Abstract
Obesity and hormone dysregulation, common comorbidities of asthma, not only influence asthma risk and onset but can also complicate its management. The pathobiologic characteristics of obesity, such as insulin resistance and metabolism alterations, can impact lung function and airway inflammation while highlighting potential opportunities for therapeutic intervention. Likewise, obesity alters immune cell phenotypes and corticosteroid pharmacokinetics. Hormones such as sex hormones, incretins, and thyroid hormones can also affect asthma. This review highlights the mechanisms underlying obesity-related asthma and hormonal pathologies while exploring potential therapeutic strategies and the need for more research and innovative approaches in managing these comorbid conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) is a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily that has gained considerable attention over the last decade for its observed ability to reverse age-related deterioration of multiple tissues, including the heart. Yet as many researchers have struggled to confirm the cardioprotective and anti-aging effects of GDF11, the topic has grown increasingly controversial, and the field has reached an impasse. We postulated that a clearer understanding of GDF11 could be gained by investigating its health effects at the population level. METHODS AND RESULTS We employed a comprehensive strategy to interrogate results from genome-wide association studies in population Biobanks. Interestingly, phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) of GDF11 tissue-specific cis-eQTLs revealed associations with asthma, immune function, lung function, and thyroid phenotypes. Furthermore, PheWAS of GDF11 genetic variants confirmed these results, revealing similar associations with asthma, immune function, lung function, and thyroid health. To complement these findings, we mined results from transcriptome-wide association studies, which uncovered associations between predicted tissue-specific GDF11 expression and the same health effects identified from PheWAS analyses. CONCLUSIONS In this study, we report novel relationships between GDF11 and disease, namely asthma and hypothyroidism, in contrast to its formerly assumed role as a rejuvenating factor in basic aging and cardiovascular health. We propose that these associations are mediated through the involvement of GDF11 in inflammatory signaling pathways. Taken together, these findings provide new insights into the health effects of GDF11 at the population level and warrant future studies investigating the role of GDF11 in these specific health conditions.

Abstract
Background The thyroid gland exhibits a subtle interconnection with the lungs. We further investigated the correlation between thyroid hormone sensitivity and lung function in euthyroid individuals. Methods Data on spirometry and mortality for participants aged 19-79 years were extracted from the NHANES database. Obstructive lung function was defined as a forced expiratory volume in 1 s to forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1/FVC) < 0.70, while restrictive lung function was considered when FEV1/FVC ≥0.70 and baseline FVC <80 % predicted. Central and peripheral sensitivities to thyroid hormones were mainly evaluated by Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI) and Free Triiodothyronine/Free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) ratio. Logistic regression and subgroup analysis were used to examine potential associations between thyroid hormone sensitivity and lung function. The association between TFQI and all-cause mortality risk was also investigated. Results A total of 6539 participants were analyzed, 900 with obstructive lung function and 407 with restrictive lung function. The prevalence of impaired lung function, both obstructive and restrictive, increased with higher TFQI levels. Logistic regression analysis showed that increased TFQI and decreased FT3/FT4 levels were independent risk factors for obstructive and restrictive lung function (P < 0.05). After adjusting for the impact of lung function, TFQI (HR = 1.25, 95 % CI 1.00-1.56, P = 0.048) was an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality. Conclusion Reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormones has been linked to impaired lung function. TFQI and FT3/FT4 are potential epidemiological tools to quantify the role of central and peripheral thyroid resistance in lung function.

Abstract
Chronic comorbid conditions are common in adults with asthma, and some may influence a patient's asthma exacerbation risk. We explored associations between eighteen chronic comorbid conditions and asthma exacerbation occurrence in adults with asthma in a cross-sectional study nested within a cohort study using data from the two-yearly US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) program. Data of 2387 adults with self-reported doctor-diagnosed current asthma from the 2007 to 2018 NHANES surveys were selected. Investigated chronic comorbidities were: angina pectoris; congestive heart failure; coronary heart disease; depression; diabetes mellitus; soft and hard drug use; gastroesophageal reflux; gout; history of heart attack; history of stroke; hypercholesterolemia; hypertension; kidney failure; liver conditions; obesity; rheumatoid arthritis; and thyroid problems. Outcome was defined as asthma exacerbation category: no, moderate, or severe exacerbation(s) in the past year. Ordinal logistic regression analysis with correction for potential confounders was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) for moderate or severe exacerbations. Observed associations with increased severe asthma exacerbation occurrence were: obesity (OR = 1.67; 95% confidence interval 1.24, 2.26), and rheumatoid arthritis (OR = 1.55; 1.04, 2.30). History of stroke (OR = 1.95; 1.22, 3.11) and rheumatoid arthritis (OR = 1.33; 1.00, 1.75) showed associations with increased moderate exacerbation occurrence. Age-stratified analysis showed soft drug use, obesity, depression, thyroid problems, and rheumatoid arthritis to be associated with moderate and/or severe exacerbation occurrence in one or more 10-year age strata. In conclusion, several chronic comorbid conditions were associated with asthma exacerbation occurrence, which confirms but also complements previous studies. Our observations contribute to understanding exacerbation risk estimation and, ultimately, personalized asthma management.

