Abstract
BACKGROUND The medical community is beginning to recognize that retinitis pigmentosa (RP), due to its disabling progression, eventually leads to a reduction in the patient´s quality of life, a direct economic impact, and an increase in the burden on the health care system. There is no curative treatment for the origin of the disease, and most of the current interventions fail in reducing the associated negative psychological states, such as anxiety and depression, which lead to increased variability of vision and pose a continuous threat to the patient's independence. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to assess the effect of oral melatonin (OM) administration alone and combined with short-wavelength light (SWL)-blocking filters on patients with RP and test their effectiveness in improving the level of stress and sleep problems in many of these patients. METHODS We have developed a low-cost therapy protocol for patients with RP with sleep disorders and negative psychological stress. Patients will be randomized to receive a combined intervention with SWL-blocking filters and OM, SWL-blocking filters alone, or OM alone. There will also be a nonintervention arm as a control group. This study will be conducted across 2 retinal units in patients with RP with sleep disorders and high perceived stress and anxiety score reports. Patients will be assessed in the preintervention period, weekly during the 4 weeks of intervention, and then at 6 months postintervention. The primary outcomes are the differences in changes from baseline to postintervention in hormone release (α-amylase, cortisol, and melatonin) and sleep quality, as measured with the visual analog scale. Secondary outcome measures include clinical macular changes, as measured with optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography; retinal function, as measured using the visual field and best-corrected visual acuity; sleep data collected from personal wearables; and several patient-reported variables, such as self-recorded sleep diaries, quality of life, perceived stress, and functional status. RESULTS This project is still a study protocol and has not yet started. Bibliographic research for information for its justification began in 2020, and this working group is currently seeking start-up funding. As soon as we have the necessary means, we will proceed with the registration and organization prior to the preliminary phase. CONCLUSIONS In this feasibility randomized clinical controlled trial, we will compare the effects of SWL blocking alone, administration of OM alone, and a combined intervention with both in patients with RP. We present this study so that it may be replicated and incorporated into future studies at other institutions, as well as applied to additional inherited retinal dystrophies. The goal of presenting this protocol is to aid recent efforts in reducing the impact of sleeping disorders and other psychological disorders on the quality of life in patients with RP and recovering their self-autonomy. In addition, the results of this study will represent a significant step toward developing a novel low-cost therapy for patients with RP and validating a novel therapeutic target. Abstract
PURPOSE To present a classification of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and evaluate its content coverage in comparison with common standard terminology systems. METHODS In this comparative cross-sectional study, a panel of subject matter experts annotated a list of IRDs based on a comprehensive review of the literature. Then, they leveraged clinical terminologies from various reference sets including Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED-CT) and Orphanet Rare Disease Ontology (ORDO). RESULTS Initially, we generated a hierarchical classification of 62 IRD diagnosis concepts in six categories. Subsequently, the classification was extended to 164 IRD diagnoses after adding concepts from various standard terminologies. Finally, 158 concepts were selected to be classified into six categories and genetic subtypes of 412 cases were added to the related concepts. UMLS has the greatest content coverage of 90.51% followed respectively by SNOMED-CT (83.54%), ORDO (81.01%), OMIM (60.76%), and ICD-11 (60.13%). There were 53 IRD concepts (33.54%) that were covered by all five investigated systems. However, 2.53% of the IRD concepts in our classification were not covered by any of the standard terminologies. CONCLUSIONS This comprehensive classification system was established to organize IRD diseases based on phenotypic and genotypic specifications. It could potentially be used for IRD clinical documentation purposes and could also be considered a preliminary step forward to developing a more robust standard ontology for IRDs or updating available standard terminologies. In comparison, the greatest content coverage of our proposed classification was related to the UMLS Metathesaurus.

