Near-Ultraviolet Indoor Black Light-Harvesting Perovskite Solar Cells

Indoor light-energy-harvesting solar cells have long-standing history with perovskite solar cells (PSCs) recently emerging as potential candidates with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, almost all of the reported studies on indoor light-harvesting solar cells utilize white light in the visible wavelength. Low wavelength near-ultraviolet (UV) lights used under indoor environments are not given attention despite their high photon energy. In this study, perovskite solar cells have been investigated for the first time for harvesting energy from a commercially available near-UV (UV-A) indoor LED light (395-400 nm). Also called black lights, these near-UV lights are commonly used for decoration (e.g., in bars, pubs, aquariums, parties, clubs, body art studios, neon lights, and Christmas and Halloween decorations). The optimized perovskite solar cells with the n-i-p architecture using the CH3NH3PbI3 absorber were fabricated and characterized under different illumination intensities of near-UV indoor LEDs. The champion devices delivered a PCE and power output of 20.63% and 775.86 μW/cm2, respectively, when measured under UV illumination of 3.76 mW/cm2. The devices retained 84.10% of their initial PCE when aged under near-UV light for 24 h. The effects of UV exposure on the device performance have been comprehensively characterized. Furthermore, UV-stable solar cells fabricated with a modified electron transport layer retained 95.53% of its initial PCE after 24 h UV exposure. The champion devices delivered enhanced PCE and power output of 26.19% and 991.21 μW/cm2, respectively, when measured under UV illumination of 3.76 mW/cm2. This work opens up a novel direction for energy harvesting from near-UV indoor light sources for applications in microwatt-powered electronics such as internet of things sensors.

Nominal UV-A irradiances were tested at or below the UL standard limit for continuous human exposure (maximum irradiance of 10 W/m2). We observed photoinactivation properties that varied by organism type, with bacteria and enveloped virus being more susceptible to UV-A than non-enveloped virus and spores. Overall, we conclude that continuous-mode UV-A lighting is better suited for occupied-space disinfection than pulsing UV-A at equivalent low irradiances, and we draw comparisons to other studies in the literature.

Inactivation of Pathogens in Air Using Ultraviolet Direct Irradiation Below Exposure Limits

It is demonstrated herein that low-intensity UV radiation below exposure limits can achieve high levels of equivalent air changes per hour (ACHeq) and can be an effective component of efforts to combat airborne pathogens such as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). An ACHeq of 4 h-¹ is presently achievable over a continuous 8 h period for the SARS-CoV-2 virus with UV-C light-emitting diodes (LEDs) having peak wavelength at 275 nm, and future improvements in LED technology and optics are anticipated to enable improvements up to 150 h-¹ in the coming decade. For example, the actinic EL is 60 J/m² at 254 nm, and human coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, have a UV dose required for 90 % inactivation of about 5 J/m² at 254 nm. Irradiation by 254 nm UV-C at the EL is expected to provide 90 % inactivation of these organisms in air in about 40 min when the UV-C is delivered at a constant irradiance over 8 h, or in about 5 min if the UV-C is delivered at a constant irradiance over 1 h. Since the irradiation is continuous, the inactivation of initial contaminants accumulates to 99 % and then 99.9 %, and it also immediately begins inactivating any newly introduced (e.g., exhaled) pathogens at the same rate throughout the 8 h period. The efficacy for inactivating airborne pathogens with DIBEL may be expressed in terms of ACHeq, which may be compared with conventional ventilation-based methods for air disinfection. DIBEL may be applied in addition to other disinfection methods, such as upper room UV germicidal irradiation, and mechanical ventilation and filtration. The ACHeq of the separate methods is additive, providing enhanced cumulative disinfection rates. Conventional air disinfection technologies have typical ACHeq values of about 1 h-¹ to 5 h-¹ and maximum practical values of about 20 h-¹. UV-C DIBEL currently provides ACHeq values that are typically about 1 h-¹ to 10 h-¹, thus either complementing, or potentially substituting for, conventional technologies. UV-C DIBEL protocols are forecast herein to evolve to >100 ACHeq in a few years, potentially surpassing conventional technologies. UV-A (315 nm to 400 nm) and/or UV-C (100 nm to 280 nm) DIBEL is also efficacious at inactivating pathogens on surfaces. The relatively simple installation, low acquisition and operating costs, and unobtrusive aesthetic of DIBEL using UV LEDs contribute value in a layered, multi-agent disinfection strategy.

Fate of COVID-19 Occurrences in Wastewater Systems: Emerging Detection and Treatment Technologies—A Review

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is currently posing a significant threat to the world’s public health and social-economic growth. Despite the rigorous international lockdown and quarantine efforts, the rate of COVID-19 infectious cases remains exceptionally high. Notwithstanding, the end route of COVID-19, together with emerging contaminants’ (antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, nanoplastics, pesticide, etc.) occurrence in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), poses a great challenge in wastewater settings. Therefore, this paper seeks to review an inter-disciplinary and technological approach as a roadmap for the water and wastewater settings to help fight COVID-19 and future waves of pandemics. This study explored wastewater–based epidemiology (WBE) potential for detecting SARS-CoV-2 and its metabolites in wastewater settings. Furthermore, the prospects of integrating innovative and robust technologies such as magnetic nanotechnology, advanced oxidation process, biosensors, and membrane bioreactors into the WWTPs to augment the risk of COVID-19’s environmental impacts and improve water quality are discussed. In terms of the diagnostics of COVID-19, potential biosensors such as sample–answer chip-, paper- and nanomaterials-based biosensors are highlighted. In conclusion, sewage treatment systems, together with magnetic biosensor diagnostics and WBE, could be a possible way to keep a surveillance on the outbreak of COVID-19 in communities around the globe, thereby identifying hotspots and curbing the diagnostic costs of testing. Photocatalysis prospects are high to inactivate coronavirus, and therefore a focus on safe nanotechnology and bioengineering should be encouraged.
