Abstract
Research with siblings of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is scarce, although more than one-third of them experience limitations on their quality of life. This interview study aims to explore the diagnosis-associated experience of German siblings of children with CHD, their interest in a potential intervention, and potential key topics and contextual conditions of such an intervention. Interviews with 10 siblings aged 10 to 21 and a respective parent were conducted from August to October 2021, resulting in 20 interviews. Negative experiences associated with CHD included concerns regarding hospitalization, health deterioration, and the death of the child with CHD, as well as burdens including reduced family activities, less parental attention and support, and extended family meals. Positive experiences included perceived positive consequences of CHD, such as strong family cohesion and empathy toward people with chronic illnesses. Furthermore, siblings experienced enhanced coping mechanisms, such as having conversations with friends and family about the high prevalence of CHD and successful treatment or using distractions such as entertainment or study. Siblings' reported interest in a future intervention included empathy, peer support, and studying medical information on CHD. These findings should be used for counseling and developing tailored interventions to support these siblings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As more than 85% of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) have grown to adulthood through improvement in treatment and surgery, the difficulties they experience are expanding into areas related to daily life. Accordingly, adjustment to school in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with CHD is of increasing interest and is influenced by familial factors. OBJECTIVE This was a cross-sectional descriptive study to examine the effects of parental positive emotional expressiveness and sibling relationships on school adjustment of AYAs with CHD. METHODS In this study, a self-reported questionnaire survey was used to collect the data. The participants were 104 AYAs with CHD aged 13 to 21 years who were attending school and had siblings. RESULTS Maternal positive emotional expressiveness ( r = 0.584, P < .01), paternal positive emotional expressiveness ( r = 0.584, P < .01), and sibling warmth/closeness ( r = 0.478, P < .01) were significantly correlated with school adjustment. However, the results of multiple regression analysis showed that only maternal positive emotional expressiveness (ß = 0.459, P < .05) and sibling warmth/closeness (ß = 0.236, P < .05) were significantly associated with school adjustment. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents and young adults with CHD who reported higher maternal positive emotional expressiveness and sibling warmth/closeness exhibited better school adjustment. Findings suggest that intervention programs to increase parental positive expressiveness and enhance warmth/closeness of sibling relationships may contribute to improving school adjustment.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a major global health problem. Until recently, the siblings of this group did not receive much attention. This review, conducted from November 2019 to October 2020, aims to summarize knowledge about psychosocial well-being and quality of life (QoL), associated factors, and interventions for siblings of children with CHD. Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science via EBSCOhost, and CENTRAL. Twelve articles were included. Results showed that psychosocial well-being was impaired in 14% to 40% of siblings. Negative impact of illness was highest for CHD siblings compared to siblings of children with cancer, cystic fibrosis, or diabetes. QoL was impaired in up to one-third. Siblings of children with CHD and cancer rated their QoL lower than those of siblings of children with cystic fibrosis or type-1 diabetes. Associated factors were sibling age, gender, socioeconomic status, miscarriage, previous sibling death, visibility of illness, and severity of condition. Only one of two interventions focused on siblings of CHD children. Although data are scarce and inhomogeneous, it indicates that siblings of CHD children suffer from lower psychosocial well-being and QoL than siblings of children with other chronic conditions. Interventions to improve their situation should be developed.

Abstract
Pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a chronic illness that affects the overall quality of life of patients during childhood. This article highlights the psychological and social burden of CKD in patients and their families. Patients with CKD and their families require comprehensive treatment for psychosocial problems. Therefore, it is crucial for pediatricians to screen for these issues and refer patients and their families for therapy. Tools that are short, easy to administer, and easy to score, such as the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory or the Childhood Depression Inventory, can be utilized during routine clinical appointments. Reducing the negative impact of CKD on the family will improve the well-being and coping skills of patients and their families.