Here, we outline the aspects of the history and ophthalmic exam that are most important for the evaluation of RP patients. In addition, the expected findings of RP patients and the etiology of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to evaluate vision-related quality of life and visual ability in patients with OPA1 autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA). METHODS This cross-sectional, observational study included 145 participants with a mutation in the OPA1 gene associated with ADOA, 63 mutation-free first-degree relatives and 92 healthy subjects unrelated to the families. Participants underwent a clinical eye examination, and adult participants completed the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-39), while children completed the Cardiff Visual Ability Questionnaire for Children (CVAQC). RESULTS In adults with ADOA, both mean visual acuity (VA) and mean contrast sensitivity (CS) were significantly inferior to both first-degree relatives and unrelated controls (p < 0.001). In children with ADOA, mean VA was significantly lower compared with first-degree relatives (p = 0.0052), whereas CS was not (0.127). Adults with ADOA scored lower than both comparator groups on composite score (p < 0.001), general health subscale (p = 0.0075) and all vision-related subscales (p < 0.001) except the ocular pain subscale (p = 0.2). In children with ADOA, the median CVAQC logit score was significantly lower compared with first-degree relatives (p = 0.037). The science lessons subscale was significantly lower for children with ADOA compared with first-degree relatives (p = 0.046), as well as the language lessons subscale (p = 0.038). For adults, composite score and subscale scores were significantly associated with both VA, CS and fixation status. CONCLUSION OPA1 mutation is associated with lower quality of life and visual ability in patients with ADOA compared with both first-degree relatives and unrelated controls. VA, CS and fixation status affect quality of life in patients with ADOA.

Abstract
Purpose We aimed to assess the performance of the modified-Esterman test (mET) as a rapid suprathreshold binocular quantification tool for the assessment of peripheral visual fields. The mET consists of an even spread of test points across the visual field. Materials and Methods The mET was implemented on the Octopus 0900 perimeter using the Open Perimetry Interface (OPI) and consisted of 160 points. Patients with choroideremia, a rod-cone dystrophy, Stargardt disease, a cone-rod dystrophy, and healthy volunteers underwent both the mET and the standard Esterman tests twice. Disease severity (mild/moderate/severe) was graded on both tests independently. Voronoi tessellation was utilised to compare the tests. Results The Voronoi visualisation was able to demonstrate that the mET was able to provide more information about the disease state at all stages of diseases. This was confirmed by the agreement statistic, which showed that the mET detected 27% more points of visual field loss compared to the Esterman test, being most useful in patients with rod-cone dystrophies. Conclusion The mET provides a speedy quantitative measure of the peripheral visual field loss, which can be used in clinical trials to monitor longitudinal assessment of peripheral visual function. The mET provides a more even coverage across the visual field compared to the Esterman test points, making it more suitable for this purpose. This is a key part of safety monitoring in retinal clinical trials. The mET can easily be implemented on commercially available perimeters that allow Open Perimetry.

Abstract
Background To investigate microstructural alterations of white matter in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients by tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Material/Methods. DTI was performed on 14 RVO patients and 14 normal controls (HCs). We measured and recorded fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (RD) of white matter fibers and classified them through the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and correlation analysis, respectively. Results The mean FA value of white matter in RVO patients is lower than the HCs, and the mean RD value in RVO patients increased, especially in the bilateral posterior thalamic, bilateral sagittal stratum, body of corpus callosum, cingulum, and fornix. The ROC curve of different brain regions showed high accuracy. Moreover, the mean FA and RD values were significantly correlated with visual and psychological disorders. Conclusion TBSS could be regarded as an important method to reveal the alterations of white matter in RVO patients, indicating the underlying neurological mechanism of the RVO.

