Perceptions of teachers regarding sex education in National Capital Territory of Delhi

A cross sectional study was conducted to find out the knowledge and attitudes of school teachers regarding sex education. Information was collected from 476 senior secondary school teachers belonging both to the government and public schools, selected randomly in National Capital Territory of Delhi using pre-tested close ended questionnaires. A majority of school teachers (73%) were in favour of imparting sex education to school children. Regarding contents of sex education, 90% agreed to the inclusion of reproductive anatomy, physiology including menstruation and birth control measures like condoms and oral pills. However, a majority of school teachers did not want sex education to include topics like abortion, premarital sex and masturbation etc. Fourteen years of age was considered to be the most appropriate for imparting sex education by 28.6% of school teachers. School teachers and doctors were considered by 69.4% and 63.6% of the respondents respectively to be the most appropriate persons for providing sex education.

Parents' viewpoint on reproductive health and contraceptive practice among sexually active adolescents in the Port Harcourt local government area of Rivers State, Nigeria

The viewpoint of parents on reproductive health, specifically their attitude towards contraceptive use among sexually active adolescent daughters and general opinion on adolescent pregnancy, was examined. A sample survey of parents of pregnant adolescents in Port Harcourt was conducted. A greater proportion (79.1%) of parents did not favour the use of contraceptives by sexually active adolescents because according to their parents, contraception kills. Also, most (87.8%) parents did not usually discuss sexual matters with their adolescent girls. However, the majority (93.2%) of parents would want a sex education programme in schools in order to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Post primary school teachers' view point on reproductive health and contraceptive practice among schoolgirls in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The view point of secondary school teachers on reproductive health, specifically, their attitude towards contraceptive practice among sexually active schoolgirls and general opinion on teenage pregnancy was examined. A sample survey of teachers was conducted in all the registered girls and mixed post primary schools in Port Harcourt. A substantial proportion of teachers were of the opinion that sexually active schoolgirls should not be encouraged to use contraceptives because they damage reproductive organs. A greater proportion (33.8%) of teachers was also of the opinion that schoolgirls should abstain from sex until they are married. This was closely followed by the suggestion that sexually active girls should use contraceptives (20.8%). The majority (48.3%) of teachers, however, advocated a sex education programme in the schools in order to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
