases efficiently expended the interlayer distance and weaken the van der Waals forces between adjacent layers. Porous ox-MoS2 NSs can be easily exfoliated by further sonication, and the nanosheets exhibits excellent water dispersibility and no obvious sediment appear even after store for months. Benefiting from the desirable affinity property with enzyme substrates, optimized electronic structure and prominent electron transfer efficiency, the ox-MoS2 NSs exhibit enhanced peroxidase-mimic activity. Furthermore, the ox-MoS2 NSs catalyzed 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation reaction could be inhibited by the redox reaction that take place between glutathione (GSH) as well as the direct interaction between GSH and ox-MoS2 NSs. Thus, a colorimetric sensing platform was constructed for GSH detection with good sensitivity and stability. This work provides a facile strategy for engineering structure of nanomaterials and improving enzyme-mimic performance.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current study aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of Enhanced Recovery after surgery (ERAS) in older patients undergoing colorectal surgery. METHODS Three databases including PubMed, Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Library were used for searching eligible studies on Jun 8th,2022. To evaluate the effect of ERAS, we focused on the short-term outcomes including postoperative complications and recovery. Subgroup analysis was also conducted for patients undergoing colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. All the data processing and analyses were carried out by Stata (V.16.0) software. RESULTS Finally, there were fourteen studies involving 5961 patients enrolled in this study. As for surgical outcomes, we found that the older group had more overall complications (OR = 1.41, I2 = 36.59%, 95% CI = 1.20 to 1.65, P = 0.00), more obstruction (OR = 1.462, I2 = 0.00%, 95% CI = 1.037 to 2.061, P = 0.0304), more respiratory complications (OR = 1.721, I2 = 0.00%, 95% CI = 1.177 to 2.515, P = 0.0051), more cardiovascular complications (OR = 3.361, I2 = 57.72%, 95% CI = 1.072 to 10.542, P = 0.0377), more urinary complications (OR = 1.639, I2 = 37.63%, 95% CI = 1.168 to 2.299, P = 0.0043), less readmission (OR = 0.662, I2 = 44.48%, 95% CI = 0.484 to 0.906, P = 0.0100), higher mortality (OR = 0.662, I2 = 44.48%, 95% CI = 0.484 to 0.906, P = 0.0100), and longer overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.21, I2 = 0.00%, 95% CI = 0.566 to 1.859, P = 0.0002)). Subgroup analysis also found that older CRC patients had a higher risk of overall complications (OR = 1.37, I2 = 37.51%, 95% CI = 1.06 to 1.78, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Although ERAS could accelerate postoperative recovery and reduce postoperative complications, older patients who received ERAS still had higher complication incidence than younger patients. Although the proportion of re-hospitalizations was lower and the OS was better, doctors could not rely too much on ERAS. More measures were needed to improve the outcomes of colorectal surgery in older patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the stoma on sexual function in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS Search strategy was conducted in four databases including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Medline on Nov 20, 2022. After that, the quality of eligible studies was assessed by the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ). In order to evaluate the sexual function between the stoma group and the non-stoma group, mean values and standard deviation were pooled for scores in questionnaires, and odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals were pooled for self-designed problems. Results were shown in forest plots; Egger's test and the trim and fill analysis were used for assessing the publication bias. All the data analyses above were performed by STATA 16.0 software. RESULTS Six cohort studies and three cross-sectional studies were included for this pooling up analysis. As for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-C38), male patients with stomas had more sexual problems (mean differences = 0.32, 95% confidence intervals = 0.01 to 0.63, I2 = 67.80%, P = 0.05); however, other indicators including sexual functioning, sexual enjoyment, and female sexual problems had little difference between the two groups. As for other questionnaires and problems, stoma did not have an impact on sexual function. CONCLUSION The stoma after surgery was not significantly associated with the sexual function of female patients with colorectal cancer and was associated with worse scores on only sexual problems for males.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore whether liver cirrhosis (LC) influences short-term and long-term outcomes in gastric neoplasm patients who undergo endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Materials and Methods: Eligible studies were identified in three databases, including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library on December 18, 2022. Clinical characteristics, short-term outcomes, and long-term outcomes were compared between an LC group and a no liver cirrhosis (NLC) group. For continuous variables, the mean difference (MD) and standard deviation (SD) were pooled. For discontinuous variables, raw data from the 2 × 2 tables or odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled. Forest plots were used to show the results, and a funnel plot was used to evaluate publication bias. Data analyses were performed by STATA SE 16.0 software. Results: Six retrospective studies involving 1616 gastric neoplasm patients were included in the study. Clinical characteristics, including age, gender, location, macroscopic type, invasion depth, differentiation, and ulceration, were found to be not significantly different between the LC group and the NLC group (P > .05). Moreover, LC was not a risk factor for short-term outcomes, including operative time (MD = 0.15, 95% CI = -0.02 to 0.32, I2 = 0.00%, P = .09), en bloc resection (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.43-1.75, I2 = 0.00%, P = .69), R0 