Abstract
PURPOSE Self-reported listening-related fatigue in adolescents with hearing loss (HL) was investigated. Specifically, the extent to which listening-related fatigue is associated with school accommodations, audiologic characteristics, and listening breaks was examined. METHOD Participants were 144 adolescents with HL ages 12-19 years. Data were collected online via Qualtrics. The Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale-Child was used to measure listening-related fatigue. Participants also reported on their use of listening breaks and school accommodations, including an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan, remote microphone systems, closed captioning, preferential seating, sign language interpreters, live transcriptions, and notetakers. RESULTS After controlling for age, HL laterality, and self-perceived listening difficulty, adolescents with an IEP or a 504 plan reported lower listening-related fatigue compared to adolescents without an IEP or a 504 plan. Adolescents who more frequently used remote microphone systems or notetakers reported higher listening-related fatigue compared to adolescents who used these accommodations less frequently, whereas increased use of a sign language interpreter was associated with decreased listening-related fatigue. Among adolescents with unilateral HL, higher age was associated with lower listening-related fatigue; no effect of age was found among adolescents with bilateral HL. Listening-related fatigue did not differ based on hearing device configuration. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with HL should be considered at risk for listening-related fatigue regardless of the type of hearing devices used or the degree of HL. The individualized support provided by an IEP or 504 plan may help alleviate listening-related fatigue, especially by empowering adolescents with HL to be self-advocates in terms of their listening needs and accommodations in school. Additional research is needed to better understand the role of specific school accommodations and listening breaks in addressing listening-related fatigue.

Abstract
The present study aimed to define use of head and eye movements during sound localization in children and adults to: (1) assess effects of stationary versus moving sound and (2) define effects of binaural cues degraded through acute monaural ear plugging. Thirty-three youth (MAge = 12.9 years) and seventeen adults (MAge = 24.6 years) with typical hearing were recruited and asked to localize white noise anywhere within a horizontal arc from -60° (left) to +60° (right) azimuth in two conditions (typical binaural and right ear plugged). In each trial, sound was presented at an initial stationary position (L1) and then while moving at ∼4°/s until reaching a second position (L2). Sound moved in five conditions (±40°, ±20°, or 0°). Participants adjusted a laser pointer to indicate L1 and L2 positions. Unrestricted head and eye movements were collected with gyroscopic sensors on the head and eye-tracking glasses, respectively. Results confirmed that accurate sound localization of both stationary and moving sound is disrupted by acute monaural ear plugging. Eye movements preceded head movements for sound localization in normal binaural listening and head movements were larger than eye movements during monaural plugging. Head movements favored the unplugged left ear when stationary sounds were presented in the right hemifield and during sound motion in both hemifields regardless of the movement direction. Disrupted binaural cues have greater effects on localization of moving than stationary sound. Head movements reveal preferential use of the better-hearing ear and relatively stable eye positions likely reflect normal vestibular-ocular reflexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social determinants of health (SDOH) (healthcare access and quality, education access and quality, socioeconomic status, social and cultural context, neighborhood and built environment) ( Healthy People 2030 ) have been shown to impact a wide range of health-related outcomes and access to care. Given the medical and nonmedical costs associated with children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL), the varied insurance coverage for hearing healthcare services, and the differences in hearing aid utilization rates between children of different sociodemographic classes, the sociodemographic information of children with UHL enrolled in research studies should be collected to ensure the generalizability of hearing healthcare interventions. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review is to assess the reporting of SDOH data for participants in studies of pediatric UHL and its comparison to population trends. DESIGN Two searches of published literature were conducted by a qualified medical librarian. Two reviewers then evaluated all candidate articles. Study inclusion parameters were from 2010 to present, peer-reviewed studies with prospective study design, and participant population including children (age 0 to 18 years old) with UHL. RESULTS Two literature searches using PubMed Medline and Embase found 442 and 3058 studies each for review. After abstract and paper review, 87 studies were included in final qualitative review, with 22 of these studies reporting race distribution of participants, 15 reporting insurance status or family income, and 12 reporting the maternal education level. CONCLUSIONS Sociodemographic data are not commonly reported in research studies of children with UHL. In reported samples, research participants are more likely to have private insurance and higher family income compared with overall population distribution. These demographic biases may affect the generalizability of study results to all children with UHL. Further evaluation is warranted to evaluate whether participant recruitment affects outcomes that reflect the overall population.

