Evaluating Knowledge, Awareness, and Practices among Pakistani Population regarding COVID-19: An Online Survey-Based Study

Aim The study aims to analyze the knowledge, awareness, and practices among the Pakistani population.

Study Method This is an online survey-based study conducted in July 2020 among the general public of Pakistan. Pretested and structured self-administered questionnaire, designed on Google Forms Inc., was used to collect data. The questionnaire included sociodemographic and measurable coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) knowledge data. Assessments on participants' attitudes and practices toward COVID-19 included questions on transmission, symptoms knowledge, and preventive measures.

Results Among the survey completers (n = 962) 61% (n = 590) were male and 39% (n = 372) were female. The majority of participants is aged 18 to 25 and belonged to Punjab. The participants had moderate knowledge regarding disease origin, clinical features, symptoms, and prevention. A vast majority of participants had good knowledge of symptoms and prevention measurements. A good number of participants were also practicing precautionary measures. The majority of participants utilize media and government authorities as authoritative sources of information. The population was also satisfied with the information given by the government.

Conclusion Participants have moderate knowledge regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, reflected by a positive attitude and safe practices. There are gaps in knowledge of the virus, its origin, and transmission. Rumors affect the psychology of people, which may lead to the worst situation of panic conditions.

The impacts of innovation capability and social adaptability on undergraduates’ employability: The role of self-efficacy

Introduction: As the world is consistently driven by the infusion of new-generation information technology and the knowledge economy, college students are placed under mounting pressure in developing occupation-related competencies. Their employability has been receiving growing concerns from stakeholders such as higher education institutions, governments, employers, parents, and even student groups themselves as it plays a decisive role in occupational success, social stability, and economic prosperity. Under the theoretical guidance of social cognitive theory, this study set out to investigate the cognitive and psychological mechanisms through which innovation capability, social adaptability, and self-efficacy influence the employability of college students. It also attempts to analyze the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relations between innovation capability, social adaptability, and employability which has been rarely studied in academia.

Methods: A quantitative approach was employed in this study. Data was collected from 726 undergraduates from 9 higher education institutions in the mainland of China by questionnaire survey method. The research model showed a good fit (χ2/df=4.46, RMSEA=0.069, SRMR=0.049, GFI=0.934, CFI=0.965, NFI=0.955, TLI=0.955). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to this study for data analysis.

Results: The findings showed that innovation capability, social adaptability, and self-efficacy significantly and positively correlates with undergraduates’ employability. University students with stronger innovation capability, social adaptability, and self-efficacy tend to be more employable in the job market. Model 4 of SPSS PROCESS Macro revealed that self-efficacy played a mediating role in the correlation between innovation capability, social adaptability, and employability.

Discussion: Undergraduates with higher levels of innovation capability and social adaptability are more confident in their abilities to take specific actions and achieve expected goals, which in turn intensifies their employability. The study suggests the possibility of improving undergraduates’ employability through positive interference of innovation capability, social adaptability, and self-efficacy in the era of information technology and knowledge-based economy.

Identification of At-risk Pregnant Population for Over-the-Counter Drug Usage in Low-Resource Settings

OBJECTIVE

Nearly 1.5 billion people of an Asian country are living their lives without a country-specific over-the-counter (OTC) drug list. A study was planned to assess the understanding and practice of OTC medication consumption in the pregnant population.

METHODS

A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study evaluating different perspectives on OTC drug consumption was planned in around 500 pregnant women attending tertiary care outpatient antenatal clinics. The association of knowledge, attitude and practice versus indications, knowledge regarding harmful effects possible, reasons for choosing OTC medication, the practice of consulting nonmedical persons and drug interactions with the disease or prescription medications was determined. Regression analysis was performed in statistical software R.

RESULTS

Seven percent (36/516) of pregnant women were found to consume oral antimicrobials without prescription. Local chemist consultation was the most common channel (72.48%) to procure the OTC medicines. Participants with good knowledge score showed an odds ratio (OR) of 1.87 (95% C.I.; 1.28-2.73), 1.6 (95% C.I.; 0.99-2.63), 1.66 (95% C.I.; 1.14-2.42) and 2.66 (95% C.I.; 1.49-4.89) for self-medication encouragement tendency possible, restricting sale of OTC medications, the habit of reading drug leaflets and understanding the potentially harmful effects, with OTC drugs, respectively. Right-attitude participants showed an OR of 1.89 (95% C.I.; 1.29-2.80) and 1.8 (95% C.I.; 1.19-2.76) for identifying knowledge of acetaminophen overdose and liver damage link as well as the disease symptom masking possibility with OTC, respectively. Participants with insufficient knowledge and attitude scores showed an association with more OTC antacid-antiemetics and analgesic use, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Antenatal pregnant women need to be guided on avoiding OTC antimicrobial usage. Both obstetricians and regulators have to play an active role in educating pregnant women and contributing to developing country-specific OTC drug lists with the guidelines.

Developing a latent class analysis model to identify at-risk populations among people using medicine without prescription

INTRODUCTION

There exist limited strategies to address the issue of topical medication without prescription (MWP) use.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A survey with pre-coded questionnaires was conducted with 210 patients following up in the dermatology clinic of a tertiary care center. The knowledge and attitude scores were regressed against demographics and exploratory practice questions, and latent class analysis was carried out to check any particular set of characteristics associated with study subpopulations.

RESULTS

Forty-seven (22%) participants were found using topical antimicrobial containing MWP. Participants with good knowledge score had 3.41 (95% C.I. = 1.68-7.33), 2.99 (1.37-6.73), and 2.49 (1.26-5.15) times association with opting of distance as the prime reason for availing topical MWP, habit of always reading the accompanying drug leaflet, and understanding that OTC topical medication may change the effect of the already prescribed drugs. Participants with good attitude score showed 2.76 (1.50-5.13) times association with limiting the use of steroid containing topical MWP. Latent class analysis identified one subset of participants having lesser knowledge and attitude scores and quoted financial reasons for the procurement of MWP; however, it was found to have greater income as compared to remaining participants.

CONCLUSION

The strategy to identify the target patient audience so as to deliver patient education intervention programs, regarding safe and effective use of MWP was built.