Abstract
X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP) is a severe form of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a rare, inherited retinal degenerative disorder, that causes blindness. The aim of this literature review was to identify what is currently known about the burden of XLRP. Literature databases were searched for articles describing the clinical, humanistic, or economic burden of XLRP or RP in the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, published in English between 2014 and 2019; gray literature and cited references were reviewed. Literature describing XLRP is limited as this is an ultra-rare condition; findings relating to burden of RP have been reported with interpretation of how burden differs for XLRP. In XLRP, night blindness usually presents in the first decade of life, followed by loss of peripheral and then central vision; legal blindness is reported at a median of 45 years in affected males (vs median 70 years for RP). There is limited evidence of humanistic or economic burden specific to XLRP; one study identified greater vision-related activity limitations in patients with XLRP compared with the wider RP population. Qualitative studies describe increased humanistic burden for people living with RP; difficulty undertaking everyday tasks (driving, hobbies, reading), psychosocial burden and barriers to work and career. People described the emotional impact of dealing with progression of RP, ongoing social and physical challenges, and the impact of RP on relationships. The economic burden of RP is associated with lost productivity, greater healthcare costs and increasing requirement for formal and informal care. In summary, XLRP remains an untreatable condition that can impact people from childhood. The humanistic burden of RP has been shown to increase as the disease progresses; hence, in XLRP the earlier onset and earlier progression to blindness during prime working years may mean a comparatively greater lifetime burden of disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to construct and validate a patient-reported outcome measure for screening and monitoring vision-related anxiety in patients with inherited retinal degenerations. DESIGN Item-response theory and graded response modeling to quantitatively validate questionnaire items generated from qualitative interviews and patient feedback. METHODS Patients at the Kellogg Eye Center (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA) with a clinical diagnosis of an inherited retinal degeneration (n = 128) participated in an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 166 items, 26 of which pertained to concepts of "worry" and "anxiety." The subset of vision-related anxiety questions was analyzed by a graded response model using the Cai Metropolis-Hastings Robbins-Monro algorithm in the R software mirt package. Item reduction was performed based on item fit, item information, and item discriminability. To assess test-retest variability, 25 participants completed the questionnaire a second time 4 to 16 days later. RESULTS The final questionnaire consisted of 14 items divided into 2 unidimensional domains: rod function anxiety and cone function anxiety. The questionnaire exhibited convergent validity with the Patient Health Questionnaire for symptoms of depression and anxiety. This vision-related anxiety questionnaire has high marginal reliability (0.81 for rod-function anxiety, 0.83 for cone-function anxiety) and exhibits minimal test-retest variability (ρ = 0.81 [0.64-0.91] for rod-function anxiety and ρ = 0.83 [0.68-0.92] for cone-function anxiety). CONCLUSIONS The Michigan Vision-Related Anxiety Questionnaire is a psychometrically validated 14-item patient-reported outcome measure to be used as a psychosocial screening and monitoring tool for patients with inherited retinal degenerations. It can be used in therapeutic clinical trials for measuring the benefit of an investigational therapy on a patient's vision-related anxiety.

Abstract
Background Existing patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures may not be relevant to the full range of functional and vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) concerns of individuals with vision impairment due to severe peripheral field loss (PFL). Measurement of VR-QOL in severe PFL is important in order to determine the effectiveness of vision rehabilitation interventions for this population. The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact of severe PFL due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and glaucoma on VR-QOL as the initial phase in the development of a novel PRO measure. Methods Individuals with severe PFL due to RP or glaucoma were recruited from the Kellogg Eye Center and the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Participants completed semi-structured qualitative interviews, the Impact of Vision Impairment (IVI) questionnaire and the RAND 36-Item Health Survey. Interviews were analyzed by two coders using thematic analysis. A matrix analysis was conducted to compare VR-QOL by cause of severe PFL. Sample size was determined by thematic saturation. Results The study included 37 participants (19 RP, 18 glaucoma). Median best-corrected visual acuity for those with RP and glaucoma was 20/40 and 20/27.5, while Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity was 1.2 log contrast sensitivity (logCS) and 1.1 logCS, respectively. Median domain scores on the IVI (reading, mobility, well-being) ranged from a low of − 0.2 to a high of 0.7 logits in those with RP and from 0.5 to 1.2 logits in those with glaucoma. Qualitative interviews identified six VR-QOL themes relevant across participants with both RP and glaucoma, including activity limitations, driving, emotional well-being, reading, mobility, and social function. VR-QOL concerns were largely consistent among those with severe PFL due to RP and glaucoma. These overarching themes contained content relevant to specific challenges related to severe PFL. Conclusions There are commonly occurring VR-QOL concerns among individuals with severe PFL due to RP and glaucoma. The outlined themes will serve as the basis for development of the Low Vision Severely Constricted Peripheral Eyesight (LV-SCOPE) Questionnaire. Abstract