Abstract
Study objectives were to: (1) quantify stability in children and young adults using cochlear implants with concurrent cochleovestibular dysfunction (CI-V) during balance perturbations and (2) to assess effects of an auditory head-referencing device (BalanCI) on their stability. The BalanCI provides auditory feedback via cochlear implants to cue posture and potentially avoid falling in children with CI-V. It was hypothesized that children and young adults with CI-V respond with larger movements to floor perturbations than typically-developing peers (controls) and that BalanCI use decreases these movements. Motion in response to treadmill perturbations was captured by markers on the head, torso, and feet in eight CI-V and 15 control participants. Stability (area under the curve of motion displacement) and peak displacement latencies were measured. The CI-V group demonstrated less stability and slower responses than the control group during medium and large backwards perturbations (p's < 0.01). In the CI-V group, BalanCI use improved stability during large backwards perturbations (p < 0.001), but worsened stability during large sideways perturbations (p's < 0.001). Children and young adults with CI-V move more to remain upright during perturbations than typically-developing peers. The BalanCI has potential to aid physical/vestibular therapy in children with CIs who have poor balance.

Abstract
The goals of the current study were to evaluate audibility and cortical speech processing, and to provide insight into binaural processing in children with single-sided deafness (CHwSSD) using a cochlear implant (CI). The P1 potential to acoustically-presented speech stimuli (/m/, /g/, /t/) was recorded during monaural [Normal hearing (NH), CI], and bilateral (BIL, NH + CI) listening conditions within a clinical setting in 22 CHwSSD (mean age at CI/testing 4.7, 5.7 years). Robust P1 potentials were elicited in all children in the NH and BIL conditions. In the CI condition: (1) P1 prevalence was reduced yet was elicited in all but one child to at least one stimulus; (2) P1 latency was prolonged and amplitude was reduced, consequently leading to absence of binaural processing manifestations; (3) Correlation between P1 latency and age at CI/testing was weak and not significant; (4) P1 prevalence for /m/ was reduced and associated with CI manufacturer and duration of CI use. Results indicate that recording CAEPs to speech stimuli in clinical settings is feasible and valuable for the management of CHwSSD. While CAEPs provided evidence for effective audibility, a substantial mismatch in timing and synchrony of early-stage cortical processing between the CI and NH ear remains a barrier for the development of binaural interaction components.

Abstract
PURPOSE Unilateral cochlear implants (CIs) can restore binaural hearing in single-sided deafness (SSD). Direct stimulation of the CI can be obtained via the Bluetooth connection of a device to the CI, thus excluding the typical-hearing ear. This study aims to investigate the use of CI connectivity features as a rehabilitative strategy in a small cohort of children affected by SSD. METHOD A newly developed training protocol was presented to children with SSD who have less than 2 years of experience with CI. We developed a user-friendly and short-term (six sessions within 20 days) training protocol for speech perception that patients themselves can manage independently at home using CI connectivity systems. Children were telematically tested before and after the training by trained speech and language therapists. RESULTS Four patients met the inclusion criteria. They all showed better results in the final online assessment, when compared with the initial one. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first clinical focus article presenting an auditory training protocol for SSD patients with CI using the Bluetooth connectivity systems for teletherapy. The results, although preliminary, support the efficacy of this rehabilitative strategy. Further research is needed to support our findings.

