"Falling Through the Cracks": A Retrospective Exploration of the Barriers to Help-Seeking Among Men Convicted of Sexual Crimes

"Not Offending Is Easy. The Double Life, the Secrets, the Loneliness Are the Hardest Parts I Needed Help with": Understanding the Treatment Needs of People with Attractions to Children

People with sexual attractions to children are often subject to heavy stigmatization, and several studies have started to look at how this affects their mental health. This is likely due to a conflation with offending and sexual risk within society, which translates into academic work on the topic. In this context, little is known about how the experiences of non-offending individuals with attractions to children inform their treatment needs in non-forensic contexts. We conducted anonymous semi-structured interviews with large sample of 31 non-offending adult men who are attracted to children, recruited through online forums. The results focus on two superordinate themes central to interpersonal and intrapersonal experiences, and the effects of these on both everyday functioning ("Living with a sexual interest in children"), and perceived treatment needs ("Establishing treatment targets"). These findings hold significance for the effective design and delivery of both preventative and healthcare-related support services, particularly in relation to early intervention and assisting this population in living full lives with their sexual attractions.

Sexual fulfilment, wellbeing and risk considerations for people with sexual attractions to children

Research focused on understanding the experiences of individuals with sexual attractions to children and their pursuit of sexual fulfilment faces notable limitations, primarily stemming from ethical and legal challenges, and pervasive social stigma. This review paper explores these challenges and outlines the connections between sexual fulfilment, treatment goals and overall wellbeing. We consider the importance of sexual satisfaction in promoting mental and physical health, and its potential role in reducing the risk of sexually abusive behaviors. Recognizing that promoting healthier and more fulfilling lives extends beyond risk mitigation, the paper highlights future research avenues such as exploring the conceptualization and achievement of sexual satisfaction. In examining alternative perspectives, including the potential risk enhancement associated with achieving sexual fulfilment, we also argue the need for an evidence-based approach and robust research agenda to inform and guide interventions. Through these considerations, the paper aims to encourage a more informed and compassionate understanding of sexual fulfilment for people with sexual attractions to children.

Web-Based Initiatives to Prevent Sexual Offense Perpetration: A Systematic Review

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Web-based programs to prevent sexual offense perpetration could provide an opportunity that avoids many of the barriers associated with in-person treatment. The aim of this systematic review is to give an overview of the literature on web-based initiatives aimed at sexual offense perpetration prevention published during the last 10 years (2013-2023) and to report data on the efficacy as well as issues of the discussed initiatives.

RECENT FINDINGS

We included 18 empirical studies discussing web-based perpetration prevention initiatives, of which six are randomized controlled trials. Among the articles, four cover programs focusing on prevention of sexual reoffending and 14 discuss programs aimed at preventing initial sexual offenses. Evaluations and observations of web-based initiatives aimed at preventing sexual offense perpetration show overall promising results and are well-appreciated. However, evaluation studies are scarce and more randomized controlled trials replicating this effect are warranted.