PURPOSE Choroideremia is an incurable, X-linked, recessive retinal dystrophy caused by loss of function mutations in the CHM gene. It is estimated to affect approximately 1 in 50,000 male patients. It is characterized by progressive degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium, choroid, and photoreceptors, resulting in visual impairment and blindness. There is an unmet need in choroideremia, because currently, there are no approved treatments available for patients with the disease. METHODS We review the patient journey, societal impact, and emerging treatments for patients with choroideremia. RESULTS Its relative rarity and similarities with other retinal diseases in early years mean that diagnosis of choroideremia can often be delayed. Furthermore, its impact on affected individuals, and wider society, is also likely underestimated. AAV2-mediated gene therapy is an investigational treatment that aims to replace the faulty CHM gene. Early-phase studies reported potentially important visual acuity gains and maintenance of vision in some patients, and a large Phase 3 program is now underway. CONCLUSION Choroideremia is a disease with a significant unmet need. Interventions that can treat progression of the disease and improve visual and functional outcomes have the potential to reduce health care costs and enhance patient quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report baseline visual fields in the Rate of Progression in USH2A-related Retinal Degeneration (RUSH2A) study. DESIGN Cross-sectional study within a natural history study. METHODS Setting: multicenter, international. STUDY POPULATION Usher syndrome type 2 (USH2) (n = 80) or autosomal recessive nonsyndromic retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP) (n = 47) associated with biallelic disease-causing sequence variants in USH2A. OBSERVATION PROCEDURES Repeatability of full-field static perimetry (SP) and between-eye symmetry of kinetic perimetry (KP) were evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). The association of demographic and clinical characteristics with total hill of vision (VTOT) was assessed with general linear models. Associations between VTOT and other functional and morphologic measures were assessed using Spearman correlation coefficients and t tests. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES VTOT (SP) and III4e isopter area (KP). RESULTS USH2 participants had more severe visual field loss than ARRP participants (P < .001, adjusting for disease duration, age of enrollment). Mean VTOT measures among 3 repeat tests were 32.7 ± 24.1, 31.2 ± 23.4, and 31.7 ± 23.9 decibel-steradians (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.96). Better VA, greater photopic ERG 30-Hz flicker amplitudes, higher mean microperimetry sensitivity, higher central subfield thickness, absence of macular cysts, and higher III4e seeing area were associated with higher VTOT (all r > .48; P < .05). Mean III4e isopter areas for left (4561 ± 4426 squared degrees) and right eyes (4215 ± 4300 squared degrees) were concordant (ICC = 0.94). CONCLUSIONS USH2 participants had more visual field loss than participants with USH2A-related ARRP, adjusting for duration of disease and age of enrollment. VTOT was repeatable and correlated with other functional and structural metrics, suggesting it may be a good summary measure of disease severity in patients with USH2A-related retinal degeneration.

Abstract
Purpose There have been few systematic reports of vision-related activity limitations of people with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We report a merging of data from the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) obtained in five previous studies. We asked whether the Vision Function Scale (VFS; Pesudovs et al., 2010) which was developed for cataract patients would apply in this new population (condition). Methods Five hundred ninety-four individuals completed a total of 1753 questionnaires, with 209 participants providing responses over at least 4 years. Rasch analysis showed that the 15-item VFS was poorly targeted. A new instrument created by adding four driving-related items to the VFS had better targeting. As an indirect validation, VFS-plus person scores were compared to visual field area measured using a Goldmann perimeter, to the summed score for the combined 30–2 and 30/60–1 Humphrey Field Analyzer programs (HFA), to 30-Hz full-field cone electroretinogram (ERG) amplitude, and to ETDRS visual acuity. Changes in VFS-plus person scores with age and between four common heredity groups were also examined. Results The Rasch model of responses to the 19 VFS-plus items had person and item separation of 2.66 and 24.43 respectively. The VFS-plus person scores were related to each vision measure (p < 0.001). Over a five-year period, there was a reduction in person scores of 0.5 logits (p < 0.001). Person scores fell by an average of 0.34 logits per decade (p < 0.0001). Participants with an X-linked hereditary pattern had, on average, lower person scores (p < 0.001). Conclusions The VFS-plus instrument quantified a highly-significant annual reduction in perceived vision-related ability over a five-year period. The outcome was consistent with clinical measures of vision, and detected lower perceived vision-related ability in participants with X-linked disease. It may be of use in future studies, but this needs to be tested in a representative population sample.