Abstract
Objectives School-aged children may experience hearing loss and emotional problems. Previous studies have shown a bidirectional relationship between hearing loss and emotional problems in the elderly population, and we aimed to analyze the association between hearing thresholds and emotional problems in school-aged children. Methods Based on the Beijing Child Growth and Health Cohort (PROC) study, the hearing screenings were conducted in November 2019 using pure tone audiometry. A total of 1,877 parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess children's emotional and behavioral status. We used generalized linear regression analysis to assess the potential association of emotional problems with hearing thresholds, based on multiple imputed datasets with a sample size of 1,914. Results The overall pass rate of hearing screening was 91.5%. The abnormal rate of SDQ total difficulties was 55.8%. Emotional symptoms were positively associated with left ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.24, 95%CI: 0.08–0.40), and right ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.18, 95%CI: 0.04–0.32). Conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, peer problems, and prosocial behaviors had no association with the pass rate of the hearing screening. Regarding emotional symptoms, boys with many fears and who are easily scared coincided with increased right ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.01–1.33). Girls having many worries, frequently feeling unhappy and downhearted were positively associated with left and right ear average hearing thresholds, respectively (β = 0.96, 95%CI: 0.20–1.73; β = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.07–1.37). Conclusions The co-occurrence of hearing problems and emotional problems of children aged 6–8 in Beijing attracts attention. It is important to address undiscovered hearing loss and emotional problems from the perspective of comorbidity driving factors.

Abstract
PURPOSE We explored the intervention characteristics and language outcomes of children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) in Taiwan after the implementation of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) to highlight changes in attitudes and actions toward hearing-related treatments. METHOD Data of 132 children with UHL in birth cohorts from 2012 to 2019 were included. This retrospective study examined differences in age at identification, hearing aid (HA) fitting, and seeking supportive services. Commonly requested attributes of services, reasons for HA rejection, and children's language performance were investigated. RESULTS The age at identification decreased from 50.3 months in 2012 to 2.6 months in 2019. Similar trends of declining age were obtained for the age at HA fitting and age at first service contact. In addition, 40% of the parents did not seek support until the child became older (M = 30.5 months) and showed more noticeable behaviors related to hearing loss, and only 64% of the children were consistent HA users. Children with UHL enrolled in the intervention programs approximated the average language performance of the assessment norm; however, they showed depressed language levels when compared to the norm group at the 75th percentile. CONCLUSIONS UNHS had a positive impact on early identification and intervention in children with UHL. Compared to parents of children with all types of hearing loss, parents of children with UHL seemed to be more uncertain about aural habilitation at the early stage.

Abstract
PURPOSE This current study aimed to explore early prelingual auditory development (EPLAD) and early language development in Mandarin-speaking children who received simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants (BICI) during the first year of cochlear implantation and compare the performance of the children who received BICI with those received unilateral cochlear implant (UCI). METHODS 39 Mandarin-speaking children who received BICIs simultaneously and 36 children with UCIs were enrolled in this study. To access the EPLAD, the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT/MAIS) was conducted, and a subtest of the simplified short-form version of the Mandarin Communicative Development Inventory (SSF-MCDI) was used to evaluate the development of expressive and receptive vocabulary for the children at indicated time points after surgery. RESULTS In both the simultaneous BICI and UCI groups, we observed significantly increased scores of the SSF-MCDI and IT/MAIS 1 year after the surgery. There are indications of early advantages in children with BICI in IT/MAIS scores (at 1, 3, and 6 months after activation). For early development of language, a great difference between the expressive vocabulary scores and the receptive vocabulary scores was observed in both groups. We found there were not significant differences between the two groups on expressive or receptive vocabulary scores, the use of more differentiated measures might be required in future research. We further found that the development of the receptive or expressive vocabulary is dramatically correlated with the age at implantation and the total scores of IT/MAIS for children with simultaneous BICIs. CONCLUSION These results may supplement the skills development of early language and auditory in Mandarin-native children with simultaneous CIs. It is obvious that children with normal hearing have mastery of receptive vocabulary before that of expressive vocabulary, which is the same as children with unilateral and bilateral CIs in this research. IT/MAIS total scores and age at CI were important factors for early language performance in children with simultaneous BICIs.
