Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is a common disease that poses a significant threat to human health. Approximately one-third of stroke patients experience poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), which severely impacts their quality of life and survival time. Although the prevalence and risk factors for PSCI have been widely reported, these results have not been synthesized. OBJECTIVES This systematic review was conducted to explore the prevalence and risk factors of PSCI. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were comprehensively searched for studies exploring the prevalence and risk factors of PSCI from inception to July 5, 2022. RESULTS A total of 49 articles were included for meta-analysis. It was found that the combined prevalence of PSCI was 39%-47%. Risk factors for PSCI include female gender, age, education level less than 7 years, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, smoking, drinking, hypertension, coronary artery disease, carotid artery plaque, admission NIHSS score ≥ 5, unemployment, and homocysteine. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review has revealed a combined prevalence of PSCI is ranging from 39% to 47% and identified several risk factors for PSCI. These findings indicate a high incidence of the condition and underscore the need for increased public awareness. Future investigations should prioritize the identification of PSCI risk factors, providing a theoretical basis for nursing professionals to effectively manage and treat PSCI patients.

Abstract
Background The pathogenesis of cognitive impairment (CI) in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients is still unclear and numerous influence factors could affect the CI status. The current studies suggest that sleep quality and behavior pattern are significant influence factors associated with CAD susceptibility. Methods A total of 223 participants including 90 CAD patients with CI and 133 controls were enrolled into this retrospective study. Demographic information, laboratory test results, clinical diagnostic data, and questionnaire survey were collected to recognize the influencing factors of CI in CAD patients. Appropriate statistical methods are used to analyze these collected data. Results Univariate analysis results of demographic information, laboratory test results, and questionnaire survey data revealed that the differences in fatigue symptom, age, HDL, TG, and sleep quality were statistically significant (p = 0.006, p = 0.000, p = 0.019, p = 0.028, and p = 0.037, respectively). Logistic regression analysis showed that age, fatigue, and sleep quality were the influence factors for CI in CAD population (p = 0.000, p = 0.035, and p = 0.017). Conclusions Sleep quality, fatigue, and age were associated with the increased susceptibility of CI in CAD patients. Both CI state and its related factors were involved in the pathological process of CAD, these findings could offer additional information for the prevention and control of CAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing interest in finding methods to enhance cognitive function and comprehend the neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie these improvements. It is assumed that non-pharmacological interventions have better results in cognitive recovery. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of multi-task cognitive training (MTT) on electroencephalographic (EEG) changes and markers of the neurovascular unit in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS This prospective cohort study involved 62 CABG patients aged 45-75 years, 30 of whom underwent a 5-7-day MTT course. The groups of patients were comparable with respect to baseline clinical and anamnestic characteristics. An EEG study was performed before surgery and 11-12 days after CABG. Markers of the neurovascular unit (S100β, NSE, and BDNF) were examined at three time points: before surgery, within the first 24 h after surgery, and 11-12 days after CABG. RESULTS Patients without training demonstrated higher relative theta power changes compared to the MTT patients. The course of MTT was associated with low plasma S100β concentration but high BDNF levels at the end of the training course. CONCLUSIONS The theta activity changes and the markers of the neurovascular unit (S100β, BDNF) indicated that the severity of brain damage in cardiac surgery patients after a short course of MTT was slightly reduced. Electrical brain activity indicators and vascular markers can be informative for monitoring the process of cognitive rehabilitation in cardiac surgery patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare biomarkers of neurovascular unit (NVU) - S100β, NSE, BDNF and indicators of the brain electrical activity in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) depending on the use of different versions of multi-tasking cognitive training (CT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 89 people, of whom 47 completed the CTI (postural and three cognitive tasks (counting backwards, verbal fluency and the open-ended task «Unusual use of an ordinary object») and 42 patients, who underwent CTII (visuomotor reaction and the same cognitive tasks) in the early postoperative CABG period. The patients of both groups underwent complex testing of psychomotor, executive functions, attention, short-term memory and EEG study in the perioperative period of CABG. Concentrations of NVU markers in peripheral blood serum were also analyzed. RESULTS The highest values of S100β protein concentration in both patients with CTI and CTII were observed on the 1st-2nd days after CABG, followed by a significant decrease on the 10th-12th days to preoperative values only in the CTII group. Also, during CTI, low concentrations of S100β and NSE protein were associated with higher indicators of cognitive status, such as short-term memory and general integral index. In patients with CTI, the concentration of BDNF on days 10-12 of CABG was significantly higher compared to patients with CTII, and its higher levels were associated with higher levels of attention. Only if the training was successful, the patients with CTI had greater preoperative levels of EEG alpha-1 and alpha-2 activity compared to patients with CTII. CONCLUSION The version of multitasking CT using the postural motor component more actively triggered the processes of neuroplasticity due to the expression of BDNF and its success was due to the greater presence of alpha-activity in the preoperative period of CABG. Further research is needed to study the neurophysiological mechanisms of recovery of cognitive functions after cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Background On-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is associated with a high risk of neurological complications in patients with severe carotid stenosis. Moreover, early postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) incidence remains high in patients undergoing simultaneous coronary and carotid surgery. Recent studies have shown that even moderate carotid stenosis (≥50%) is associated with postoperative cognitive decline after CABG. Data on brain health in the postoperative period of simultaneous coronary and carotid surgery are limited. Objectives This study aimed to analyze early postoperative changes in the cognitive function and patterns of brain electrical activity in patients after simultaneous coronary and carotid artery revascularization. Materials and methods Between January 2017 and December 2020, consecutive patients were assigned to on-pump CABG with or without carotid endarterectomy (CEA) according to clinical indications. An extended neuropsychological and electroencephalographic (EEG) assessment was performed before surgery and at 7-10 days after CABG or CABG + CEA. Results A total of 100 patients were included [median age 59 (55; 65), 95% men, MMSE 27 (26; 28)], and among these, 46 underwent CEA. POCD was diagnosed in 29 (63.0%) patients with CABG + CEA and in 32 (59.0%) patients with isolated CABG. All patients presented with a postoperative theta power increase. However, patients with CABG + right-sided CEA demonstrated the most pronounced theta power increase compared to patients with isolated CABG. Conclusion The findings of our study show that patients with CABG + CEA and isolated CABG have comparable POCD incidence; however, patients with CABG + right-sided CEA presented with lower brain activity.