resection (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.42-1.43, I2 = 8.97%, P = .41), bleeding (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.62-1.93, I2 = 0.00%, P = .75), and perforation (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 0.45-5.84, I2 = 0.00%, P = .46). However, gastric cancer patients with LC exhibited a higher recurrence rate (OR = 3.40, 95% CI = 1.09-10.61, I2 = 0.00%, P = .04) after ESD. Conclusion: Surgeons performing ESD in gastric neoplasm patients should pay more attention to long-term effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) is a comprehensive assessment indicator that can reflect inflammation and nutrition conditions. However, there are some controversies about whether ALI is an independent prognostic factor for gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing surgical resection. Thus, we aimed to clarify its prognostic value and explore the potential mechanisms. METHODS Four databases including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and CNKI were used for searching eligible studies from inception to June 28, 2022. All gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), gastric cancer (GC), esophageal cancer (EC), liver cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic cancer were enrolled for analysis. We focused on prognosis most in the current meta-analysis. Survival indicators, including overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-special survival (CSS) were compared between the high ALI group and the low ALI group. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist was submitted as a supplementary document. RESULTS We finally included fourteen studies involving 5091 patients in this meta-analysis. After pooling the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), ALI was found to be an independent prognostic factor for both OS (HR = 2.09, I2 = 92%, 95% CI = 1.53 to 2.85, P < 0.01), DFS (HR = 1.48, I2 = 83%, 95% CI = 1.18 to 1.87, P < 0.01), and CSS (HR = 1.28, I2 = 1%, 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.60, P = 0.03) in gastrointestinal cancer. After subgroup analysis, we found that ALI was still closely related to OS for CRC (HR = 2.26, I2 = 93%, 95% CI = 1.53 to 3.32, P < 0.01) and GC (HR = 1.51, I2 = 40%, 95% CI = 1.13 to 2.04, P = 0.006) patients. As for DFS, ALI also has a predictive value on the prognosis of CRC (HR = 1.54, I2 = 85%, 95% CI = 1.14 to 2.07, P = 0.005) and GC (HR = 1.37, I2 = 0%, 95% CI = 1.09 to 1.73, P = 0.007) patients. CONCLUSION ALI affected gastrointestinal cancer patients in terms of OS, DFS, and CSS. Meanwhile, ALI was a prognostic factor both for CRC and GC patients after subgroup analysis. Patients with low ALI had poorer prognoses. We recommended that surgeons should perform aggressive interventions in patients with low ALI before the operation.

Abstract
Purpose: To figure out whether enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) could effectively improve the prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and reduce hospitalization expenses under the shadow of COVID-19, furthermore to alleviate the current situation of medical resource for the whole society. Methods: Patients who underwent CRC surgery in the department of gastrointestinal surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital from January 2020 to March 2022 were retrospectively enrolled. According to protocol adherence, all patients were divided into the ERAS group and the non-ERAS group. Short-term outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 918 patients were enrolled in the study. Based on protocol adherence ≥70%, 265 patients were classified into the ERAS group and the other 653 patients were classified into the non-ERAS group. Patients in the ERAS group had shorter operation time (P < .01), less intraoperative blood loss (P < .01), shorter overall hospital stay (P < .01) and postoperative hospital stay (P < .01), less hospital costs (P < .01), earlier first flatus (P < .01), earlier first stool (P < .01), earlier food tolerance (P < .01), and lower postoperative complications (P < .01). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis manifested that ERAS and cerebrovascular disease were predictive factors of postoperative overall complications. In univariate analyses, cerebrovascular disease (P = .033, OR = 2.225, 95% CI = 1.066-4.748), time of the surgery (P = .026, OR = 1.417, 95% CI = 1.043-1.925), and ERAS (P < .01, OR = 0.450, 95% CI = 0.307-0.661) were predictive factors. Furthermore, in the multivariate analysis, ERAS (P < .01, OR = 0.440, 95% CI = 0.295-0.656) and cerebrovascular disease (P = .016, OR = 2.575, 95% CI = 1.190-5.575) were independent predictive factors of postoperative overall complications. Conclusion: In summary, under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, ERAS could still reduce the financial burden of patients and reduce the incidence of short-term postoperative complications. However, whether the effects of ERAS were enhanced after the pandemic and the long-term outcomes of CRC obey ERAS remained to be further explored.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcomes after simultaneous gastrectomy plus cholecystectomy in gastric cancer patients. PUBMED, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to Apr 15, 2021. Short-term surgical outcomes were compared between the simultaneous gastrectomy plus cholecystectomy group and the gastrectomy only group. Five retrospective studies with 3,315 patients and 1 randomized controlled trial with 130 patients were included. There was no significant difference in age, sex, surgical methods, or reconstruction. In terms of short-term outcomes, no significance was found in postoperative complications (odds ratio, OR = 1.08, I 2 = 24%, 95% CI = 0.78-1.50, P = 0.65), postoperative biliary complications (OR = 0.98, I 2 = 0%, 95% CI = 0.43-2.25, P = 0.96), mortality (OR = 1.28, I 2 = 0%, 95% CI = 0.49-3.37, P = 0.61), and postoperative hospital stay (MD = -0.10, I 2 = 0%, 95% CI = -0.73-0.54, P = 0.77) between the two groups. Simultaneous gastrectomy plus cholecystectomy in gastric cancer patients is safe and does not increase the short-term outcomes.

