Abstract
PURPOSE Clinical guidelines call for the inclusion of exercise interventions in every patient's dialysis session, but these recommendations are rarely adopted. Healthcare providers play a key role in this. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how healthcare providers perceive the benefits, risks and barriers of intradialytic exercise (IDE). METHODS We conducted 21 individual, semi-structured interviews with 11 nurses, 5 nephrologists, 3 training assistants and 2 managers from two dialysis centres in Slovakia. Verbatim transcripts of digitally recorded interviews were thematically analysed using MAXQDA®. RESULTS Participants reported the benefits of IDE as improvements in patients' physical and psychosocial functioning, independence and self-efficacy, clinical profile and quality of therapy. As risks of IDE, they most frequently reported exercise-related damage to vascular access, insufficient individualization of training and musculoskeletal injuries. The presence of psychological problems among patients was reported as a major barrier for initiating and maintaining patients' exercise. Other reported barriers included limitations in financial and personnel resources of haemodialysis care. CONCLUSIONS Safe and sustainable implementation of IDE, which might improve a patient's well-being, need to be prescribed in alignment with the patient's clinical profile, be delivered individually according to the patient's characteristics and requires adjustments in the available resources.

Abstract
Objective To investigate feasibility of the SUCCESS app; a cross-platform e-health innovation to improve health literacy, self-management and shared decision-making among culturally-diverse Australian haemodialysis patients. Methods Multi-site, pre-post, mixed-methods study. Haemodialysis patients ≥18 years used the app for 12 weeks. Qualitative data from 18 interviews were thematically analysed to evaluate app acceptability. Quantitative analysis using paired sampled t-tests evaluated feasibility outcomes pertaining to recruitment, retention, data collection and app efficacy (including health literacy; decision self-efficacy; quality of life; behaviour; knowledge; confidence). Results We successfully recruited diverse participants (N = 116; 45% born overseas; 40% low/moderate health literacy) from four Local Health Districts in Sydney, Australia. However, only 61 participants completed follow-up questionnaires. Qualitative analyses provided insights into acceptability and user engagement. Quantitative analyses showed significant improvements on the health literacy domain 'Ability to actively engage with healthcare providers' (Mean Difference [MD] = 0.2 on a 5-point scale; CI95%: 0.0-0.4; p = 0.03) and decision self-efficacy (MD = 4.3 on a 10-point scale; CI95%: 0.6-7.9; p = 0.02) after 12 weeks app use. Conclusions The SUCCESS app was feasible and acceptable to participants. The app will be adapted to facilitate ongoing use and engagement among diverse haemodialysis patients. Innovation This is the first health literacy-informed app to promote active participation in haemodialysis self-management and decision-making, tailored toward culturally-diverse and low health literacy groups.

Abstract
Introduction Indigenous people represent approximately 5% of the world’s population. However, they often have a disproportionately higher burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and chronic kidney disease (CKD) than their equivalent general population. Several non-pharmacological interventions (e.g., educational) have been used to reduce CVD and kidney disease risk factors in Indigenous groups. The aim of this paper is to describe the protocol for a scoping review that will assess the impact of non-pharmacological interventions carried out in Indigenous and remote dwelling populations to reduce CVD risk factors and CKD. Materials and methods This scoping review will be guided by the methodological framework for conducting scoping studies developed by Arksey and O’Malley. Both empirical (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, ISI Web of Science and PsycINFO) and grey literature references will be assessed if they focused on interventions targeted at reducing CVD or CKD among Indigenous groups. Two reviewers will independently screen references in consecutive stages of title/abstract screening and then full-text screening. Impact of interventions used will be assessed using the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance (RE-AIM) framework. A descriptive overview, tabular summaries, and content analysis will be carried out on the extracted data. Ethics and dissemination This review will collect and analyse evidence on the impact of interventions of research carried out to reduce CVD and CKD among Indigenous populations. Such evidence will be disseminated using traditional approaches that includes open-access peer-reviewed publication, scientific presentations, and a report. Also, we will disseminate our findings to the government and Indigenous leaders. Ethical approval will not be required for this scoping review as the data used will be extracted from already published studies with publicly accessible data.

