Assimilation of NH₄Br in Polyvinyl Alcohol/Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) Polymer Blend-Based Electrolyte and Its Effect on Ionic Conductivity

Structural, Optical, and Electrical Investigations of Nd2O3-Doped PVA/PVP Polymeric Composites for Electronic and Optoelectronic Applications

In this present work, a PVA/PVP-blend polymer was doped with various concentrations of neodymium oxide (PB-Nd+3) composite films using the solution casting technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to investigate the composite structure and proved the semi-crystallinity of the pure PVA/PVP polymeric sample. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, a chemical-structure tool, illustrated a significant interaction of PB-Nd+3 elements in the polymeric blends. The transmittance data reached 88% for the host PVA/PVP blend matrix, while the absorption increased with the high dopant quantities of PB-Nd+3. The absorption spectrum fitting (ASF) and Tauc’s models optically estimated the direct and indirect energy bandgaps, where the addition of PB-Nd+3 concentrations resulted in a drop in the energy bandgap values. A remarkably higher quantity of Urbach energy for the investigated composite films was observed with the increase in the PB-Nd+3 contents. Moreover, seven theoretical equations were utilized, in this current research, to indicate the correlation between the refractive index and the energy bandgap. The indirect bandgaps for the proposed composites were evaluated to be in the range of 5.6 eV to 4.82 eV; in addition, the direct energy gaps decreased from 6.09 eV to 5.83 eV as the dopant ratios increased. The nonlinear optical parameters were influenced by adding PB-Nd+3, which tended to increase the values. The PB-Nd+3 composite films enhanced the optical limiting effects and offered a cut-off laser in the visible region. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity of the blend polymer embedded in PB-Nd+3 increased in the low-frequency region. The AC conductivity and nonlinear I-V characteristics were augmented with the doping level of PB-Nd+3 contents in the blended PVA/PVP polymer. The outstanding findings regarding the structural, electrical, optical, and dielectric performance of the proposed materials show that the new PB-Nd+3-doped PVA/PVP composite polymeric films are applicable in optoelectronics, cut-off lasers, and electrical devices.

Impact of Placement of Aminopropyl Triethoxy Silane and Tetraethoxy Silicate on SSBR Chains: Analysis of Rolling Resistance, Wet Grip, and Abrasion Resistance

Solution styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and silica filler have attracted a significant attention because of their superior properties in cured rubber mixtures used in automobile tire industry. One of the challenges ahead of using these materials is the hard dispersion of silica with its polar surface in SBR nonpolar rubber. In the present study, the synthesis of styrene-butadiene rubber by solution polymerization method with polymer chain modification using copolymer functionalization was performed. For this purpose, two materials, namely, aminopropyl triethoxy silane (APTES) and tetraethoxy silicate (TEOS), were employed to improve the silica dispersion in the mixture. The results of postsynthesis structural tests show the successful placement of functional groups on the polymer chain. The results of mechanical, dynamic, and imaging analyses of the cured mixtures showed an improvement in the APTES-containing samples rolling resistance, wet surface grip, and abrasion resistance by 39%, 18%, and 17%, respectively, due to having stronger physical and chemical bonds with silica and also the usage of end agents in the polymer chain. The samples containing TEOS had also better results than the conventional SBR rubber. In addition, a sample containing emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber was prepared to compare its properties with those of the solution SBR. Another SBR sample containing silane coupling agent was also prepared to investigate its performance compared to that of the agents placed on the polymer chain. The abrasion resistance, rolling resistance, and wet grip of the coupling agent containing sample showed 2%, 10%, and 30% improvement, respectively, which were very close to those of the sample containing the TEOS agent. In this work, various techniques including, rheometry, wear, rolling, hardness, bound rubber content, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were employed to analyze the synthesized rubber.

Kinetics of methylene blue dye adsorptive removal using halloysite nanocomposite hydrogels

In the present work, halloysite nano-clay (HNTs) based hydrogel was fabricated and their efficiency for the removal of methylene blue dye was studied. The hydrogel films were prepared with varying amount of halloysite nano-clay via facile solution casting method. Effect of halloysite clay on adsorption performance of composite was investigated. The hydrophobic thermoplastic synthetic polymer, polylactic acid (PLA) was blended with hydrophilic polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and HNTs to synthesize hydrogels. Swelling behavior and antimicrobial efficiency was also evaluated. The halloysite incorporating films showed excellent antibacterial activity. Swelling capacity of hydrogel with increased halloysite content was reduced due to increased crosslinking among polymer chains. Halloysite incorporated hydrogel exhibited higher adsorption ability as compared to film comprising of only PVA and PLA and dye removal followed pseudo first order kinetics. Film with 0.03 g HNTs rapidly attained adsorption-desorption equilibria and removed the dye completely within 30 min. Results confirmed that synthesized film could be potentially used for the removal of cationic dye and fabricated hydrogel film have promising potential for wastewater treatment since a higher adsorption capacity was observed for halloysite nano-clay incorporated hydrogel.

