Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with cancer, but we wanted to show VTE data for the last year of life, adjusting for age, sex, socioeconomic status and comorbidities. We also wanted to study the possible increase in VTE month by month, as well as time trends from 2015 to 2023. METHODS A cohort of 27,423 deceased people with cancer were analyzed with t-tests, chi-square tests and binary logistic regression models. RESULTS In total, 13.6% had at least one VTE episode during the last year of life and the VTE rate increased month by month (p < 0.0001). In adjusted models, higher VTE rates were associated with younger age and being a woman (p < 0.0001), both for all VTE as well as separately for pulmonary embolism (PE). The VTE rate increased by 47% from 11.1% in 2015 to 16.3% in 2023, and with significant differences for the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 years (i.e., 2015-2019 compared to 2020-2023, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS VTE is common in the last year of life and increases month by month. Higher frequencies are associated with female sex but especially with being younger, or having certain cancer forms such as pancreatic, gynecologic or lung cancer. The rate of VTE increased from 2015 to 2023. This is of interest as VTE has been associated with higher treatment intensity and with poorer prognosis and should be considered in the decision-making process.

Abstract
Dysregulated hemostasis in cancer patients is associated with various clinical conditions, from thromboembolic complications to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Despite the well-established association between cancer and thromboembolic complications, the mechanisms involved are not completely elucidated. There are several predisposing factors in cancer for increased thrombus generation, such as immobilization and chemotherapy. The term cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) has been introduced to describe the close bidirectional relationship between cancer and thromboembolic events. Conventional coagulation tests (PT/aPTT) are more accurate in detecting a hypocoagulable rather than a hypercoagulable state; thus, their contribution to CAT management is limited. Traditionally, D-dimer levels have been the most common laboratory study for the evaluation of thrombotic risk. However, D-dimer levels only display a snapshot of the coagulation cascade, and they cannot provide a dynamic evaluation of evolving clot formation. Non-conventional assays, such as viscoelastic methods and microparticle formation are promising tools for the identification of patients at risk for developing CAT. Recent guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology counsel against the estimation of thrombotic risk through a single test and recommend the use of scoring systems that take into account several risk factors. The present review outlines the current insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of CAT and provides a comprehensive review of the latest advances in the laboratory assessment of CAT and the recent guidelines for the management of patients at risk for developing thromboembolic complications.

Abstract
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study investigates the potential correlation between the increased use of antipsychotic medications and the rising incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE). As psychiatric disorders surged, the consequential escalation in antipsychotic drug use raised concerns about thrombotic risks. We conducted a comprehensive literature review using PubMed, focusing on articles that intersected COVID-19, antipsychotic medication, and thrombosis. This approach allowed for a nuanced examination of the historical and recent data on antipsychotic drugs and their association with thrombotic events. Our findings reveal a notable link between the use of antipsychotic medications, particularly second-generation antipsychotics, and an increased risk of VTE, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. This association was evident, despite variations in study designs and populations. The study underscores the need for cautious medication management in psychiatric care, especially during pandemic conditions like COVID-19, to mitigate thrombotic risks. It advocates a personalized approach to prescribing antipsychotics, considering individual patient factors and comorbidities, to balance the benefits against potential thrombotic complications.
