Knowledge of obstetric danger signs and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care services at Thai community hospital

BACKGROUND

To decrease preventable maternal mortality, providing health education to all parties is mandatory. Good knowledge, including awareness of pregnant women regarding obstetric danger signs (ODS), leads to appropriate practices and services. The knowledge of ODS varies among countries and regions. Since the data in rural regions of Thailand remains unavailable, this study aimed to identify the prevalence of good ODS knowledge and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal services at a Thai community hospital.

METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional, analytical study in 415 singleton pregnant women who visited the antenatal clinic at Wang Saphung Hospital, Loei, Thailand. A well-trained research assistant interviewed all participants using the data record form containing twenty items on the demographic and obstetric data and sixteen items on ODS knowledge. An ODS score of at least 75% (12 points) was considered a good level of knowledge.

RESULTS

A total of 275 participants (66.27%) had good knowledge of ODS. The most recognized ODS was vaginal bleeding whereas the least recognized ODS during pregnancy was convulsion; the least recognized ODS during labor and delivery was retained placenta. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the predictive factors of good OBS knowledge included a higher education level, maternal age of at least 20 years, and having medical personnel as a source of knowledge.

CONCLUSIONS

In a rural setting of Thailand, two-thirds of pregnant women had good ODS knowledge. Identifying those at risk for fair and poor ODS knowledge and prompt management for the vulnerable subgroups might help decrease maternal mortality.

The Awareness and Knowledge of Normal and Abnormal Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy Among Women of Childbearing Age in Saudi Arabia

BACKGROUND

Pregnancy is a natural physiological process that leads to the outstanding outcome of giving birth. It involves normal and abnormal signs and symptoms that women need to be aware of during this period.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to assess the awareness and knowledge about normal and abnormal signs and symptoms of pregnancy among women of childbearing age in Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

This is an online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study done in 2023 among women in Saudi Arabia, aged 18 to 45. The estimated sample size was 385 after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. However, 981 responses were collected and included.

RESULTS

A total of 981 participants were included in our study. The study findings noted that the majority of women demonstrated a good level of knowledge about the normal signs and symptoms of pregnancy. About 82% of the women reported that they knew mood swings were normal symptoms during pregnancy, 80.1% were aware of nausea, 75.9% knew about fatigue, and 68.9% knew about fainting or dizziness. The findings noted that less than half of the participants were fully aware of the abnormal obstetric signs. For the abnormal signs and symptoms during the first trimester, only 45.2% were fully aware of the symptoms. In the second trimester, 39.0% were fully aware of the symptoms. Only 30.5% of the participants were fully aware of the abnormal signs and symptoms in the third trimester. The study established a statistically significant relationship between age and knowledge of abnormal symptoms during the first, second, and third trimesters (P=0.027, 0.041, and 0.006) (r=0.139, 0.105, and 0.146). Furthermore, a statistically significant relationship was found between the level of education of the participants and the level of awareness of abnormal symptoms during the first trimester (P=0.043). However, there was no significant relationship between education level and the level of knowledge regarding abnormal symptoms during the second and third trimesters (r=0.22, 0.061, P=0.578, 0.603).

CONCLUSION

The study found that the majority of women had a good level of awareness and knowledge about normal signs and symptoms of pregnancy, while less than half of the women were fully aware of the abnormal signs and symptoms at different stages of pregnancy. The older respondents and people with higher levels of education demonstrated more knowledge. The two variables, age and education level, had a statistically significant relationship with knowledge of abnormal signs and symptoms of pregnancy with education level being only significant during the first trimester period. Our study concluded that women had different symptoms during pregnancy, both normal and abnormal. Their knowledge about these signs and symptoms was considerably moderate, but further awareness about the normality of these signs is needed. The study recommends more research to measure women's awareness about normal and abnormal symptoms of pregnancy, and more awareness programs should be carried out in the region as a way of enhancing a better understanding of normal and abnormal pregnancy symptoms. This will go a long way in helping women through their pregnancy and make them more comfortable.

