The palm or the plate? An assessment of dietary guideline promotion, awareness, and preferences among Saudis: cross-sectional survey

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward colorectal cancer lifestyle risk factors among adults in Saudi Arabia

Background

Despite an apparent increase in early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) in Saudi Arabia, with the majority of patients being diagnosed at an advanced disease stage, no previous assessment of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward its dietary and lifestyle-related risk factors has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the KAP levels with respect to these risk factors for CRC and examine possible associations between the studied variables among the Saudi population.

Methods

This cross-sectional study involved 1,040 participants aged 18 years or older. Data were collected by convenience sampling via a self-administered online questionnaire in Saudi Arabia between June and December 2023.

Results

A majority of participants (77.8%) displayed low knowledge about the dietary and lifestyle-related risk factors for CRC, while only 22.2% possessed high knowledge. Similarly, 78.6% of participants exhibited negative attitudes toward these risk factors, with just 21.4% having positive attitudes. Furthermore, 75.0% of participants reported engaging in poor practices, leaving only 25.0% demonstrating good practices related to CRC risk factors.

Conclusions

The findings of this study indicate insufficient KAP levels toward dietary and lifestyle-related risk factors for CRC in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the urgent need for nationwide initiatives and programs to promote improved knowledge, attitudes, and practices and reduce the effect of the risk factors contributing to CRC.

Exploring university students' nutrition literacy in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional survey

Introduction

Improving individuals' nutrition literacy can be one way to promote healthy dietary behaviors, which lowers the incidence of non-communicable diseases. In Saudi Arabia, there is a limited information regarding nutrition literacy among students. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to investigate university students' nutrition literacy and identify its predictors in Saudi Arabia. Another objective was to assess how nutrition literacy is associated with eating habits among this sample.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was carried out among students attending the University of Jeddah and King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah City) in Saudi Arabia from June 2023 to September 2023. Using a convenience sampling approach, 570 students were enrolled in this study. An online-based structured survey tool including demographic details, a food frequency questionnaire, and a nutrition literacy scale was used to collect the data. Descriptive and multiple binary logistic regression analysis were performed.

Results

Approximately 40.4% of the participants exhibited poor nutrition literacy. Female students were less likely than male students to have poor nutrition literacy (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 0.62; 95% confidence interval, CI = 0.42, 0.92). Underweight (AOR = 1.73; 95%CI = 1.22, 4.56) and overweight participants (AOR = 3.1; 95%CI = 2.77, 7.23) were at higher risk of having poor level of nutrition literacy as compared to those who had normal weight. Students who did not take any nutrition-related courses had a 1.3 times higher probability of having a poor level of nutrition literacy compared to their counterparts (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI = 1.05, 3.74). Moreover, poor nutrition literacy was associated with higher weekly consumption frequencies of red meat, processed foods, funk foods and sugar-sweetened beverages.

Conclusion

A higher percentage of university students had poor nutrition literacy, which was associated with gender, self-reported BMI status, nutrition-related courses and unhealthy eating habits. These findings can assist university administrators and policymakers in implementing effective measures to enhance students' nutrition literacy rates in Saudi Arabia.

Is Adherence to the Saudi Healthy Plate Dietary Guidelines Associated with Eating Concerns Symptoms among Saudi Young Females?

BACKGROUND

Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) offer broad recommendations based on scientific evidence, focusing on food groups rather than nutrients that should be included in the diet. Emerging adulthood (18-30 years) is a critical period for poor dietary quality and mental health. Eating habits (EHs) are formed early in life and are influenced by various factors, such as emotional state, which can lead to either binge or restricted eating, ultimately increasing the risk of eating disorders (EDs). This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the extent of adherence to the Saudi Healthy Plate Dietary Guidelines (SHPDGs) and its potential association with Eating Concerns (ECs) among Saudi females (aged 18-30 years) from all provinces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

A validated online questionnaire was used to assess eating behaviors (EBs) using the Starting The Conversation (STC) instrument and EC symptoms using the Eating Disorders Screen for Primary Care (ESP) screening tool.