Abstract
The efficient and green extraction of bioactive ingredients from natural plants play a vital role in their corresponding drug effects and subsequent studies. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered promising new green solvents for efficiently and selectively extracting substances from varied plants. In this work, an environment-friendly DESs-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (DESs-UAE) procedure was developed for highly efficient and non-polluting extraction of alkaloids from the roots of Stephania tetrandra (ST). A total of fifteen different combinations of DESs, compared with traditional organic solvents (methanol and 95% ethanol) and water, were evaluated for extraction of bioactive alkaloids (FAN and TET) from ST, and the results revealed that DESs system made up of choline chloride and ethylene glycol with mole ratio of 1:2 exhibited the optimal extraction efficiency for alkaloids. Additionally, a four-factor and three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD), a particular pattern of response surface methodology (RSM), was used to optimize extraction conditions. RSM results indicated that the maximum extraction yields of FAN, TET, and TA were attained 7.23, 13.36, 20.59 mg/g, respectively, within extraction temperature of 52 °C, extraction time of 82 min, DES water content of 23% (v/v), and liquid-solid ratio of 23 mL/g. The measured results were consistent with the predicted values. Notably, the optimized DES extraction efficiency of TA, according to the experimental data analysis, is 2.2, 3.3 and 4.1 times higher than methanol, 95% ethanol and water, respectively. Meanwhile, based on 3D response surface plots, interactive effects plots and contour maps, the effects of the aforementioned four essential factors on the extraction yield and their interactions on the response were visualized. The results revealed that the mutual interactions between extraction temperature and liquid-solid ratio exhibited positive effects on all responses, while extraction time and water content in DES posed a negative effect. Therefore, these results suggest that DESs, as a class of novel green solvents, with the potential to substitute organic solvent and water, can be widely and effectively applied to extract bioactive compounds from natural plants.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare the short-term outcomes between laparoscopic Hartmann reversal (LHR) and open Hartmann reversal (OHR) in patients who had undergone Hartmann surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS The patients who underwent Hartmann reversal (HR) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from Jun 2013 to Jun 2022 were retrospectively enrolled. The LHR group and the OHR group were compared using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. RESULTS A total of 89 patients who underwent Hartmann reversal (HR) were enrolled in this study. There were 48 (53.9%) patients in the LHR group and 41 (46.1%) patients in the OHR group. After 1:1 ratio PSM, no difference in baseline information remained (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in operation time, blood loss, postoperative hospital stay, and postoperative complications (p > 0.05) before and after PSM. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, pre-operative albumin < 42.0 g/L was an independent risk factor (p = 0.013 < 0.05, OR = 0.248, 95% CI = 0.083-0.741) for the HR-related complications; however, LHR/OHR was not a predictive risk factor (p = 0.663, OR = 1.250, 95% CI = 0.500-3.122). CONCLUSION Based on the current evidence, although there was no difference in short-term prognosis, LHR still had some advantages considering that it was less invasive to the patient.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third in highest incidence among human cancers. With the continuous development of anti-cancer drugs, CRC patients are treated more and more effectively. However, the treatment of patients with unresectable metastatic CRC (mCRC) remains a core point for surgeons worldwide, especially for those with microsatellite stability (MSS) and BRAF V600E mutation, who have been reported to have the worst prognosis. Case description We report a case of pathological complete remission in a patient with unresectable MSS, BRAF V600E-mutated metastatic rectal cancer after using Vemurafenib and Cetuximab in combination with Camrelizumab. Conclusions This case suggested that Vemurafenib and Cetuximab combined with Camrelizumab is effective in the treatment of MSS, BRAF V600E-mutated mCRC. To benefit more patients, further studies need to be completed.

Abstract
Due to its unique biological composition, aquatic products, especially fish, are extremely perishable compared to other muscle products. Herein, we proposed an artificial nanozyme-based colorimetric detection of hypoxanthine (Hx), the indicator of fish freshness, in a minute-time scale without the assistance of a natural enzyme (hypoxanthine oxidase). The principle is based on the interaction between Hx and polyvinylpyrrolidone-modified platinum cubic nanomaterials (PVP-PtNC), in which the catalytic active sites of PVP-PtNC's surface were blocked by Hx. This causes the downregulation of PVP-PtNC's catalytic ability and weakened its ability to catalyze the oxidization of 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2. Accordingly, the decrease in the UV-vis absorption and the weakening of the colorimetric reaction color is proportional to the Hx concentration. On this basis, a target-triggered colorimetric method for detecting Hx is developed for fish freshness monitoring with a fast detection speed, low cost, high accuracy, and simplified operation. Experiments reveal that the correlation response of Hx is from 0.5 μM to 10 mM with a limit of detection of 0.16 μM. In particular, the Hx detected from real fish indicates that the method possesses a promising potential for practical application. All of these features are expected to promote the development of online detection tools for food safety monitoring.