Abstract
Patients living with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As these patients are considered extremely clinically vulnerable, they were advised to ‘shield’ at home, with limited face-to-face contact and support for the duration of the pandemic. Living with ESKD impacts heavily on patients’ mental health and wellbeing, and this extended period of isolation and loneliness is likely to have a further negative effect on patients’ mental wellbeing. The Renal Arts Group (RAG), Queen’s University Belfast, aims to improve the quality of life of those living with ESKD and the extended renal community through engagement with the arts. We developed an initiative, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, and carried out an evaluation. The initiative included a programme of online arts-based activities that built upon the work of RAG and provided mental wellbeing support for patients who faced an extended, lonely period of self-isolation. We worked with experienced arts practitioners to identify appropriate activities and developed five workshops and tutorials that were delivered online. We received positive feedback from participants who found the activities to be enjoyable, beneficial to their mental wellbeing and were interested in undertaking further activities online. We conducted interviews with the arts facilitators and identified three themes for consideration when developing online arts activities for the renal community. Participants reported that the activities benefited their mental wellbeing, were enjoyable and provided an opportunity to meet others with shared interests. The arts facilitators reported experiences around accessibility, audience engagement, impact on health and wellbeing and facilitator experience, that should be considered when developing online arts activities for the renal community. This evaluation will inform future work in this area, and the arts tutorial videos developed as part of this project will remain available online for members of the renal community to access.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Living with life-limiting illness significantly impacts quality of life. A growing body of evidence suggests that arts engagement facilitated by artists promotes well-being. However, no synthesis of the literature exists to describe arts engagement delivered by artists with individuals receiving palliative care. AIM To systematically review and synthesize evidence to identify outcomes and key knowledge gaps to inform future research and practice. DESIGN A systematic integrative literature review was conducted using a pre-defined search strategy and reported using PRISMA guidelines. Analysis was conducted iteratively and synthesis achieved using constant comparison to generate themes. DATA SOURCES PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for studies published between database inception and August 2020. Search terms included variations on arts/artists; patients/service users; and palliative or end-of-life care. Eligibility criteria was applied and study quality assessed. RESULTS Seven reviewed studies explored literary, performing, and visual arts engagement in hospitals, hospice and community settings in England, the United States, France, and Canada. Study designs, interventions and findings were discussed. Themes identified across studies associated arts engagement with (1) a sense of well-being, (2) a newly discovered, or re-framed, sense of self, (3) connection with others, and (4) challenges associated with practice. CONCLUSION Recommendations for future research were offered in order to maximize benefits, minimize risks and address complexity of artists' engagement in palliative care including: (1) consistency in methods and reporting; (2) inclusion of wider perspectives; and (3) key considerations for adapting the arts by health condition and art form.

Abstract
The global prevalence and burden of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is increasing, partially as a result of an aging population. Patients with ESKD who receive haemodialysis experience a difficult, protracted treatment regimen that can negatively impact mental health and wellbeing. One way of addressing this issue could be through the provision of arts-based interventions during haemodialysis treatment. A process evaluation was conducted as part of a larger feasibility study, to explore experiences and acceptability of an intra-dialytic (during haemodialysis) arts-based intervention. Thirteen patients and nine healthcare professionals were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Three themes related to the experience of art on dialysis included: the perception of art participation, as patients described initial anxiety around participating in art, which reduced after they experienced the intervention; the benefits of art participation on both patients and healthcare professionals; the benefits including improved self-esteem, motivation, increased social interaction and an overall improved haemodialysis experience; and the acceptability of the arts-based intervention, as the intervention was highly acceptable, even when delivered by a facilitator who was not a professional artist. This study highlights that arts-based interventions could be used to improve the mental health and wellbeing of patients with ESKD receiving haemodialysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing numbers of patients are receiving dialysis, particularly in high-income countries. Patients receiving haemodialysis often experience fatigue, anxiety, depression and boredom. It is suggested that arts activities could have a therapeutic effect. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore patients' perspectives of participating while on dialysis in chosen arts and creative living activities provided by tutors at the bedside. DESIGN Qualitative semi-structured interviews in the interpretive tradition were conducted, with thematic analysis. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Fifteen patients of different ages, genders and ethnicities who participated in an arts activity while receiving haemodialysis in an inner-city dialysis unit in England were included in this study. RESULTS Participants reported positive experiences of engaging in art activities. Their views on the value of the activities were grouped into five themes: diversion from receiving haemodialysis, a sense of achievement, contribution to a more positive self-identity, increased confidence and motivation and a therapeutic talking relationship. Participants suggested that patient peer promotion of the activities could increase uptake, with patient choice of activity seen as important. CONCLUSIONS Participation in a chosen arts activity while receiving haemodialysis was perceived by patients to have positive psychosocial effects. We theorize three potential explanatory mechanisms for these effects: That the experience of participating in the activities engendered positive psychological states of 'being in the flow'; enhanced self-esteem to add to personal coping mechanisms; and offered additional facets to the patient's identity that countered the stigmatizing effect of receiving dialysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with end-stage kidney disease who receive haemodialysis experience a protracted treatment regimen that can result in an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Arts-based interventions could address this unique issue; however, no arts-based interventions have been developed for delivery within a haemodialysis unit and evaluation within a randomised controlled trials (RCTs). AIM To develop a complex arts-based intervention for patients with end-stage kidney disease whilst receiving haemodialysis. METHODS The development process utilised the Arts in Health framework (Fancourt, 2017). The framework was addressed through the establishment of an interdisciplinary advisory group, collaboration and consultation with stakeholders, a scoping and realist review, shadowing of artists-in-residence, personal arts practice and logic modelling. RESULTS The intervention involved six 1-h long, one-to-one facilitated sessions focused on creative writing and visual art. Patients could choose between art form and self-select a subject matter. The sessions had a primary focus on skill development and were delivered using principles derived from the psychological theory of flow. CONCLUSION The Arts in Health framework provided an appropriate and pragmatic approach to intervention development. Complex arts-based interventions can be developed for the purpose of evaluation within a trial framework. This intervention was designed to strike a balance between standardised components, and a person-centred approach necessary to address existential boredom.