RESULTS

The total sample size was 1092 participants with a mean age of 23.02 ± 3.47. Only 0.7% of the participants adhered to the SHPDGs and were free of EC symptoms. Conversely, 50.4% of participants who exhibited EC symptoms had poor adherence to the SHPDGs. Across Saudi Arabian provinces, high adherence to the SHPDGs was more prominent in both the Eastern and Western provinces (37.5%) than in the Central and Southern provinces (0%). The most striking result was that the Central province exhibited a high percentage of poor adherence to the SHPDGs (25.6%). Moreover, high adherence to SHPDGs was not associated with the probability of ECs.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study revealed a trend of poor adherence to SHPDGs among Saudi females, with a large proportion also experiencing EC symptoms. Accordingly, the authors recommend increasing awareness within the Saudi community about SHPDGs using educational campaigns on social media platforms to enhance the importance of adopting a healthy diet, especially among females, and demonstrate that the impact on their health and well-being is that they are experiencing multiple phases that involve pregnancy and giving birth involves specific nutritional requirements.

Self-Perceived Nutritional Competency of Primary Healthcare Physicians in Qassim, Saudi Arabia

INTRODUCTION

Overnutrition plays a vital role in the development of a spectrum of non-communicable diseases. Diet-related disorders have a huge impact on personal health as well as the country's economy for the management of such disorders. The study aims to assess the primary healthcare physicians' nutrition competency, which will be beneficial for evaluating the current situation and future strategies, training, nutrition care, and disease prevention.

METHODOLOGY

Among 147 primary healthcare physicians by simple random sampling from four cities and two rural areas of Qassim, Saudi Arabia, from December 2022 to December 2023 using a validated (NUTCOMP) tool. Data were entered, cleaned, and analyzed with SPSS software version 21.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Informed consent was obtained from all study participants. Chi-square and ANOVA tests were applied to draw the significant differences.

RESULTS

A total of 147 participants enrolled in this study, and the mean age and standard deviation (SD) of the study population were 34.38 ± 6.57. More than half of the physicians (n = 76, 51.7%) continued education on nutrition. Significant mean differences were observed between some and focused nutrition content received physicians versus no nutrition content received physicians concerning nutrition skill, communication, and nutrition attitude consecutively (P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, and P < 0.0001). The mean nutrition knowledge, skill, communication, attitude score, and SD of PHCC physicians were 26.91 ± 5.42 (maximum 35), 31.19 ± 6.18 (maximum 40), 36.73 ± 7.48 (maximum 45), and 34.74 ± 6.23 (maximum 40), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study results show primary healthcare physicians perceive themselves to have good nutritional competency.

Does Awareness of Malaysian Healthy Plate Associate with Adequate Fruit and Vegetable Intake among Malaysian Adults with Non-Communicable Diseases?

The healthy eating plate concept has been introduced in many countries, including Malaysia, as a visual guide for the public to eat healthily. The relationship between Malaysian Healthy Plate (MHP) and adequate fruit and vegetable (FV) intake among morbid Malaysian adults is unknown. Hence, we investigated the relationship between awareness of the MHP and FV intake among morbid Malaysian adults. National survey data on 9760 morbid Malaysian adults aged 18 years and above were analyzed. The relationship between awareness of MHP and FV intake among Malaysian adults with obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia were determined using multivariable logistic regression controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle risk factors. Our data demonstrated that MHP awareness is associated with adequate FV intake among the Malaysian adults with abdominal obesity (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.86, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05-3.29), diabetes mellitus (aOR: 4.88, 95% CI: 2.13-22.18), hypertension (aOR: 4.39, 95% CI: 1.96-9.83), and hypercholesterolemia (aOR: 4.16, 95% CI: 1.48-11.72). Our findings indicated the necessity for ongoing efforts by policymakers, healthcare professionals, and nutrition educators to promote the concept of MHP and ensure that morbid Malaysian adults consume a sufficient intake of FV or adopt a healthy eating pattern to achieve and maintain optimal health.