Abstract
Hormones significantly influence the pathogenesis of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema. This review aims to summarize relevant clinical considerations for practicing allergists and immunologists. The first section reviews the effects of sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The second concerns insulin production in the context of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The third concludes with a discussion of thyroid and adrenal pathology in relationship to asthma, rhinitis, and eczema.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is there a shared genetic or causal association of endometriosis with asthma or what biological mechanisms may underlie their potential relationships? SUMMARY ANSWER Our results confirm a significant but non-causal association of endometriosis with asthma implicating shared genetic susceptibility and biological pathways in the mechanisms of the disorders, and potentially, their co-occurrence. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Some observational studies have reported a pattern of co-occurring relationship between endometriosis and asthma; however, there is conflicting evidence and the aetiology, as well as the underlying mechanisms of the relationship, remain unclear. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION We applied multiple statistical genetic approaches in the analysis of well-powered, genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data to comprehensively assess the relationship of endometriosis with asthma. Endometriosis GWAS from the International Endogene Consortium (IEC, 17 054 cases and 191 858 controls) and asthma GWAS from the United Kingdom Biobank (UKB, 26 332 cases and 375 505 controls) were analysed. Additional asthma data from the Trans-National Asthma Genetic Consortium (TAGC, 19 954 cases and 107 715 controls) were utilized for replication testing. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS We assessed single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-level genetic overlap and correlation between endometriosis and asthma using SNP effect concordance analysis (SECA) and linkage disequilibrium score regression analysis (LDSC) methods, respectively. GWAS meta-analysis, colocalization (GWAS-PW), gene-based and pathway-based functional enrichment analysis methods were applied, respectively, to identify SNP loci, genomic regions, genes and biological pathways shared by endometriosis and asthma. Potential causal associations between endometriosis and asthma were assessed using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE SECA revealed significant concordance of SNP risk effects across the IEC endometriosis and the UKB asthma GWAS. Also, LDSC analysis found a positive and significant genetic correlation (rG = 0.16, P = 2.01 × 10-6) between the two traits. GWAS meta-analysis of the IEC endometriosis and UKB asthma GWAS identified 14 genome-wide significant (Pmeta-analysis < 5.0 × 10-8) independent loci, five of which are putatively novel. Three of these loci were consistently replicated using TAGC asthma GWAS and reinforced in colocalization and gene-based analyses. Additional shared genomic regions were identified in the colocalization analysis. MR found no evidence of a significant causal association between endometriosis and asthma. However, combining gene-based association results across the GWAS for endometriosis and asthma, we identified 17 shared genes with a genome-wide significant Fisher's combined P-value (FCPgene) <2.73 × 10-6. Additional analyses (independent gene-based analysis) replicated evidence of gene-level genetic overlap between endometriosis and asthma. Biological mechanisms including 'thyroid hormone signalling', 'abnormality of immune system physiology', 'androgen biosynthetic process' and 'brain-derived neurotrophic factor signalling pathway', among others, were significantly enriched for endometriosis and asthma in a pathway-based analysis. LARGE SCALE DATA The GWAS for endometriosis data were sourced from the International Endogen Consortium (IEC) and can be accessed by contacting the consortium. The GWAS data for asthma are freely available online at Lee Lab (https://www.leelabsg.org/resources) and from the Trans-National Asthma Genetic Consortium (TAGC). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Given we analysed GWAS datasets from mainly European populations, our results may not be generalizable to other ancestries. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS This study provides novel insights into mechanisms underpinning endometriosis and asthma, and potentially their observed relationship. Findings support a co-occurring relationship of endometriosis with asthma largely due to shared genetic components. Agents targeting 'selective androgen receptor modulators' may be therapeutically relevant in both disorders. Moreover, SNPs, loci, genes and biological pathways identified in our study provide potential targets for further investigation in endometriosis and asthma. Abstract
Asthma represents one of the most common medical issues in the modern world. It is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by persistent inflammation of the airways and disturbances in redox status, leading to hyperresponsiveness of bronchi and airway obstruction. Apart from classical risk factors such as air pollution, family history, allergies, or obesity, disturbances of the levels of micronutrients lead to impairments in the defense mechanisms of the affected organism against oxidative stress and proinflammatory stimuli. In the present review, the impact of micronutrients on the prevalence, severity, and possible risk factors of asthma is discussed. Although the influence of classical micronutrients such as selenium, copper, or zinc are well known, the effects of those such as iodine or manganese are only rarely mentioned. As a consequence, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate how disturbances in the levels of micronutrients and their supplementation might affect the course of asthma.

