Abstract
Introduction Anethum graveolens (AG), commonly known as dill, is a plant from the Apiaceae family that has been traditionally used as a skin softener and purifying agent in Persian medicine. In a previous study conducted on male rats, dill was found to have anti-inflammatory effects. The current study aimed to examine the efficacy of topical application of Anethum graveolens oil on pruritus severity, skin dryness, sleep quality, and quality of life in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods In the current clinical trial, the participants were randomly assigned to one of these groups: topical AG preparation, sesame oil, or a control group receiving no treatment. The study was double-blind and placebo-controlled. The topical treatment was applied twice a day for one month to areas of the skin affected by pruritus. The outcome measures included the severity of skin dryness, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Duo's Uremic Pruritus Severity Scale, and the Itchy QoL questionnaire. Results This study involved 106 hemodialysis patients, and after intervention for one month, the medication group had a significantly lower mean score of sleep quality (3.24 ± 2.41) than the placebo (4.54 ± 3.11) and control (5.05 ± 3.21) groups (P=0.032). The mean change in pruritus severity was significantly greater in the medication group (-17.28 ± 8.938) than the placebo (-5.91 ± 5.398) and control (-3.43 ± 3.228) groups (P < 0.001). Moreover, a significant difference was observed in the mean changes in quality of life between the medication, placebo, and control groups, with values of -14.88 ± 7.89, -5.34 ± 4.50, and -1.92 ± 2.86, respectively (P < 0.001). Furthermore, both the medication and placebo groups showed improvement in skin dryness compared to the control group having the values of -1.65 ± 0.91, -1.11 ± 0.79, and -0.38 ± 0.54, respectively (P < 0.001). Conclusion Topical Anethum graveolens preparation significantly improved the sleep quality and quality of life and reduced skin pruritus and dryness in hemodialysis patients. It could be considered as a simple therapeutic modality to control pruritus in hemodialysis patients. This trial is registered with IRCT2017022032671N1.

Abstract
(1) Background: Sleep quality is one of the most important clinical outcomes of hemodialysis (HD) patients, as it can affect their physical and mental health. This study aimed to investigate sleep quality and its affecting factors among patients with HD. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to investigate the quality of sleep among HD patients in two cities in Saudi Arabia. The data were collected during the period from January to December 2022. A convenience sample of 250 HD patients was selected in this study. Data were collected using the Arabic version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). (3) Results: About two-thirds of participants (63.6%) had normal sleep, while one-third had poor sleep (36.4%). There was a significant relationship between the participants' age and the quality of sleep, where participants who were aged more than 50 had poorer sleep than those who were younger (p < 0.001). Male and married participants significantly had poor sleep more than female and single participants (p = 0.011 and 0.015, respectively). In addition, participants who were retired, had a higher number of dependents, did not adhere to exercise, and had more comorbidities had significantly poorer sleep than other groups (p = 0.002, 0.016, 0.023, and <0.001, respectively). The level of education, financial status, distance from home to dialysis center, and participants' satisfaction at the time of dialysis had no influence on the quality of sleep among HD patients. The multiple linear regression shows that exercise (p = 0.017), the number of comorbidities (p = 0.008), and the duration of dialysis (p < 0.020) were the independent factors affecting the quality of sleep among HD patients. (4) Conclusions: About one-third of HD patients in this study had poor sleep. There were significant differences between patients' age, gender, marital status, and sleep-quality levels. Moreover, participants who retired, had a higher number of dependents, did not adhere to exercise, and had more comorbidities had significantly poorer sleep than other groups. Future studies should develop appropriate interventions to address the problem of poor sleep quality among HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are related to decreased quality of life and increased health-related risks. There is insufficient data about actual prevalence and related factors of poor sleepers in this group. In this study, we aimed to investigate prevalence and related risk factors of self-reported poor sleep quality in patients with pre-dialysis CKD. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 259 pre-dialysis CKD patients (median age 56 years; range, 19-85) were included. Demographical, clinical and laboratory correlates were recorded. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula. Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a self-rated questionnaire. Depression was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). RESULTS Median eGFR was 27.6 ml/min/1.73 m2 (range, 9-56). Of the 259 patients, 110 (42.5%) were poor sleepers with global PSQI score >5. The univariate correlation analysis revealed that global PSQI score was positively correlated with age, BMI, waist circumferences (WC), hip circumferences (HC), serum phosphorus and triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure (BP), pulse pressure and BDI score, and negatively correlated with male gender and hemoglobin level. Logistic regression analysis, showed that HC, systolic BP, and BDI scores were independently associated with poor sleep quality (p = 0.001, p = 0.020 and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION Prevalence of poor sleep quality in our pre-dialysis CKD patients was 42.5%. Systolic BP, depression and HC, all of these are potentially correctable factors, were associated with poor sleep quality independently.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION HD unit is a noisy environment for patients, and noise can affect anxiety levels and sleep quality. METHODS The aim of the study is to determine noise level, the relationship between noise levels, and sleep quality and anxiety in patients in HD unit. A descriptive and observational study design was used. Three Benetech GM1351 manual sound-level meters were used to measure noise. A patient information form, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the modified Post-Sleep Inventory were used for data collection. RESULTS The noise range detected in the HD unit ranges from 48.40 to 72 dB(A). Our findings show that patients in the HD unit are exposed to high noise levels and the noise significantly negatively impacts quality of sleep and anxiety level of the patients. CONCLUSIONS It is important to be aware that HD patients are constantly exposed to high levels of noise and to plan nursing interventions to reduce this noise level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To better understand the relation between sleep problems and CKD, we examined temporal trends in the prevalence of self-reported sleep problems in adults in the United States and their associations with CKD and all-cause mortality. METHODS Using data from 27,365 adult participants in five biannual National Health and Examination Surveys (2005-2006 through 2013-2014), we studied five self-reported sleep problems-trouble sleeping, sleep disorder, nocturia (urinating ≥2 times/night), inadequate sleep (<7 hours/night), and excessive sleep (>9 hours/night)-plus a composite index. We conducted three types of analysis: temporal trends in the prevalence of each sleep measure by CKD status, using model-based standardization; cross-sectional analysis of associations between four CKD measures and each sleep measure, using logistic regression; and survival analysis of the association between each sleep measure and mortality, using Cox regression. RESULTS The prevalence of trouble sleeping and sleep disorder increased over the five surveys by 4% and 3%, respectively, whereas the other sleep problems remained relatively stable. All sleep problems, except inadequate sleep, were more common during the study period among adults with CKD than without CKD (40% versus 21% for nocturia; 5% versus 2% for excessive sleep; 30% versus 25% for trouble sleeping; 12% versus 8% for sleep disorder). Both eGFR <30 ml/min per 1.73 m2 and albuminuria were positively associated with nocturia and excessive sleep. Excessive sleep and nocturia were also associated with higher mortality (adjusted hazard ratio for >9 versus 7-9 hours/night=1.7; 95% CI, 1.3 to 2.1; and for nocturia=1.2; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.4). CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of sleep problems among persons with CKD and their associations with mortality suggest their potential importance to clinical practice. Future work could examine the health effects of identifying and treating sleep problems in patients with CKD.

Abstract
This descriptive correlational study was aimed at determining the relationship of hemodialysis shift with sleep quality and depression in 310 hemodialysis patients. Demographic and Clinical Questionnaires, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and Beck's Depression Inventory were used to ascertain the aforementioned relationship. Among the patients, 59.6% reported poor sleep quality and 44.8% reported experiencing depression. Results show that these conditions were significantly related to many factors. Although dialysis shift was not significantly related to sleep quality and depression, sleep quality was found significantly associated with age, female gender, illiteracy, unemployment, residence in rural areas, diabetes, addiction to sedatives, and phosphorus levels. A significant relationship was also found between depression and phosphorus levels. Logistic regression predicted age, gender, illiteracy, unemployment, residence in rural areas, and addiction to sedatives as factors for poor sleep quality. A body mass index (BMI) above 30, decreased urea, and increased phosphorus were predicted as factors for increased depression.

