Porous FeNi Prussian blue cubes derived carbon-based phosphides as superior sulfur hosts for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

In contrast to lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries have higher theoretical energy density and lower cost, so they would become competitive in the practical application. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides and slow oxidation-reduction kinetics can degrade their electrochemical performance and cycle life. In this work, we have first developed the porous FeNi Prussian blue cubes as precursors. The calcination in different atmospheres was employed to make precursors convert into common pyrolysis products or novel carbon-based phosphides, and sulfides, labeled as FeNiP/A-C, FeNiP/A-P, and FeNiP/A-S. When these products serve as host materials in the sulfur cathode, the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur batteries is in the order of S@FeNiP/A-P > S@FeNiP/A-S > S@FeNiP/A-C. Specifically, the initial discharge capacity of S@FeNiP/A-P can reach 679.1 mAh g-1at 1 C, and the capacity would maintain 594.6 mAh g-1after 300 cycles. That is because the combination of carbon-based porous structure and numerous well-dispersed Ni2P/Fe2P active sites contribute FeNiP/A-P to obtain larger lithium-ion diffusion, lower resistance, stronger chemisorption, and more excellent catalytic effect than other samples. This work may deliver that metal-organic framework-derived carbon-based phosphides are more suitable to serve as sulfur hosts than carbon-based sulfides or common pyrolysis products for enhancing Li-S batteries' performance.

Transition Metal Phosphides: The Rising Star of Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cathode Host

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with ultra-high energy density (2600 W h kg-1 ) and readily available raw materials are emerging as a potential alternative device with low cost for lithium-ion batteries. However, the insulation of sulfur and the unavoidable shuttle effect leads to slow reaction kinetics of LSBs, which in turn cause various roadblocks including poor rate capability, inferior cycling stability, and low coulombic efficiency. The most effective way to solve the issues mentioned above is to rationally design and control the synthesis of the cathode host for LSBs. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with good electrical conductivity and dual adsorption-conversion capabilities for polysulfide (PS) are regarded as promising cathode hosts for new-generation LSBs. In this review, the main obstacles to commercializing the LSBs and the development processes of their cathode host are first elaborated. Then, the sulfur fixation principles, and synthesis methods of the TMPs are briefly summarized and the recent progress of TMPs in LSBs is reviewed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the future research directions of LSBs is provided.

Recent Advances and Strategies toward Polysulfides Shuttle Inhibition for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as the most promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical applications are seriously hindered by several inevitable drawbacks, especially the shuttle effects of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) which lead to rapid capacity decay and short cycling lifespan. This review specifically concentrates on the shuttle path of LiPSs and their interaction with the corresponding cell components along the moving way, systematically retrospect the recent advances and strategies toward polysulfides diffusion suppression. Overall, the strategies for the shuttle effect inhibition can be classified into four parts, including capturing the LiPSs in the sulfur cathode, reducing the dissolution in electrolytes, blocking the shuttle channels by functional separators, and preventing the chemical reaction between LiPSs and Li metal anode. Herein, the fundamental aspect of Li-S batteries is introduced first to give an in-deep understanding of the generation and shuttle effect of LiPSs. Then, the corresponding strategies toward LiPSs shuttle inhibition along the diffusion path are discussed step by step. Finally, general conclusions and perspectives for future research on shuttle issues and practical application of Li-S batteries are proposed.

Porphyrin Organic Framework Hollow Spheres and Their Applications in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Organic frameworks represent an emerging family of advanced materials that can be precisely controlled at the atomic level. However, morphology control of organic frameworks remains perplexing and difficult, strongly limiting the advantages of organic frameworks in multiple practical applications. Herein, porphyrin organic framework hollow spheres (POF-HSs) are fabricated by a template method as a proof of concept of organic frameworks with precisely controlled morphology. POF-HS exhibits explicit chemical structures of 2D POF and an expected hollow structure. The morphology of POF-HS is further regulated in terms of void size and shell thickness. Benefited from the polar chemical structures and the hollow spherical morphology, POF-HS sufficiently mitigates the shuttle of polysulfides by taking the dual effects of chemical adsorption and physical confinement and functions as a desirable host material for sulfur cathode to endow lithium-sulfur batteries with high capacity, long cycling life, and excellent rate performance. The accurate synthesis of POF-HSs demonstrates the highly controllable and versatile morphology of organic framework materials beyond precise integration of organic building blocks and represents infinite possibility of offering exotic organic frameworks for chemistry, sustainable energy, and material science.

Superhierarchical Cobalt-Embedded Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets as Two-in-One Hosts for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, based on the redox reaction between elemental sulfur and lithium metal, have attracted great interest because of their inherently high theoretical energy density. However, the severe polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics in sulfur cathodes, as well as dendrite growth in lithium-metal anodes are great obstacles for their practical application. Herein, a two-in-one approach with superhierarchical cobalt-embedded nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (Co/N-PCNSs) as stable hosts for both elemental sulfur and metallic lithium to improve their performance simultaneously is reported. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that stable Co nanoparticles, elaborately encapsulated by N-doped graphitic carbon, can work synergistically with N heteroatoms to reserve the soluble polysulfides and promote the redox reaction kinetics of sulfur cathodes. Moreover, the high-surface-area pore structure and the Co-enhanced lithiophilic N heteroatoms in Co/N-PCNSs can regulate metallic lithium plating and successfully suppress lithium dendrite growth in the anodes. As a result, a full lithium-sulfur cell constructed with Co/N-PCNSs as two-in-one hosts demonstrates excellent capacity retention with stable Coulombic efficiency.