Cephradine drug release using electrospun chitosan nanofibers incorporated with halloysite nanoclay

The chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/halloysite nanoclay (CS/PVA/HNC) loaded with cephradine drug electrospun nanofibers (NFs) were fabricated and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. FTIR analysis confirmed the hydrogen bonding between the polymer chain and the developed siloxane linkages. SEM analysis revealed the formation of uniform NFs having beads free and smooth surface with an average diameter in 50–200 nm range. The thermal stability of the NFs was increased by increasing the HNC concentration. The antimicrobial activity was examined against Escherichia  coli and staphylococcus strains and the NFs revealed auspicious antimicrobial potential. The drug release was studied at pH 7.4 (in PBS) at 37 °C. The drug release analysis showed that 90% of the drug was released from NFs in 2 h and 40 min. Hence, the prepared NFs could be used as a potential drug carrier and release in a control manner for biomedical application.

Modifying Precursor Solutions to Obtain Screen-Printable Inks for Tungsten Oxides Electrochromic Film Preparation

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is used to prepare the important electrochromic layer of the electrochromic device as a wide bandgap semiconductor material. In this study, WO3 electrochromic film was successfully prepared by screen printing. To modify the thixotropy and wettability of the ink, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 2-perfluoroalkyl ethanol (FSO) were added in the ammonium meta-tungstate (AMT) solution. We found that the PVA additive could improve the dynamic viscosity of the solution and modify the uniformity of the film. 2-Perfluoroalkyl ethanol (FSO) could lower the surface tension and increase the wettability of the AMT solution on the substrate. By observing the morphology of the printed films, the ink formulas for screen printing were selected. We found the annealing process could help remove PVA. Through characterization of electrochromic performance, it was found that the best performing device had 42.57% modulation and 93.25 cm2·C−1 coloration efficiency (CE) for 600 nm light. This study showed great potential in the preparation of WO3 electrochromic devices by a low-cost screen-printing method.

Synergistic influence of mesoporous spinel nickel ferrite on the electrocatalytic activity of nano-structured palladium

Structure and surface area are critical factors for catalysts in fuel cells. Hence, a spinel nickel ferrite mesoporous (SNFM) is prepared via the solution combustion technique, an efficient and one-step synthesis. Dynamic X-ray analysis has clarified the structural properties of SNFM. The grain size of SNFM is determined to be ∼11.6 nm. The specific surface area (87.69 m2. g-1) of SNFM is obtained via the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. The Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size distributions revealed that the size of the mesopores in as-synthesized SNFM mainly falls in the size range of 2-16 nm. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed the regularities involved during porous-structure formation. SNFM is employed as the support for nano-structured palladium (PdNS). Field emission scanning electron microscope studies of PdNS-SNFM showed the deposition of PdNS in cavities and on/in the pores of SNFM. The electrochemical surface area obtained for PdNS-SNFM is about 27 times larger than that of PdNS via cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical studies are utilized to study the features and catalytic performance of PdNS-SNFM in the electro-oxidation of diverse small organic fuels, whereas the electrooxidation of diethylene glycol is reported for first-time.

Novel chitosan/guar gum/PVA hydrogel: Preparation, characterization and antimicrobial activity evaluation

A series of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/guar gum (CS/PVA/GG) blends were prepared. The synthesis was carried out using different combinations of CS and GG, while keeping PVA constant by casting solution method. The effect of formaldehyde as a crosslinking agent was also evaluated. The blends were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Additionally, the swelling ratio along with antimicrobial activity was also studied. SEM exhibited the phenomenon that surface morphology was mostly affected by blend ratios and cross-linker. The XRD shows the crystalline structure of blends. The FTIR confirmed the strong intermolecular bonding between polymers. Swelling exhibits that cross-linking affects the hydrophilicity of blends and swelling was excellent for S4 blend. The prepared blends showed promising antimicrobial activity against P. multocida, S. aureus, E. coli, and B. subtilis bacterial agents. The data concludes that GG, CS and PVA ternary blends could possibly be used for the biomedical applications.