Abstract
Objective: Sleeping disorders are common among Haemodialysis-HD patients. In addition to well-known factors, food consumption impact on sleep quality needs being discovered. Aim was to examine the nutrition-related factors that may influence sleep quality in HD patients. Methods: One hundred and three patients in three HD centres participated. Data were collected with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-PSQI and Questionnaire Form about socio-demographic characteristics and appetite. Biochemical findings were obtained; food consumption for three consecutive days was recorded. Independent Samples t/Mann Whitney U tests for mean comparison; Logistic Regression Analysis for determining variables affecting sleep quality, were used. Results: Mean age was 59.19±14.57 years. 51.5% were women. 37.9% had good (PSQI<5) and 62.1% had poor (PSQI≥5) sleep quality. Appetite had significant impact on sleep quality; poor sleeping risk was 4.194 fold higher in patients with bad appetite than those with good appetite (p=0.038). Biochemical findings of poor and good sleepers were similar, except for potassium and creatinine. Vitamins B1, B6 and folate intake of good and poor sleepers were significantly different. Patients with good sleep quality consumed significantly higher amounts of above B vitamins (p=0.030, p=0.036, p=0.034, respectively). Conclusions: Favourable effect of appetite and certain nutrients intake on sleep quality in HD patients was shown. Improving nutritional status of HD patients has potential to increase their sleep quality.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have more frequent sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease than normals. Since arterial stiffness as a risk factor of atherosclerosis can be evaluated with pulse wave velocity (PWV), we aimed to investigate the prevalance of sleep quality (SQ) and the relationship between SQ and risk factors of atherosclerosis and whether there is a relationship between SQ and PWV (the indicator of arterial stiffness) in predialysis CKD patients. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out in CKD patients followed at the Nephrology Department in Konya, Turkey, between November 2014 and March 2015. A total of 484 CKD patients were screened. Of the 484 patients, 285 patients were excluded. The remaining 199 CKD patients without cardiovascular disease at stage 3, 4, and 5 (predialysis) were included in the final study. The SQ of the patients was evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). PWV was measured by using a single-cuff arteriography device (Mobil-O-Graph PWA, a model pulse wave analysis device; IEM). RESULTS A total of 199 predialysis CKD patients were included in the study, 73 of whom (36.7 %) were 'poor sleepers' (global PSQI >5). Patients with poor SQ were older than those with good SQ (p = 0.077). SQ was worse in female patients compered to male patients (p = 0.001). SQ was worse in obese patients. As laboratory parameters, serum phosphorus, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides levels correlated positively with SQ (respectively; r = 0.245, p&0.001; r = 0.142, p = 0.049; r = 0.142, p = 0.048). The indicator of arterial stiffness, PWV, was higher in patients with poor SQ (p = 0.033). Hyperphosphatemia and female gender are determined as risk factors for poor SQ in multivariate analysis (p = 0.049, ExpB = 1.477; p = 0.009, ExpB = 0,429, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed for the first time that there is a relationship between SQ and risk factors of atherosclerosis in predialysis CKD patients.