Abstract
The prevalence of asthma is considerably high among women of childbearing age. Most asthmatic women also often have other atopic disorders. Therefore, the differentiation between patients with atopic diseases without asthma and asthmatics with coexisting diseases is essential to avoid underdiagnosis of asthma and to design strategies to reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life of patients. Hence, we aimed for the first time to conduct an analysis of volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath of women of childbearing age as a new approach to discriminate between asthmatics with other coexisting atopic diseases and non-asthmatics (with or without atopic diseases), which could be a helpful tool for more accurate asthma detection and monitoring using a noninvasive technique in the near future. In this study, exhaled air samples of 336 women (training set (n = 211) and validation set (n = 125)) were collected and analyzed by thermal desorption coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. ASCA (ANOVA (analysis of variance) simultaneous component analysis) and LASSO + LS (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator + logistic regression) were employed for data analysis. Fifteen statistically significant models (p-value < 0.05 in permutation tests) that discriminated asthma with other coexisting atopic diseases in women of childbearing age were generated. Acetone, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative were selected as discriminants of asthma with other coexisting atopic diseases. In addition, carbon disulfide, a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and decane discriminated asthma disease among patients with other atopic disorders. Results of this study indicate that refined metabolomic analysis of exhaled breath allows asthma with other coexisting atopic diseases discrimination in women of reproductive age.

Abstract
Introduction Hyperthyroidism is one of the primary dysfunctional thyroid diseases that results from abnormally high thyroid hormone secretion. It leads to metabolic derangement that manifests as heightened vital functions and metabolism and hyperdynamic blood circulation. Hyperthyroidism jeopardizes one’s quality of life and hampers the patient’s job performance. The disease is chronic but diagnosable and treatable and can be kept under control medically. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of suspected hyperthyroidism cases among a population sample in Jeddah city by using Wayne’s scoring and delineation of factors associated with the disease. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study design was used. A total of 346 participants were conveniently selected from two shopping malls in Jeddah city during a five-day health awareness campaign. The data were collected by certified physicians, according to Wayne’s score inventory. Results The study included 194 women (56.1%) and 152 men (43.9%). The participants’ ages ranged from 16 to 56 years. The Wayne’s scores showed 80.6% were euthyroid, 18.2% equivocal, and 1.2% have hyperthyroidism. Bronchial asthma was significantly associated with hyperthyroidism in men, while obesity was significantly associated with hyperthyroidism in women. Age, gender, level of education, and family history of chronic diseases, including thyroid disorders, were not significantly associated with hyperthyroidism. Conclusions Wayne’s scoring for hyperthyroidism, which is a noninvasive tool, in addition to its detection of hyperthyroidism cases, can predict patients with equivocal results or those that might be subclinical for further medical assessment and follow-up. A Wayne’s score can give the results of hyperthyroidism comparable to the results obtained by biochemical investigations. This tool is not in common use, but it is quite useful and should be put into broader usage.

Abstract
Introduction Multimorbidity associated with significant disease and economic burdens is common among the aged. We identified chronic disease multimorbidity patterns in Koreans 50 years of age or older, and explored whether such patterns were associated with particular sociodemographic factors and health-related quality-of-life. Methods The multimorbidity patterns of 10 chronic diseases (hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, osteoarthritis, tuberculosis, asthma, allergic rhinitis, depression, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid disease) were identified via latent class analysis of data on 8,370 Korean adults aged 50+ years who participated in the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2015). The associations between multimorbidity patterns, and sociodemographic factors and health-related quality of life, were subjected to regression analysis. Results Three patterns of multimorbidity were identified: 1) a relatively healthy group (60.4% of the population); 2) a ‘cardiometabolic conditions’ group (27.8%); and, 3) an ‘arthritis, asthma, allergic rhinitis, depression, and thyroid disease’ group (11.8%). The female (compared to male) gender was associated with an increased likelihood of membership of the cardiometabolic conditions group (odds ratio [OR] = 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.15–1.51) and (to a much greater extent) the arthritis, asthma, allergy, depression, and thyroid disease group (OR = 4.32, 95% CI = 3.30–5.66). Low socioeconomic status was associated with membership of the two multimorbidity classes. Membership of the arthritis, asthma, allergy, depression, and thyroid disease group was associated with a significantly poorer health-related quality-of-life than was membership of the other two groups. Conclusion The co-occurrence of chronic diseases was not attributable to chance. Multimorbidity patterns were associated with sociodemographic factors and quality-of-life. Our results suggest that targeted, integrated public health and clinical strategies dealing with chronic diseases should be based on an understanding of multimorbidity patterns; this would improve the quality-of-life of vulnerable multimorbid adults.
