Head and eye movements following vestibular stimulus in squirrel monkeys

Head stabilization by vestibulocollic reflexes during quadrupedal locomotion in monkey

Little is known about the three-dimensional characteristics of vestibulocollic reflexes during natural locomotion. Here we determined how well head stability is maintained by the angular and linear vestibulocollic reflexes (aVCR, lVCR) during quadrupedal locomotion in rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys. Animals walked on a treadmill at velocities of 0.4-1.25 m/s. Head rotations were represented by Euler angles (Fick convention). The head oscillated in yaw and roll at stride frequencies (approximately 1-2 Hz) and pitched at step frequencies (approximately 2-4 Hz). Head angular accelerations (100-2,500 degrees/s2) were sufficient to have excited the aVOR to stabilize gaze. Pitch and roll head movements were <7 degrees , peak to peak, and the amplitude was unrelated to stride frequency. Yaw movements were larger due to spontaneous voluntary head shifts and were smaller at higher walking velocities. Head translations were small (< or =4 cm). Cynomolgus monkeys positioned their heads more forward in pitch than the rhesus monkeys. None of the animals maintained a forward head fixation point, indicating that the lVCR contributed little to compensatory head movements in these experiments. Significantly, aVCR gains in roll and pitch were close to unity and phases were approximately 180 degrees over the full frequency range of natural walking, which is in contrast to previous findings using anesthesia or passive trunk rotation with body restraint. We conclude that the behavioral state associated with active body motion is necessary to maintain head stability in pitch and roll over the full range of stride/step frequencies encountered during walking.

The role of compensatory eye and head movements in the rat for image stabilization and gaze orientation

Compensatory horizontal eye movements of head restrained rats were compared with compensatory horizontal eye-head movements of partially restrained rats (head movements limited to the horizontal plane). Responses were evoked by constant velocity optokinetic and vestibular stimuli (10-60 degrees/s) and recorded with search coils in a rotating magnetic field. Velocity and position components of eye and head responses were analysed. The velocity gains of optokinetic and vestibular responses of partially restrained and of head restrained rats were similarly high (between 0.8 and 1.0). Eye movements in partially restrained rats also contributed most (about 80%) to the velocity components of the responses. At stimulus velocities above 10 degrees/s, the "beating field" of the evoked optokinetic and vestibular nystagmus was shifted transiently in the direction of ocular quick phases. The amplitude of this shift of the line of sight was about 3-10 degrees in head restrained and about 20-30 degrees in partially head restrained rats. Most of this large, transient gaze shift (about 80%) was accomplished by head movements. We interpret this gaze shift as an orienting response, and conclude that the recruitment of the ocular and the neck motor systems can be independent and task specific: head movements are primarily used to orient eye, ear and nose towards a sector of particular relevance, whereas eye movements provide the higher frequency dynamics for image stabilization and vergence movements.

Vestibular hyperreactivity in patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis

Ocular motor tests performed on 14 patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis were normal. The vestibulo-ocular reflex tested in eight patients showed a significant high level in seven. It is suggested that this phenomenon is secondary rather than the cause of spasmodic torticollis.

Nystagmus generated by sinusoidal pitch while rotating

Sinusoidal pitch while rotating about a vertical axis in darkness causes continuous horizontal compensatory nystagmus in the monkey which persists for the duration of stimulation. The steady-state velocity sums with post-rotatory nystagmus to reduce or cancel it, suggesting involvement of the velocity storage mechanism. Analysis of the labyrinthine excitation during pitch while rotating suggests that the vertical canals play a predominant role in generating the response. Effects of selective labyrinthine lesions are in agreement with this hypothesis. Plugging the lateral canals, leaving the vertical canals intact, blocked the initial rapid response at the onset of rotation, but did not interrupt the continuous nystagmus induced by pitch while rotating. On the other hand, plugging the vertical canals abolished the response. If the lateral canal nerves were cut so that the velocity storage mechanism was inactivated, the continuous response to pitch while rotating also disappeared. The dominant labyrinth activation responsible for the nystagmus during pitching while rotating appears to arise in the vertical semicircular canals and to couple to the oculomotor system through the velocity storage mechanism.

Vestibular-visual conflict sickness in the squirrel monkey

When combined vestibular and visual (optokinetic) stimuli were given to squirrel monkeys in a direction and phase mismatching sinusoidal mode (in yaw plane), five of six monkeys exhibited actual emesis during three repeated exposures on separate trial days. Two animals vomited on two trial days and three animals, on one day. The incidence took place in 38.9% of the total trial days. When the identical vestibular and visual stimuli were given individually, the effect was negligible, thus confirming each stimulus magnitude was not stressful enough to produce emesis when used separately.

The effect of amphetamine on head and eye movements following vestibular stimulation in squirrel monkeys

The effect of a single dose intra-muscular injection of amphetamine sulfate on head and eye movements evoked by vestibular stimulation was investigated in squirrel monkeys. Doses injected were 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2 mg/kg, and control no injections. Amphetamine did not change the gain of vestibular evoked head and eye movements, but prolonged time constant (in function of dose) showing greater effect in eye movements. More than 0.3 mg/kg was found to be a proper dose for this species to maintain an appropriate constant alertness level for vestibular studies.