Abstract
Effective parent-child communication may serve to buffer the potential negative impacts of stressful situations on a child. Children who have a brother or sister with a life-threatening or life-limiting medical condition may turn to their parents for help with comprehending the situation, to help maintain their own ability to function across various life areas or to receive emotional support. There is a need for more investigation into the nature and importance of parent-child communication in the context of living with a seriously ill brother or sister. The current paper presents a framework of parent-sibling communication in the context of living with a seriously unwell child, distinguishing the focus of communication (illness-related vs. non-illness-related) and the purpose of communication (information-provision vs. emotional support). Such a framework offers a holistic approach to exploring some of the challenges of communication between parents and well-siblings. The state of current knowledge regarding the focus and purpose of communication between parents and well-siblings is reviewed, and implications for research and possible clinical applications discussed.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect. Little is known of the impact of having a sibling with CHD. Available literature documents negative impact of having a sibling with other chronic conditions. This literature review considers empirical evidence investigating the impact of having a sibling with CHD. Twelve databases were searched, and 202 articles retrieved. Eleven articles met the inclusion criteria and were subject to data extraction, quality appraisal, and narrative synthesis. Three themes emerged: changes in normal life, impact on siblings, and factors affecting the extent of impact on siblings. Only one intervention study was identified, 5 of 10 studies were conducted over 20 years ago, and only 4 studies included children as participants. Evidence suggests siblings of children with CHD experience adverse life changes which lead to negative impacts in several domains. Evidence is inconclusive regarding mitigating factors of these impacts. Further research is needed to understand the experiences of being a sibling of a child with CHD.

Abstract
Well siblings of chronically ill children experience family disruptions that profoundly affect them. Previous research focusing on well siblings' experiences has often produced inconsistent findings, likely the result of varying study designs and samples. The purposes of this synthesis research study were twofold: (a) to assess the applicability of existing grounded theory of sibling response to a child's cancer to a wider range of childhood conditions; and (b) to refine the existing theory to reflect the experiences of the broader sample. Data for the synthesis came from a National Institute of Nursing Research-funded mixed-methods synthesis examining the intersection of childhood chronic illness and family life. The current analysis was based on well sibling results extracted from 78 research reports published between 2000 and 2014. An existing grounded theory, Creating a Tenuous Balance (CTB), was discovered at the outset of analysis and used as the primary framework for coding and synthesizing results. The focus of most studies was siblings' responses to 14 chronic conditions, with cancer being the most often studied. Results reflected siblings' perspectives of their experiences as well as perspectives of parents and the ill child. The analysis substantiated all four patterns of sibling behavior included in CTB, with the patterns of adapting to changes in personal and family life, and handling strong emotions being especially challenging aspects of the sibling experience. Moreover, the results expanded several aspects of CTB. The analysis provided evidence of the applicability of the theory to a varied group of chronic conditions and enabled us to identify important areas for developing interventions to support siblings.

Abstract
Children with life-limiting and disabling conditions are surviving longer than previously, and many require palliative and supportive care, usually at home. Home-based care can put family life under considerable strain, as parents care for their child's complex, often unpredictable, continuing care needs. Rainbow Trust Children's Charity aims to bridge gaps in services for children with life-threatening or terminal conditions by providing family support workers (FSWs). The study used a range of methods (surveys, interviews and ethnographic observation) approach to explore key aspects of the work of the FSWs. The target population for the surveys was families with a child having complex, life-threatening or terminal conditions receiving care from FSWs. The participants included 55 families (12 bereaved) and 39 children aged 2-18 years. Thematic analysis revealed how the FSWs became a presence in families' lives in three main ways: (1) encompassing and embracing families through supporting needs and promoting resilience; (2) befriending and bonding through developing knowledge, trusting relationships and a sense of closeness; and (3) accompanying and enduring by 'being with' families in different settings, situations and crises and by enduring alongside the families. The study demonstrated the fundamental importance of workers who are able to provide aspects of support that is usually not provided by other services.

Abstract
To assess Belgian siblings' self-reported quality of life (QoL) and the impact of illness on four different paediatric illnesses. Healthy siblings (n = 131) of children with type 1 diabetes, cancer, congenital heart disease (CHD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) completed the Child Health Questionnaire and the Sibling Perception Questionnaire. Results were compared to those of a matched group of siblings of healthy children. Siblings reported a good QoL, similar to controls, with the exception that siblings reported better on the QoL domain pain (p < .01). QoL was not related to time since diagnosis but the impact of illness was higher nearer to the time of diagnosis (r = -.39, p < .001). QoL of siblings of children with CHD or cancer was lower than QoL in the CF or type 1 diabetes group whilst impact of illness was highest for the CHD group. QoL of siblings of a child with a chronic illness is similar to the QoL of peers. Studies investigating siblings' QoL or the impact of illness on siblings should include the day-to-day demands of the illness as well as less obvious illness-related issues like 'hidden stress' and 'sense of control'.
