The Incorporation of Mexican Women in Seasonal Migration: A Study of Gender Differences

Gender, migration and perceptions of HIV risk in Mexico

This study examines the role that duty plays in men's and women's perceptions of HIV-related risk in Mexico, and how gender and migration influence these perceptions. We draw on qualitative data from the 2014 Study of Health and Migration in Mexico (SHMM), which included 24 in-depth interviews with migrant men and non-migrant women living in a medium-sized city in Guanajuato, Mexico. While men report migrating out of responsibility to provide for their families, this sense of duty also had implications for their sexual health behaviours. Duty permeates how residents in this migrant-sending community described their perceptions of HIV risk, with men and women drawing consistently on three aspects of duty: fidelity, gendered sexual expectations, and the burden of HIV prevention. We argue that a strong sense of duty can prompt gender role expansion for migrant men and limit gender role expansion for non-migrant women.

The Effects of Years Lived in the United States on the General Health Status of California’s Foreign-Born Populations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of immigrant status and years lived in the United States on the general health status of California's foreign-born populations. Two models were constructed using California's aggregate adult population and the adult foreign-born population. A binary logistic regression was conducted using data from the 2003 California Health Interview Survey. California's immigrant populations were found to enjoy a self-assessed health advantage compared to California's US-born population. The results present evidence of a downward trend in self-assessed health amongst California's foreign-born population associated with increased years lived in country. The initial health advantage found among California's foreign-born appears to function mainly through socio-economic factors. These results suggest that the deterioration in health associated with increased years lived in the US may be an effect of immigrants' exposure to California's environmental determinants of human health rather that the loss of culture-specific protective factors.

Marital Conflict and Acculturation Among Mexican American Husbands and Wives

This study examined the relationship between acculturation and multiple dimensions of marital conflict among Mexican American husbands and wives. Participants were 151 husbands and wives who were recruited from a health maintenance organization in northern California and individually interviewed. More acculturated husbands and wives engaged in less avoidance of conflict and were more expressive of their feelings in an argument. Husbands who were more acculturated reported more conflict concerning sex and consideration for the other. Bicultural and more acculturated husbands reported that their wives were more verbally and physically aggressive, compared with mono-Mexican husbands. The findings provide evidence that more acculturated husbands and wives are involved in more direct expressions of conflict in their marriages, compared with less acculturated husbands and wives.