Abstract
Purpose We evaluate the effect of choroidal vessel density on the residual length of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) and visual function in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods Fifty-three patients with RP (n = 101 eyes) and 53 normal participants (n = 76 eyes) were enrolled in this study. Patients with RP were assigned to three groups according to their best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). All patients underwent ophthalmologic examinations, including BCVA, fundus examination performed with a slit-lamp using an indirect 90 diopter (D) lens, OCTA, full-field electroretinogram (ERG), and visual field. The choroidal vessel density in the choriocapillaris-Sattler's layer (DC-S), Haller's layer (DH), horizontal length of the ellipsoid (HEL), and vertical length of the ellipsoid (VEL) were assessed using OCTA and Adobe Photoshop CS3 extended software. Results A significantly increasing impairment of choroidal vessel density (DC-S and DH) was characterized in the RP groups compared to those of the controls (P < 0.05 for all). The magnitude of the reduction in the DC-S and DH was much easier to identify for more severely impaired BCVA in the RP groups (P < 0.05 for all). The DC-S had the strongest correlation with the HEL, VEL, BCVA, visual field, and b-wave amplitude (r = 0.735, r = 0.753, r = -0.843, r = 0.579, and r = 0.671, respectively). Conclusions Using noninvasive OCTA, choroidal microcirculation, especially in the small/middle choroidal vessel layers, was a prominent factor affecting the EZ, visual acuity, visual field, and recordable ERG b-wave amplitude of patients with RP. This may provide new insights into the progress mechanism and treatment of RP.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors related to anxiety and depression in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The status of anxiety and depression was determined in RP patients with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire which consisted of subscales for HADS-anxiety (HADS-A) and HADS-depression (HADS-D). The vision-specific quality of life (VSQOL) was assessed with the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI-VFQ25). The correlations between the HADS-A or HADS-D scores and vision-related clinical parameters such as the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), Functional Acuity Score, Functional Field Score, Functional Vision Score, the NEI- VFQ25 subscale score were determined. The socioeconomic status, such as the work status and membership in the RP society, was investigated to determine the factors related to the HADS-A and HADS-D scores. One hundred and twelve RP patients (46 men and 66 women) with mean age of 60.7±15.4 (standard deviation) years were studied. The HADS-A score was not significantly correlated with any visual functions but was significantly correlated with the general health condition (r = -0.34, P<0.001) and the role limitation (r = -0.20, P = 0.03) of the NEI-VFQ25 subscale. The HADS-D score was significantly correlated with all the visual functions (r = -0.38 to 0.29, P<0.001), the NEI-VFQ25 subscale score (r = - 0.58 to -0.33, P<0.001) by Spearman’s correlations. The HADS-A score was significantly higher in the members of the RP society than in non-members (P = 0.013). The mean HADS-D score of employed individuals was significantly lower than that of unemployed ones (P = 0.001) by the Mann-Whitney U test. The results indicate that visual function impairments and vision-related quality of life are associated with a depressive state, and the general health condition is related to anxiety in RP patients. Being employed may be strongly correlated with the degree of depression in RP patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate longitudinal vision-related quality of life (VRQoL) in patients with noninfectious uveitis. DESIGN Cohort study using randomized controlled trial data. PARTICIPANTS Patients with active or recently active intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, or panuveitis enrolled in the Multicenter Steroid Treatment Trial and Follow-up Study. METHODS Data from the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) for the first 3 years after randomization were evaluated semiannually. Analyses were stratified by assigned treatment (129 implants vs. 126 systemic therapies) because of substantial differences in the trajectories of VRQoL. The impact of baseline measurements of visual function (visual acuity and visual field), demographics, and disease characteristics was assessed using generalized estimating equations. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome was the NEI-VFQ-25 composite score over 3 years after randomization. RESULTS Individuals in both treatment groups showed similar improvement in NEI-VFQ-25 scores after 3 years of follow-up (implant: 11.9 points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 8.6-15.2; P < 0.001; systemic: 9.0 points; 95% CI, 5.6-12.3; P < 0.001; P = 0.21 for interaction). Individuals in the implant group showed a substantial improvement during the first 6 months followed by stable scores, whereas individuals in the systemic group showed a steady improvement over the course of follow-up. Worse initial visual acuity and visual fields were associated with lower initial NEI-VFQ-25 scores for both treatment groups. In the systemic group, these differences were maintained throughout follow-up. In the implant group, individuals with initial visual acuity worse than 20/40 showed additional improvement in NEI-VFQ-25 score to come within -7 points (95% CI, -15.0 to 0.9) of those with visual acuity 20/40 or better initially, a clinically meaningful but not statistically significant difference (P = 0.081). Results based on sensitivity analyses showed similar patterns. CONCLUSIONS Both treatment groups demonstrated significant improvements in NEI-VFQ-25 scores; however, the improvement was immediate for the implant group as opposed to gradual for the systemic group. Poorer visual function was associated significantly with initial differences in NEI-VFQ-25 scores. However, only individuals in the implant group with poor visual acuity were able to overcome their initial deficits by the end of 3 years.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the relationship between visual function and quality of life, education, mental health, and employment among young adults with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Inclusion of 148 patients (mean age 38.2 ± 7.1 years) diagnosed with RP, living in France. Quality of life was assessed using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25), mental state with the Hospital and Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and employment with a specifically designed questionnaire. RESULTS Limited visual impairment was noted in 22.3%, low vision in 29.7%, and legal blindness in 48.0%. There was a correlation between quality-of-life scores and residual visual field (P < .0001). Mental health scores were suggestive of anxiety in 36.5% and depression in 15.5%. The rates did not increase with disability level (P = .738, P = .134). The percentage of subjects with higher education did not significantly decrease with disability level (P = .113). The employment rate did not significantly decrease with disability level (P = .276). It was lower in subjects reporting depression (P = .0414). Self-rated impact of RP on employment increased with disability level (P = .02642). CONCLUSIONS Our results differ from previous results showing lower education rates and employment rates in young adults with RP. Further research is warranted focusing on the impact of mental health, education, workplace conditions, and employment aids on employment rate vs age- and education-matched normally sighted controls to guide visual disability strategies in RP.

Abstract
Purpose To understand the emotional difficulties associated with living with the ocular condition Retinitis Pigmentosa, and to examine the functioning of a self-report instrument used to assess this construct. Methods The difficulty of goals and tasks in the emotional health domain of the Dutch ICF Activity Inventory were rated by 166 people with Retinitis Pigmentosa in a cross-sectional study. Demographic factors were also assessed. Results Responses to the 23 emotional health tasks were Rasch analysed and could be used to form either one 20 item overview scale with some multidimensionality, or three unidimensional subscales addressing feelings (4 items), communicating visual loss (5 items) and fatigue (7 items). The most difficult individual tasks related to communicating visual loss to other people, and dealing with feelings such as frustration, anxiety and stress. The use of mobility aids and female gender were associated with increased difficulty with emotional health, explaining 19% of the variance in the overview scale. Conclusions The emotional health domain of the Dutch ICF Activity Inventory is a valid tool to assess emotional difficulties arising from visual loss. Interventions to aid people with Retinitis Pigmentosa deal with emotional difficulties should particularly address communicating vision loss effectively to others and coping with negative feelings.