Abstract
Background. This work is a review of preclinical and clinical studies of the role of telomeres and telomerase in the development and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD). Materials and methods. A search for full-text publications (articles, reviews, meta-analyses, Cochrane reviews, and clinical cases) in English and Russian was carried out in the databases PubMed, Oxford University Press, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer, and E-library electronic library using keywords and their combinations. The search depth is 11 years (2010–2021). Results. The review suggests that the relative leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with the development of socially significant and widespread cardiovascular diseases such as CHD and essential hypertension. At the same time, the interests of researchers are mainly focused on the study of the relative LTL in CHD. Conclusions. Despite the scientific and clinical significance of the analyzed studies of the relative length of human LTL as a biological marker of cardiovascular diseases, their implementation in real clinical practice is difficult due to differences in the design and methodology of the analyzed studies, as well as differences in the samples by gender, age, race, and ethnicity. The authors believe that clinical studies of the role of the relative length of leukocyte telomeres in adult patients with coronary heart disease are the most promising and require large multicenter studies with a unified design and methodology.

Abstract
Both cognitive impairment and cardiovascular diseases have a high incidence in the elderly population, increasing the burden of care and reducing the quality of life. Studies have suggested that cognitive impairment interacts with cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, abnormal blood pressure, heart failure, and arrhythmia. On one hand, cognitive impairment in the elderly influences the progression and self-management of cardiovascular diseases and increases the risk of cardiovascular-related adverse events. On the other hand, coronary heart disease, heart failure, higher blood pressure variability, orthostatic hypotension, and atrial fibrillation may aggravate cognitive impairment. The role of blood pressure levels on cognition remains controversial. Several shared biological pathways have been proposed as the underlying mechanism for the association. Cardiovascular diseases may lead to cognitive decline even dementia through cerebral perfusion damage, brain structural changes, inflammation, β-amyloid deposition, and neuroendocrine disorders. It is of great significance to study the interaction and put forward effective interventions in an overall perspective to reduce care burden and improve the quality of life of the elderly patients.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a short course of physical prehabilitation on neurophysiological functioning and markers of the neurovascular unit in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We performed a prospective randomized study involving 97 male CABG patients aged 45–70 years, 47 of whom underwent a 5–7-day preoperative course of aerobic physical training (PhT). Both groups of patients were comparable with respect to baseline clinical and anamnestic characteristics. An extended neuropsychological and electroencephalographic (EEG) study was performed before surgery and at 7–10 days after CABG. Markers of the neurovascular unit [S100β, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)] were examined as metabolic correlations of early postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) at three time points: before surgery, within the first 24 h after surgery, and 7–10 days after CABG. POCD developed in 58% of patients who underwent preoperative PhT, and in 79.5% of patients who did not undergo training, 7–10 days after CABG. Patients without prehabilitation demonstrated a higher percentage of theta1 power increase in the relative change values as compared to the PhT patients (p = 0.015). The short preoperative course of PhT was associated with low plasma S100β concentration, but high BDNF levels in the postoperative period. Patients who underwent a short preoperative course of PhT had better cognitive and electrical cortical activity indicators. Markers of the neurovascular unit indicated lower perioperative brain injury after CABG in those who underwent training. A short course of PhT before CABG can decrease the brain’s susceptibility to ischemia and reduce the severity of cognitive impairments in cardiac surgery patients. Electrical brain activity indicators and neurovascular markers, such as S100β and BDNF, can be informative for the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Abstract
Vascular contribution to cognitive impairment (VCI) and dementia is related to etiologies that may affect the neurophysiological mechanisms regulating brain arousal and generating electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. A multidisciplinary expert panel reviewed the clinical literature and reached consensus about the EEG measures consistently found as abnormal in VCI patients with dementia. As compared to cognitively unimpaired individuals, those VCI patients showed (1) smaller amplitude of resting state alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms dominant in posterior regions; (2) widespread increases in amplitude of delta (< 4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) rhythms; and (3) delayed N200/P300 peak latencies in averaged event-related potentials, especially during the detection of auditory rare target stimuli requiring participants' responses in "oddball" paradigms. The expert panel formulated the following recommendations: (1) the above EEG measures are not specific for VCI and should not be used for its diagnosis; (2) they may be considered as "neural synchronization" biomarkers to enlighten the relationships between features of the VCI-related cerebrovascular lesions and abnormalities in neurophysiological brain mechanisms; and (3) they may be tested in future clinical trials as prognostic biomarkers and endpoints of interventions aimed at normalizing background brain excitability and vigilance in wakefulness.