Awareness of Obstetric and Delivery Complications Among Saudi Pregnant Women in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

INTRODUCTION

The birth of a newborn is often celebrated with delight and excitement around the world. However, maternal mortality remains a great concern, and the majority of these deaths could have been prevented. This study aims to assess the awareness of obstetric and delivery complications among pregnant women in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

METHODOLOGY

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in Riyadh. The participants were interviewed using a pre-tested questionnaire that included sociodemographic and obstetric data, as well as 16 questions to measure awareness of danger signs during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, and knowledge of Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness (BPCR).

RESULTS

Among the 385 pregnant women, only 45.5% were aware of associated complications during pregnancy, 18.4% during labor, and 30.6% during the postpartum period. Although 82% of the women had heard about BPCR previously, only 53% took action toward it. Certain factors, such as age, level of education, having a medical condition, and the number of antenatal care clinic visits, were associated with an increased level of awareness.

CONCLUSION

The study highlights a lack of awareness regarding obstetric and delivery complications among Saudi pregnant women. Therefore, dedicated education by a healthcare provider during prenatal visits is recommended to increase knowledge and avoid future obstetric complications.

Knowledge of danger signs in pregnancy and their associated factors among pregnant women in Hosanna Town, Hadiya Zone, southern Ethiopia

Background

Danger signs in pregnancy can warn of maternal health problems. In developing African countries, including Ethiopia, the rate of maternal mortality is high. There is little knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy and their associated factors at the community level in the study area.

Methods

A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted to assess knowledge about danger signs among pregnant women in Hosanna Zuria Kebeles between 30 June and 30 July 2021. A simple random sampling method was used to select eligible pregnant women. The sample size was proportionally allocated based on the number of pregnant women in each kebele. Data were collected in face-to-face interviews using a pretested questionnaire. The descriptive results were presented as proportions, whereas the analytic results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (AOR).

Results

The prevalence of good knowledge of danger signs in pregnancy was 259/410 (63.2%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 58.3–67.8). The most common known danger signs during pregnancy were severe vaginal bleeding (n = 227, 55.4%), followed by blurred vision (n = 224, 54.6%). In the multivariable analysis, the age of the respondent (AOR = 3.29, 95% CI 1.15–9.38), the tertiary education of the mother (AOR = 5.40, 95% CI 2.56–11.34), and the number of live births (AOR = 3.95, 95% CI 2.08–7.48) were statistically significant factors.

Conclusion

There was an adequate prevalence of knowledge of danger signs in pregnancy among pregnant mothers compared with different studies in Ethiopia and different countries. Advanced maternal age, the respondent's level of education, and the number of live births were found to be independent determining factors for the level of knowledge on danger signs in pregnancy among pregnant mothers. Health facilities and healthcare providers should focus on antenatal care and the age and parity of the mother when giving information about danger signs in pregnancy. The Ministry of Health should provide reproductive health services in rural areas and encourage education for women. Further studies need to be conducted and include danger signs in the three trimesters using a qualitative study design.

Factors influencing birth preparedness and complication readiness among childbearing age women in Thatta district, Sindh

Introduction

Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) is a broad system to increase the practice of trained health provision at the time of childbirth and the key interventions to decrease mothers’ and newborns’ death. However, its status and influencing factors have not been well studied at different levels in the study area. The current study aimed to assess the BPCR status and explore its associated factors influencing BPCR among childbearing age women in Thatta, District of Sindh.

Methods

This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 770 recently delivered mothers from October 2016 –September 2017, recruited using a multistage cluster sampling technique. A structured validated close-ended questionnaire measuring BPCR knowledge and practices was used for the interviews. The results were analyzed by means of the Chi-square test, and a binary logistic regression model was used to determine the factors influencing BPCR.

Results

The overall response rate was 94.6%, with a low BPCR status. Out of 770 participants, only 163 (21.2%) were well prepared, while 607 (78.8%) were not prepared for safe childbirth and its complications. A small proportion of women knew about the serious warning signs of pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the postpartum period (16.2%), (15.3%) and (22.7%) respectively. Antenatal care (ANC) checkup (P < 0.001), cost of ANC checkup (p = 0.016), place of birth (p = 0.014), awareness of serious warning signs during pregnancy (p = 0.001) and awareness of serious warning signs during the postpartum period (p < 0.001) were found to be significant predictors of BPCR.

Conclusion

The proportion of women who were well prepared for birth and its complications was low. It is recommended to organize community-based education campaigns and improve the quality of MNCH services at every level to increase BPCR among women in Sindh.