Abstract
Objectives To assess the relationship between sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) in Chinese patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis (MHD). Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled patients undergoing MHD. Self-reported sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]), daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) and HRQoL (36-item Short Form [SF-36]) were recorded for all patients. Results Sixty eight patients (mean ± SD age = 61.75 ± 16.56 years; 43 male/25 female) who regularly received MHD were included. The prevalence of poor sleepers was 69.1% (47/68) and daytime sleepiness was 11.8% (eight of 68). Poor sleepers had a significantly lower Physical Component Scale (PCS) score, Mental Component Scale (MCS) score and total SF-36 score than good sleepers. The PSQI score correlated inversely with both the PCS and MCS scores and correlated positively with age. Independent variables associated with total SF-36 score were duration of MHD, ESS score and PSQI score. Conclusions Poor sleep quality is a common and severe issue for MHD patients in east China. Both sleep quality and daytime sleepiness were associated with lower HRQoL scores.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between dialysis adequacy and sleep quality in haemodialysis patients. BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common in haemodialysis patients. Dialysis adequacy is one of the factors associated with sleep quality. Studies evaluating the association between dialysis adequacy and sleep quality in haemodialysis patients present different results. DESIGN Descriptive and cross-sectional study. METHODS This study was performed with a total of 119 patients who had applied to dialysis centres for haemodialysis treatment between January and March 2014. The data collection form consists of socio-demographic and medical characteristics as well as laboratory parameters. A modified Post-Sleep Inventory was used to examine sleep quality in the research. RESULTS There were no statistically significant relationship between sleep quality and dialysis adequacy (p > 0·05). When the Post-Sleep Inventory scores were evaluated according to sleep quality, 63·0% of patients had poor sleep quality, and 37·0% had good sleep quality. Sleep quality was worse in unemployed patients (X(2) = 4·852; p = 0·025) and patients who smoked heavily (Z = 2·289; p = 0·022). CONCLUSIONS In this study, there is no statistically significant relationship between dialysis adequacy and sleep quality. However, it was found that the majority of haemodialysis patients had poor sleep quality. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Even if the dialysis adequacy of patients is at the recommended level, their sleep qualities may be poor. Therefore, evaluations of the sleep quality of haemodialysis patients during the clinical practice must be taken into consideration.

Abstract
Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and sleep quality (SQ) were impaired in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The impairment of both HRQoL and SQ and being in a depressive mood were found to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. We aimed to investigate the association between SQ, HRQoL, and depression, and to define independent predictors of SQ and depression in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. Ninety HD patients (41 females, 49 males with mean age 50 ± 15.7 years) and 64 PD patients (27 females, 37 males with mean age 52.4 ± 15.3 years) receiving renal replacement therapy for at least 3 months were screened for the assessment of SQ, HRQoL, and depression in this cross-sectional study. A modified postsleep inventory, Short Form of Medical Outcomes Study (SF-36) and Beck depression inventory (BDI) were applied to all patients for evaluating SQ, HRQoL, and depression, respectively. HD and PD patients had similar total SQ scores. Physical and mental component scale of HRQoL were found to be significantly higher in HD patients (p < 0.001). PD patients were found to be much more in depressive mood when compared with HD patients (p < 0.001). Independent predictors of depression in patients were mental component scale of HRQoL, gender (being female), and dialysis modality (being PD patient). Physical component scale was also found to be an independent predictor of SQ. This study showed that despite similar SQ scores between two groups, HD patients had better HRQoL and less depression than PD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Both the incidence and the prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in elderly patients are increasing worldwide. Elderly ESRD patients have been found to be more prone to depression than the general population. There are many studies that have addressed the relationship between sleep quality (SQ), depression, and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in ESRD patients, but previous studies have not confirmed the association in elderly hemodialysis (HD) patients. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to demonstrate this relationship in elderly HD patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty-three elderly HD patients (32 females and 31 males aged between 65 and 89 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. A modified Post-Sleep Inventory (PSI), the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short form health survey, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied. RESULTS The prevalence of poor sleepers (those with a PSI total sleep score [PSI-4 score] of 4 or higher) was 71% (45/63), and the prevalence of depression was 25% (16/63). Of the 45 poor sleepers, 15 had depression, defined as a BDI score of 17 or higher. Poor sleepers had a significantly higher rate of diabetes mellitus (P = 0.03), significantly higher total BDI scores, and lower Physical Component Scale scores (ie, lower HRQoL) than good sleepers. The PSI-4 score correlated negatively with Physical Component Scale (r = -0.500, P < 0.001) and Mental Component Scale scores (r = -0.527, P < 0.001) and it correlated positively with the BDI score (r = 0.606, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, independent variables of PSI-4 score were BDI score (beta value [β] = 0.350, P < 0.001), Mental Component Scale score (β = -0.291, P < 0.001), and age (β = 0.114, P = 0.035). CONCLUSION Poor SQ is a very common issue and is associated with both depression and lower HRQoL in elderly HD patients.
