Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale for Adults

PURPOSE

Listening-related fatigue (LRF) is a prominent topic of research interest. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the 40-item Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale for Adults (TR-VFS-A-40).

METHOD

This study included 317 adults with no hearing loss and 260 adults with hearing loss in the study group, totaling 577 adults aged 18-75 years. While 31 adults in the study group did not use any hearing technology, there were 96 hearing aid users and 123 cochlear implant (CI) users. A subset of 80 CI users completed the TR-VFS-A-40 a second time, 2 weeks later, to assess test-retest reliability. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to assess test-retest reliability. Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate internal consistency. To examine construct validity, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed. For concurrent validity analysis, the Checklist Individual Strength (CIS) and TR-VFS-A-40 scores were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test.

RESULTS

Cronbach's alpha values were excellent for the total scale of .987 and the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social subscales (.953, .954, .955, and .946, respectively). Analyses of concurrent validity revealed strong and significant correlations between CIS and TR-VFS-A-40 scores, indicating a good concurrent validity. The CFA determined that the construct validity of the TR-VFS-A-40 was satisfactory.

CONCLUSION

The TR-VFS-A-40 is a valid and reliable measure of LRF.

Quality of work life for health professions in Colombia's adult critical care: An integrative analysis

BACKGROUND

Health professionals in Colombian and many parts of the world, in some cases, work in precarious conditions and intend to migrate to other countries in search of better living conditions for themselves and their families, which results in inadequate distribution worldwide and in the quality of care throughout the health system, which can ultimately influence the quality of life of patients in their health-disease processes.

PURPOSE

Describe in depth what quality of life at work is like for the health workforce in adult critical care (ACC).

METHODS

This is an investigation of convergent parallel mixed methods approach that are integrated by means of a matrix in terms of convergence, divergence, and complementarity. Two methods are used: a transversal analytical method in which three instruments were applied to 209 participants to study the relationship between Quality of Life at Work, exposure to psychosocial risks, compassion fatigue and the intention to rotate; other than from the experiences narrated by 10 Human Talent in Health explore organizational practices in critical care.

RESULTS

The dimension of quality of work life with the greatest dissatisfied was the management of free time (77%), the most compromised psychosocial risk was the pace of work (84%). They have high compassion satisfaction (67%) and there is an intention to migrate to another country (66%). The narrative results in discrimination/harassment as normalized practices and faceless spirituality. The integration of mixed methods shows convergence between the use of the instrument that measures quality of life at work and the narratives of the participants, complementarity with the other instruments, and divergence regarding the intention to rotate to another health institution.

CONCLUSION

The positive trend that converges with the two approaches is that of safety at work and well-being achieved through work, embodied in the constant updating of technology and care protocols, experience time, balance between salary and work effort, staffing and supplies, and disconnection with work.

Sleep Quality as a Mediator of Burnout, Stress and Multisite Musculoskeletal Pain in Healthcare Workers: A Longitudinal Study

This study aimed to verify whether sleep quality is a mediator of the relationship between burnout, stress and multisite pain in healthcare workers in a longitudinal study with 12 months of follow-up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online questionnaires were used for data collection. The sociodemographic questionnaire contained personal and occupational data. The short version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ II-Br) was used to assess burnout and stress. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-Br) assessed sleep quality over one month. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) aimed to identify the presence of multisite musculoskeletal pain in the last 12 months and the last 7 days. Mediation analysis was used to verify whether the effect of the predictor variables (burnout and stress) on the dependent variable (number of pain sites in the last 12 months and 7 days) was due to an intervening variable (sleep quality). Stress and burnout were associated with multisite pain in healthcare workers in the last 12 months and the last 7 days. Sleep quality was a significant mediator of this association in the last 12 months, indicating that some of the association between burnout, stress and multisite pain can be explained by poor sleep quality. Thus, a comprehensive approach to long-term multisite pain should consider psychosocial aspects such as burnout, stress and sleep quality.

Poor Health Conditions among Brazilian Healthcare Workers: The Study Design and Baseline Characteristics of the HEROES Cohort

This study was conducted to describe the health conditions (the psychosocial aspects, sleep quality, and musculoskeletal symptoms) among Brazilian healthcare workers in the context of the pandemic. Workers answered an online questionnaire, including the short version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ II), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The most unfavourable psychosocial factors were work pace (61%; 95% CI: 52–69%), emotional work demands (75%; 95% CI: 67–82%), predictability (47%; 95% CI: 39–56%), work-family conflict (55%; 95% CI: 46–64%), burnout (86%; 95% CI: 78–91%), and stress (81%; 95% CI: 73–87%). Most workers (74%; 95% CI: 66–81%) were classified as poor sleepers. Musculoskeletal symptoms were frequent in the neck (64%; 95% CI: 55–72%), shoulders (62%; 95% CI: 54–70%), upper back (58%; 95% CI: 50–67%), and lower back (61%; 95% CI: 52–69%). Depressive symptoms were also highly prevalent (mild: 22%; 95% CI: 15–30%, moderate: 16%; 95% CI: 11–23%, severe: 8%; 95% CI: 4–14%). Most healthcare workers experience unfavourable psychosocial factors, poor sleep quality, as well as musculoskeletal and depressive symptoms. These findings underscore the urgent need to acknowledge and address psychological and physical distress to improve the personal and professional well-being of this population.

Occupational profile, psychosocial aspects and work ability of Brazilian workers during COVID-19 pandemic: IMPPAC cohort

Background

The IMPPAC cohort (Implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychosocial aspects and work ability among Brazilian workers) seeks to understand the impact of the pandemic on Brazilian workers. This article describes the occupational profile, psychosocial aspects, and work ability determined during the baseline and follow-up measurements of the cohort.

Methods

Workers were invited to participate through media advertisements, social networks, and e-mails. From June to September 2020, 1211 workers were included in the cohort. Follow-up measurements finished on October 2021 with 633 workers. Data were collected through standardized questionnaires using Google Forms. Psychosocial aspects were assessed using the COPSOQ II-Br. Work ability was assessed using the Work Ability Index (WAI).

Results

At baseline and follow-up, high proportion of workers were in the risk zone with regard to work pace, emotional work demands, influence on work, work–family conflict, burnout, and stress. Approximately 75% of the workers reported good to excellent work ability at baseline and follow-up.

Conclusion

The occupational profile, psychosocial aspects, and work ability of Brazilian workers from the IMPPAC cohort were described. Psychosocial aspects and WAI were similar at baseline and follow-up.
