'It stretches your body but makes you feel good too': A qualitative study exploring young people's perceptions and experiences of yoga

School-based yoga and mindfulness interventions for young adolescents: A qualitative study in a disadvantaged area

OBJECTIVES

With raising rates of mental health problems, mind-body interventions are increasingly being integrated in schools to support children and adolescents' mental health and well-being. The aim of this study was to explore young adolescents' experiences of yoga and mindfulness and the acceptability of delivery within the school curriculum in an area of high deprivation.

DESIGN

Qualitative group interviews with young adolescents embedded within a larger feasibility study exploring the universal (class-wide) delivery of yoga and mindfulness interventions.

METHODS

After participation in separate 10-week yoga or mindfulness interventions, 45 adolescents (12-13 years old; 66.7% male) took part in semi-structured group interviews exploring perceptions, acceptability, and experiences of each intervention. Data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Two overarching themes were identified, evident across both mindfulness and yoga groups. "Facilitators and barriers to engagement" outlined key factors impacting acceptability, including prior perceptions. Teacher qualities of non-reactivity and respect, an invitational approach to teaching, and interactive sessions were highly valued. Secondly, participants described a range of "psychosocial impacts", including increased emotional regulation, positive mindset and self-confidence, and greater focus and concentration. Physical benefits were also reported in the yoga group.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to explore the acceptability and impact of universal yoga and mindfulness interventions with an ethnically diverse sample of disadvantaged young adolescents in the United Kingdom. The findings suggest mind-body interventions can help children and adolescents develop skills to better manage challenges in their everyday lives, but they require further integration into the curriculum for optimal benefit.

Clinical knowledge, experiences, and perceptions of yoga providers in arthritis treatment: a UK-based qualitative study

This study explored yoga providers' clinical knowledge of arthritis, experiences of delivering yoga to people with arthritis, their perceived role in arthritis treatment, and perceived yoga training needs. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with 20 United Kingdom (UK)-based yoga providers were conducted. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically. The analysis generated eight themes. Yoga providers were generally aware of their attendees' health conditions and had clinical knowledge of arthritis through their yoga training. They were reasonably confident in delivering yoga to attendees with arthritis and felt that they had an important role in supporting these attendees. Gentle yoga practices were considered appropriate by the yoga providers, with a perception that a potential interplay between major components of yoga including yogic poses (asana), breathing practices (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana) and relaxation practices could help impart mind-body benefits in arthritis. Creating a safe and supportive environment in yoga sessions, being empathetic towards attendees' needs, and offering tailored modifications were perceived to be important for delivering yoga in arthritis treatment. Major system-level challenges to yoga delivery in arthritis treatment included the inadequate promotion of yoga, the unregulated nature of yoga delivery, and the absence of evidence-based arthritis-specific yoga training. Yoga providers felt they could play a key role in arthritis treatment in the UK, provided yoga is adequately promoted and made accessible to people with arthritis, yoga delivery is regulated, and arthritis-specific yoga training using the best available scientific evidence is made accessible to them.

Effect of Yoga Therapy on Hypothyroidism: A Systematic Review

Background

Hypothyroidism (HT) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder, affecting approximately one in 10 out of 35 adults, with a higher prevalence in females and the elderly.

Purpose

This systematic review (SR) aimed to discuss the effects of yoga on markers and comorbid conditions of HT.

Methods

The SR was registered with the PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2022 CRD42022312990). Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE were searched for the relevant English language interventional studies published from 31 December 1947 to 31 December 2023 by using the keywords 'meditation OR breath regulation OR yoga OR yoga nidra AND hypothyroidism OR hypothyreosis OR underactive thyroid OR low thyroid'. Of the 4078 screened studies, eight eligible studies (three RCTs, two pilot studies, two pre-post trials, and one case study) with 421 HT patients (392 females and 29 males) and three to six-month yoga interventions were included. Two independent review authors extracted study characteristics and synthesised them descriptively. RCTs and NRSIs were assessed for risk-of-bias (RoB) using Cochrane tools RoB2 and ROBINS-1.

Results

The findings suggest that yoga effectively improves the thyroid profile, lipid profile, heart rate variability, pulmonary functions, anxiety, depression, and quality of life among HT patients.

Conclusion

Yoga may be an inexpensive add-on preventive and therapeutic option for HT. The clinical and methodological heterogeneity among the studies did not allow for meta-analysis (MA). Well-designed MAs are warranted by including rigorous RCTs to draw valid conclusions and defined mechanisms regarding the efficacy of yoga practices/interventions on HT.

Development and Implementation of a Culturally Informed Spanish Language Yoga Program for Latiné Women With Overweight or Obesity Diagnosed With Cancer: A Single Arm Pilot Study

Background

Given limited yoga research in health disparities populations, we developed and evaluated a 12-week Spanish language yoga program for Latiné women with overweight or obesity affected by cancer. The program aimed to empower participants through culturally tailored yoga practice and opportunities for social connection and support.

Methods

Partnering with a community-based organization, the program was co-created by bilingual (English and Spanish-speaking) yoga instructors, Latiné cancer survivor support professionals, and integrative medicine researchers. The single arm intervention consisted of 12 separate, 60-minute Hatha yoga classes, including physical postures, breathing exercises, culturally relevant poetry, and post-practice socialization opportunities. Measures were administered at baseline, 12-week, and 24-week.

Results

Thirty-five eligible participants enrolled in the program, demonstrating high feasibility and relevance as well as high levels of engagement in home practice. Some participants faced barriers to regular home practice, including family responsibilities and concerns about proper pose execution. Preliminary outcome analyses indicated improvements in sleep disturbance, pain interference, depression, and blood pressure post-intervention, with sustained improvements in depression, anxiety, and blood pressure at 24-week. No significant changes were observed in fatigue, physical function, positive affect, satisfaction with social roles and activities, and weight. Structured post-practice social snack time with yoga instructors (compared with unstructured time with peers) was associated with self-reported improvements in satisfaction with social roles and activities and weight loss.

Conclusion

This yoga program successfully engaged female Latiné cancer survivors with overweight and obesity and serves as a foundational step in empowering this population to improve their health and well-being through culturally tailored yoga practice. Future research should utilize controlled study designs and engage participants from different geographical regions to study the efficacy and sustainability of findings.
